Ubuntu Installation :: Version 10.04 Broken During Software Install

Mar 25, 2011

I did a very noobish thing and broke my 10.04 installation and need help to pull it back from the brink. I began an install of LAMP using tasksel. Ignorantly I unchecked two pre selected packages - ubuntu desktop and a print related one whose name I can't recall. During the install I noticed that the installer was merrily uninstalling a whole bunch of stuff. Read later that if you uncheck the preselected options it actually uninstalls them. Perfect. Second foolish action was that in a panic to stop what I thought was a total wipe of my ubuntu installation, I just turned off the computer.

on bootup it first just hung with a black screen. Tried to repair with a live CD but got an 'unrecoverable error' message. Managed to get a bit of life with purging then reinstalling ubuntu-desktop but still hangs on bootup showing the ubuntu symbol and progress bar. So I have accessed via a Grub2 disk and logged in, in a 'low graphics' mode - actually no graphics. am using aptitude to see what the state of things is, but can't get a connection to any repositories. 'Temporary failture resolving '[URL]...etc with [ERROR] Have had a look at /ect/apat/sources.list and it's still all there. But I am basically stumped as to what to do next. Pretty sure most things are still there. And really don't want to do a fresh install. So actually what i need to do is sort out why I don't have a connection anymore.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install 64-bit Version Or 32-bit Version With PAE?

Oct 10, 2010

my laptop currently has 8GB of RAM and I wouldn't want that going to waste. I have read about the issues with flash on the 64 bit versions of buntu. Would you recommend going 64-bit or 32-bit with PAE? also, does the 10.10 kernel have PAE enabled by default?

Ubuntu Installation :: Wubi Broken By UNR Install

Dec 14, 2010

wanted to install UNR 10.04 proper, dropping WUBI. I figured I'd move my home folder and installed apps from wubi to the regular partition from inside the wubi install, after installing UNR and it's bootloader on a partition. The Wubi install no longer works, trying to boot it hangs at mounting a no longer existant logical partition. That partition used to be ntfs storage, now becoming the proper UNR partition.Wubi's Grub actually says it's not a NTFS partition anymore and hangs there.Would reinstalling Wubi from Windows (keeping the disks folder) solve anything? Is there anything I can do from Wubi Grub's command line?

Ubuntu Installation :: Ktorrent Dependencies Broken - Cannot Install

Apr 16, 2011

I have Ktorrent installed via the repositories and its always worked perfectly. Today I ran software update with KPackageKit and it installed updates. It told me that KTorrent had to be removed to continue and without thinking I hit ok. Now my KTorrent is gone. When I try to install it on the terminal with

Code:

sudo apt-get install ktorrent

it gives me this error.

Code:

$ sudo apt-get install ktorrent
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done

[code]...

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

ktorrent : Depends: ktorrent-data (= 4.0.3-0ubuntu1) but 4.0.5-3ubuntu1~maverick1~ppa1 is to be installed

E: Broken packages If I remove and reinstall ktorrent-data it doesn't help. build-dep doesn't help. autoremove and then trying to reinstall doesn't help. I'm not running some strange dev version of anything. I have a standard Kubuntu 10.10 amd64 installation and my KDE version is 4.6.2 from the regular repositories. I run updates (standard repositories) almost every day and have never seen anything like this before.

Ubuntu :: Installation Broken After Trying To Install Proprietary GPU Driver?

Jul 19, 2011

My laptop runs really hot and after reading a few threads around the forum I came across one that said it was because of the fact that ubuntu comes with an open source driver. All you have to do is update to the proprietary driver and everything is fixed. So I went to the menu and looked for the driver. I honestly didn't check if the one that was found was compatible with my graphics card, I just assumed that the one that it found was the right one. I installed it and restarted and ubuntu wouldn't load. It goes through the initial load but when it comes time to bring up the login page, it stays black and never advances. I assumed that this was a result of an incorrect driver. Again, I turned to the forums and found that other people had this problem. So I grabbed my trusty live CD and tried to load up a live session and remove the config file that points to the driverThe live CD wouldn't load. Same thing for recovery mode. It gets to a certain point and stops. This link is an image to where the boot stops:

Fedora Installation :: F10 Network Install Is Broken

Mar 27, 2009

I downloaded the ISO for the network install and burned and booted it just fine. It detected my network card and got a valid ip.When it goes to actually start to install it gives an error saying:cannot retrieve repository metadata and makes mention of some file called repomd.xml

I put the url listed into my browser and it listed all the mirrors and I checked a few of the mirrors to see if they were up and they were. What gives with this? Why doesn't the network installer find the repositories properly?

Debian Multimedia :: MPlayer Broken - Incompatible With Version Of FFMPEG

May 11, 2010

I received a few updates today, one of which is mplayer. Now mplayer is broken and from what I can gather it's because it's incompatible with the version of ffmpeg I have installed. But the real problem is that mplayer and ffmpeg were originally installed from the debian-multimedia repo but the update for mplayer is from the debian repo. I can't go back because this new mplayer is dependent on libdirectfb-1.2-9 whereas mplayer from debian-multimedia is dependent on libdirectfb-1,2-0.

