Ubuntu :: Kubuntu Crashes 10.10 - Windows Decorator

Mar 9, 2011

I have always used ubuntu (gnome) desktop but recently I decided to try Kubuntu (kde).

It has been many years since I last used KDE. And I decided to install it on my laptop; thus running KDE and Gnome side-by-side on a 10.10 x64 installation.

I have noticed that KDE looks really slick and that it still is massively more complicate compared to Gnome, this complication does allow for more customisation.

But I am facing some problems particularly with stability.

Every time I boot into KDE, it crashes complaining about window decorations. I am using a T410 lenovo.

Ubuntu :: After Installing Fglrx, Kde4-window-decorator Crashes When Run Compiz?

Sep 24, 2010

I was using the open source ATI drivers and KDE's compositing worked, so I hadn't installed compiz. I wanted to try fglrx because I thought a) I might be able to get temperature readings, and b) it might stop Kubuntu from making my computer incredibly hot (in Windows 7 it stays cool). So I installed fglrx by enabling it in the restricted hardware drivers thing, and things worked, but compositing was disabled and no matter what I did I couldn't enable it. So I installed compiz. When I run compiz, I get the following output:

Code:
toby@tensile:~$ compiz --replace
Starting kde4-window-decorator

Ubuntu :: Kubuntu Crashes On Login Screen?

May 1, 2011

I saw some pictures of Kubuntu online and thought it looked awesome. I installed it from Gnome using the command "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop". It installed fine, no errors. I logged off and picked Plasma Workspace or whatever its called from the menu and it showed a black screen for about 7 seconds, then showed a clear bar with a hard drive icon fading in. Then it crashed back to the login screen. I rebooted and tried again: same thing. I installed xfce and it works perfectly. Gnome still works. Ditto for Unity. But kde keeps crashing. PS: Graphics card is an ATI Radeon.

Ubuntu :: Random Freezes And Crashes On Kubuntu 11.04

i've been running Kubuntu 11.04 for a couple weeks now and trying to transition away from windows but i have had this problem with seemingly random system freezing and crashing i run kubuntu 11.04 64bit on a dell studio 1558 with a core i5, intel hd graphics, and 6gb ram.

my laptop after awhile will just freeze and all i can do is a hard reset, sometimes the screen will go black with a bunch of text, but i think that only happens when virtualbox is running b/c i can sometimes get back to the desktop, but it will freeze nevertheless (i run win7 in vbox for certain things i need like itunes and office).. i do notice that my laptop is getting pretty warm, but i don't know if that's related b/c it always did under windows

Ubuntu Installation :: Precautions To Take When Upgrading Windows On Windows/kubuntu Dualboot PC?

May 31, 2010

I have a Vista/Kubuntu dualboot, with grub2 as my loader. Because i have read that Windows likes to ignore something else present on the system and overwrite everything with itself. So i installed Vista, then Kubuntu. Now i want to upgrade my Vista to Win7. My question is - what should i do in order to keep my current dualboot intact (Grub2 as a loader, and kubuntu fully functional). I fear Win7 might even never ask me about keeping my kubuntu dualboot, just overwrite everything. PS: My bootinfoscript output

Ubuntu :: How To Disable Window Decorator

May 10, 2010

For testing purposes, I'd like to disable windows decoration on my desktop. However, I don't know how to do such a thing, I can't find a parameter for gtk-window-decorator nor emerald that can disable them. I have also tried disabling window decoration in compiz settings but after disabling the check mark for windows decoration it is automatically marked again after a couple of seconds

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Classic Window Decorator

May 1, 2011

Gave unity a try, did not like it, switched to classic. I had pretty much figured out eye candy in previous versions, but I can't change the window border in 11.04. If I enable emerald as the window decorator under compiz settings, I get a blank window border, regardless of which emerald theme I select. If I click the default under compiz settings and use compiz-decorator, I also get a blank window border. If I use gtk-window-decorator, I then have a proper window border, but I have no way to change it. With it, I can use appearance preferences and change themes, colors, icons, etc., but selecting different window borders under customize has no effect at all. I don't like the window border I'm stuck with, anybody know how to switch these in 11.04?

Ubuntu :: GTK Window Decorator Overpowering Emerald

Jul 30, 2010

In the Emerald Themer, I'm able to apply a theme, but only the title bar changes. The rest of the window remains the theme the themes of 'right click > Change Desktop Background > Theme Tab'. (Yes, I have tried the emerald --replace thing)In short, the theme of the window is kinda half-and-half between Emerald and GTK. Screens attached.(Screen shot 1 is illustrating a emerald theme, with matching gtk theme, screen 2 is showing the same emerald theme, but this time with a different GTK theme. Also, ignore the odd look of the images, it's a twinview setup with screen one zoomed in)

Once this occurs all the menu bars disappearing and I cannot move any of the windows, minimise/maximise, and while I am able to close most windows via their menu's it is really annoying! General :: Gtk-window-decorator Does Not Work With XFCE?

