I have a problem with Switch User on a newly installed Ubuntu 10.04 on Asus Eee 1101ha.When I try to use Switch User, I just get to the Lock Screen of the currently logged in user, where I'm asked to enter a password.There is also "Switch User" button on the Lock Screen - the screen gets black and then gets back to the same Lock Screen. Login Screen is not displayed.

I have to ctrl-alt-f1 to reboot. I've tried killing various process from the term, but nada. I've also tried uninstalling gnome-screensaver as was mentioned in another thread when I searched, but no joy there so far.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've run into a strange problem with GDM that I haven't managed to find a solution for yet, either by trying myself or googling, and I have run out of good ideas. I'll just infodump here about the problem and what I've tried etc;
I installed Ubuntu on a new PC a few weeks ago, setting it up with autologin for my mom and a separate user for myself, using the on/off-icon menu in the top-right corner to switch to my own user and back as needed, and logging the user out when done. This worked quite well.
However, a few days ago, this stopped working; logging out or trying to switch now leaves me with a blank black screen, without even a mouse pointer (but not off, the backlight is on).
EDIT: To clarify, this is an issue that only affects the GDM login screen, but that affects it whenever it is used, wether it is on boot (when not set to autologin), after logging out, or when trying to switch user.
At this point, I can usually use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a textmode login, and Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to the auto-logged in session (assuming I tried to switch, not logout).
I can't think of anything specific I did or installed around then that should be related in any way...
I tried disabling autologin and restarting gdm, which left me with the same black screen (which is still there after rebooting), instead of the expected login window. I managed to re-enable autologin by manually editing the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file, so that it would at least work for mom.
I've also tried to change which user is auto-logged in, thinking it might be a problem with my user account, but both users get an automatic session just fine when I restart gdm.
I thought it might be a problem with the video driver, but that's not the case - if I run zenity --info as root with DISPLAY set correctly, the dialog box appears on the screen just fine. It has no borders or titlebar (there's no windowmanager), and is apparently without keyboard focus, so since there's no visible mouse pointer I can't click the OK button... But since it appears, X is apparently up and running just fine, just has nothing to display other than a black background.
I tried purging and reinstalling gdm and gnome-session(-bin|-common), but that didn't help any.
Running ck-list-sessions after trying to switch indicates that there's a new session there, with session-type = 'LoginWindow', so it appears to think everything's fine.
Enabling debug output in the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file did get me some more debug output in the gdm logs, but it didn't really tell me anything, there weren't any obvious problems that I could see.
After some looking around, I've guessed that it's supposed to be running gdm-simple-greeter, which I assume would display a login box; trying to run it manually doesn't work though (it's missing some environment variables, and trying to add them based on the abovementioned debug output doesn't really help).
When playing a video file, the system suddenly "crashes" and loads the switch user screen, as if I had selected a different user in the switch user/shutdown panel at the top right of the screen. This seems to most commonly occur with .mp4 files, but also occurs with .avi. I have gotten this problem while playing videos in Totem Movie Player, VLC, and Banshee. My system has 4GB of Ram and Intel Dual Core T4200 processor (2.00 Ghz).

I am having difficulty with an Ubuntu 9.10 machine locking up. I have reinstalled the OS a number of times. I have the latest patches installed. I have another machine installed from the same CD that works fine. The computer is a Dell Optiplex GX260. When it locks up ctrl-alt-F1 will not switch to a terminal. ctrl-alt-esc does not do anything. ctrl-alt-backspace does not do anything. alt-sysreq-b will reboot the machine.

