Ubuntu :: Long Wait At "Starting Up..." + Windows Load?

May 3, 2010

Installed 10.04 last night and started to have some troubles with the computer. On the Ubuntu side my start-up speed has increased by quite a bit.I get a long pause after I select 10.04 from my grub screen "Starting up..." takes a while.meone mentioned something about having Grub 2 vs Grub 1?It does say Grub Loading Stage 1.5 as it starts up...

Someone else mentioned something about driversSystem -> Admin -> Hardware DriversThree drivers appear.1) NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 173)2.) Broadcast STA wireless driver3) NVIDA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended]The third one is activated, so that feels right. And then, on the Windows side of things.Right after I installed 10.04 and then tried to select my window's partition it would not load. It just got stuck in a never ending loop of "Starting Windows...". Had to force shut down and then Windows made me go through this long process of trying to revive it to an older point

Ubuntu :: Connection - Load A Website Taking To Long To Respond And Sometimes Doesn't Load

Oct 2, 2010

When i open one of the web browsers i use and try to load a web site it's taking to long to respond and sometimes it doesnt load the website at all. I have tried with firefox, epiphany, opera with all the same results. I am sure that this is not a problem with my internet connection because i don't have these problems with windows. Also the network manager connection settings are correct

I also tried choosing the old kernel(2.6.32.24) to boot from but no success. The problem is the same as if i am using the 2.6.32.25 kernel. The strange thing is that i can download packages from synaptic with full speed. Last think.I have recently downloaded the recommended updates from the update manager but i don't remember what are the things that where updated.

CentOS 5 :: X/Gnome Takes Long Time To Load And Sudo Takes Long Time To Execute

Oct 13, 2009

I am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.

I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.

A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.

I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.

Ubuntu :: Karmic Does Take Relatively Long Time To Load On 'slow' PC

Jan 29, 2010

I have been using Karmic as a tool to extract important data from Windows Operating Systems where say viruses have necessitated a complete reinstall. I run the Karmic install disk and use the 'try before installing'option. It works well and I am able to 'rescue' anything I want by saving to a USB drive.Problem is that Karmic does take a relatively long time to load on a 'slow' PC.Does anyone have any suggestions on a 'slimmed down' Ubuntu that could be used in the same way which will load up quickly ?In most circumstances all I want to do is mount the C Drive of the stuffed PC and copy files to an external USB drive.

OpenSUSE Network :: IPv6 Getting A Global Address Takes A Long Time - Possibly Only After Starting A KDE Session

Jul 8, 2011

My ISP offers the service of native IPv6. So my ADSL router provides me with a local and global IPv6 address. However after a reboot it takes minutes to finally see the global address when using "ifconfog eth0". During that time I can't do a ping6 to an external server, which seems logical. So I waited several minutes, but no global address. After that I started a KDE session, went back to the console(<Ctrl>+<Alt>+F1) and now the global address was there. Is this normal behavior or should I file bug report?

Software :: GRUB2 Takes A Long Time To Load

Jan 5, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows XP on my system. After installing Ubuntu, it boots normally about once, and then the next time I try to boot, I have to wait a few minutes with it saying "GRUB Loading." I have read other threads about this that say that it is clearly a GRUB2 problem, and something about Windows overwriting something with the MBR; although I haven't booted into windows once in the process of installing Ubuntu (multiple times) or afterward. GRUB version 1.97~beta4.

I get the windows sign and then I get a black screen and windows does not load. It seems to be an easy problem to solve because I can actually boot windows 7 in

safe mode with no problems at all! The problem is there when I try to boot windows 7 normally. To be honest I only need windows for a project that uses MSQL server.

Ubuntu :: Opening New Windows When Starting Opera ?

Feb 11, 2010

I have switched to Opera because my Firefox eats my CPU and makes everything go slow (it even makes my music lag!) when I have a few tabs open or try to scroll on a fairly big site with pictures and flash stuff.

These problems are completely gone with Opera, but I would like it to behave more like my Firefox does. I use multiple workspaces all the time, so it really bugs be when Opera insists on opening new tabs in the window already open in another workspace. That takes away some of the point with multiple workspaces, if I need to drag opera along all the time. Making it show in every workspace is not an alternative, since I try sorting different tasks to different windows.

What I tried was to add the -newwindow flag to the opera launcher. This works, but however, I have to open the first tab manually (duh!) which is kind of unnecessary.

So how do I make Opera open new windows WITH a tab when I use the opera shortcut launcher? And if someone could throw in how I can make a startpage open instead of the ballot screen, it would be nice!

Debian :: Grub Load Error "Grub Loading Stage1.5. Grub Loading, Please Wait... Error 15"

May 23, 2010

When I try and boot my Debian computer I get the messages: Grub Loading stage1.5. Grub loading, please wait... Error 15 Is there any way of recovering from this - or is it simply a fresh install? I was attempting an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and despite a few hurdles it looked like it was all happening. Got the new kernel loading, and the new grub. It looked as though grub2 was working so I ran the grub-remove-legacy-support command (something like that) and now my computer won't boot grub or Linux.

I'm assuming the MBR on my harddrive is lost, however I don't know what state the partition is in. I'm guessing that maybe this has been lost as well. I tried a few tools from the Ultimate Boot CD but nothing here was able to re-install my grub or boot from any partition or even mount my file-system. I'm fearing the worst but would like it confirmed before I blow it all away with a new install.

Ubuntu :: After Starting A Program That Displays Graphics Some Windows Will Go Completely Black?

Jul 22, 2010

After running for a while, often after starting a program that displays graphics, such as Shutter, Gimp, Ocular, or maybe simply having previews in Dolphin (as some of my folders default to large previews)most menus, and some windows will go completely black. Some simply grey out (only ksystemlog does this that I have noticed so far)Blindly clicking anywhere on top title bar has no effect (would expect minimize/maximize etc to work if hitAlt-leftmouse or alt-middlemouse will allow window move/resize - black actively conforms to new window size/shape.

Often this blackening is preceded by a loss of all global hotkeys, which may not be related. With no visible menus or buttons, and with no hotkeys I am forced to hit the PC power button and allow kubuntu to shutdown. If I am lucky and hotkeys still work i can simply log out with ctrl-alt-shitft-del and logging in again fixes the issue.Linux betlogbox 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11 08:03:28 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Software :: Starting Firebird Database From Wine Windows-based Application

Oct 1, 2009

I have a Windows-only language lab program ('Logolab') which provides students with listen and repeat exercises on audio and video material loaded by the teacher. It operates in conjuction with a Firebird database which stores subtitles (I think) and the sequencing data (the lengths of each segment) for recording (a recorded piece will be subdivided into small audio/video segments during which the student repeats what's been said). The audio and video functions are run internally by Windows Media Player, and the video input must be in .WMV format for the system to function.Using Wine, I've managed to install the language lab program on Ubuntu, as well as the Firebird database program. However, each time I start the language lab program, I get the message "Firebird database not started!".There is a BIN folder with the language lab software that contains a .INI file with the following contents:

Perhaps that needs to be modified for Linux or Wine on Linux? I've tried changing the DataBase field with the Linux path to the appropriate .FDB file, and likewise the ServerName field to the Ubuntu computer name or the ip address, but to no avail. Lately, I've installed the Linux version of Firebird and Flame Robin (which I couldn't understand). If anyone can provide any help or suggestions, I'd be most grateful (it's the only thing preventing me from migrating 100% to Linux).

Ubuntu :: Install X64 Windows 7 Will Not Load?

Dec 18, 2010

so after i managed to install ubunut x64 my Windows 7 will not load...

my partition table looks like this:
Partition File System size
/dev/sda1 ntfs 100.00 MiB
/dev/sda2 ntfs 445.66 GiB
/dev/sda3 extended 20.00 GiB
/dev/sda5 ext4 19.12 GiB
/dev/sda6 unknown(swap?) 895.00 MiB
unallocated unallocated 1.02 MiB

currently I was using GParted to find this out. I think the Grub boot loader is pointing to the wrong partition for windows. This is because a few months back I had an uncessesful atempt to install ubuntu w/o grub and tried to use the windows boot loader.

I then realized that it did not work, so I was able to fix it using My Windows 7 recovery tools. So in Grub should it be pointing to /dev/sda1 for windows or /dev/sda2 ?
