I tried to install the beta version of maverick with no luck. I used usb creator to put maverick on a memory stick. When I went into live mode everything worked perfectly so I thought why not install it. I then tried to do this but after filling out all the required info it wouldn't install. I clicked the install button and the installer froze up. I currently have ubuntu netbook remix (9.04) installed on it in desktop mode. I also, awhile ago, try installing lucid (both desktop and netbook remixes) and had a similar problem with them. They both stalled installing at the 15% mark. Now with this problem with maverick I am wondering why this could be happening. I have used different memory sticks so I have ruled that out as a problem. They all have worked flawlessly and speedily in live mode.

I've just had to do a fresh install of Maverick, following a major problem, and I'm back to being unable to boot XP. The error is different from before and I don't want to start guessing at what to do about it and screwing things up still further.
The GRUB menu lists Ubuntu first, then Windows XP. If I choose XP, it takes me to my previous boot menu, with Windows as the first option. However, selecting this gives me

have tried to replace WindowsXP with ubuntu netbook 10.10 on my Acer Aspire one (model ZG5), I opted for erasing the disk completely to just have ubuntu on the machineit runs perfectly from the USB drive, but will not boot up after a full installation, I just get a black screen with flashing underscore cursorthere are several threads about this problem but I cannot glean a solution, I have used 2 downloads as I thought the first iso might be corrupted, but still cannot get the system to start upwhat is the next step, is it worth persevering or trying an alternative distro?

(Fedora-sd) Since aspire can't boot directly from internal sd slot because bios do not see sd slot as a boot option, I use a second sd insert on a usb adapter with grub in it (Grub-sd)(actually i use this way to boot Ubuntu 9.10)
I have done the same thing from Ubuntu side (add module too the initrd and point the root to the UUID of the fedora-sd) but the boot stop just after (if I boot normally with the Fedora-sd on the USB adapter)
At this point i can only Ctrl-Alt-Canc.
The boot process stop in the same point if there is no sd on the slot. During boot I can see the sd so seem that the module are loaded but not allow to mount the fs. I add these module to the initramfs : mmc_core mmc_block sdhci sdhci-pci.
Boot fail symptoms: Stuck at Syslinux first boot line.Ctrl+alt+del can't work. need to shut down whole system by holding the power button for 3 secs.

