Debian Multimedia :: Can't Find Gtkrc Created By Gnome 2 Appearance Tool
May 8, 2015
I have created some new themes on my old squeeze machine using the gnome-appearance-properties tool. That program created a folder with the correct name in ~/.themes/. And it contains a single file (580 bytes) with the properties - theme (application/x-theme) which is unreadable. I need the gtkrc file for this theme but cannot find it anywhere! I searched /usr and /home and the entire file system. Where it might be hiding?

I'm using gnome shell 3.4.2.1 from the stable debian repository. 2 problems with the gnome-tweak-tool:
1) The extensions list is empty, even when the gnome-shell-extensions package is installed
2) in the non-classic mode only, setting made in the tool have no effect: e.g. Shell->Show date in clock does not toggle the date in the clock.

I really have no idea why this happened, but when I logged in GNOME the appearance is different. At first it looked like this:
[URL]
and now it turns into this:
[URL]
Notice how it's more square. System->Preferences->Appearances doesn't seem to help.

OS: jessie
KDE: 4.14.2
Kmail: 4.14.1
When I click on Appearance in Settings -> Configure KMail, KMail crashes. It does this every time I try.
I closed KMail and reopened it, it still crashed when I tried to get to appearance. I rebooted my system to see if that would work, it did not.

I've tried the bug-reporting tool in Gnome to no avail so far. This isn't a huge problem, more a cosmetic one. I'm running Squeeze beta 2, which was a fresh install. I have a Maxtor USB portable HD, which I use to back up personal data. It auto-mounts fine, as soon as I connect it. I have full read-write access from my regular user account; but when I'm finished accessing it, when I right-click and select "Safely remove" I get an error every time. The error has to do with "unable to unmount . . . ." and I wish I had the exact text but I don't. Anyway, when I open a terminal and check the mount point, the drive *has* unmounted, so I'm not worried about data loss. But why the error? BTW, the drive is formatted as one partition with NTFS.
I'm not looking for an answer so much as I am just trying to see that someone involved in trying to get Squeeze ready to release hears about this. It's no big deal, but it looks bad.

Installed Jessie and added the Nvidia Proprietary drivers. All looks good.
When I open the Gnome Tweak Tool it appears to be working fine but won't change anything. If I click on a check box the check appears for a split second and then disappears. Tried re-starting a few times, same. Haven't found anything relevant on the net yet.

I am looking for a way to be mailed a new file when it is created in a certain directory.I have found tools that will notify me when a file is created, such as iWatch with iNotify, but is there a way to actually be sent the new file when it is created. It is only a short text log file, but I would like to read it in my inbox rather than have to login and open the file each time an event is logged.

I dont know why but I cant open the appearance properties anymore. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.(Details: serial 693 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I tried out the 10.04 beta in VirtualBox, and the tab for Interface in Appearance Settings was gone. This tab allowed you to edit the appearance of Toolbars in Ubuntu. You could edit whether Icons showed up in the toolbar buttons and whether Text shows up beside it. This is kind of a minor annoyance for me; is there any way to edit this option outside of the appearance settings? I'm sure there is (like editing some config file or GConf), but I'm not sure where.

I have a problem with remote connection over SSH and Xming, Every time I connect to Linux host from Windows I have to run gnome-appearance-settings to restore scheme settings to the one set after directly loging to Ubuntu. Otherwise, all fonts sizes and colors are set in such a way that they are barely readable. Is there a way to save this configuration so I will not have to re-set it alays after login? Ubuntu version 10.10.

I am running a HP dc5750 dual core computer with a 512MB Nvidia 7200/7300 graphics card my operating system is Ubuntu 10.10. Both my processors are operating at 98-104% cpu usage, it appears that gnome-appearance-properties is the culprit and the only way to return to normal is to end these processes. I have been setting up the desktop cube to my liking and the processor appears to rise up to 100% again. Would getting a 1GB graphics card correct this or is this a bug in maverick meerkat. Any advice would be appreciated. Please keep it simply as I am a Newbie to Linux and find things over-whelming at times. Also would running at 100% on both processors at indefinite periods of time harm my computer.

The searchfunction in Gnome 3 does not find the files in my DropBox. When searching it does find the DropBox folder, but not the files contained in them.
Dropbox folder is placed in /home/myusr/
All other subcontent folders in the home directory does show up in gnome search,
Went through Google and DuckDuckGo but was unble to find out how to manually change the places that the searchfunction indexes.

With the find command it is easy to find files that have been modified or accessed within a given period. When a file is created, the acesss time is the same as the modify time. But as soon it is accessed (read), the access time changes, but the modify time does not. I need to find files that been accessed at all, ie. files which have access time newer than modify time. How do I do that?

I have the bug with the nvidia drivers breaking the theme in 10.10. Solved it as described here: I had the same problem with GTK theme: for some reason it defaults to "Raleigh" (instead of "Ambiance") with nvidia drivers. I fixed it by adding the following in my .gtkrc-2.0 :
Code:
include "/usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"
And if you want proper icons with it then also add:
Code:
gtk-icon-theme-name = "ubuntu-mono-dark"
Now I have the beautiful theme back for my own user account, but the font is wrong. How do I set the font to the Maverick default (and BTW, how is this font called?)? And where can I learn more about the syntax of the .gtkrc-2.0 file?

How to find and list files and directories present the current directory which were created in, say, years 2005, 2006, and 2009 and then move them to some other location, for example, /backup. Yes, I need to list them and move simultaneously. We can use:
Code:
find . -mtime n {};
but that n is troublesome for me to figure out files/directories created in years 2005, 2006, and 2009, for instance. Is there any way to match exactly by Year Value rather than calulating the "n" (days * 24 Hours)?
System Info:
SunOS 5.8 Generic_117350-06 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-Enterprise

I use a dark theme in gnome, which of course doesn't display correctly on many websites that force a white background onto text input dialogues (I have to type white or light gray on white) - Because of this, I never use a dark theme for more than a few days before I switch back to light, which really sucks - My workaround for this was going to be changing my Firefox launcher so that a custom GTKRC is used.
It works for all applications except for Firefox.
e.g. if I type into a Terminal:
Code:
env GTK2_RC_FILES="/usr/share/themes/Redmond/gtk-2.0/gtkrc" speedcrunch
or
Code:
bash -c 'GTK2_RC_FILES=/usr/share/themes/Redmond/gtk-2.0/gtkrc speedcrunch'
[Code].....

I did a bunch of updates, in sid, no issues. But when I rebooted the next day the log in had chanded. No problems logging in, the appearance had changed, and you now have to use the mouse to click on your name to open the password box, where before you could hit enter and get the same results. It is not much, but I have been trying to to restore it back with out much luck. I've played with gdm and gdm3 and a couple of other things but no luck. I did see a update for log in but have not been able to figure out the next step.
