I'm looking for a screensaver application which will show random photos from my collection, but rather than just changing between images, I'd like something which shows them in a cool way, for example, on my brother's Mac, the screensaver displays photos, but as if they're being dropped onto a surface, i.e. not always with the same orientation.

In F-Spot there's this nice function that shows a slideshow of all your photos as a screensaver. Since I've abandoned F-Spot in favor of Digikam URL...I was wondering if there is a way to do something similar in Digikam.
View 7 Replies View Relatedi recently ressurected an old laptop by making a great digital photo frame out of it. I used a nifty app called Webilder (webilder.org) which grabs photos from my flickr account and any tags i specify and sets them as my desktop and changes them every minute. Then i used some code/preference panels (dont remember exactly) that i found by googling to hide the top bar and the task bar, and the mouse pointer after it hasnt moved for a second. that way my photos are full screen....however, after 10 minutes, my screen changes to a blank (black) screen. the backlight is still on. it's killing me cause this thing is perfect without that one bug.i have the screensaver & power management settings set accordingly... (never idle, etc) and i used "gconf-editor" to edit my screensaver prefs... everything looked correct but i set all the integer values to 100000 just to be safe.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThere's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.
Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..
interesting commands for the command line so I thought I'd ask people who've used Linux a lot. The only one I know is:jp2a (JPG to ASCII), a small program which converts JPG images to ASCII. It's an amazingly fun program to use, and everybody think it's awesome to be able to view images in ASCII. If you want to view a photo which isn't JPG you can simply use the convert program and pipe it in.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to configure NFS sharing behind a firewall, I got it to work and all but I was caught by something that (to me anyways) seems odd.I've been able to mount the export on another computer and am transferring files over as we speak, but I'm just interested in knowing why the RELATED,ESTABLISHED rule seems to be catching almost all the traffic coming from the other node. Any ideas? Should I be concerned that my firewall isn't protecting anything or something?

we usually have to access a batch of computers that is located on campus. This is straightforward enough on Windows, the OS that the computer support center cares about, but I'm interested to see how I would handle this in Debian. The process for Windows is:
1) Run the authentication program, which runs in the background.
2) Use Exceed on Demand (or Putty, but I can't really use that for my classes ), and log into the server. From there, it lets you log in to whatever computer you want. When logging on with Exceed on Demand, Solaris environment is then launched.
Now, I know there's not a lot of technical information here, and I apologize, but I know next to nothing about networking. What I do know is that I'm remotely accessing a secure computer, and then I ssh over to another computer (when using Putty, which was only command-line). I was wondering how easy or hard this would be to do through Debian, including the fact that I need to have the authentication program running.
Some minimized apps no longer appear in the top menu and by that are no longer accessible.For example firefox with the minimize addon or Jungel Disk backup service.How can I reach apps that minimized them self and are not shown in the top menu?

Photoprint would be perfect, but for some reason doesn't like my printer.
Gnome Photo Printer doesn't give me the control I need over layout, or resolution, paper type, etc.
Shotwell and Gthumb don't seem to have the facility to print multiple photos in one go on a single sheet. So I am kind of stuck.
On the best photo tools. I love GIMP for photo editing, but I'm looking for alternatives to the default viewer and manager (currently Shotwell) for downloading images off my camera and organizing them.

The microsecond I click "upload", it's gone.When I restart Firefox, I have the option of restoring my previous session, as normally happens after a FF crash.Is this a documented bug? View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 3TB home server storing all my files and a mix of XP, Vista & Ubuntu clients on a Gigabit network. When I access a folder with JPEG photos on the XP or Vista machines and I have them set to display thumbnails that is exactly what I get. The thumbnails load nice and fast. When I access the same folders on the Ubuntu machines with "icon view" it only displays a black icon that says "JPG" but if I copy that folder over to a local drive on the Ubuntu machines then the thumbs display just fine. Does anyone have any idea how to change this on the Ubuntu machines so they load thumbnails for networked photos as well?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been using a Canon program in XP for downloading pictures from digital cameras (Canon & other).This program puts all the pictures in daily-dated folders, 2010-08-23, 2010-08-24 etc.These dates are creation dates, not download dates.I have several thousand pictures filed like that & I like it.
I am trying to shift my photo activity from XP to Ubuntu, so am experimenting with download managers, but have not found anything yet which produces tha same result as the Canon program or anything as good.
The default program seems to be F-Spot (for how long?) & that creates day-number folders (23) inside month-number folders (08) inside year-number folders (2010). Not sure whether these are creation dates or download dates.
gThumb puts everything into a folder labelled, say 2010-08-23--21.46.19 that being the time, to the second, of the download. It also renumbered all the pictures from 00001.jpg which I don't want!DigiKam put my fresh download into an existing folder I had created last year. Can any of these applications be persuaded to download pictures to folders with a year-month-day label, based on creation date?

The installation works fine, but when I load Digikam it does not show all of the photo albums in /home/darren/pictures and those albums that it does list have no photos in them. Also my requirements are fairly limited I use GIMP to do any editing. But need to be able upload to Picasa.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMaybe I don't pay enough attention. I just know that whenever I've wanted to resize an image or email it, I've been able to do it pretty quickly. It was usually a two step process of resizing with an editor and then sending from a menu. Today, though, I went into the shiny new Shotwell and there appears to be no way to resize; or email.
OK. Went back into F-Spot. Surely there's an easy way to resize and/or email from there. Nope. Are we missing an easy way to do this or am I missing something? I love Gimp but do I have to use that to resize an image? Seems like overkill. Ostensibly, there should be a one stop process - either from an app or from Nautilus - send image and a quick dialog to ask what size and GO!

Now I need to archive lots of images and put them in a gallery. From a previous post I learned of Drupal, Joomla and Gallery. The problem is I really don't know where to start. I've attached some details of the server.
My questions are -
- Will my hosting company allow me to install a CMS like Drupal or do I have to use only the modules they supply?
- How can I set up a test site alongside the existing one and merge them later?
- How should I arrange the directories for a gallery with, say, 10 categories?
- How do I prevent any security weaknesses like SQL injection from happening?
