Can anyone shed some light on "Karmic 64 bit" VM successfully running "TurboTax 2009"?
Reading the mail over on VirtualBox that someone has done so with "XP/ Mint 8/ VM".

when I run synaptic I can open the list of apps. and select but then I apply to download and get "error we failed to fetch etc etc." Seems to be an rpm problem but not sure. ????

I was told that the TurboTax DRM overwrites a boot sector on the first hard drive, possibly causing problems to the "non-windows" OS. Up to now I had used TT on a W2K only machine. Now that I have converted the whole office to Ubuntu or dual boot, I don't have the option anymore.

Have been using Karmic kaola for a few months on my toshiba tecra laptop..as of yesterday unable to boot up..all I get is a black screen on start up with no further activity..no bios menu etc..the led lights up for the power source and occasionally lights up on the hard drive which seems to make some noise as if trying to function...did connect it up to an external monitor which displayed the start up toshiba logo but then came up with the message error: "invalid enviroment block" unable to load default boot entries.am wondering if 1. there is a fault with the grub set up?2. Something more serious as my laptop screen refuses to function?3. Will I be able to retrieve my hard drive data using ubuntu live cd connected to an external monitor?

1) Will TurboTax (through 9.10) run using "Wine"?
2) Will Garmin's "City Navigator 2009" etc. run? Or, if you know some other way for a "work around" ? I'm using a WUBI install of "Karmic".

I have Karmic Koala 9.10 working (near) perfectly on my iMac7,1, as identified by
Code:
NOTE: See below for Lucid 10.04 update to these instructions
IMPORTANT: You need to complete the installation procedure while connected to internet via the WIRED network. Then you can enable the wireless by installing the restricted drivers, after the install is complete. Also the fglrx ATI Video driver is effortlessly installed via Menu > System > Administration > Hardware Drivers
The sound card gave me some trouble, as it is an Intel HDA Model, reported as 'Codec: Realtek ALC889A' by
Code:
It shows up in lspci as:
Code:
It sounded rather tinny at first, when I tried mbp3 and other model names. Then I added the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf :
Code:
After reboot, my sound is full and can be put much louder than before. Jack detection works. Some people might have to leave out the power saving options. See below.
dmesg reports:
Code:
Sources consulted are mostly the kernel documentation ( Enter into the terminal: sudo apt-get install linux-doc
The relevant info can be found in HD-Audio-Models.txt.gz and HD-Audio.txt.gz in /usr/share/doc/linux-doc/sound/alsa )

I'm looking at the 2009 apple mac mini ([URL]and wondering if anyone has gotten dual head working? I'm putting two 17" or 19" monitors on, so nothing too adventurous. I know that I'll require the "Mini-DisplayPort-to-DVI" to get Dual DVI Adpaters, but I wanted to confirm that dual head would be supported from the start. I'm aware that there are issues with rebooting the device, possibly as a result of the wireless drivers. That doesn't bother me. Dual-head is a requirement I intend installing 9.10 and dual booting macos for firmware updates.

When I try to run Maya 2009 the Konsole shows me this error:
$ sh /usr/autodesk/maya2009-x64/bin/maya2009
/usr/autodesk/maya2009-x64/bin/maya2009: line 23: syntax error near unexpected token `"$OSname"'
/usr/autodesk/maya2009-x64/bin/maya2009: line 23: `switch ("$OSname")'
I had Maya 2009 running on this computer in Ubuntu before I switched Distros
I have installed my Nvidia driver and tcsh. I have updated everything using yum and have completely disabled SElinux and I am now at a complete loss.
My Specs
Fedora 10 64bit
Intel Quad Core
4Gb Ram
Geforce 8800gt Palit 1Gb edition

I tried both installing 11.3 on top of 11.2 and a new install with the same result on a couple of different mac pros (with 2009 ATI Radeon HD 4870 with 512MB of GDDR5 memory, 2.66 GHz 2x4 core Xeon 3500, 24 GB of memory). The install was done via the downloadable dvd from opensuse.org. The graphics of the install process looked fine as well as the configuration. When it came time to boot, however, the suse splash screen showed up and then the monitor went dark. The graphics seems to be frotzed. Now attempting to boot from the DVD does not cause the display to do anything. Even putting a mac DVD restore disk (and using C during boot) does not result in anything on the display). Any ideas of what the installation could have done -- seems like a no-brainer that something is screwed up with the graphics card, but I have no real proof and even less idea of what to try next.

Now, as a new to linux person I thought I would try a distro that makes the transition pretty smooth.But, I have already found a problem. PC linux OS 2009 looks good, feels good, but when I play any media through Amarok or video through any of its media players, there is no sound.I made sure that it wasn't muted, and I turned all areas of the PC up as high as they would go, but nothing.

