Ubuntu :: Kubuntu Maverick Slow Boot?

May 26, 2011

I swapped out the hard drive on my laptop for a bigger one and put Kubuntu 10.10 on it back in March. The one big complaint I have is that it has a ridiculously slow boot time in comparison to Ubuntu 10.04. I have since installed most of the Gnome Ubuntu desktop through the repos and switched from kdm to gdm but I still have this relatively long period of blank screen with cursor until it goes straight to the gdm. The plymouth boot screen won't show at all. Is there a relatively simple fix for this?

I should add that I am not interested in updating to Natty. I have a limited bandwith I can use and a lot of accumulated software through the repos that would require several gigabytes of reinstall.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Kubuntu (Maverick) - No CD Playback

Aug 6, 2011

Using Kubuntu Maverick. It's probably all my fault but I cannot get CD's to play.
Amarok: for the life of me, I cannot understand how to get CDs to play. In Lucid Lynx CD playing was unusable because it would crash by the second or third song; now, I cannot even get the program to start playing my CD.
KsCD: worked in Lucid Lynx, crashes in Maverick.
KPlayer: it does play the CD, but it does so jerkily, that is, it stops every 10-15 seconds. Unusable.
Kubuntu is not a crappy OS that cannot even play a CD.

If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?

Ubuntu :: VDPAU Slow And Jump In Maverick?

Oct 23, 2010

I recently upgraded to Maverick. I did a clean install on my system. I am running NVIDIA drivers from the X-Swat repo. Whenever I try to play a mkv file using Gnome Mplayer it is very jumpy and laggy. VLC, using it's new hardware acceleration, won't even display video, though it does output the audio. I experienced none of these problems with my 10.04 setup. I am unsure if it is a player bug, a driver bug or something with the VDPAU library itself.

Ubuntu :: Maverick - Sometimes Very Slow - Mouse Lags - Low Cpu Load ?

Nov 10, 2010

Since I upgraded to Maverick, every now and then (maybe once an hour) my system becomes very slow for about half a minute. The mouse cursor reacts only very slowly and also applications freeze for for some time.

This happens without the CPU being on full load or the hard disk being active.

I made a clean ubuntu installation on a new hard drive a week ago, but the problem persists.

I have a Thinkpad R400 with an Intel GMA 4500 graphics card an an Intel T5670 Core 2 Duo processor. I'm running the most up to date stable version of ubuntu. Kernel 2.6.35-22.

I know the description of the problem is very vague, but it's hard to describe it more accurately. I couldn't find anything helpful on google or the forum. If you have any ideas what might cause the problem or which log files might provide useful information, please let me know. Most importantly, the problem did not occur before I upgraded to Maverick.

Ubuntu :: Persistence In Maverick Flash Install VERY Slow

Jan 15, 2011

I've been butting heads with a problem for about a week now. For a while I've been running a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) off a 4 GB Kingston DataTraveller Flash Drive. Using partimage, I've managed to install this Maverick Ubuntu and load it with Audio Stuff from UbuntuStudio....plus wineasio and some Windohs audio software, then save the images of the partition usb stick (win32 livecd partition and casper-rw persistence partition).I've also done the same thing with a linuxaudio distro called pure:dyne. I restore and use either according to my needs. Obviously 4GB isn't a lot of space....so over the holidays I went out and bought the 8GB version of the DataTraveller. Two weeks later I'm still trying to get things to work right.

The problem is that when I create the casper-rw partition and boot into Ubuntu things slow to a snail's pace. Ubuntu takes over 5 minutes to boot up. Installing anything with Synaptic or whatever takes 5x as long as with the 4GB version of the flash drive. Everything works rather well....although multitasking is laborious, if possible at all. At first I thought it was the usb-key itself. After returning it (twice) I realised this just wasn't the case. 3 different flash drives had performed exactly the same way. Googling around over the last few days I found I'm not the only one to come across this problem...but still no solution.

