Ubuntu :: Keyboard Delayed Typing When Xserver Starts
May 29, 2010
My keyboard was working fine then all of a sudden it started acting up. Now when I boot into linux the keyboard works fine till I start the Xsever. At first I thought that the keyboard stopped working so I restarted it and still had the same problem. I ended up restarting it 8 times then I finally started to hit the keyboard now when I was done hitting it I kinda kept my hand on it and noticed it still types but I have to hold it for a long period of time for it to start typing. I have to hold the button for like 1-2 Sec for it to type one letter. Then I checked the keyboard setting and they were fine.

I have openSUSE 11.3 on my Lenovo Thinkpad X61. It has been running fine for many months, but yesterdaychanged. For example, between the two previous words I had actually typed "something" ("yesterday something changed") but it was lost. I type at normal speed but the machine cannot keep up. Hopelessly annoying. This happens in every application I have checked. The only unusual thing I did yesterday was to load a bunch of photos off a relative's digital camera. I'm concerned I may have picked up spyware.

During startup (suse linux old distro) LILO immediately after stratup procedure I can see login for about 1 sec and then Xserver starts. I'm unable to kill it with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace or Ctrl+F1..So the question is: is there any way I can force linux to boot into console mode before it starts xserver? (I'm unable to modify any files since I cannot reach the consol mode)? Is there any shortcut ky I need to press during boot in order to prevent GUI from starting?

My keyboard on my laptop has died but I'm on a working vacation, so in the meantime I really need to use my laptop. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to activate the on screen keyboard (onBoard) without typing, except at the log-in screen. There must be some sequence of mouse clicks to get there, otherwise that was a serious design flaw. The other posts I found here explained how to do it but only with typing involved.)

I have a wireless keyboard and for some reason it is typing random letters, symbols, and numbers while I am not even touching the keyboard. I tried a different wireless keyboard and that worked for awhile, but even that started to do the same thing. I plugged in a cord keyboard and that has been working fine, but I am unable to type my password if it goes into sleep mode or select my windows partition. It's very confusing and I plan on reinstalling both windows and linux anyways it's that time, but I have to figure this problem out before I do.

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 on a DELL Latitude E6510 (bios A07). I am experiencing an annoying problem: It has this weird keyboard issue where whenever I am typing in an application, the cursor will jump up and over a few lines. The problem also happened under Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 and under bios A03.

The keyboard is acting strange ever since having to reinstall the gnome desktop, and sound alsa and pulseaudio. The lastest kernel update was what started the whole mess. What is happening is as I type about every 4 or so letter, the pc speaker beeps, and the status leds for caps lock, num lock and the third status leds turn on at random. When I hold down a key and have auto repeat kick in then for each character typed, there is an associated beep. I checked the keyboard setting in user preferences and there is a setting to enable beep on type, but it's not enabled, nor does changing the setting cause a change. I'm pretty sure it's just gnome related, as it doesn't occur in kde, but I can't be 100 % at this point.

I recently built my first computer which has Debian Jessie running on it.
Everything was running great until I updated the computer a few days ago. After doing that and turning it on a few hours later, the keyboard started missing letters (as in it wouldn't register every key click) and was also typing some letters over and over again. It seems that it doesn't matter what key I press, the same problem occurs.
I tried using the keyboard on my laptop; it worked perfectly. I also tried connecting up another keyboard I had laying around and that seemed to have the same issue. Both keyboards are mechanical.

I've just installed Debian Testing XFCE, and mouse & keyboard don't respond to any inputs. The keyboard works just fine in the Recovery Shell, that's why I suspect a problem with the XServer.

I was looking into installing Gnome for Slackware 13.1 due to the instability of KDE and I was able to find GSB [URL]. I ran the simple installation: Code: lynx --source [URL] Everything downloaded and installed so I logged off, ran xwmconfig and set it to gnome and then tried starting my xserver and my screen turns black with a single white dash in the corner. My keyboard doesn't respond (the lock lights won't turn on) and I'm stuck on this black page. I tried changing xwmconfig back to KDE and the same thing happens

I am trying to write a script (especially C-shell) to execute a fortran code that reads in parameters from keyboard typing. I will have to process this .F code for many times with the parameters the same for all my data files, therefore, I don't have to type in everytime I execute the .F code. But I don't know what is the command in c shell to read in a text files that contains all the parameters I want and can make the shell read in appropriately to feed the .F code.

I recently upgraded my Dell Vostro V13 from 9.04 to 10.04. All seemed to go well, but now the keyboard (and touchpad) aren't being recognized on bootup. I can get to single user mode OK --- keyboard is fine, but something is badly amiss as I can't use the mouse or keyboard when the X-server starts.

