Ubuntu :: Lock Up Ctrl-alt-F1 Will Not Switch To A Terminal

I am having difficulty with an Ubuntu 9.10 machine locking up. I have reinstalled the OS a number of times. I have the latest patches installed. I have another machine installed from the same CD that works fine. The computer is a Dell Optiplex GX260. When it locks up ctrl-alt-F1 will not switch to a terminal. ctrl-alt-esc does not do anything. ctrl-alt-backspace does not do anything. alt-sysreq-b will reboot the machine.
Graphics card is ATI Technologies Inc RV730XT [Radeon HD 4670]After fresh install of Debian Lenny VESA was used, neiher xserver-xorg-video-radeon or radeonhd worked.I installed ATI:s proprietary driver, after that there are 2 problems:
1) I can no longer switch to a text terminal with ctrl+alt+F# - it worked with vesa driver. There is no option "VTswitch" in xorg.conf 2) The new fglrx does not give 3D, also very bad performance - dragging windows on screen makes them stutter for instance.
I ran ubuntu 10.04 for about half a year now-but rarely logged into it. Recently, I wiped ubuntu 10.04 and installed lubuntu 11.04 with the intentions of ditching open box/lxde and just installing fluxbox. However, I like openbox/lxde combo a LOT so I'mma gonna keep it. My question is: I would like to be able to do one of two things: Either ctrl+alt+del to lock the workstation when I leave it OR have a window popup up with lock desktop/log-out/restart/shutdown options listed. I am familair with installing applications on linux and can use google fairly well so if someone knows a way to do the second option(preferable) and can get me off in the right direction about what pckgs I'd need that would be great! Thanks. John PS: there is a button like this by default on lubuntu 11.04 but it has NO lock desktop option on it.
Since I still want to do all my programming on Win32 platform, VirtualBox should be fine there, but would VirtualBox be able to manage games ( BF2, CSS )?If so then well I'm going to Ubuntu permenatly, if not, I'll just Dual boot between Windows & Ubuntu, Ubuntu for everything ( VirtualBox for programming ), and Windows os for Gaming.
My only problem there, is having to restart every time I want to play a game, that's why I was hoping VirtualBox could manage, wouldn't have to be any, fancy resolution.Also, with Firefox on linux, is it possible to use Ctrl- ( 1, 2, 3, etc... ) to switch tabs, on windows this is possible, and an a feature I love.
after karmic to lucid upgrade i ve got problem with "alt + f4" key combination. This should only close window, but it closes window and switch to tty4 (text mode) like ctrl + alt + f4 so i can switch between terminals with ctrl + alt +fX and alt+fX. I've looked at System - Preferences - Shortcuts and there everything is ok. What i've to do to fix this ?
I can't switch to shell with ctrl+alt+F1. The screen gets completely blank and nothing happens - though I can switch back to the GUI by pushing ctrl+alt+F7 again.I really miss having this option!
I lost those ALT+CTRL+RIGHT | LEFT combination to switch between my desktops. I even tried to change the combination using compiz and it also did not work. How can I restore this ?
I'm running fedora 13 on a Dell Latitude E6500. It's a dual 64-bit system.
It was working, but then I tried to swap caps lock and control.
I used: System->Preferences->Keyboard Layouts->USA->Options Then, under Control Key Position, I selected swap caps lock and control.
Now, my keyboard won't work in the Keyboard Preferences test area or in any other window or when the screen-lock comes on.
I tried logging out. I tried rebooting. I tried deleting my .gnome2 directory. Nothing seems to work. I can use the keyboard on other accounts, so the keyboard is not the problem.
I have a problem with Switch User on a newly installed Ubuntu 10.04 on Asus Eee 1101ha.When I try to use Switch User, I just get to the Lock Screen of the currently logged in user, where I'm asked to enter a password.There is also "Switch User" button on the Lock Screen - the screen gets black and then gets back to the same Lock Screen. Login Screen is not displayed.
not sure exactly when this broke, but for some reason I'm not able to use CTRL-ALT-F1 anymore to fall back to the first virtual console.I can kill X with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE just fine, but I'd like to be able to get a normal shell to kill things when I've messed too much with graphical stuff.