Jul 13, 2011

I really a newbie to xfce. I was using gnome 2 orignally then since I'm using Arch Linux (64-bit), it was updated to Gnome 3. After long weeks of daily use, I didn't like gnome 3. Now, I decided to use xfce. I did a fresh install (after formatting my hdd) of Arch, I put installed XFCE + SLIM login manager. Almost all works fine until I decided to install Compiz. After installing Compiz, for some reason gtk-window-decorator --replace (the one that you put under CCSM > Window Decoration > Command) does not work. Only "emerald --replace" and "kde4-window-decorator --replace" works. Unfortunately, I don't like emerald. When I run gtk-window-decorator --replace in the terminal it gives me this error:

Code:

gtk-window-decorator: error while loading shared libraries: libmetacity-private.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I made sure I installed the complete compiz+gtk package from pacman. BTW, I never had a problem with gnome 2 + compiz + gtk-window-decorator. I don't know if I have to do something extra in xfce to make gtk-window-decorator work.

EDIT: FYI, I use fusion-icon as an autostart application for me to automatically start compiz during startup.

Ubuntu :: Kubuntu Better For Less Experienced Windows Users?

Jul 24, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu regularly for about a year and although it has it's problems I have been touting it's strengths. One of which is not having to worry about viruses and spyware. Some of my friends want to try Linux because they are tired fighting viruses and spyware and the lengths & expense they have to go to protect their system. These people are on the low end of experience with Windows so I was wondering if Kubuntu would be a better choice for them to make the transition. What are your thoughts?

Ubuntu :: Kubuntu / Windows 7 Dual Boot Setup?

Feb 18, 2010

I just bought a Dell 537s machine and configured it for dual boot of Windows 7 and Kubuntu 9.10. On my old dual boot machine I had the Windows System and the Linux System on different disk partitions. That way I could write fstab in such a way as to make the Windows System read-only as seen from Linux, so Linux couldn't mess up any Windows System files (and since Windows can't read ext3, Windows couldn't mess up the Linux System).

But the new machine came with Windows 7 installed and gobbling up 3 primary partitions. Kubuntu installed itself in such a way that Linux can read/write to the Windows System. This makes me nervous that Kubuntu might be able to mess up Windows 7.

Is there any way to make specific Windows 7 directories/files unwriteable as seen from Linux without altering their behavior in Windows 7?

Ubuntu :: Kubuntu Natty Successfully Runs Windows XP

Jun 27, 2011

I recently bought an IdeaPad Z570 laptop with Sandy Bridge Intel Core i5 processor, 3 GB RAM etc.I still have things that I am forced to go to Windows for, so I had to make it a dual boot system. And I went and installed Windows 7 because that's what Lenovo provides the drivers for.

But to my dismay, lots of stuff, especially my Keyman keyboards, didn't work on Windows 7. So I installed Windows XP!But there are no drivers for this latest hardware for Windows XP. So what did I do?Installed VirtualBox on Kubuntu and installed Windows XP as a guest system using it! Linux/Kubuntu takes care of the hardware (or something like that).Installing VirtualBox Guest Addons from Multiverse also enables me to share directories between the Linux host and Windows guest, so I can access the files on my Windows D drive by mounting it in Linux (which I do by default in /etc/fstab anyway) and sharing it via VirtualBox Shared Folders.Given that Intel Virtualization Acceleration technology is inbuilt into the new processor/chipset, I don't feel much difference in speed!

I played around with Kubuntu for a while, it looks really nice but I decided to stick to Ubuntu. So now I would like to remove Kubuntu, but I don't know how. The same goes for Windows, as soon as I have finished my projects with windows software. I would like to remove it as well, so that finally my computer runs only on Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Safe To Dual Boot Kubuntu With Windows 7?

I really like running dual boot systems and this is my first W7 machine. Is it vaguely safe to attempt to install Kubuntu 9.10 on this system? It still smells new and I'd hate to wreck it this soon, LOL. The vast amount of info on this forum along with the sheer number of posts makes it difficult to sift through sometimes.

Ubuntu :: Wubi Crashes Windows 7

Jan 31, 2011

I am preparing to install Ubuntu server to run the server I am building. Both the server and Ubuntu are new to me. In preparation to this I installed Wubi on my Windows 7 laptop. It installed nicely and works smoothly. Unfortunately when I went back into W7 it has crashed 5 times in a row. Sometimes I got 5 minutes into the running of windows. The last time it crashed before I could even log in. I am unable to determine what is going on as i can't get around in my Windows for very long. Fortunately the Ubuntu side of my computer is still working well.

My W7 install is on a smaller partition (80GB). Would the Wubi installed on this same partition and maybe crowding the W7 install? Should I create another partition to install the Wubi onto or just install a Ubuntu on a separate partition? How should i go about troubleshooting this?

Ubuntu :: Windows Crashes Since Installed It

Jul 23, 2011

want to say that I was a windows user just about a week ago. Then I installed ubuntu on a USB flash drive, just for fun, and now it's installed as main OS on my laptop and the only thing I use windows for is syncing my iPod touch with iTunes. (Yes, I know about other possibilities to copy music to it from ubuntu, but I want to continue using iTunes.)

Now my main problem is that since I installed ubuntu (10.10 Maverick Meerkat), my windows (Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit) sometimes crashes during startup. Sometimes it boots up perfectly normal, then in some cases it crashes at the first attempt to boot and when I retry and choose "Start Windows normally" it works just fine and then there are the times when it crashes everytime I try to boot. I wasn't able to find out why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I also removed all USB devices during startup but that didn't change it.I noticed that when I start Windows in safe mode first, it works, then I restart and choose normal mode and it works too.Has anybody experienced this issue and/or knows a way to fix it? It's just annoying to have to try several times just to be able to keep my iPod synced.
