Ubuntu :: 10.04 Gnome - Greeting Card Software

Jul 12, 2010

I am converting a guy's computer from XP to 10.04. He is an artist, and puts his artwork on cards for friends and family. I searched the web, and there wasn't much out there. I saw KreetingKard and actually got it to run on 10.04 gnome, but I think it isn't "high powered" enough for what he wants to do. Does anyone know of any software out there ? what about online software to do this?I can virtualbox XP so he can run his old software, but I really want him to stay with Linux if possible.

Hardware :: No Audio From Motherboard M3a32 MVP Deluxe Wi/Fi / Ubuntu Lucid 10.4?

May 24, 2010

Intro: Let me start by saying I've spent two days researching this issue and resolution. I am a noob to Linux, but I've done tons of research as I like to resolve my issues on my own. From the time I've spent with Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid over the past couple of weeks, I'm loving it and want to stick with it. I have it dual booting on my Laptop with no issues.

System:Motherboard: M3a32-MVP Deluxe Wi/FiVideo Card: ATI Radeon 3870 512 GBRam: 8GB corsair (4x2GB)HDD: Uh, several, there are 5 HDD's installed on my system with several OS's.Problems: No Audio from MB, Raid controller not working. My main concern right now is my audio. I have 2 512 GB Maxtor drives in Raid0 running Win7 Ultimate that I can't access, but like I said, the audio is more important.

I have audio coming from the HDMI port in the video card, but it's choppy. I'd rather use my MB's audio device anyway so I can utilize my surround sound system. I've obtained the Linux drivers from ASUS but don't know how to install them. Besides that, in sound preferences, it appears to be loaded and I've tried every combination of settings possible. And before you ask.. It's not muted, (this seems to be the typical first smart a$$ response to noobs regarding sound).aplay -l

Fedora Installation :: Installing On A SDHC Card - Installer Appears To Want To Install To Both SD Card And Also USB Stick

Jul 21, 2010

I have an EeePC 4g netbook which only has a 4Gb hard drive and I thought I would like to install Fedora 13 on an 8 Gb SDHC card and use it to boot the netbook.

As neither the netbook nor I have an optical drive, I made a bootable USB memory stick using Unetbootin which boots the netbook and could be used like a live CD to install Fedora.

On booting with the live USB stick, with the blank SD card in place, and clicking on the install icon, the installation starts but then there are 2 problems; the first is that the installer appears to want to install to both the SD card and also the USB stick. There is a tick in the box beside the USB stick which I can't remove.

I decided to ignore that and put a tick in the box beside the SD card but when it got to the point where it creates partitions it said "Could not find enough free space for automatic partitioning. Please use another partitioning method"

Surely 8 GB is more than enough space for partitioning, so where am I going wrong and why does it want to install on the USB stick as well?

Ubuntu :: Can't Restore Netbook To Factory

Jun 4, 2010

A friend gave me his netbook because he left for the military and it has Ubuntu on it. I know nothing about it and really need it to have the 7 home that came with it. I have searched forums and tried to figure this out on my own but I keep getting nowhere.

There is no CD drive on the netbook so I have been trying to install 7 with a flash drive. The netbook did not have a disk but I did get a serial number for 7 and I have an ISO of 7. I put it on my flash drive and tried to boot it, but when I click on unetboot menu "default" it just starts the 10 second timer over and doesnt load.

I used a live usb of ubuntu to go to gparted to delete the partitions so I could load up the usb with 7 on it, but again it does not work. It gives me a grub error if I try to boot up. I know there I deleted the partitions, but maybe something is still there?

In short: I need ubuntu off and windows 7 back on using only a flash drive, a serial for 7 and an ISO image.

I dont know if this matters but its a Toshiba Satellite T-115D.

Ubuntu :: How To Reset Mouse To Factory Defaults

Jul 27, 2010

I am on 10.4 with a Dell Notebook (E6400). I use it mostly with a USB mouse. Everything worked fine for about 2 months. Then I shutdown, unplugged the mouse, restarted without the mouse, and my trackpad is broken. It works a little, but text fields and some apps capture the mouse events and won't let go. For instance, the cursor gets stuck in a text field and there is no way (keyboard or mouse) to get out.

