Ubuntu :: Is Anyone Paying For Canonical Desktop Support?

Jan 5, 2011

I'm want to reach others who have paid for Canonical support services.I'd like this thread to collect various impressions -- PRO and CON -- along with suggestions for using paid support. Please consider a linux admin with under-10 ubuntu boxes to support, who do they turn to for help? How does your need for help mesh with the contracted services as written? How does your need for help mesh with the contracted services in practice? Please avoid flame and vitriol about paying for support. Please avoid flame or vitriol about Canonical in general.

Some people need a mother-ship to contact when the going gets rough. Many times I've been unable to create the right question(s) to get online answers without spending (wasting) time getting nothing from searches and postings. Anything in a niche makes the situation that much worse. Other times the answers involved hand code patches and build something, etc -- skills I have but that are rusty enough to mean long hours to deploy. When does paid support make sense?

What skills are needed to find online answers 80% of the time?If this post steps on forum rules, I apologize in advance and expect the moderators to spank me accordingly. If this post is okay, as is, I expect the moderators to slap others who otherwise disrupt the dialog.

Software :: Uninstalling Canonical Landscape On Ubuntu?

Sep 13, 2009

uninstall landscape on my Ubuntu 9.04 headless NAS because I do not use it. Running an uninstall simulation: "sudo aptitude -s remove landscape-client" produces: The following packages will be REMOVED:

acl{u} hal{u} hal-info{u} landscape-client landscape-common{u} libffi5{u} libhal-storage1{u} libhal1{u} libpolkit-dbus2{u} libpolkit-grant2{u} libsmbios2{u} pm-utils{u} policykit{u} powermgmt-base{u} python-dbus{u} python-gobject{u} python-pexpect{u} python-pycurl{u} python-smartpm{u} python-twisted-bin{u} python-twisted-core{u} python-twisted-web{u} python-zopeinterface{u} smartdimmer{u}

0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 24 to remove and 3 not upgraded. To me it seems that it want to uninstall support for acl among other things. But I don't want to remove support for acl as I use it on my files. And also should "hal" be removed?

Ubuntu :: Canonical Would Maintain Updates For Only Selected Packages?

May 1, 2010

After reading this announcement, I don't understand if Xubuntu 10.04, or others ubuntu 10.04 variants, will be also LTS. What I understand is that :

- Ubuntu 10.04 (Gnome) Desktop Edition is a LTS.
- Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition is a LTS
- Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition is NOT a LTS
- Kubuntu 10.04 seems to be a LTS
- Xubuntu 10.04
- Mythbuntu 10.04
- Ubuntu Studio 10.04

Obviously, I can't understand how some variant could be LTS and not some others : they are all using the same repositories. So, Canonical would maintain updates for only selected packages ?Does anyone knows more about that LTS attribution ?

Ubuntu :: Dependency Tree For Canonical-supported SDL Packages?

Jun 17, 2010

Some time ago I installed SDL in Ubuntu 10.04 using Synaptic Package Manager. Now, there are upgrades available for the following packages:

libsdl1.2-dev
libsdl1.2debian
libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio

Trying to upgrade them seemed to reveal contradictory dependencies. If I select "mark for upgrade" on libsdl1.2-dev or libsdl1.2debian, Synaptic says I have to remove libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio. But if I select "mark for upgrade" on libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio, Synaptic tells me that I have to upgrade libsdl1.2-dev and libsdl1.2debian! I'm worried about breaking something, so I haven't upgraded yet. Is there an error in the dependency tree, or am I missing something obvious?

Ubuntu :: Lucid Canonical Method To Disable Services?

Jul 19, 2010

Until Karmic Koala I could enable/disable services at startup (such as ssh or mysql) by issuing a update-rc.d -f someservice remove. On reboot, it would no longer run, and I could re-enable if necessary by, for example, running a update-rc.d someservice default.

However, it seems that now in Lucid Lynx this no longer works. For example, if I do a nmap localhost I can see that the ports for the respective services are open, therefore I assume they are likely running (which an attempted access confirms). For example, if I do a /etc/init.d/ssh stop, the ssh service is respawned. I've found that service ssh stop or initctl stop ssh effectively stops the service (i.e. it is no longer "respawned" if "killed"). But so far I haven't found documentation that conclusively indicates how to disable the service start on (re)boot.

So I ask you, what is now the currently "canonical" or "standard" way to enable/disable these services (particularly ones such as ssh or mysql) from starting on boot on Ubuntu? I'd like to avoid having to remove the respective packages if possible (as some posts suggest), since in some occasions I'm interested in manually running those services -- therefore, having to install/uninstall packages is impractical.

Ubuntu Installation :: Canonical Repository Missing After Moving To Lucid

Oct 3, 2010

After moving to Lucid, I have no flashplayer. Eventually, I tracked the problem to a missing Cannonical repository. I inserted the line in the sources list: [URL] Now Synaptic reports:

E: Type [URL] is not known on line 45 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I have re-checked everything I can think of, and remain baffled!