When I hit Alt+Ctrl+L my system is starting the ScreenSaver but not locking the screen. The keybinding is correctly set. This is happening in only root account but in another user account it works perfect !
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhat happens is that I resorted to deleting my .kde directory after my kid destroyed my profile where title bar, menu, konsole get broken. After deleting, I login again thus regenerating the .kde directory. To avoid my kid from messing my desktop, I tried to lock it. It does not lock.
It just need a KDE full restart perhaps since when I login the other day, it now works.
I'm updated to Slackware current for almost a month already and have not played a lot on KDE desktop (busy programming stuff).
However, on day I tried to lock the desktop in KDE to avoid the kid from destroying my cool desktop setting, but it didn't lock. Cool, so I tried screen saver and add an option to lock the screen.
When I test screen saver, it displays. But when I wait for 1 minute(I set it that way), it doesn't fire up. Not even after 15 minutes which I think the default.
It usually work before (several months ago) using the lower version of KDE. It is just last Saturday that I noticed it.
I tried to dig the profile management but I could not find anything relevant there.
I recently set up a family computer for a friend, and now his son is "experimenting" with the terminal (randomly entering commands). since he could accidentally do something bad, I am supposed to prevent him from using terminals, but only as hi user. I tried vlock and away, but with vlock it says 'this terminal is not a virtual console', and away can't seem to lock all consoles.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI work for a local community college, and we currently have web kiosks set up around the college. They have fairly old hardware and are currently running windows XP. However, with all the group policies and scripts required to lock them down, it can take 10+ minutes for the students to log in(we want authentication for someone to be able to use them).
Now, I have managed to get a few test computers to run fedora with openLDAP authentication and LTSP giving them a desktop with firefox. Now, the problem is that we don't want the user to be able to do anything but run firefox and, on some of them, print. I have been using gnome, gconf, and sabayon(not the distribution, the user profile tool) to attempt to lock down the desktop. However, anyone can just right click the gnome menu and add back in everything i disabled. While they wouldn't be able to do much harm, the point is that if they want to do work, we want them to go to our computer labs, instead of the kiosks. The kiosks are just for looking things up or getting on their e-mail.

I enabled a guest session for someone and came back to find them rooting through my files. By quitting the guest session, it goes back to the source user's desktop without requiring a password. Shouldnt it go to gnome-screensaver automatically? Can this be changed? Is it a bug?
to replicate: log into source user's account use the menu to start a guest session quit the guest session root through files un-opposed.

Unfortunately, the account does not seem to be locked or disabled. As root, runninng 'su test2 -c <some-command>' always sucessfully runs <some-command>, and leaves the failed attempt count at 6. /etc/shadow does not have an * or ! anywhere in the encrypted password for the 'test1' user.
What am I doing wrong? I thought that with the max attempts set to 0 in faillog, that the deny= parameter would be used. I thought I should be using su <user> -c <command> from the root account to test if the disable feature is working.

After about 2 mins it says something about a time-out (wish I could do screencaps). Then it will reset and have a gray window the same size as the password input window but on the upper portion of the screen, and a password entry window as normal, but in the lower part of the screen. I upgraded to latest 10.04 live x64 desktop today. Clean, fresh install.Before I was using 9.04 and had the same issue at first.I don't want the password lock screen when resuming from suspend.I disabled everything, lock in screensaver settings, all lock entries in gconf-editor. I also tried setting LOCK_SCREEN in /etc/default/acpi-support to false.Nothing helps Is this maybe a bug, since it's still beta? I don't know what else to do

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am experiencing a really annoying issue with ubuntu 10.04. Wether the "lock screen when screen saver is enabled"option is ticked or not, it will anyway request me to insert the password.
And that's but the lighter problem: Screen saver keeps poping on while I write, browse and whatever, and changing its properties won't help at all. It just keeps pestering me! (while i'm writing this, i've already had my screensaver popping in about 15 times)
And last but not least, even if I log as administrator and unthick the "request password"... it will always keep asking ... what to do?
my desktop cannot be locked anymore. Furthermore, after waking up from suspend, I am straight in the desktop, it does not ask me for my password anymore. The screensaver also does not activate anymore either. I'm still using Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Latitude D820.
View 4 Replies View RelatedLiving with others, I've made it a habit to lock my laptop if I walk away from it (Ctrl+Alt+L), but with the recent upgrade to 11.4 I've run into a problem: when I go to unlock my laptop it just gives me a black screen instead of the "enter your password" menu. All I get is the mouse.
The only work around I have for this is to log into a TTY and then restart the laptop.
In case it's significant, the exact process I go through is as follows: Lock my screen (Ctrl+Alt+L), close the laptop lid (power management is set to just blank the screen instead of suspend), walk away for 10+ minutes, open lid, and then I run into my error.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI need to access some things in "documents and settings" folders (my windows xp crashed). I believe I need to be root user in linux to do this. I am running a ubuntu linux live (uninstalled) cd. I am new to linux and I do not know if this is even possible. I want to copy some things from documents and settings folder to an external drive (as backup) but I cannot access them as things are now (linux gives me an error when I try) but I would like to do it in gui so I can physically "see" everything and look through it.
