View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently loaded Ubuntu 9.10 which runs perfectly, except for the power management system.I go into the GUI power management screen and tell it to use the screen-saver after ten minutes, but NEVER suspend/ hibernate but it suspends/hibernates anyway, sometimes after an hour, sometimes hours later. Is it possible to keep the screen-saver but disable the rest of the power management system?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been having a problem with every Ubuntu version I have used where the screen blanks automatically after a few minutes when the computer is left alone.I have set all the settings in the system BIOS and power management settings to disable screen saving features. The screen saver options are set to the following: Pictures Folder, Idle after 2 hours, Activate when Idle unchecked.Require password is checked.
These are my settings, but in about 10 minutes of not being touched, each computer goes to a blank screen and I have to use my password to get back to the desktop.I originally installed Ubuntu 8.04.3 on my desktop, and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on one of my laptop computers. I have sense upgraded the desktop to 9.10 and then to 10.04.I updated the first laptop to 10.04 and freshly installed 10.04 onto another laptop.I am having this same problem on all three computers and had the problem on each computer from the beginning.I ran update manager today about an hour ago and have not tested this problem, but I expect it is still there. I created a document with nothing but the time and left it on the laptop. I will see how long it takes for the screen blanker to activate.I searched the forum and found two unrelated problems, one of which was the opposite, someone who could not get the screen saver to activate.
I am using "Puredyne" distro, that is Ubuntu. After some time I've been not typing any key the screen-saver starts, but it is malfunctioning because it gradually blanks the screen and does not allow me to take control of the system again. So I ask you how to disable this screen-saver or enable another one that works.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI wanted to installed Skype on Mandriva 2009 x64, but qt4 was a pre requisite so I installed it first (from the control panel). I still got an error when trying to install Skype (downloaded rpm), so I tried to reboot. However, now I just get a black screen instead of a login prompt. I have had a lot of issues with X11, but I usually get at least a prompt, I don't even get that now. Just a black screen... If I hit ctrl+alt+F2 I can log in as root, and I tried to start x, but I get a message saying there is a problem with D-sub.

View 2 Replies View RelatedRight after a fresh install I went into terminal b4 logging into gnome and after about 10 minutes the screen goes black. I can wiggle the mouse or touch the keyboard and it goes away. I play games with a controller and since I'm not touching the mouse or keyboard this happens every 10 minutes or so. I went into gnome and put screen saver to 2 hours and not to happen when idle but this didn't make it stop. I reinstalled again and it still happens.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI did this on my new Ubuntu 9.10 system - the icon look like a PC screen with a padlock on it. Hover over says "Protect your computer from unauthorized use." and activates the screen saver/screen lock. I have no idea how I added it to the Gnome panel and I am wanting to do the same on a new PC. I have not had any luck searching - if I knew what to call what I am searching for I would probably remember how to do it
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running a SLC 5.2 with a Gnome 2.16 desktop setup for all the class room terminals. Where can I determine the status of the screensaver. The value could then be periodicaly tested within a "cron" script. If screen saver was running then a "skill" could then be called to force a complete logout releasing the terminal for another student.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have mandriva 2008 installed on my system. From past 2 years it was working fine. But now suddenly i weird problem has started. Whenever i boot the mandriva 2008 OS, it boots up with no problem and comes to login screen, it takes the username and password but it restarts the X-server again. But if i give wrong username or password, it shows login failed.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have set the Space Saver as my keyboard layout in the KDE control center*, but Shift+NumLock/ScrollLock still does not work as it should to disable NumLock. I have tried both ibm_space_saver and ibm_spacesaver (isn't this practically a duplicate entry?) and restarted after each, to no avail.
Also, a second, possibly related problem -- why, at the login screen, does it take so long for my keyboard and mouse to start working? Maybe ten seconds after the login prompt seems to be ready -- only then can I actually do anything.
* I think this should be in Keyboard & Mouse instead of Regional & Language, but I can understand why it's there.
I am trying to change the login screen from "Configure Your Desktop>Advanced>Login Manager".When I go into the login manager, everything is grayed out,you cannot change anything.I have to change it as root but I don't know how to do that. Therefore I need help regarding that. I did google searching but it was not of any help because they were for previous releases of mandriva or other distros which didn't apply to my case.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI successfully Installed nvidia graphics driver version 173.14.12 for Geforce FX5200 on Mandriva 2008 (It couldn't find a precompiled header, so built the driver against devel) .
It worked OK, everything became faster(than not having a driver) and OpenGL games were acceptable too.
Then I enabled 3D desktop effects (to it's medium level), it said it should log off, it did and restarted X server and then (autologin) Gnome didn't come. It's the screen in loading desktop, and cursor shows "working in background"(busy but shows the cursor itself too).
I'm not very interested in 3D effects, I just wanted to see how it is, now I want to know how to get it back.
I tried to go through Alt+Ctrl+F1 and close the program supposed to do 3D effects, or restart to runlevel 3 and change XF86Config but nothing seemed relative to 3D effects.
I have recently installed 11.04 natty on Intel Core i3-2100 3.1 GHZ using its own graphic accelerator. When the screen is idle for a long time, more than 1 hour, I get a black screen with the mouse arrow but nothing else. the mouse moves the cursor and Ctl+Alt+F1 does work. How to fix this problem?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I hit Alt+Ctrl+L my system is starting the ScreenSaver but not locking the screen. The keybinding is correctly set. This is happening in only root account but in another user account it works perfect !
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been a Linux user for years but just recently I decided to take the plunge and use Ubuntu Linux as my primary OS (with Windows on the side for any games that don't run well in CrossOver Games).
Anyway, one thing I was curious about was whether or not I could get some of my Windows screen savers to work on Linux. Specifically I had been using "Blue Screen", a cute little ss made by SysInternals that emulates various versions of Windows BSODs.
The file comes as a .scr file (like all Windows screen savers). I wanted to know if there was any program that converted .scr files into Linux compatable screen savers. If not, that's still OK as I've now been rocking "Electric Sheep"!
I'm running Ubuntu Linux 8.10 on a HP DV9000 with an 1.7GHz Intel Centrino Duo processor, 2GB ram, and an nVidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics card.
I tried both installing 11.3 on top of 11.2 and a new install with the same result on a couple of different mac pros (with 2009 ATI Radeon HD 4870 with 512MB of GDDR5 memory, 2.66 GHz 2x4 core Xeon 3500, 24 GB of memory). The install was done via the downloadable dvd from opensuse.org. The graphics of the install process looked fine as well as the configuration. When it came time to boot, however, the suse splash screen showed up and then the monitor went dark. The graphics seems to be frotzed. Now attempting to boot from the DVD does not cause the display to do anything. Even putting a mac DVD restore disk (and using C during boot) does not result in anything on the display). Any ideas of what the installation could have done -- seems like a no-brainer that something is screwed up with the graphics card, but I have no real proof and even less idea of what to try next.
