Ubuntu :: Keep Running Total Of Data Up/downloaded?
Apr 1, 2010
Sometimes I connect to the internet via a "wired" connection (interface usb0), sometimes via a dial-up connection (ppp0).
Stupid annoying arbitrary data transfer limits imposed by ISP make me want to keep a running total of data uploaded and downloaded, so I can keep an eye on this and hopefully avoid using up my allowance. program that will keep this running total for me, across all interfaces? Or maybe someone has a script that can do this?

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 on a computer with 2GB RAM. It seems that it never uses more than about 20-25% of the total RAM even if I have several applications running.
The question is - do I really need to have a swap partition if it is not being used?

I need applet which shows the total data usage (In+out) (of the current session or since the uptime) on the panel.I searched a lot, but everytime I had to click somewhere to see my data usage. I don't want that. I want my data usage displayed regularly on the panel.

I use a Karmic Koala and I want to upgrade to Lucid Lynx. All the packages are up to date. So if I upgrade online, how much data download am I looking at? I have a sufficiently fast connection, but I have a limit on the data that I can download. Is it less than downloading a Lucid Lynx CD? Can I get an exact figure somehow?

my isp is putting a max bandwidth in my area and I need to monitor my downloads and uploads per month. Is there anything that has a gui that is easy to set up and just shows the amount of data downloaded and uploaded per month. Also if possible to do a pop up if you set a maximum bandwidth amount.

At present I have to live with a 5Gb/month data volume limitation. Due to having to monitor this usage, I have been forced to use the software that came with the web dongle - and that means having to use Windows (spit!)
Can anyone recommend a Linux package I could download that readily shows how much data one has uploaded/downloaded over a set period?

As a long time Windows user, I am stuck on the basics of installing and running downloaded Linux applications. I've tried to read a few tutorials but am still baffled. I am using a Puppy based boot CD and, of course, the applications that come with the Puppy all work fine. It is when I try to add something new that I become lost. Example: I just downloaded a Linux version of the Firefox browser.
I click on the downloaded file in the Download Manager and kinda expect the thing to give me a executable set-up file, but just get a whole bunch of files. One available option is to "extract" them. I create a folder to extract them to and "extract". With Firefox I see nothing in that folder. With a few other applications, I see an extracted list of files but and try to find one file that will magically start and install or boot an application, but nothing ever happens. So, how does one download , extract, install, and then run a basic application? The references I have found on the Internet tend to be rather old or more complex that my brain can handle.

Basically they all cover running a 32bit app running on 64bit host and so on.I want to have an isolated system in total chroot (running lighttpd, mysql, ssh, etc from there).(For security reasons I have to isolate the dev from the live one.) So I installed the chroot environment, mounted all the neccessary things and chrooted in. Everything went fine. Edited /etc/ssh/sshd_config to use port 22222 instead of 22. Used service ssh start then. It says service running but if I try this: ssh -p 22222 localhost I get "Connection refused". The chrooted is system is very minimal so far so there is no firewall, hosts.allow/deny or anything.
ps.: The chroot environment will be a development area as I already mentioned. I thought chroot is the easiest way but if you say KVM is better or something I can go for it. The machine is easily capable of running even 10 VMs easily.

I'm looking for a powerful network traffic monitor that can do all of the following (or at least a combination of tools that can do the following):
Tell me how much data was downloaded/uploaded on an interface this month and the previous month tell me how the traffic was used throughout the monthshow which internal IPs (IPs in the 192.168.1.0/24 network) used how much traffic show which ports/protocols on those IPs used all that traffic
Hhow LIVE traffic flow statistics that can tell me total speed of traffic going through an interface as well asshow which internal IPs (IPs in the 192.168.1.0/24 network) are using how much of the traffic show which ports/protocols on those IPs are using that traffic
This tool will run on a linux router through which all my internal PCs are connected to the Internet. This means the tool(s) need to work with NAT (traffic being forwarded and not necessarily destined for the interfaced being monitored).
The distribution being run doesn't have a package manager so any packages or dependencies have to be manually compiled and SCPed over file by file. For this reason, the tool/tools need to be simple (things like vnstat, not things like ntop that have their own web interface).
I know that vnstat can tell me the first bullet point so it's only there incase there's a tool out there that can do everything. If there's a tool that can only do the second or third bullet point, that's great too - I'll just keep using vnstat and look for something else to do the other task.