After yum installed me fuse-ntfs-3g-2009.11.14-1.el5.rf.i386 I noticed that on one NTFS partition directories created by a normal user were writable only by root, although the user's umask was correct (0022; actually the files had root as group owner).I have a second partition mounted with exactly the same options in /etc/fstab where this problem did not occur.
/dev/hdb1 /win/d ntfs-3g uid=500,gid=500,umask=0007,nls=utf8 0 0
/dev/hda7 /win/f ntfs-3g uid=500,gid=500,umask=0007,nls=utf8 0 0
I ran a "yum downgrade fuse-ntfs-3g" and the problem was gone.Would be good to get a new version of the driver into the repos.

in an attempt to demonstrate just how compatible our college Macs are (please hold the tomatoes) I'm trying to install Ubuntu Karmic alongside Mac OS X Leopard and Windows XP Pro SP2. The problem is, I hold down 'C' to boot from the CD, and all I get is a black screen with a flashing DOS-style cursor. If I boot it without holding C, it works just fine, booting into either Mac or Windows (whichever I specified).This is understandably irritating, and I'm trying to figure out the source of the problem.

When I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid, I guess one of those upgrades was the tex engine, it was upgraded to texlive 2009.Though It can render everything I could render beforehand, I am having trouble about one thing. I cannot use the additional preferences that can be used to edit an image when using includegraphics function.
For example:
egin{figure} [H]
centering
includegraphics[width=0.7linewidth,angle=-90,trim = 5mm 8mm 10mm 0mm, clip]{example.ps}
end{figure}
Used to rotate my ps file, trim it, then scale it as specified. Now, I get an error:
./Rapor.tex:59:Illegal unit of measure (pt inserted) ...e=-90,trim = 5mm 8mm 10mm 0mm, clip]{example.ps}
If there is only [width=linewidth] tex doesn't recognize linewidth and prints:
./Rapor.tex:59:Missing number, treated as zero...includegraphics[width=linewidth]{example.ps}
and the output file has the text within the square brackets, rather than the image.
Somehow there is a problem or a change in how this usage is interpreted. I am using:
usepackage{float}
usepackage{graphicx}
packages that are related to graphics. I'm using Kile 2.0.85, but the problem is editor independent, I get the same results with Texmaker. I am using the exact same .tex sources that I used with Karmic.
What I've tried:
I installed texlive packages from scratch, with Kile.I changed the graphicx.sty file with a version that I found on the net.

I have installed Debian 8 Jessie on my mid 2009 (5.5?) macbook pro. My computer is dual booted with OS X. I installed / on a partition with 30GB space, /home with 40GB, and swap with 4GB. My computer states are: 4GB ram, Intel Core Two Duo CPU 8700 2.53 Ghz x2, Graphics Gallium 0.4 on NVAC. The system has been running great compared to any other distro I have tried, except for that it randomly freezes sometimes. I've been running it for 4 days now and it has locked up 4 times.
Twice waking from suspend, once when changing the desktop background photo, and once after a reboot. I've a little afraid of messing with NVIDIA drivers as I tried that with various other distros and every time I rebooted after using these drivers the system would never boot into GUI and crazy kernal panic would insue. This is the closest I have come to successfully running linux on my mac. If there are any logs or information I can provide to find a solution to the freezing that would be amazing, because I absolutely love this setup!

I'm running Maya 2009 64 bits on Fedora 13 64 bits in GNOME Desktop and it's run perfectly, but the thing I cannot believe is the openmotif UI. I can't believe that a software like Maya on this gorgeous OS looks like a '90 MS-DOS program. Is there anything we can do from GNOME/Linux to change this? or this is a Autodesk lazy programmer that cannot rewrite their UI in at least GTK.

I wanted to installed Skype on Mandriva 2009 x64, but qt4 was a pre requisite so I installed it first (from the control panel). I still got an error when trying to install Skype (downloaded rpm), so I tried to reboot. However, now I just get a black screen instead of a login prompt. I have had a lot of issues with X11, but I usually get at least a prompt, I don't even get that now. Just a black screen... If I hit ctrl+alt+F2 I can log in as root, and I tried to start x, but I get a message saying there is a problem with D-sub.

My work reponsibilities now include a new server running Centos 5.2 on a Dual Xeon Dell server machine with Raid 1 on 2 160Gb disks, but I have no experience of Linux, let alone Centos.I figured I'd download an image and load it on a spare machine just so I could get used to the OS and try things out without risking my live server. My only available spare at present is a Toshiba laptop from 2000 (it was top of the range at the time, but probably looks bad compared to my pocket smartphone now).My questions are:
a) Is it feasible to load Centos on this old donkey of a laptop? Would I struggle to find the right drivers, etc., or is it all contained in the distribution?
b) Assuming it runs, would the differences between the two implementations significantly affect my learning experience?
c) Assuming the two are similar enough to make the laptop a useful reference/staging/learning tool, where do I start? I've already downloaded an ISO image for LiveCD (i386) and burned it to a CD but the CD doesn't seem to have anything I recognise. Windows (both Vista and XP) treats it like any data CD and shows no autorun behaviour with it.