In case you want the error from mplayer:
mplayer: relocation error: mplayer: symbol codec_wav_tags, version LIBAVFORMAT_52 not defined in file libavformat.so.52 with link time reference

OpenSUSE Network :: Is Qinternet Or Smpppd Broken In 11.3 Final Version

Aug 3, 2010

I wished to use qinternet under openSUSE 11.3 to control multiple interfaces (a mixture of internet/intranet, DHCP/static IP), so I applied the same settings/tests which were successful for kinternet under open/SUSE 11.2: Selected options within Yast2/Network Settings: Traditional Method with ifupEnable Device Control for Non-root User Via QinternetYast2/System/System Services(RunLevel)/smpppd = "yes" From command line terminal:

[Code]....

Default state indicated by different icons. Interface option brought up by right-mouse-clicking on the qinternet/kinternet panel icon and choosing Settings/Various Settings/Startup tab. Note: Regardless of whether qinternet was running or not, internet communications via the relevant network interface still worked.

In case the failure of qinternet/smpppd was simply a PolicyKit issue, I edited /etc/PolicyKit/PolicyKit.conf to ensure that the relevant user had the necessary privilege to run smpppd (I assume that qinternet can be ignored since it is just the front end for smpppd) e.g.

[Code]....

This made no difference, SO FOR DIAGNOSTIC PURPOSES ONLY, I logged in as root after first removing the power from the network switches externally connected to each network interface (isolating the local host). I then ran qinternet but once again, the Interface option was greyed out. This confirmed fairly conclusively that lack of privilege was not responsible for the qinternet/smpppd problem.

Debian Installation :: Broken Grub Bootloader After Install On USB Flash Drive

Nov 11, 2015

I have an issue after the installation of debian 8.2 on an usb flash drive:

I had debian 8.2 and windows 8.1 running on a single SSD. Everything was fine. I wanted to install a second debian on a 32gb USB flash drive as a live system. After the installation I am not able to boot my debian (SSD) without the flash drive plugged in. I only get a grub rescue prompt. Booting windows still works. It is also possible to boot both debian systems if the USB drive is plugged in.

So it seems to me, that the debian bootloader was accidently installed to the USB flash drive and the original bootloader on the SSD does not work properly anymore. I used a netinst image from a second USB flash drive to install debian to the first USB flash drive.

Update fdisk output:

/dev/sda1 2048 2050047 2048000 1000M Windows recovery environment
/dev/sda2 2050048 2582527 532480 260M EFI System

I guess that there should be able to install an older version of g++ in addition to the current g++. Furthermore, the current should be the default, while the older is an optional version.

Feb 14, 2010

I have an HP EVO W6000 Workstation: Dual 2.2 Xeon Processors with 2 Gigs of Rambus Memory with 120 gig IDE HD and a DVD/RW IDE Burner. It is a 32bit Workstation. I just downloaded the 9.10 ISO of Ubuntu and created the CD. When putting the CD into the PC it will boot to the CD and the Ubuntu screen appears giving me the choices on how do I want to install Ubuntu but when I choose Install Ubuntu and hit enter nothing happens at all. It will let me boot to the HD but there is nothing on the drive. It is a clean HD with nothing on it. I'm not dual booting with another OS Like Windoze. I'm just want to install Ubuntu on this PC all by itself. I am using the 32bit version of Ubuntu since my workstation only supports a 32bit OS.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install 10.10 Desktop Version

Nov 4, 2010

I'm trying to install the desktop version on my laptop but i'm having an issues. I wrote the .iso file on a CD and restart my pc to boot. So -> the pc founds the medium, i'm choosing the language, i'm choosing "Install ubuntu" and nothing happens. The dots srarts to blink and that's all. When i press anykey opens an cmd promt (something like that) and there's a lot of errors - for example: ... file failed to open due to unknown user id", some files are missing and so on. I tried "try ubuntu without installing" but the same thing. I hear a sound (i guess this the "srart sound" of ubuntu) and that's all. The orange screen, the icon in the middle and the blinking dots. I made two CDs - one burned with win 7 integrated soft - right click and "burn disk image", and other burned with infra recorder. Nothing changes.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Even Install 10.10 (or Any Other Version Or Distro)

Dec 7, 2010

I'm using 3 monitors over a pci-e 9800GT and an agp 7600GS and have no problems under Windows 7, except i can't have Ubuntu (which i really miss). I tried installing Ubuntu and pretty much every other distribution multiple times.. with no luck so far. Wubi, CD, USB.. none of them worked for me. Right before the first step in the installation, all the screens go haywire, displaying all kinds of shapes and colors and everything seems frozen.

None of this ever happened back when i only had 2 screens and i really need the 3rd one (actually thinking of a 4th since i got a slot left.. maybe for movies or stuff while i'm working). I found topics of people with similar problems, only they were reffering to whatever happens while inside ubuntu or whatever.
