Aug 11, 2011when I try to apt-get upgrade system or install a new package in synaptic or terminal, I see this:

So, before I have a problem - Synaptic opened, told that /var/lib/dpkg/status don't exist, in the web I read that sudo cp /var/lib/dpkg/status-old /var/lib/dpkg/

Feb 12, 2010I am having difficulty with an Ubuntu 9.10 machine locking up. I have reinstalled the OS a number of times. I have the latest patches installed. I have another machine installed from the same CD that works fine. The computer is a Dell Optiplex GX260. When it locks up ctrl-alt-F1 will not switch to a terminal. ctrl-alt-esc does not do anything. ctrl-alt-backspace does not do anything. alt-sysreq-b will reboot the machine.

Nov 25, 2010Having trouble figuring this out. I've got a package that I've installed from out-of-repos and Kubuntu feels the need to "upgrade" this package to a version that I do not want to use. I've found out how to do this in Ubuntu, but not in Kubuntu. A commandline solution would be fine, although I've googled it and not come up with any working results.

I tried vlock and away, but with vlock it says 'this terminal is not a virtual console', and away can't seem to lock all consoles.

Aug 11, 2011after getting my keyboard and mouse working (URL... not even when I was compiling kernels from floppies that came in the back of books did I have to work so hard to get the KEYBOARD working, sheesh), I have a mostly working system.However, Lock Screen does not work in any way, shape or form:
- It doesn't work via the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+L
- It doesn't work if I select it from the Power button on the upper-right
- It doesn't work if I press the Power button to suspend (even though all the correct things are ticked/unticked in gconf-editor)
- It doesn't work if I switch users and back
Now, I do have a laptop running 11.04 and its Lock Screen *does* work. The only difference I can find is that the laptop says gdm is running screensaver.If it shouldn't be running, why else might Lock Screen not be working?

Jul 9, 2010I recently tried to upgrade to 10.04 but during the upgrade my powerpack failed. Now 10.04 has been installed but I cannot access Synaptic through the drop down menu it says "Unable to get an exclusive lock". I've tried accessing it through Terminal which works but then the only option I have is to Partial Upgrade but then that freezes at the first stage saying the old database can't access the new (or something along those lines) then that screen just remains there. Also when I minimise any windows I have open they don't appear at the bottom of the screen I have to go to multi screen to find them.

May 1, 2011Using Lubuntu 10.10. I uninstalled Apache Server (it was once installed). But the update manager is cites many new Apache updates that I need. But again Apache is not installed anymore. Synaptic says it's not installed. I have a checker for orphaned packages it says nothing about Apache. Why does the updater say this? Maybe there's a "residue" of Apache somewhere?

Nov 3, 2010Running Landmarq Intel Atom DC330 Desktop I have just attempted to upgrade my desktop machine from Kubuntu 10.04 to Kubuntu 10.10. I used KpackageKit to do the upgrade which proceeded smoothly until the install packages phase, which seemed to complete and then repeat. I don't know the detail of what happened as I was out of the room.
The repeat almost completed, but then I got a set of error messages, which basically told me that KpackageKit was unable to install the upgraded packages. I closed KpackageKit, and closed the machine and tried a reboot. This time, I got as far as the splash screen, but although the cursor flashes, I can't type anything in the password box. In addition, the mouse pointer won't move. Using a different wireless mouse works, but I still can't type in a password.
However, the command ctrl+alt+sysrq+RSEIUB works, so the machine is accepting some keyboard input. I also know from using a live disc that my home directory is intact. I would like to revert to my 10.04 installation, and re-try an upgrade to 10.11 afterwards.

Sep 1, 2011I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?

When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly.It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'
I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.

Jun 23, 2010I'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.
I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.
Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.

I saw that there was no "xlock" package, so googling around, I saw it was replaced with xlockmore and xlockmore-gl, neither of which there seems to be a package for in the Squeeze repositories. I tried xscreensaver, but I prefer the simplicity of xlock (and I like that it doesn't leave a daemon runnig when not in use). Is there a way to safely install it, or should I just be looking for an alternative?
