I recently (like yesterday) decided to put linux on my laptop because I'm annoyed with windows. However after formatting my hard drive I seem to have an error message at the same point in windows xp and linux when attempting to log on. I have abandoned windows completely and intend to only run Linux on my laptop however after I type my password the following message pops up:
There was an error setting up inter-process communications for KDE. The message returned by the system was:
Could not read network connection list.

Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running!
I have attempted to delete the only dcopserver file I can find and ran some suggested commands at the command prompt (I haven't used one since Windows 3.1) to remove an ICE file in hopes that it would recreate the file and run properly after reboot and neither effort prevailed. My next step is dropping it from escalating heights until it either works or dies.
How can I view a list of network adapters?
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I install Ubuntu 9.04 the wireless works fine on my Toshiba Satellite. However, when I let the update manager update to the newest things the wireless doesn't even show up as a choice, as if the wireless card isn't installed. The drop down menu from the network icon only has wired on the list and I can't seem to find anywhere to set the wireless as existing. The same thing happens when I install a new version of Ubuntu 9.10. It just doesn't seem to be there. If anyone knows why this is or how I can fix it it would be greatly appreciated. If you need any more info from me just let me know.

netstat -a
would do the job, however netstat produces quite much output:

I assume that this can be done by a combination of "cat", "sed" and "grep", but I have simply no clue of how to strip the uneccessary information.
Given a single SMB network share (for example, \server\SHARED_FOLDER), I want to recursively list all the files, including those in the subdirectories (like find(1)).
I would prefer to do it in Linux, but I also accept Windows answers.
interesting commands for the command line so I thought I'd ask people who've used Linux a lot. The only one I know is:jp2a (JPG to ASCII), a small program which converts JPG images to ASCII. It's an amazingly fun program to use, and everybody think it's awesome to be able to view images in ASCII. If you want to view a photo which isn't JPG you can simply use the convert program and pipe it in.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a screensaver application which will show random photos from my collection, but rather than just changing between images, I'd like something which shows them in a cool way, for example, on my brother's Mac, the screensaver displays photos, but as if they're being dropped onto a surface, i.e. not always with the same orientation.

I'm trying to configure NFS sharing behind a firewall, I got it to work and all but I was caught by something that (to me anyways) seems odd.I've been able to mount the export on another computer and am transferring files over as we speak, but I'm just interested in knowing why the RELATED,ESTABLISHED rule seems to be catching almost all the traffic coming from the other node. Any ideas? Should I be concerned that my firewall isn't protecting anything or something?

Other terminals (F3 and F4) don't appear to have any interesting information on why it barfed. I tried it with a text install too, much the same result. I get this error with other Centos 5.n based Asterisk and GUI bundled mini distors too, specifically TrixBox
we usually have to access a batch of computers that is located on campus. This is straightforward enough on Windows, the OS that the computer support center cares about, but I'm interested to see how I would handle this in Debian. The process for Windows is:
1) Run the authentication program, which runs in the background.
2) Use Exceed on Demand (or Putty, but I can't really use that for my classes ), and log into the server. From there, it lets you log in to whatever computer you want. When logging on with Exceed on Demand, Solaris environment is then launched.
Now, I know there's not a lot of technical information here, and I apologize, but I know next to nothing about networking. What I do know is that I'm remotely accessing a secure computer, and then I ssh over to another computer (when using Putty, which was only command-line). I was wondering how easy or hard this would be to do through Debian, including the fact that I need to have the authentication program running.
Just i want to ask doubts in c programming. I dont know whether this is the right place to ask doubts in c. If this is not a correct place, may i know where can i get help for c programming?is there any active forum or mailing list for c programming?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Samba server running in my Lan (mainly for file and print service). This server will act as a PDC (don't ask why...). I have a question: Under a share I can use the "read list" and "write list" options with groups (eg @users). Is that group a Linux or Samba group? If it's the later, am I forced to use the net groupmap command, or it is sufficient to have a group name in the /etc/group file? Should I add samba/linux users to that group (with net rpc) or is sufficient to have the group membership set in the linux?

Is there an application or plugin which periodically displays the contents of the tasklist or even better, it briefly displays the most urgent/important tasks when I login? Or anything else which automatically displays the most important tasks. Currently I have to open the task list and look at them (which I usually forget). I do not mean some kind of alarm when the task is due but more a daily reminder of what to do.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using DHCP on my home network. There could be as many as 5 computers logged in at any given time. Their IP addresses change depending on the sequence they log in.I want to be able to connect to them from any of them (some wired, some wireless) and share files by issuing a mount command for the appropriate shared drive.My question is how to get the IP of each computer when I only know the names of the computers. Pinging the computer name succeeds, but it does not give the IP.In other words I am looking for a Linux command that will come back with a list of IP's with their corresponding computer names so I can issue the right mount command. I would like to issue this command from a Linux terminal, but would also be happy to issue it from a Windows XP station.

I need to create a program where the user creates an account and he/she is entitled to add interests and creating friendships with other users.The main algorithm depends on an object which is the user and its attributes are adding interests, friends, so on.Users are stored in a linked list while their interests are stored in another list.What I want to do is every time a new user is created dynamically create a new list during execution for personal info. storage. Is that possible?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm quite new to c++ programming, so my concepts are not so increased yet...
I wanna to create a list to store my objects. I'll resume them here:
Code:

And what I want to do is an event list:

Sometimes this works and sometimes I got "segmentation fault".
I think I'm doing it wrong, cause these objects have different sizes, so I don't know if I could have all of them in a single array.
Is there something like GtkRecentManager that will give you a list of recently-used or most-used applications instead of files, or will GtkRecentManager give you apps too?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a C header file which have arrays of predefined(known) structure type. But i dont have names of arrays and their size. when i include that file and compile my application, i want to know the names and sizesof those arrays.
purpose of application is to get the content of those arrays and to explain it in descriptive words instead of hex numbers.ofcourse this can be done by file pointers and reading also with out header file inclusion, but as i am working in C, once compiled, those variables are in my address space in i include header file.
I have a file witch I need to list 10 line by 10 lines with something like press enter to go on in between.
Well, the problem is that i have absolutely no idea on how to implement this.
Can you give me some points?
I am an uploader to a various hosts, so this tiny script me a lot. I make a rar archive and split files with 100mb. I could get 3-4 or even 76 parts of rar files and it would take me some time to paste all these urls to remote upload function of filehosting sites. For example:
Code:
server:/home/cober/downloads/teevee# ls -al
total 358784
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 Dec 8 19:38 .
[code]....
I have a list of list and I'd like to sort the list according to the last value of each row.
Let's say we have the list
L1 = [ [1,2] , [4,6] , [78,-3] ]
I wish to get
L2 = [ [78,-3] , [1,2] , [4,6] ]
Is there a simple way to do that in python?
I would like to ping all my virtual hosts in virtual machine server with a oneliner. For example like this:
Code:
for i in $(seq 1 20); do if [[ $(ping host$i.virtualhostserver.com -c 2 2>/dev/null | grep "2 received") == "2 packets transmitted" ]]; then echo $i; fi; done
The problem is, that I'm afraid my if-sentence is somewhat wrong because it never gets a match even if I know, that host is up.