after the netinst finished to download the last package, one hour later the process never continues, I checked the log file and I didn't find anything suspecious, also dmesg and nothing, in fact, in the log file before checked I found that the last line was registered just a minute ago - DHCP renew IP-, so my questions are:
1. all the packages downloaded are gone?, can I restart the installation using all those packages downloaded?
2. where I can find the error or problem that cause that the installation was freezed?
3. in the case that installation needs to start from the beginning, can I use the package downloaded?

There is text based game in the Ubuntu repos called gomoku (just 5 in a row) it comes with the package bsdgames. The manual page [URL] lists an option (-b) to run it in the background. I want to try that and if I know how it works create a simple graphical front-end. When I start the program with:
Code:
gomoku -b
it starts and remains active, the terminal does not return to prompt which is OK as the command is not finished. The manual says the program reads from stdin, and this might sound stupid but how to get anything there?
I've tried to pipe an echo command to gomoku which works but ends the program after is receives input.
Code:
echo "black" | gomoku -b
just finishes. After that when you type another command like:
Code:
echo "justsometext" | gomoku -b
gomoku tells it expects either black or white as input. So it forgot the previous "black" because it is a new instance.
How do I pass text to an already running gomoku?

I'm about to have a web server at home for the first time. I've always missed having full control and not having to contact my hosting company when I need to do some specific changes - and some changes they won't do for you at all.I've chosen the non-GUI Ubuntu Server with LAMP, and nothing more is installed really except for a couple of command line tools from the repository. The LAMP software has been locked down as good as I can by following some guides on the net and using common sense. Like Apache 2 don't have access to the file system except for the www folder, and setting the headers to Prod. MySQL has skip-networking and I've commented out the listen string to localhost. PHP has a truckload of functions that I've disabled in the php.ini, also by following some guides on the net, among some other security enhancing php.ini editing.
The only thing the server will serve is a well known PHP forum and some html docs, and that's all. Nothing advanced or complicated stuff, and I'm definitely not programming PHP myself or letting anyone do it for me.But I do want to sleep well at night knowing that my server is always on and sitting on the edge of my home network! And can I do that? I've heard that you don't need to be worried about getting your Linux server box hacked, but you should be worried about anyone getting root access to it. But is it really that simple? Ubuntu is shipped without root account and you must have the sudo password, right? What's the odds for anyone to get full access to my system? An issue: I've heard that Apache never must run as root. When I do a ps -ef, I see that there are several www-data processes running apache, but there's one root process running apache too. Is this normal and is it safe?An issue: I've heard that PHP can fail pretty easily. But isn't PHP running under apache 2 and limited by the www-data filesystem access? An issue: MySQL is running as a MySQL user, and I guess that's an unprivileged user right?

Before the other day, I'd copied a live CD to ramdisk and run it from there before, but the disk was INX (INX is not X), a live CD based on Ubuntu that runs entirely in the text mode, no GUI. INX is a terrific product: colorful, educational, light, agile, fun to use, and and often damned useful, but when an OS only uses text, you may not notice how much running from the RAM speeds up an OS. Previously, I'd assumed that the best reason to run a Live CD from the RAM was to free up the CD ROM drive. When I started running a full KDE 3.5.10 Desktop from the RAM, it didn't take me long to notice the awesome boost in speed and performance.
The computer has the fastest access to the data that's in the RAM. (The "A" in "RAM" stands for "access", right?) So the machine is faster. As the RAM gets larger, I'm sure more and more live CDs are going to offer the RAMdisk option. Right now both INX and SLAX share the characteristic of being exceptionally small CDs, and that makes them well suited for this kind of application. The "minimal" version of Slax, the basic CD without any modules added, is less than 200 mbs, which fits very nicely on my 1024MB RAM. I now use the minimal SLAX cd to initiate the system, and I keep a collection of the modules on my hard drive to copy to the RAM and activate at will.
Here's a couple of screenshots: [URL] I'm using Wine here to run my one and only favorite Windows program, a text to speech program called READ PLEASE. Note that I am also running KTorrent, which is uploading from and downloading to my external MyBook hard drive. [URL]. Here's a shot of yakuake, which is sort of like Konsole with superpowers. I just upgraded my hard drive KDE system to 4.2.3, and they still haven't fixed Yakuake yet. I know it's been reported, so I'm sure it'll be taken care of.

