Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 - NFS Functionality For Home Filesystem

May 30, 2010

I installed the NFS functionality into Ubuntu 10.04, hoping to have a home file system. However, mounting it seems to be a challenge. When I mount on the server its self, it works fine. But on other computers. Such as my windows 7 machine, the connection times out. It seems to make the inital connect, then none after that. (The windows 7 machine does have the NFS files installed).

Ubuntu Servers :: Filesystem To Use When Creating A Home Server / Nas?

Oct 21, 2010

What is the recommended filesystem to use when creating a home server/nas?

I'd be sharing files using SAMBA, DLNA Server or some sort of streaming. I'll have two win7 laptops, 2 ubuntu desktops and ps3 accessing the files. Most of the time the server will just 75% read from 25% writing.

Would ext4 be an ideal?

Ubuntu Networking :: Accessing Server With Built In VPN Functionality?

Aug 10, 2010

I've seen many posts about setting up VPN's but my doubt goes further. I just need access to the local network of my office from a Windows XP (which of course is outside the LAN). I would like this PC to have access to the whole LAN, but what I really need is it to access to an Ubuntu Server (e.g. 192.168.0.10). The router is a Netgear DG834, which has a built in VPN functionality. So, is it enough if I set it up? Do I need to install any VPN server in Ubuntu? What if I want to access to another computer in the LAN? Where should I start?

Fedora :: Disk Missing In /home Filesystem?

This was 'df -h /home' straight after a fresh install. It says it's 357G in size, but even though 272M is in use, it's telling me I have only 339G left available. Where did that extra 18G go?

Applications :: Best Distributed Filesystem For Home Directories?

Oct 19, 2010

I'm looking for the best distributed filesystem to share my home directory among all my computers, and I'm interested in what advice I could get here.

Here are my requirements:
1) It must be completely POSIX compliant, because I've noticed that many programs will break if not.
1a) Must support file locking (i.e. flock()) preferably sharing lock advisories between the clients
1b) Must support hard links, and be able to recognize a hard link connection by looking at the number of references
2) It must have encryption, and security suitable for it to be exposed to the internet.
2a) I would like to use password-less authentication. Preferably SSL client certs (HTTPS style). Static keys (SSH style) are also fine. I would begrudgingly accept a password authenticated system if it used a fairly secure challenge/response algorithm if it met all of my other requirements. (Extra points if it supports PKCS#11 and thus supports smart cards)
2b) Encrypted traffic must be an option.
2c) No thanks to kerberos. It was too annoying to maintain when I tried it before and I don't like passwords.
3) Preferably, it should be stable and fairly easy to maintain.
4) Optionally, it should be tolerant of network drops, and reconnect automatically as needed, because my laptop wireless is a little flaky sometimes.

General :: How To Mount Remote Filesystem For / Home Directory

Oct 17, 2010

have a Debian server which I use to hold my home directory for my user account. I used to use Windows 7 and connect to my /home/username directory via Samba which worked great. I could access all of my files as if they were sitting on my local PC, but they were actually sitting on my Debian server.

Now I have decided to give Ubuntu 10.10 a try (looks promising so far!).One thing I'm not sure how to do is to mount my home directory from my server! I am able to open an sftp connection to my server, but not able to access them natively as they were /home/username on my local machine.I'm assuming I need to mount my home directory somewhere in my fstab before it starts up, but which protocol should I use? I'm used to using windows networking, but am trying to get more into linux.Should I use NFS?

CentOS 5 :: Use Multiple Filesystem Types ( Like / Ext3 And /var & Home Xfs)?

Nov 30, 2010

I am going to install CentOS 5 on my pc , for3d modeling , and i have some doubts about partitioning the system.

I know that i can have /, /var , /tmp , /home and other directories as individual partitions. I know that i can use ext3 , or xfs ( i know that anaconda doesn't let to use xfs, but i know a way of migrate partitions to xfs after installing) or ext4 , and others , without problems.

But i could for example, once installed all with ext3 , have for example / on ext3 , and /var and /home on xfs.

For me it would be very interesting have /home in a another partition and as xfs (migrating it later from ext3) as mostly i will save in /home a lot of big files ,images, dvd isos, renders , binary maya files and like, and i see a advantage of use xfs with /home.

But a lot of people also use xfs for / as well , but as / has a lot of small files , perhaps use xfs on /var and some other directories, could be good (because xfs performance deleting files or other features), and leave / as ext3 for example.

So is it possible to have different filesystem type for some directories under / ,(for example /var and /home as xfs, the rest as ext3 in / ) , without having any problem ?

(not counting using xfs for a directory that won't see improved his performance because has a lot of static small files or like)

Networking :: Wireless Drivers/functionality Suddenly Disappeared - Kubuntu 9.1 HP TX1000 Laptop

Apr 18, 2010

I switched my girlfriend laptop from windows 7 to Kubuntu 9.4, then upgraded to karmic koala. I was able to, through the hardware manager, install a software modem driver, and a firmware unwrapper driver for her broadcom 4.X series wireless adapter. Whenever I attempted to install the broadcom 4.1, 4.2. ect driver itself a package update would fail, but wireless functionality still worked nonetheless. My girlfriend has a TX1000 HP laptop, similar to this one:[URL]..Product number in the bios is GA648UA#ABA System Board ID is 30BF

The wireless drivers she needs are proprietary. This worked for a while, although seemingly at random her wireless would go out, and her analog sound driver for her Nvidia chipsets would too. Usually logging out of the KDE environment and back in fixed the issue. Now wireless is completely gone; using a hard ethernet core to the router still works. Even connected to the internet, the proprietary drivers that used to be available in the hardware manager aren't there anymore. Right before the driver disappeared, I updated the system with all the latest round of updates, and installed the base package and some plugins for VLC. I don't know how to role back packages to see if an update killed the wireless, I uninstalled the VLC software but that didn't help.

Wireless is checked enabled on my taskbar, and I have checked my bios and haven't found any setting to disable the wireless adapter. Anything networking related has been enabled. At this point I am rather frustrated with the stability of Kubuntu overall and would prefer a hard solution that will permanently fix the problem.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Filesystem Check After Power Outage - WARNING: "Running E2fsck On A Mounted Filesystem May Cause SEVERE Filesystem Damage"

May 18, 2011

I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:

*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..

*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message

*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)

Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.

Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?

Fedora :: Home Partition And Create Logical Volume Out Of 53 Gb Filesystem Partition?

Aug 24, 2010

I installed fedora 13 64 bit and it works great but I encountered several issues when setting up guest OS with KVM. The problem seems to be related to selinux. But let me first ask question about logical volume. By Default fedora created logical volumes:

[Code].....

"If you expect that you or other users will store data on the system, create a separate partition for the /home directory within a volume group. With a separate /home partition, you may upgrade or reinstall Fedora without erasing user data files." seems to suggest I have to create a separate physical partition and assign that to /home. But reading elsewhere it seems to suggest logical volume acts like a partition. My goal is to make it easy in case fedora is hosed and I have to re-install it without affecting /home where my cirtical data resides. Given above do I need to create a separate physical partition or I am just fine?

I have a second hard disk that originally had windows and all my data. Windows is hosed but I can see my data from within Fedora and Windows is gone and I created created new partition in its place which used ot be the C:/ drive appears as 53 Gb filesystem. My data which was originally D drive appears as 215 GB filesystem. As given in [URL] I want to create a new logical volume in 53 Gb filesystem which I want to use as space for virtual disk to install guest OS's in KVM. Currrently 53 GB filesystem is mounted as /media/3467BH89JK789 but this does not work well with KVM. how do I create this logical volume out of 53 Gb filesystem partition and add proper selinux info and do I add to vg_vostrolx volume group and in a different volume group?

Ubuntu :: Finding Filesystem Type/repair Broken Filesystem?

Jul 9, 2010

I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.

First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.

Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.

General :: External Drive Read Only - WARNING! Running E2fsck On A Mounted Filesystem May Cause SEVERE Filesystem Damage

Mar 24, 2010

I've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage.

Ubuntu :: Functionality Lost With 10.04 LTS?

May 7, 2011

I finally upgraded my desktop from 9.10 to 10.04. I do not feel that this was a step forward; a lot of little things just don't work. For example, when shutting down with 9.10, it automatically shuts down in 60 seconds. With 10.04, it waits *forever* for a 2nd mouse click.

The USB drive - there used to be an option to un-mount it without removing it. That's gone now, and I'm guessing that I will find more of these as the days go on. And all the colors have been removed from the panel applets. Not really a functionality issue, but it is a negative to the user experience.

So my question is: How can I restore these features? Is there a configuration somewhere I can edit?

Debian :: Different Functionality In Aptitude And Apt-get?

Aug 19, 2011

From what I understand aptitude and apt-get are both valid package management tools and it should not matter which one you use (of course the user interface is different, but the basic functionality is the same). I found something which makes me believe there are differences: I ran aptitude install gnome-themes-more and it did nothing because the package was already installed. Then I ran apt-get install gnome-themes-more just to see the difference, and it also did not install anything, but it marked the package as manually installed.

The I ran again apt-get install gnome-themes-more and this time the package was not marked as manually install (obviously because it's already marked). This makes me believe that aptitude did not mark my package as manually installed (I would have pasted the command output as well, but I don't have it anymore). So, is the core functionality of those tools the same or not?

I used until now apt-get and wonder if I should have used aptitude. I have found some wikis which recommend the usage of aptitude but I could not find out if this reccomendation is based only on the UI improvements or are there also improvements in the core functionality. I'd like some hints from more seasoned debianers about which one to use, or whether it matters. I'm maily using command line, so user interface is not an issue,
