Ubuntu :: Keyboard Won't Work In "Debian Package Search"?
Jan 13, 2011
So, I downloaded Debian Package Search. I search for an application. Right click on the name of the application, click Install/Update Package,nd it throws me this terminal window that asks: "Please enter root password". Now I'm sure that's my user password, but when I try to enter it.. nothing. My keyboard doesn't work. In the normal terminal window it works perfectly, but there I get nothing. Just wondered if anyone experienced the same problem, and the workaround.

I want to find some interesting games but the complete list looks a bit daunting. I can search the web for this information but what would be even better is if I could search a category in order of popularity. Is there a way to do this? Categories can be found here: [URL]
If not, is there a way I can find a list of packages in textlist format (like here: [URL]) for each category (rather than a complete list)?

At first I thought it might be a free software thing but I went on the debian package search site and stable, sid, and experimental all have packages for wine. Why is there none for wheezy? Is it a temporary dependency thing or...? I've googled this but there has been no kind of answer anywhere. Right now I'm using the frickelplatz apotsid repository as they package the most recent version of wine but if I could use a standard debian repository I would.

Is there anyway to show package size that comes up in the search so you don't have to apt-get install package individually and wait for the installation initiation and then reject to install after it gives u the [y/N] confirmation thing?

I cant log in as user. My keyboard doesn't work, not even ctrl+f1. So i cant get dmesg....Only thing that is working is alt+print screen+REISUB.
When i booted in safe mode from grub i can log in but only if i enter my root password. And then do /etc/init.d/gdm start.
If i tray to continue straight to gdm in safe mode my keyboard is not working so i can`t log in.
Day before i notices`d that i cant log in with ctrl+f1. When i tray i get this masage madone-desktop login: madone /bin/sh : cant open madone

I got Sun Type 5 Unix keyboard which uses mindin-8 connector, attached to a PC through a special adapter which converts it to USB. The keyboard's distinctive features are Control key in the middle row (swapped with Caps Lock which makes it a Unix layout - much more comfortable for the pinky) plus a whole bunch of extra Sun keys, including such useful ones as "Copy", "Paste", and volume control. (Sun Type 5 keyboard has very good feeling to its keys, much better than Type 7 one). Those extra keys work as expected with this adapter in Gnome on OpenIndiana (OpenSolaris previously), but aren't supported out of the box on Debian. Looking around I didn't find any good up to date tutorial how to enable them on Debian or any other Linux. Did anyone try to do it?

I ran the command in my terminal:
Code:
$setxkbmap dvorak
And everything is fine. But when I go back to the US keyboard by typing:
Code:
$setxkbmap us
I cannot do Alt+left Arrow to go back in Nautilus or in Iceweasel. Alt+home (in Iceweasel) does not work.
Why won't they work anymore? They only work with the dvorak keybindings.

I had composed about 4 meticulous paragraphs and when I went to submit it all, the forum had logged me out and all the entire post got blown away. Don't have the time to do it again. Hope the abbreviated version makes sense.
Trying to write scripts to change keyboards on the fly (my wife is a luddite and either I automate it or she won't use the machine.)
Wrote a file named "ChangeKeyboardToUS" which reads
#!/bin/bash
# Change keyboard layout to standard US
chmod 755 setxkbmap us intl
All that syntax is as per [URL] ....
I put that file into my local bin (home/bj/bin) and in terminal add that to my path with the command:
export PATH=$PATH:/home/bj/bin.
When I run the script in a terminal (by typing "ChangeKeyboardToUS" I get "Permission Denied". Even running it as su, still get the same response.

I just installed Debian Testing (with Xfce) along side Win7 on my Dell XPS M1530 and now neither my keyboard nor my USB-mouse work at the login screen. Both worked perfectly during the installation and Grub as well recognizes my keyboard. The Numlock-LED can be switched on and off during the boot, but fails to work at the login screen.

I want to use the Control + windows key on my keyboard to do a killall firefox-bin. What I've done so far is gone in to gconf-editor, and under apps->metacity->keybinding_commands I made command 1 as killall firefox-bin and under global_keybindings, run_command_1 I have <Control><Super_L> . What am I doing wrong?