Just installed 9.10 on a R3600. It booted fine, did apt-get upgrade, rebooted, still fine, activated nvidia drivers rebooted and now I just get a black screen.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install ubuntu netbook edition on my Acer aspire one D150. I have tried to do this before with version 9 with no luck so I waited until 10 to see if the problem goes away; apparently it has not. I put the ubuntu install files onto a USB stick according to the instructions from ubuntu here for windows (I have windows xp on the netbook now).
When I shut the PC down and turn it back on with the USB key inserted, the laptop just seems to hang at the ACER splashscreen. This screen is where I could press F2 for setup or F12 for boot order; the buttons do not respond, the USB key appears inactive. Again, it just seems to hang. I've waited for as long as letting it run all night to see if it goes anywhere by the morning with no luck.
I just upgraded my laptop to 10.10 and now when I boot the display doesn't show anything. This laptop worked flawlessly on 10.04. I can tell the underlying system is fine, because if I type my boot password the hard disk activity picks up like it is continuing to boot, and CTRL+ALT+DEL reboots the computer as one would expect. When I boot using an old kernel (a leftover from 10.04 I think) via GRUB the system boots normally. What can I do about this? My laptop is an HP Elitebook 2730p. According to the specs it uses an Intel GMA 4500MHD for graphics. I am using the 64-bit version of Ubuntu.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my old laptop to Maverick, and something went wrong. The update process crashed near the end. I had to kill the window. Tried to do a dist-upgrade but nothing happened, so I rebooted. After the reboot, I got a black screen, showing "Disconnected from Plymouth", and a login prompt. But the keyboard is disabled, so I can't even log in. If I try the recovery mode, I get a menu with options to get to a command line, but the keyboard is still disabled (only Ctrl-Alt-Del works).I already had a similar error in Lucid: the black screen with the Plymouth error showed up, but after a few seconds X started anyway and everything went fine. Now I'm stuck.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSimilar problems to mine have popped up elsewhere, but none of the fixes seem to work (or I'm just too stupid). I tried to see what the people at Canonical and elsewhere came up with for Ubuntu 10.4 and, after the live USB checked out fine, I rather foolishly installed the OS on my Acer Aspire One D250 (1GB RAM), to run alongside Windows XP.
It booted up once, I think, and then no more. I believe the problem MIGHT be the Broadcom WiFi stuff, but I'm not sure. Anyway, booting Ubuntu leads to a blank screen with a blinking cursor... which doesn't appear to go away. Recovery mode worked once or twice (had to use ACPI=OFF at least once), then no more. It leads to the same thing: that perpetually blinking cursor.
What I would like is either a fix to get Ubuntu 10.4 launched, or some way to remove the OS and restore my netbook back to what it was. Unfortunately, the MBR fixes that are posted all over cyberspace are useless, as my hidden partition doesn't contain the rtmbr.bin file it needs to work (don't ask me why--I've already posted that question at the AAO user forum). So it seems a fix to launch Ubuntu is the only solution, so that I can at least set grub to launch Windows XP rather than Ubuntu.
I'm thinking of buying an Acer Aspire D250 loaded with Win7 and then adding a version of Ubuntu.
The netbook will come with the Acer recovery facility to reinstall Win7 from a recovery partition in the event of OS failure. This means that the MBR and subsequent loaders need to be preserved for this function to remain (I don't have a Win7 disc and don't want to have to buy one).
I'm happy with a basic Win/Linux dual boot setup but I'd value any comments/suggestions as to how to preserve the recovery function when I add Ubuntu.
Since upgrading my mythbuntu box from lucid to maverick my boot times have been much slower. Looking at dmesg I can see delays. Can anyone who knows more than me point me in the right direction to fix these?

I have F11 running on my Acer laptop and I'd like to install F13 on a newly created partition.I have downloaded the DVD install a couple of days ago and tried to boot it using different options, but always failed. Below my attempts:
1) first option (Install or upgrade): it took a looooong time (like 4 or 5 hours) to get to the Loading vmlinuz message; after a couple more hours it was still there (with 4 or 5 dots more) and I decided that enough was enough;
2) second option (basic video driver): I tried it with and without the nomodeset option and in both cases the Loading vmlinuz message was immediate, but couldn't get past it;
3) first option (Install or upgrade) with the nomodeset option: again the Loading vmlinuz message was immediate, it added up to 10 or 11 dots and then hung;
4) I also tried to boot the same DVD on another laptop (just to rule out media problems) and quickly reached the first install screen, so the DVD is ok I think.
Note that in ALL the above described attempts, when the boot process hang I see my HD led constantly on and also the DVD led flashing.
I used Unetbootin to install Ubuntu 9.10 i386 remix onto my USB flashdrive and my Aspire One says it doesn't recognize the operating system or it didn't find it on the flash drive or something. What happen?

I've been trying to upgrade from 9.04 UNR to 10.04 UNE on my Aspire One D150. Install goes basically OK, barring the occasional hiccup booting from USB. Actually booting into it from the SSD, though, fails. After POST, all I get is a blank screen with a blinking cursor.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was using Ubuntu 10.04 for the last 6 months, recently I have upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, it worked fine for around four days, Now the problem is When I power up the system using power button, the system do not power up, I tried to boot from cd both Ubuntu and Windows XP, none works, I tried to go to BIOS setup using F2 and F12 (Acer Aspire 5920 model laptop), but i could not, just a blank display appears, here are some symptoms:
1. When powered on - LED indicating pocressor operation glows for a moment and disappears, few other LEDS indicating batter, music play, forward,stop LEDs glows as as usual,
2. Only blank screen appears
3. tried to switch on the wifi and bluetooth buttons, both did not glow indicating it is not working.
4. Paculiar thing is this symptons appears first time, suddenly all stop glowing and after 2 to 3 seconds again the system comes to this state and remains forever.
Questions:
1. Is it possible to be hardware problem?
2. If it a software problem the suspect can be Ubuntu 10.10 version?
I recently installed openSuSE 11.2 on an Acer Aspire One, but when the installer try to start the new kernel with kexec it hang up, and if I reboot the system it hang up always, also says that the Acer BIOS is unknown.