In our cluster of RedHat4 & 5 machines, if someone locks the computer and walks away no body can use it. Is there a feature in RedHat5, Gnome, KDE etc that would allow for the option of switching users at the lock screen, so more than one person can be logged in
For some reason since 9.10 CTRL-V doesn't seem to work in my terminal. Used to work just fine, but now I have to Rightclick Paste any commands.I cut my teeth on commandline inputs and this is a bit like having a dog and doing the barking myself
I have transferred my Ubuntu partition (along with Windows XP and Linux swap partitions) to a new HDD using TrueImage's sector-by-sector method. Ubuntu runs quite well after I've made the suggested updates/upgrades. System version now is 10:04 Lucid Lynx. However, I'm missing the ALT-CTRL-F1 .. F6 terminals. All I see is a pattern of vertical stripes in the colors of my gnome desktop. Each time I switch from graphic mode to textmode the pattern shows a different variation of these colors.
Can't get into terminal mode by pressing any hotkey CRTL+ALT+F1 .... F6.Displays seems to freeze, a blank screen is shown whit some bright spread pixels at the top. Although I can return to graphical mode by pressing CTRL+ALT+F7 without problems.
I have 3 layouts: USA, Russian and Hebrew. In Hebrew the W key is mapped to apostrophe, so Ctrl+W in Hebrew layout doesn't close tabs in Firefox. There is no workaround for it as I see by now, so I am trying to get it work this way:I want to map Ctrl+W in Hebrew layout(which is actually a Ctrl+') to be a Ctrl+w. I have noticed since installing ubuntu 10.10 a few weeks back, that pasting into terminals no longer works as expected. In earlier releases, shift+ctrl+v would paste the contents of the clipboard to the terminal. However, now shift+ctrl+v no longer does this. According to the keyboard shortcuts window, shift+ctrl+v is the shortcut for pasting. How can I find out if another program is using this keybinding and thus preventing me from pasting in a terminal? I've looked in System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts but there's nothing relevant in there. Is there a program that I can run to see how the system responds to me pressing shift+ctrl+v? Is there anything else that I can try to fix this problem. I've grown used to pressing shift+ctrl+v to paste now, and having to remember to press shift+Ins does slow me down
When I press Ctrl-C in any pseudoterminal (xterm, gnome-terminal, rxvt, text console and SSH) in Karmic Koala, the string ^C gets echoed to the terminal in Ubuntu Karmic Koala. This hasn't happened in Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope. I'd like to get rid of the extra ^C. Example:

I got the above by typing C, A, T, Enter, F, O, O, Enter, Ctrl-C. I want to get rid of the ^C, and get this for the same keypresses:

I tried setting stty -echoctl, which solved the problem for rxvt and xterm outside SSH, but it created a single-character HT when SSHing from an Ubuntu Hardy system, and it created a box with Unicode 0003 in it instead of the ^C in gnome-terminal. I want to see absolutely nothing when I press Ctrl-C. I'm using. I just installed ushare on Fedora 10 (yum install ushare is all it took to do), and followed the guidance then to configure sharing for an Xbox 360, [URL] the code below. Notice the last line...due to stopping process in the terminal via Ctrl+C. It appears to me, based on this ending UPNP sharing, that the first line will need to be run each time want to turn on sharing, right? I thought this would simply configure ushare sharing one time, and possibly intiate some sort of file sharing service on each boot, but this appears not to be the case. If I am right, does anyone know how I can develop a script to run at boot to allow ushare to open sharing and keep it open?
I installed Slackware 13.37 current 32 bit (kernel 2.6.38.7-smp) last saturday and almost everything works fine. I don't understand why I cannot use Ctrl-Ins and Shift-Ins shortcuts for copy and paste in console terminal. Shortcuts works fine in X terminal (fluxbox) Konsole... but they don't in text console.
I recently set up a family computer for a friend, and now his son is "experimenting" with the terminal (randomly entering commands). since he could accidentally do something bad, I am supposed to prevent him from using terminals, but only as hi user. I tried vlock and away, but with vlock it says 'this terminal is not a virtual console', and away can't seem to lock all consoles.
I have a ubuntu server PC with no xwindows just text command-line. Usually I use xlock but this PC has no graphics. How do I lock/unlock the PC while I'm away from it? I don't necessarily need a screen saver just a way to secure the terminal while I'm away without logging off.
vlock works, however it requires that I return to the shell to run it. Is there a way to assign a key combination to run vlock, so the current program doesn't have to be ended?