What makes things weirder is that today I installed pure:dyne on that same stick and it works perfectly...running as smoothly (almost) as from a normal harddrive. Weirder still is the fact that pure:dyne is built from ubuntu itself...the only difference (as far as the whole usb-creation business goes) is that the persistence file/partition is named "live-rw" instead of "casper-rw".

I'd settle for pure:dyne...except it's built on "lucid" not "maverick"....two of my 3 computers have graphics driver issues with pure:dyne and the soundcard support is spotty (which is strange for a distro specialising in audio production) and wine (and therefore vst/i support) is not nearly as good. If anyone has any clue what goes on here I'd be very interested. In the meantime I'll run pure:dyne on the one computer that likes it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Maverick Wireless RT2800PCI - Keep Getting Disconnected And Loading Websites Is Really Slow

I just installed 10.10 for netbooks, and apparently it's using the RT2800PCI driver for my wireless NIC in my EeePC 901. That driver is causing havoc with my school network, I keep getting disconnected, and loading websites is really slow.

Now I know that 10.04 uses a different driver RT2860 which seems to work far better on this network.

How to change to the driver from lucid. Or does anyone know of an even better solution? I've heard rumors about something called ndiswrapper...

Ubuntu :: Computer Running Slow With All Versions Of Kubuntu

My friends computer is extremely slow with all versions of kubuntu. Its very slow to boot, very slow to load applicatons, very slow to switch between windows, very slow to do anything. I can't think of what would be causing the slowness, its not new, doesn't have any fancy hardware AFAIK, but it runs XP perfectly well, its probably a 2.0+ghz pentium 4 processor. Do you think it could be a kernel chipset issue? Or perhaps a graphics driver/window manager issue? I don't know what the hardware is, is there a command I can run to list all the hardware?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot To XP Of Maverick On Dual-boot System

Nov 10, 2010

When I first installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot (about 18 months ago), I had problems booting to XP, which were eventually solved for me in this thread, which set Windows to boot Ubuntu, rather than the other way round.

I've just had to do a fresh install of Maverick, following a major problem, and I'm back to being unable to boot XP. The error is different from before and I don't want to start guessing at what to do about it and screwing things up still further.

The GRUB menu lists Ubuntu first, then Windows XP. If I choose XP, it takes me to my previous boot menu, with Windows as the first option. However, selecting this gives me

Code:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>system32
toskml.exe

Please re-install a copy of the above file. Windows and Ubuntu are on separate hard drives. XP was fine until I re-installed Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Maverick Meerkat Failed To Boot

Oct 11, 2010

I am using Lucid for last 6 month and I am really amazing for its stability of using. And I am a Desktop user. However, Yesterday I have downloaded the 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Desktop (32 Bit). I have made a Startup Disk using UBUNTU Startup Disk Creator for that .iso which I have downloaded yesterday. That is a USB Live Disk. But the sad news is its not being able to boot my PC. where my PC configuration is not so bad.

Pentium Dual Core E2200 @2.20 Ghz
Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2C motherboard
2GB DDR2 RAM with 800 bus speed
1TB HDD

(I also tried disconnecting the HDD and my DVD Rom, same problem arises) The boot screen is trying to boot the PC but its doing for a long time, for about 10 mins, nothing reports it. I have press ESC to see wats happening beside this. Then I have seen a text there. Which is similar to the below (may have some spelling mistakes) "Process 283 Glib warning getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)" I hve checked the .iso SUM several times, where everything is ok.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Display On Boot With Maverick 10.10

Oct 11, 2010

I just upgraded my laptop to 10.10 and now when I boot the display doesn't show anything. This laptop worked flawlessly on 10.04. I can tell the underlying system is fine, because if I type my boot password the hard disk activity picks up like it is continuing to boot, and CTRL+ALT+DEL reboots the computer as one would expect. When I boot using an old kernel (a leftover from 10.04 I think) via GRUB the system boots normally. What can I do about this? My laptop is an HP Elitebook 2730p. According to the specs it uses an Intel GMA 4500MHD for graphics. I am using the 64-bit version of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot After Upgrade To Maverick?

