Ubuntu :: LPR Printing With Set Resolution Option (CLI)?

Apr 9, 2010

I have a shell script set up to print a test page on a couple of my rarely-used large format printers. These are expensive boys, and if they are left unused for too long, their cartridges dry up. So once a week, cron runs the script and everyone is happy. Except I'd like to change the print resolution for one of the printers. lpr does not seem to have an option to send a command to the printer for setting resolution. Is there another command that I could use under Ubuntu within Linux to do what lpr does, but also offers the setting of print resolution?

OpenSUSE :: No Color Option And Non Double Sided Printing

Apr 6, 2011

I have a Lexmark 736DN printer (color, 2-sided printing). With openSUSE 11.3, there was non specific driver to pick during printer installation: I picked up "Lexmark C772dn Foomatic/Postscript" and everything was fine (at least I didn't notice problems). With openSUSE 11.4, there's no such a driver! Even more, the list of drivers for lexmark is a lot, lot shorter than the list present in 11.3. C772dn is not present so i picked up "Lexmark 4076 - CUPS + Gutenprint v5.2.6": but there is no color option and non double sided printing! what's up? Maybe I miss a rpm with printer's drivers (not installed by default)?

Ubuntu :: Printing / Scanning Resolution Stuck At 600dpi?

I have installed Lucid 64bit and everything is working OK except for my printer / scanner.
I have a Canon Pixma MP520 and when I switched it on and plugged it in Lucid identified it and installed the necessary drivers.

I have tried printing and scanning (scanning using Simple Scan and Xsane) but I can't get any more than 600 dpi resolution (my printer / scanner is capable of 4200 resolution).I have tried changing the resolution in the scanning packages but the resolution stays the same.

Ubuntu :: Resolution Does Not Give The Option For 1366x768

Sep 20, 2010

I am having a bit of an issue with xubuntu's resolution detection. I currently have a monitor plugged into my machine, the xubuntu machine picks up the native resolution of 1920x1080, but for some reason it does not give the option for 1366x768. i find this weird because any monitor that can do 1920x1080 should be able to do 1360x768 as well. The machine is running an intel card, so manual resolution changing via nvidia control panel isnt an option. Im wondering, what is the simplest way to enter a custom resolution into xorg.conf, or any other easy methods of adding the 1360x768 option into the machine?

Ubuntu :: Ubuntu 9,10 System/administration/printing Option Disappeared

Feb 16, 2010

I used the system/administration/printing option to set up a printer (Lexmark X4650).

The exact driver wasn't available, so I chose one 'close' to mine, but it wouldn't print.

I followed various threads to try to sort this, but now the system/administration/printing option has disappeared.

I can go in to [url] and set up a printer again, but this still doesn't work and the option in system/administration/printing still isn't there!

Whilst I see that there are issues with some Lexmark printers, which I can fire-fight, it's the fact that

I've obviously done something to delete the Printing option that is the issue!

Ubuntu :: Printing With Exact Size Photos And With Poor Auto Colour Printing But The Situation Remains Unchanged

May 31, 2010

I expected more from ubuntu 10.4 with regards to printing with exact size photos and with poor auto colour printing but the situation remains unchanged! for instance .. the photo size configurations for ubuntu/fspot/gimp and others are not compatible with my printers (HP and Brother) .. here in Europe a typical standard size photo (10x15inches or 150x100mm are not even on the Ubuntu listing? I have tried all listed possibilities including "custom" (which does not seem to ever work correctly?)and the result at best is photos with uneven boarders or at worse my printer goes a bit crazy with much wasted photo paper and expensive ink ...even photos selected for "no boarders" still produces photos with the self same uneven boarders.

I have tried pretty much everything over time following advice in this forum and including using HPlip and updating drivers required for my Brother printer but the root problem seemingly lies with the Ubunto photo size setup listing. Working with Ubuntu over the years I have found that it can do pretty much everything that Windows can do except for this dam ongoing photo quality and configuration problem.

Ubuntu :: Changing A Display Resolution If You Have A Higher Resolution In 9.1?