I've tried several times to fix this and I cannot. If I boot from a LiveCD then everything works fine. My theory is that the mouse configuration files somehow got corrupted in my plugging/unplugging of the external mouse. How can I reset the mouse to factory defaults? Are there a set of files I can copy over from the live CD?I tried to delete and recreate my xorg.conf file and this did not work either.

On the repos page it says this about kde 4.4 Factory: "These repositories feature the KDE packages under development for the upcoming openSUSE release and includes openSUSE specific patches". For reasons that are somewhat involved and that I won't go into right here I am stuck in openSUSE 11.0 and can't upgrade until I get a new machine which will be some time. Is Factory unfinished and will Kde 4.4 Factory work well in 11.0?

General :: How To Restore To Factory Settings

Dec 4, 2010

I just received this Acer Aspire One Aoa110 from my sister.
Originally Windows Xp, my cousin changed it to Linux.
Right now I am so frustrated with this, as I have no knowledge of Linux whatsoever.
I tried looking for the Acer recovery program, but I can't find it.
I do have to say that Linux is really fast, but I like personalizing my walllpaper where I can do it with Windows Xp..

So my question is, how can I restore this computer to how it was before my cousin tweaked it?

Here is what the desktop looks like right now:

Ubuntu Installation :: Vista - Cannot Get The Factory Restore To Start By Pressing The F8

Jun 25, 2010

I installed Ubuntu to dual boot with Vista that came with my Dell Inspiron 1420. Dell had a partition where the Vista install could be restored to factory state when the laptop was purchased.

After installing Ubuntu, I see:

I think the /dev/sda5 partition was the one that contains the Vista system restore information. And according to Dell documentation, I need to the F8 key at BIOS load time to make the laptop boot the restore partition.

However after the Ubuntu install, I cannot get the Factory Restore to start by pressing the F8. It worked before the Ubuntu install.

How to get to my state before I installed Vista. I want to be able to restore the laptop to the state before I installed Ubuntu.

Unfortunately, GRUB2 has picked this up and is showing the recovery system in the boot menu. Clearly this is dangerous because the user could reset the pc. How do I remove or hide this boot start up option? Other thoughts: I do not believe Easybcd works with xp/linux. is there another easy bootloader?

Ubuntu Installation :: A7N8X Deluxe Sound Fresh Install Sound Is Muffled And All Bass?

Jan 14, 2010

Recently installed Ubuntu 9.1 following an easy how to. The install session went really well, smooth and only had one little speed bump when deciding which drive to install to (running raid and did not want to loose other partition). Like most speed bumps I got passed it. Ran all the updates then decided to start listening to music with Rythmbox Music Player. The sound coming out of my Klipsch Pro Media 4.1 was muffled and sounded like just the subwoofer was on. I checked all connections and they were fine. I tried looking for equalizer but did not find it and then noticed the sound was like a skipping record. So I looked it up and came across some posts that I could not figure out if they were for my problem. Seemed to me they were just leading me in circles.

Ubuntu :: Installing A Tar Program?

Jun 20, 2010

I'm trying to install a program called Slam Soccer 2006 (it's original name is bolzplatz2006). Anyway, no package is available, so I'm having to install it using the tar.gz file. I've read all the Documentation that I could find on ubuntu sites, and I think I understand the extract, configure, make, install process. However, I keep getting stuck on the ./configure phase. When I type ./confiure into the command line it keeps telling me that no such command exists. I tried downloading Kludge Tarball installer so I could have a graphic interface to walk me through the problem. Everything seems fine until I get to the configure phase and I get the following message:

Usually my plan of action would be to pop the files under Program Files onto an external hard drive, then copy them over and voila.I'm not 100% sure what the Ubuntu equivalent is to Program Files. Google search suggests usr/bin, but it requires permission to move files there and I'm really not sure how to go about doing this.