I searched in many sites to find because my debian live charged on my usb pen doesn't boot in any manner, I read that the live debian still does not start on UEFI systems but I still BELIEVE that there is a method to boot it up and I found this: [URL].....
So my request to you for now is what are the boot parameters to set to the liveboot.nsh? because that configuration doesn't solve the problem, Debian wanted ACPI disabled so I modified the .nsh but still there's the black screen.
I don't know why, but when i first boot openSUSE at the morning in my Aspire it hangs over and over again. I don't know why is this, but the gecko appear, the white bar appear, and moves 1cm, and then, puff no more blinking from the hard drive. However, Yesterday I have downloaded the 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Desktop (32 Bit). I have made a Startup Disk using UBUNTU Startup Disk Creator for that .iso which I have downloaded yesterday. That is a USB Live Disk. But the sad news is its not being able to boot my PC. where my PC configuration is not so bad.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI swapped out the hard drive on my laptop for a bigger one and put Kubuntu 10.10 on it back in March. The one big complaint I have is that it has a ridiculously slow boot time in comparison to Ubuntu 10.04. I have since installed most of the Gnome Ubuntu desktop through the repos and switched from kdm to gdm but I still have this relatively long period of blank screen with cursor until it goes straight to the gdm. The plymouth boot screen won't show at all. Is there a relatively simple fix for this?
I should add that I am not interested in updating to Natty. I have a limited bandwith I can use and a lot of accumulated software through the repos that would require several gigabytes of reinstall.
I have an Acer Aspire One and I would like to boot from an SCHD card installed into the system Expansion port. It works fine when used in a USB stick. When I check the boot order the expansion port is not listed as an option. There is an option for doing a network expansion. Are there any bios updates that would read that port on startup?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI currently have an Acer Aspire One netbook 120GB drive which came with Linpus lite preloaded. I have set-up dual boot a year or so ago. It now dual boots to either Linpus or Vista (yes I know!) via the Linpus grub.conf ( I got the instructions I think from here: [URL] I want to get the latest Ubuntu 11.04 build on this as a third boot option. If this work OK I may ditch the Linpus or Vista build at some point. So I've used Gparted on a USB drive to setup up three extended Logical Partitions (sda5, 6 and 7).
I then loaded Ubuntu s/w via an external drive with
/boot on 100MB /sda5
Swap on 1GB /sda6
/ on the 40GB+ /sda7
When I was asked for the bootloader location in the Ubuntu install gui I chose /sda5 (out of complete ignorance) All fine at this point. What do I have to get the linpus lite /boot/grub/grub.conf to see and start ubuntu?? Or is there something else I need to do?? Also, how does Ubuntu know which swap partition to use, as there is already one for the linpus lite install.
I installed Ubuntu a while ago, but sometimes (about half the time), when I boot my computer, go into the Grub bootloader, then whether Grub selects Ubuntu for me (not sure if this is an error as well, but I've found that if I leave it without pressing any keys, then Grub just boots into Ubuntu for me (also, it's the top option)) or I select Ubuntu, it then flashes a cursor (a '_' character) on the screen (it's also in the same font as the font used by BIOS, so I assume at this moment, it's in BIOS).
Next, one of two things happen. Either I have to wait a few seconds, then it boots into Ubuntu, OR, it just hangs like that, not booting into Ubuntu, and not responding to any key presses or anything, forcing me to power off my machine using the hardware button.My specs, generated from hardinfo, are:
