I am trying to install Fedora alongside Ubuntu but have run into a bit of a snag. I have the ISO burned to a disc, but it will not load on startup and doesn't have a prompt when the cd loads normally. I have files on the cd, but Ubuntu cannot read them.
View 7 RepliesMy FC12 laptop won't boot. During the attempted boot, after blue/white progress bars finish displaying on the bottom of screen, nothing more seems to happen. The screen isn't totally blank in that I seem to have a text cursor and keyboard input is displayed. But, no prompt, no login prompt, X isn't running, etc. If I hit ESCduring boot, it displays the boot messages and the boot sequence stops after "Starting atd". I'm not sure if it's related, but I had previously experimented with creating a new xorg.conf file by running "Xorg -configure' and was testing the new file with "X -?? /etc/x11/xorg.conf.new" (I forget what the -?? option was). I assumed that this would not overwrite the /etc/x11/xorg.conf file and that if I ran into problems, that the original xorg.conf would be in place. how I can get this miserable thing to boot?
View 4 Replies View Relatedi've installed directory server in a fedora 12 box, i got it running and i can access it using coldfusion to manage users and groups.i hit a snag when creating a user, this because coldfusion cannot generate a password, the directory server needs a certificate and a ssl connection.so i started googling for a way to generate and install a certificate on the server itself and in the directory.s is my administration server and directory(it's novabase directory) not the other one.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Wubi installation of Ubuntu (version 9.10, I think) that I recently installed was working fine at one point, but now it isn['t. I select Ubuntu instead of Windows from the Windows boot loader, but instead of getting the usual menu of different linux versions (I think 2, as I updated it at same point), and Windows, I get the GRUB command prompt instead.I've looked at th2e Wubi Guide (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide), and I've followed the instructions for "How can I access my Wubi install and repair my install if it won't boot?", but that reveals no problems.For the record, I'm fairly new to linux and ubuntu, but I'm good with computers generally. The main operating system on my computer is Windows Vista, but I'm currently typing this from a Live CD of Ubuntu 9.10. The virtual disk (root.disk), is currently mounted as vdisk, as indicated in the Wubi Guide.
Ideally I would like to get Ubuntu to load as it used to (with a menu). However, if there is a way to boot from the GRUB command line that would be good too. I'm not at all familiar with GRUB, and the commands I've tried (boot and linux, I think), get errors saying no kernel specified, or loaded, or something like that.
Is running a command in the Alt+F2 prompt possible in a bash script?I need this for a launcher for gnome-shell.For it I have written a little script to check if the process gnome-shell is alive and act accordingly.The script works fine, I just don't know how to write "debugexit" to the Alt+F2 prompt, as that is the only decent way I have found to shut gnome-shell down and going back to gdm desktop smoothly.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi wonder if it is usual that the results of running commands via the command line is different from running them in a script file. my problem is that, i've to run 'modprobe -r e100' and 'modprobe e100' before suspend my machine via pmi in order to resume it properly. i wrote a script containg EXACTLY the same commands as i typed in the terminal/console but the result was not the same. the machine cannot be resumed as expected if i run the script file.

I used the command: whereis mysql
I found out it was in /usr/bin/mysql /usr/lib/mysql /usr/share/mysql ../man/man1/.gz
I attempted to execute it from root.. bin and I get the following error message:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket 'var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'
I haven't recompiled ny kernel in a while, but whenever I did it, it was all pretty easy. Make menuconfig; (adjust); make && make modules_install, and copy over bzImage in */arch/* and System.map to /boot and stick in new entry into grub menu.lst.However, this time, I must be missing something, because I get kernel panic on booting up to the new kernel. Is there a step I'm missing?Certainly, I was looking in /etc/rc.d and there is a rc.modules<kernelver> script in there. I wondered if I need make a new one ... although when I looked over it, it seem only to be required when forcing particular modules.

At the moment ubuntu 11.04 should be installed although it gave me a ton of errors as I installed it and as soon as i restarted the computer i got this prompt.

After rebooting I get a shell window with no frame in the top-left corner of the screen with the Ubuntu loading screen still taking up the rest of the screen. Typing 'startx' gave a error that there is already a display running on the port.

I have it set up to be accessed via outside IPs and when I use a client on the IP I have it connects normally using Filezilla client. On the same machine I have Ubuntu running in a virtual box and when using filezilla client in there it works fine. Now I want to try the command prompt. So I do the ftp xxx.xxx.xx.xxI enter the name and password and i get the ftp command prompt, but the commands are not working properly. when trying "ls" or "cd" these commands do not work. "cd" tells me that the current directory is "/" root, but this does not make sense in the windows operating system. Now the filezilla client is taking the user in the application window directly to the root folder of the permitted filespace granted to that user. How can the same be done from the command prompt, if there is a way? It is as if the command prompt takes me to the root which does not exist or even have correct permissions to move in. Is there any way to be taken to the correct directory directly, or move there especially when the slashes are the wrong way around etc?

Now the first one contains bind utils the second one is for running DNS in a chroot env and the last one is a bind with some DB backend.
Does this mean that fedora 13 doesn't support/.provide "standard" bind server (I mean the one to run without chroot/without db backend) ? Or am I missing anything in my repolist which is :
I presume there is something in the JWM window manager - or Puppy Linux Lupu 5.01 itself that is conflicting with the normal loading of GMPLAYER....
I would like to know how to troubleshoot, and fix this problem if possible (even a workaround would be great).
I'm using 'Adobe Flash plug-in 10.3.183.4ubuntu0.11.04.1', installed from the package repos on kubuntu, and since the last update, it has broken all flash functionality in both rekonq and firefox.I have tried removing and reinstalling the package multiple times, both with and without the browsers open. Can anyone suggest a way to restoring functionality?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a PDF that I built using BIRT, and that works fine. At this point I'm trying to print it using lpr or some other command. It seems as though I should just be able to type lpr invoice.pdf and it should print to the default printer. However, lpstat -t shows "Empty print file!" for the printer, and the printer doesn't do anything, let alone print the file. lpr -l invoice.pdf prints the file, but unformatted - just a bunch of characters and whitespace on a seemingly infinite number of pages.

I have a laptop that doesn't display correctly since installing F10 x86-64. Instead of using the i810 driver, I see the experimental intel driver. I am running on a Dell D630 laptop with the default intel integrated graphics.
Just to note: Running gnome. I tried KDE and I can actually get this to work and display in 1600x1200. I don't want, "well use kde then" to be the solution. Also, in gnome, if I go to the screen resolution option from the menu, the mirron screens is clicked. Even when I detect monitors and unselect the mirror screens and pick the correct resolution, when I click OK, the screen flickers, and I go back to the same screen with the original default values? Wierd.
I got the bright idea to install system-config-display (something like that), which installed fine. I then changed my default resolution to 800x640 just to try it (really want 1600x1200). Well, I decided to reboot. Not the laptop doesn't start, it stops right after loading anaconda, and just won't go any further.
So two questions:
1. What do I need to change to get the laptop to actually boot?
2. How to get the external monitor to display in 1600x1200.
When running a program that has infinite loops in the terminal , how to bring back the command prompt ? ( I'm using Fedora core 5 )
View 7 Replies View Relatedi m trying to modify an Ubuntu install CD for a (nearly) hands-off installation experience. I have almost everything working the way that I want except for one thing: Choosing the keyboard.
1) I can boot the CD
2) I am asked, via what looks like a grey GUI menu, which language I want.
Problem #1: I don't know how to bypass this and force the menu to accept "English". 3) I have added my own label to isolinux/txt.cfg for my installation, and it shows up on the install CD menu: "Install NIMBioS Enterprise"; and it's highlighted by default. 4) I press RETURN to begin the installation. Problem #2: For some reason, the installer displays the "Ubuntu installer main menu", with "Configure the keyboard" highlighted. During a regular, unmodified installation the installer automatically goes into the "Configure the Keyboard" without me having to select it from this menu. I'm not sure why this is the case. 5) I press RETURN to select "Configure the keyboard" Problem #3: I am then asked, "Country of origin for the keyboard". No matter what I try as a preseed argument in txt.cfg, I can't make this go away. 6) Press RETURN to accept "USA", and everything else goes on automatic. Here is the contents of my isolinux/txt.cfg file:

I just installed a fresh version of fedora 11, and it went extremely smooth, except for one thing; I opened up firefox and it was at the fedora start page with a google search, i typed text into the search box, hit enter, and got a infamous "This page cannot be displayed" error.I have checked my connection, turned off the firewall, and rebooted the system. The problem still persists. I have no idea what is going on, it says i'm connected, I can do a software update which has to go through the internet connection, but for some reason, firefox doesn't want me to go anywhere besides fedoraproject.org.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have Update Manager set to check for updates on a daily basis but to prompt me before downloading or installing them. Because I have Update Manager set to check on a Daily basis, I expect that I will receive a prompt that an update is available no later than the day after the update is available (assuming of course I have my computer turned on). Yet I only receive a prompt days or even a week after the update was made available.
For example, let's say that my PPA of Google Chrome issues an update on Tuesday. Despite the fact that my ubuntu computer was on for a couple hours in the morning on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, no update prompt appears alerting me to available updates. If I manually open Update Manager on Friday afternoon, then the update is there and waiting for installation. But how come I don't get an automatic prompt that an update is available? Do I have my settings wrong or something?

I noticed that this appears to be an old bug come back to life again, but the fix to it was never revealed.
I just upgraded my fedora 13 to fedora 14. I changed the cpu and the motherboard so i had to install from scratch...but I saved my iptables.
The problem is that
I do all the suff
service iptables save
And apparently it works...
But everytime I reboot I have to re run the script to forward Internet...Everything else works just fine...I mean I can ssh, vnc, etc but wont forward intel :S dont know why?