I have a toshiba A135 laptop that has been running an old old version of Ubuntu, mainly because I didn't have it set up to receive automatic updates. I decided to upgrade it (to version 8.10), and in the middle of the upgrade, it froze. I had no choice but to reboot the computer. Once I did, it would no longer boot. I tried booting in recovery mode and "fix" the broken packages, and that didn't fix it. When I boot the computer it prompts me to enter my username and password, and then it sits at the blank pink screen forever and doesn't advance on into the desktop.
The next thing I tried was booting from an ubuntu 9.10 disk in hopes that once I was inside the computer, I could at least back up some files that I didn't want to loose on an external hard drive - especially if I was going to end up having to reinstall.
I am able to get to the alternative boot source screen and select boot from cd. Then I select "trial run of ubuntu 9.10 and it just sits at a black screen with the cursor flashing forever. Now I'm at a loss. I would like to be able to at the very least get into my computer and save some files to my external drive but I can't seem to able to do it.

I ran the upgrade from ubuntu 9.10 yesterday and it's now a mess. Is there something I can do to refloat this ship?
The file download stage seemed to be working OK: I was watching it when it only had three minutes left to go. I went away and came back a few minutes later and the screen had gone black. OK I thought, this must be all part of the plan, so I went away and came back over an hour later: still nothing. I decided, perhaps foolishly, to press the power button and boot it up.
Eek! Now I get the following errors:
mounting none on dev failed: no such device
chroot:cannot execute /etc/apparmor/initramfs: no such file or directory
Then the message Ubuntu 10.04 LTS cruncher tty1 and a login prompt. I can log in OK but don't know what to do next to recover the situation.
Rather alarmingly there is some activity on the system: lots of messages beginning with a number like [22.71309.

I have got a lap top (Compaq Mini 311), I tried to install Ubuntu 10.04, but after installing it I found only a black screen with a blinking whithe bar, and the keyboard does not work anymore.Looking across the net, I found this page , where is written that I have to install the previous version, do some operation and then upgrade it. Well, also with Ubuntu 9.10 and Ubuntu 9.04 I have got the same problem: total freezeing of the computer after the installation.
So, I tried to install ubuntu with wubi, as a virtual machine, but the problem is exactly the same.Somethimes, it may happen that Ubuntu loads, but it happens about in 1/50 cases.I installed it many times, everytime erasing the partition, but actually I have a boot menu with about 6 or 7 linux (not working), and windows, loading windows I can choose between win and ubuntu, if I choose ubuntu, I have 5 options: 4 are not-working-linux, and one of them is windows. If I choose windows, I come back to the previous menu: a loop on grub was done, but I don't know how.

I just installed the 32 bit version of Ubuntu 10.10 and though I like it an all, I'd like to put the 64 bit edition in in order to use all four gigs of RAM I have installed... To my knowledge, 32 bit computers should be able to handle 4GB RAM but I guess my address but is too small.
In any case, I'm developing a Ren'Py game and for both it and GIMP and a few other apps I could really use that extra gig.
Quick cut: I would like to back up the programs I've got installed so I can re-install them on the 64 bit version. Most of the things I've installed I've gotten from the Software Center, but for the things I've had to type into the terminal to install, well I haven't logged them anywhere so I'd have to dig up on Google again.

Wifi is on, their network is detected, I can go in and enter the WAP key and I get the strobing wifi icon in the top panel as though it's signing in, but after about 4 seconds I get a black screen and everything freezes. All that remains on the screen is the mouse pointer in its last position and a non-flashing cursor in the top left.