Nov 19, 2010

I just upgraded my old laptop to Maverick, and something went wrong. The update process crashed near the end. I had to kill the window. Tried to do a dist-upgrade but nothing happened, so I rebooted. After the reboot, I got a black screen, showing "Disconnected from Plymouth", and a login prompt. But the keyboard is disabled, so I can't even log in. If I try the recovery mode, I get a menu with options to get to a command line, but the keyboard is still disabled (only Ctrl-Alt-Del works).I already had a similar error in Lucid: the black screen with the Plymouth error showed up, but after a few seconds X started anyway and everything went fine. Now I'm stuck.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Can't Dual Boot Maverick?

Jan 26, 2011

I have one machine in my house which doesn't run Linux, and that is a new iMac (a few months old). It has 4GB DDR3 Ram, an intel core i3 chip @ 3.06GHz, and a ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics card.I want to dual boot Ubuntu (I have a disk with Maverick on it).But I have read the wiki and I dont really understand alot of it. Right at the beginning, it says:"This information will not work for iMac (11,1) users and recent versions of Ubuntu (e.g., Maverick). The presence of the bios-grub partition that the Ubuntu installer creates by default (e.g., sda3) causes a conflict that prevents syncing the GPT and MBR partition tables."Does this mean that I can't dual boot Maverick? What does it mean by 'iMac(11,1)'?

Ubuntu :: Flashing Cursor After Grub Boot Up In Maverick 10.10?

Oct 28, 2010

I installed Ubuntu a while ago, but sometimes (about half the time), when I boot my computer, go into the Grub bootloader, then whether Grub selects Ubuntu for me (not sure if this is an error as well, but I've found that if I leave it without pressing any keys, then Grub just boots into Ubuntu for me (also, it's the top option)) or I select Ubuntu, it then flashes a cursor (a '_' character) on the screen (it's also in the same font as the font used by BIOS, so I assume at this moment, it's in BIOS).

Next, one of two things happen. Either I have to wait a few seconds, then it boots into Ubuntu, OR, it just hangs like that, not booting into Ubuntu, and not responding to any key presses or anything, forcing me to power off my machine using the hardware button. My specs, generated from hardinfo, are:

Code:
-Computer-
Processor : 2x Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz

Ubuntu :: Maverick Takes Too Long To Boot (1.5 Minutes)?

My laptop takes a whole damn 1.5 minutes to boot up and login (measured according to bootchart; I have auto-login enabled) (The majority of this 1.5 minutes is taken up after boot up, so it might indicate a problem with Xorg.)I don't know whether this is relevant, but when I boot up, a message gets displayed: "ata4.01: failed to resume link (SControl 0)". Ubuntu :: Very Slow Boot Time On AMD 30m / USB Hardware Doesn't Work After Computer Boot?

Mar 21, 2011

I've been a long time Windows user, but I've started a small firm and because of lack of funds, I've decided to install Ubuntu on my company's PCs.I have 8 PCs in total - 6 of them with Intel CPUs, and the last two with AMD CPUs. I bought the extra two computers because I've managed to find an extra two people to work at my company, and AMD-based PCs are cheaper so I've decided to buy them instead of Intel.Long-story short, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and boot time takes about half-an-hour. After the computers finally boot, USB hardware doesn't work at all. I was forced to buy PS/2 keyboards & mice and they both work fine after the PCs boot.I don't know what's causing this delay.I've enabled Cool 'n Quiet from BIOS.I've tried several instructions like editing the /etc/modules file.I've installed cpufreqd, tried to configure it, but it didn't work.I've check the CPU stats and my CPUs are running at 800MHz. I can't believe nobody managed to fix the 800MHz problem as I've noticed it's quite common among AMD Ubuntu users. I think I've tried almost anything that I've found on this forum.I can't keep asking my employees not to reboot their PCs. Both Chrome/Firefox crash a lot on Ubuntu so they're forced to restart their computers. The computer specs are: AMD Athlon II X2 240 dual-core @ 2.800MHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, etc.