I'm running Debian 8.1 KDE on a 2007 dv6 laptop. Model number is worn off. lol but the specs:
Intel i3 first gen m 330
4GB RAM
Intel (ironlake) graphics
First off, closing the lid to my laptop doesn't trigger suspend, or anything no matter what I set it to in power options.
I can suspend using "systemctl" or suspend from the "Leave" menu, but upon turning my computer back on, my touchpad and keyboard don't work.
Sometimes, my touchpad will start working after about 15 seconds, but the keyboard doesn't come back. I have to hard reset.
I have a feeling it's something to do with systemd, but I'm not super proficient in linux. Just an end user who is friendly with a terminal.

I have a Nortek Diva keyboard and my machine runs Mandriva. In Mandriva 2009, pressing the "magnifying glass" button on my keyboard took me straight to the Firefox Search bar. Fantastic! Now that I've upgraded to Mandriva 2010, however, pressing the same button just launches the search engine as a new tab (okay, I can live with that), but the cursor is not active in the Search field.
I've been to the Nortek site but there are no drivers for the keyboard, Linux or otherwise. And no Nortek keyboard configurations appear in the Mandriva Linux Control Centre. I know how to use xev to capture keystrokes. What I'd like to know is, how can I map the keyboard button to position a cursor in the Firefox Search bar? I use Search A LOT, so this is really slowing me down. I bet it's something like "firefox %search".

Note: I have made a thread similar to this before, but the title/contents were too botched to repair.I know that using C-r you can search for past bash commands containing a particular string, but how would you search for past bash commands matching a particular regular expressionIs there a keyboard shortcut for that or do you have to use a shell command?

I've got Debian Sid x64 on my machine. Problem is that in my KDE setup several programs don't work, namely System Load Viewer plasmoid, plasmoid with temperature info and update-notifier-kde. System Load Viewer always shows 0% RAM and swap usage, as well as no processors, temperature sensors plasmoid shows no sensors available even after I installed lm-sensors and run sensors-detect, update-notifier-kde doesn't show any notifications even if I run aptitude update manualy. I might be mistaken but it seems to me that these three programs are not working because of some common reason, most likely some policy package either missing or misconfigured, but I can't figure out what is it.

I'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.
Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.
I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).

I have a few thousand .doc and .odt files (Word & OpenOffice documents) in a folder. Under 9.04, I was able to run a query search for keywords by using; Places - search for files - contains the text. It would find files with the text that I requested every time.
Now that I have 9.10, that search function does not work any more.

I just upgraded my computer to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. Whenever I open Synaptic Package Manager it opens normally. If I type into the "Quick search" box, when I try to type in a word as soon as I type the second letter Synaptic immediately closes. However, if I click on the full "Search" button, this function works as it should. I just can't use Quick Search. Synaptic closes every time.
I uninstalled synaptic from a terminal by typing [CODE] apt-get remove synaptic. Then I reinstalled using [CODE] apt-get install synaptic. Reinstalling did not fix the problem. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Does anybody have strigi krunner plugin work as search-engine and not as lottery? Same goes with search desktop containment - when typing in few letters from the file name, it never founds the file, only displaying ca 10 random files based on content(i guess) instead.

My trusty 11.04 x64 Ubuntu desktop machine stopped booting up properly about 2 weeks ago - it goes through Grub and into Plymouth, but then freezes and stops responding to keyboard input either on a dark purple screen, or less often the same but with the Ubuntu logo and the 5 boot progress circles but with none of them lit up. I can hit escape early on after grub and see initialisation reports showing everything successful (other than a fail on "Automatic crash report generation") - up to a line saying "Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [OK]", at which point it freezes.
Going into recovery mode allows me to fsck the disk (which is fine, and smartctl reports all attributes as fine), fix packages (which I have done a number of times, to no avail) and boot into safe graphical mode, which works fine, albeit only on one monitor and with very poor graphics performance, obviously. As the machine was borked and everything was backed up on my fileserver anyway, I decided to nuke it and give Fedora a go (I've been using Ubuntu since Feisty and it was a good time to try something else). Fedora was fine (and worked with the default nouveau driver), but I didn't like it, so after less than 24 hours away from the fold I decided to come back to Ubuntu.
At least a reinstall should fix the problem with booting, right? Wrong! The live CD worked fine, installed perfectly, and the machine behaved itself upon first reboot - at which point I ran apt-get dist-upgrade, restarted, and blam - right back where I started. Updated vanilla Ubuntu 11.04 will not boot. Has Ubuntu released a dodgy package that has broken my x server? I don't want to have to go back to 10.10 -

i guess this is an installation issue as i am newish to Linux and got a F14 laptop from a used/refurb store... Anyway it seem i have difficulty with getting GTK running or maybe it is WGET...?
i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...
All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.