I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, and was just wondering if there is a problem if you load Ubuntu 9.1 and have a display that's higher than 1024x768. I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

Hardware :: Resolution Changed - Can't Return To Normal Resolution

Nov 20, 2010

I was evaluating a live distro on a USB drive and the resolution got changed from my normal 1680X1050 to 1024X768. I normally run SuperOS (ubuntu derivative) at 1680X1050 on my 22" LCD flatscreen monitor. The users manual for the monitor says that the optimum resolution is 1680X1050. Now when I go to system, preferences, monitors the monitor is unknown and the highest resolution that is available is 1360X768. I have clicked on Detect Monitors but not sure anything is happening. I have went to system, administration, additional drivers but none show up. The OSD menu for the monitor is showing 1380X768. I haven't been able to make any changes to the setting. I push the button that is supposed to get me into the sub-menu but nothing happens.

Fedora Installation :: Get To Start The Install Process In A Resolution Other Than The "Optimum Resolution"?

Does anyone know what boot parameters to use or how to get Fedora to start the install process in a resolution other than the "Optimum resolution"? resolution=640x40 vga=ask. These do not work. They set the debug display but when the graphical portion starts it defaults to the "optimum resolution" and the message displays "Cannot Display This Video Mode". As you consider the answer, think this is a new computer, blank hard disk, etc. I am installing Fedora 10. Tried 11 and Vista seems less buggy, prefer 10 or 9.

Ubuntu :: Printing Using LP Or LPR?

Mar 15, 2011

I have a label printer connected to a windows machine and its shared. And other windows machines can print to this label printer. But I need to be able to print to it from the linux box using lp or lpr. I have been following this article on how to get the labels printing, but I am unable to have any luck whatsoever.

Here is where I am at:
bennett@ezyvet:~$ smbclient -L AECRECEPTION -U administrator
Enter administrator's password:
Domain=[VSG] OS=[Windows 7 Professional 7600] Server=[Windows 7 Professional 6.1] .....

I also have done this:
bennett@ezyvet:~$ sudo lpadmin -p AECLABEL -h 192.168.58.116 -i smb://AECRECEPTION/AECLABEL -P /home/bennett/drivers/zebra2844/zebra4.ppd
lpadmin: Unable to connect to server: Connection refused

The firewall on the windows machine has turned off. I can see 2 printers, cups cant find any more printers. It just says its searching for eternity. I believe the only reason why the 2 printers show up in cups is because they are network printers?

Ubuntu :: Can't Imagine Why Printing Is So Off?

May 2, 2010

I was running Ubuntu Karmic Koala in a Dell Optiplex 8200. I wasn't having any problems, but it was running a bit slow. To fix this, I loaded a new graphics card and loaded Lubuntu so I could use LXDE. LXDE worked fine, but the associations on PC Manager were broken, so I switched back to Gnome. Ever since then, I've had a few problems.

1) The desktop image is black and all the icons that should be there are gone. If I browse to the Desktop via terminal (or Nautilus) everything is still there. If I view the desktop setting via the desktop setting control, it's set there, too. However, when I shut down/log out, I briefly see the desktop I set, before all goes black.

2) Printing is now VERY slow. It takes about minutes per page. I assume there's some file I have to either edit or delete to restore the desktop appearance, but I can't imagine why printing is so off.

PS - I was going to add tags, but I can't seem to type any in - weird.

Ubuntu :: Printing GUI Not Working?

Aug 11, 2011

I am hopping to get some help with a printing application problem. When I go to System>Administration>Printing, I get nothing. I have found several possible solutions, but these did not work for me.

First, from Ubuntu Bugs, following the [URL]... But Bug 210738, file 04/02/2008, doesn't fix my issue. I did getting the following results by running 'system-config-printer' in a terminal:

tim@dell-desktop:~$ system-config-printer
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/system-config-printer.py", line 104, in <module>

[Code]....

but this did not fix it either, At this point I ought to mention that I can print to my existing printers, but I wanted to add a new printer. I have no idea when this problem occurred, maybe when I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.4 LTS (Hardy Heron) to Ubuntu 10.4 LTS, but I can't be sure. To add the printer I followed this link {URL]... and was able to add the new printer.

But, after all is said and done, I think the GUI should just work, especially if we want Ubuntu to be more ubiquitous on the desktop.