Ubuntu :: Best Remote For Windows Desktop Support

I know I can use Terminal Server RDP v5 to do remote desktop support for Windows boxes - but would like to use something that is easier to use - for the Windows user. Is there a package that allows the user to sign onto a web site and then I can take over their Windows box using my Ubuntu box? Or is there something else as simple without me having to walk them through finding their IP, making sure their firewall isn't blocking me, etc. etc. I would love to show my clients that I can do almost everything with Linux instead of Windows.

Ubuntu Installation :: Use Of Unity Desktop - No 3D Support

Dec 4, 2010

When the live CD is booted up, there is a notice saying Ubuntu is sorry, as there is no 3D support in the laptop. If the Live CD doesn't see the video card etc, then there is a problem. The laptop has NVidia Geforce 310M, meaning it has the 3D support, only Ubuntu doesn't see it on live boot, so what the use of the Unity desktop? The Gnome starts up.

I have seen Gnome, but I'd like to see Unity. How can I do it? I can of course download the NVidia driver. But to activate the driver, I have to restart the laptop, then the Live session would go away. By the way, if Linux to be everybody's OS, I think the "restricted" drivers should be included, as they are allowed by the owners to be downloaded!

My GPU is an ATI Radeon HD 5670, and I've already tried the proprietary driver from ATI. It hung my system and gave me loads of issues, and to be frank, the ATI driver has NEVER worked for me. I'm using 32-bit Fedora 14, but if I remember correctly the 64 bit version of Fedora 14 did let me do this without an installer.

Also will hold a file as open periodically (may be a Samba Issue).

Does the O/S have to support this standard, or is it a function of the Hardware...?

Ubuntu :: Community Repo Updates / Canonical Does Not Provide Updates For Warsow?

Dec 20, 2010

I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:

"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."

So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?

I know the solution is to change my whole system language to that language, but I don't want to do that, as I am not very fluent in it. Is there any way to enable support for that language while keeping English as the language used to display my desktop?

CentOS 5 :: No "Desktop" Section In Forums - Support Ipod Connection For Podcasts

Aug 13, 2011

We've been using CentOS on our servers for many years, and remain happy customers. Been considering also using CentOS for desktops, since there's some advantages in standardisation. Also wondering whether CentOS really does belong on desktop. Perhaps its instructive that there's no "Desktop" section in these CentOS forums. Maybe a message buried there.

I'm finding that CentOS 5.6 desktop can do most things we need, except support Ipod connection for podcasts.
FLOSS weekly and SecurityNow are part of regular entertainment. gpodder is good in other 'nixes, but seems difficult to install in CentOS. Should I pursue this, or keep using another distro for daily desktops?

Server :: Driver Support - QME2572 - Qlogic - Card Became Support By The Kernel

I'm trying to find out when QME2572 (Qlogic) card became support by the kernel. We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.

Debian :: EXFAT Support Vs NTFS Support ?

Aug 25, 2010

I'm looking to dual-boot Windows 7 and Debian 6 upon its release on my sister's laptop. I want to share a partition between the two of them so that /home points to this directory and the Windows equivalent also points to it (C:Users).

Anyway, I've heard good and bad things about the NTFSMount driver (I think it's NTFS-3G now) and the NTFSprogs project and so I am not so certain what I should believe. I do know that NTFS has relatively high overhead, though I do not recall the source of this assertion, so I am considering the use of EXFAT. An open source EXFAT project is hosted on Google Code at [url] and it utilizes the kernel module FUSE.

I'm quite certain that I've got everything covered on the Windows side -- that is, I know that both NTFS and EXFAT will be suitable filesystems for my required usage.

My issue is that I'm curious which will have superior performance and stability in Debian. I planned on building the package from source and mounting the device in my FSTAB but I have also found a PPA for Ubuntu on Launchpad at [url] that I could borrow the debian/rules from and make a .deb package from.

What do you guys think? Should I go at it with the EXFAT or NTFS partitioning? Is NTFS-3G actually fairly supported at this point? Or perhaps should I consider some alternate method?

I have also considered that the only files she will be sharing are those of music, videos, and pictures so it could be better to just link /home/xxxx/Pictures (Music and Videos, too) to the new partition instead of all of /home.

Ubuntu Installation :: Make A Live-USB Containing Among Others Both Desktop I386 And Desktop AMD64

May 1, 2010

I want to make a live-USB containing among others both Ubuntu desktop i386 and Ubuntu desktop AMD64. How do I go about this? I tried using unetbootin, first adding i386 and then amd64, but that failed. My computer with an athlon II did manage to boot, and showed it had booted into the 64-bit version (ram shown was 3.9 GB, i386 goes to about 2.7 I think), my wife's computer with a pentium 4 did not manage to boot, got to a black screen. I think this is because casper has issues, being overwritten (I'd seen something to that effect somewhere), and thus only the latest version added being booted (in this case amd 64).

I'm under the impression that the startup disc creator included won't help, nor won't the multicd.sh script, so how do I circumvent the issues?
