Seems like a nasty bug in F13.after typing in wrong password, a 2nd correct attempt on gdm (or kdm) leads to a dark screen with a dash cursor blinking on the upper left - have to turn machine off. Then on next login, memory seems to race until properly shut down.

In the VeloxBoot.sh, if I don't press any key, my application starts after a timeout. If the user presses a key I want to have a login prompt. Unfortunately, if I start /bin/login, I have a prompt with login, but once I enter my login, it does not ask for a password and it says wrong password
We've just installed debian xfce lxde....after all this time to get it....when we boot up to the login screen it keeps saying wrong uder name or password
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm in LiveCD (Natty) I blew up the OS. Can't get past login & password. 'Puter just hangs there. I'm going to do a clean install, but want to make a copy of my /home. I tried gksudo nautilus to copy all of /home to an external hard drive (via USB). It won't copy all, saying that I lack permissions. I've read about recursively copying, etc. and cannot make out the sequence I need. I must copy all that is in my /home and preserve all the links, dependencies, file and directory ownership permissions and also must get the command for copying them from the external hard drive if the clean install goes bad.

I have 2 monitor on and Nvidia FX5200 set up as twinview
Monitor 1 is an old Sony CRT @ 1280x1024
Monitor 2 is a Visio HDTV @1920x1080
I have setup Monitor 1 to be the primary using nvidia-settings but the GDM login keeps sowing up in the second monitor ; before the HDTV I had a CRT TV @ 1024x768 and all was good. My theory is that GDM determines the center of the Screen (both monitors together) and then centers on that monitor. If this is true then how may I override this behavior and force the GDM login to show on my primary monitor?
Trying to set up my Yahoo account on KMail. After entering all the correct (as far as I know) server settings, ports, etc. and trying to check my mail from KMail, I get the following message.
Could not login to pop.mail.yahoo.com. The password may be wrong.
The server said: "[SYS/PERM] pop not allowed for user."
The password is definitely right. What is going on?
I have a kickstart script that attempts to create user "joeblow" with an encrypted password. The user is created okay, but the password does not seem to "take". After installation is complete, and the system is rebooted, this is the relevant portion of /etc/passwd:

Where there are two exclamation points, I would expect the encrypted password (as is the case for the root user, which is also created in the kickstart file).

After the install is complete, I reboot and attempt to log in as "joeblow", but no dice. If I log in as root, and manually put the above encrypted password into /etc/shadow for jowblow, I can then log in as joeblow.
I use a Dvorak keyboard. I recently installed F13, and the layout is correct in the console an after logging in, but at the login screen, it goes to QWERTY. I've tried all of the settings in the GUI configurators; all of those are set right. There is no xorg.conf; so, I can't change it that way.

Anyway, when I log in, I get the "Oh no! Something has gone wrong" (like I stated).
I have been searching this forum and google extensively for the last few hours, and I cant dig up anything useful. I have a very weird problem:
Install Fedora 12 from livecd on a widescreen monitor:
- Using Nvidia 96xx drivers for my Gforce2 MX
Everything runs fine at this point. Connect old 17" flatscreen and no network: Login freezes for about a minute after username selection, no password prompt, no mouse movement, no keyboard response, after timeout I return to login screen before username selection .. and can repeat this or.. At that point (or before that point) I can ctrl+alt F2 to 'terminal' screen, login works fine.

Works fine then, resolution is %^# tho, and cant change it at that point due to errors I get. I'm convinced the problem has nothing to do with my X configuration tbh. Booting from the LiveCD on this configuration works fine. I am tempted to think it has something to do with my GDM, but as my knowledge is limited, I cant figure it out. If I reconnect the widescreen, it all works fine ...
I rebooted my Fedora 11 server via SSH and when it came back up it booted the gui, but no option to log in just a mouse pointer and a spinning blue circle...nothing I can do to get it back.
I should add that I installed the latest updates this morning and this was the first reboot since then.
My fedora 11 had operated well for a few months, but today I can not login with the right password, it will return to the login GUI, it just like a circle. I am sure the password is right, because if I login with a wrong password fedora will warn me about it.

However, when it boots up it prompts me for my password so it can connect to my wireless network (I think it said something about not getting my user password at login). Is there anyway I can get it to remember this?
I would like to make this automatic because this will be a remote box that I will use as a file server, but it wont be turned on all the time. So I'll turn it on when I need it, but I'll need to connect to it remotely, so obviously it needs to be on the network.

1. I am currently using a basic fedora 14. I had a fedora 8 DVD that contained many packages including its installation (I mean it was bootable and had its iso image. Now my question is that is there any way by which I can install the packages(like OpenOffice.org) from that DVD to fedora 14? I have a slow internet connection and its not possible for me to download large files.
2. I installed some packages via yum. My friend also has fedora 14 but unfortunately he doesnt have a internet connection to download the files via yum and install them. Are the .rpm files downloaded via yum stored in some specific folder, so that I can transfer those files via a flash drive to his computer and install them directly there?
3. Is there a way to autologin my account so that I dont have to type my password everytime I switch on my PC?
4. Everytime and every session I try to access a ntfs partition, it asks for my root password. Any tricks to bypass this?
I have setup a nis server and client. At first I didn't have a local user defined on the client. The client then used the user and passwords from NIS, so that was ok.
The problem then is, that when the server is down, I couldn't login to my client anymore. So I created a local user with the same name on the client but with a different password (after I shut the nis server down, if nis server was on, I couldn't create a local user with the same name). I then edited etc/nssswitch.conf as follows:

If NIS server is on: client has to login with the nis password If NIS server is down: client has to login with the local password (as fallback)
However the actual behaviour is that I can only login with the local password now. The NIS pasword doesn't seem to be used anymore.