When I load XP in VirtualBox it starts off with the keyboard working. However, if I leave my computer for 10mins the Ubuntu computer/screensaver lock comes in. When I then go back to my VirtualBox I cannot select the CTRL-right to activate the keyboard. The mouse still works correctly but I cannot type anything.

I randomly started up my laptop one day and the mouse and keyboard stopped responding once GDM's login screen came up. Everything works fine from the console, but even if I run startx from the login shell the mouse and keyboard do not work, even though everything else in GNOME runs perfectly.
I am using an HP dv6426us laptop running Ubuntu 9.04 (i686 architecture with the 2.6.28-15-generic kernel). Below is a copy of my xorg.conf file, just in case there might be something wrong with that. I will try and put more information on, but seeing as I have to use a different computer to post this thread, copying over log files and stuff is difficult for the moment (though I am going to try and copy them over to a flash drive).
Code:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"

way to hibernate at a specific time or after a some minutes (like 40 minutes to an hour, guess the exact time doesnt matter anyway). normally i shutdown my comp at night with
Code:
sudo shutdown - P HH:MM
which works just fine, but sometimes i have like 4 workspaces of stuff open that i'm working on so i'd rather just hibernate. shutdown -H does this halt thing that is really not my cup of tea so from the aformentioned googling i found out about at and sleep and crontab etc. but at and sleep cant recieve my sudo password beforehand so its useless and crontab is for repetitive scheduling, which i'd like to avoid cause i would hate to be working and suddenly have my forgotten crontab script hibernate me.
so is there any way to do a delayed hibernation? or at least some way to provide the sudo password to an at or sleep prefixed command, beforehand?
i'm only interested in doing it straight up through the terminal, not through other 3rd party software cause i tried a few of those before i found out about shutdown and they didnt work very well.

I have a script running at the moment via cron which takes a picture every minute from my webcam. gst-launch-0.10 v4l2src num-buffers=1 ! jpegenc quality=95 ! filesink location=/home/user/$picture.jpg However, the camera is only on for one second and takes the picture which leads to very dark images as the light sensor hasn't had a chance to work yet. However, if I load up Cheese, it brightens after about 10 seconds of the camera being on. Is there anyway of adding in a delay to the pipeline above so the camera stays on for 10 seconds before actually saving the file to a jpg?

Something that has been bugging me. I'm not sure about where it should be so I put it here.
When I loaded up a flash game, the music/sound would be delayed. It's nothing with the performance of my PC because it's still fast.

is there a way to configure shutdown on critically low battery to give me a bit of time before actually shutting down?I've set Gnome to shutdown on low battery. Problem is, I don't get any notification about battery running low, and as soon as battery level reaches the critical threshold, the system starts shutdown without me having any possibility to quickly complete some tasks. Of course, I'd increase battery level thresholds accordingly.

When I reboot, USB keyboard acts just fine for GRUB. Once SUSE begins to boot, I lose the keyboard (numlock light goes off too). Cannot press ESC to watch the boot sequence. Then, at login, there is no mouse or keyboard for about 60 seconds. Then suddenly, they both become active. Why did this start happening?
It has been about a week since my last reboot, so there's been a few config changes and patches, so it's going to be hard to narrow down a culprit. Thought USB configs in /etc/fstab was the problem, but still happening after rolling back changes to a known good config. Re-ran SaX2. Mouse and keyboard look good in the config file. Also, have otherwise healthy USB behavior with thumb drives and in VirtualBox machines. It just acts goofy at boot time.

I'm having a problem with TCP connections taking a long time to establish, often timing out. The strange thing is it seems to only happen on some source workstations and not others in our LAN but not from home or other internet connections.I can see the SYN packet leave the source workstation, enter the firewall LAN interface, leave the firewall WAN interface and arrive at the destination server's interface. Then the SYN ACK packet doesn't get sent for 2 to 300 seconds. Once I see the SYN ACK sent from the server, the connection is ESTABLISHED.

I have been running Senmail on SuSE 11.1 for the last few years with no problems.Since installing SuSE 11.3 a few months ago I have been having problems getting Sendmail to send to some (only a few) servers. If I disable the firewall # SuSEFirewall2 stop.I can send successfully using # sendmail -v -q, or # sendmail -v -qIxxxxx.When I re-enable the firewall I will start to get the timeouts/temporarily unavailable messages again (but as mentioned above, only for some servers) even though I can successfully telnet these servers when the firewall is on. When I disable the firewall the delayed messages can again be sent.Has anybody any ideas what I need to change (presumably in the Firewall) to get things working correctly? 'SMTP with sendmail' is already selected under 'Services to Allow' under YaST Firewall->Allowed Services..

Sometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection. It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.
