Debian Installation :: Broken Grub Bootloader After Install On USB Flash Drive

Nov 11, 2015

I have an issue after the installation of debian 8.2 on an usb flash drive:

I had debian 8.2 and windows 8.1 running on a single SSD. Everything was fine. I wanted to install a second debian on a 32gb USB flash drive as a live system. After the installation I am not able to boot my debian (SSD) without the flash drive plugged in. I only get a grub rescue prompt. Booting windows still works. It is also possible to boot both debian systems if the USB drive is plugged in.

So it seems to me, that the debian bootloader was accidently installed to the USB flash drive and the original bootloader on the SSD does not work properly anymore. I used a netinst image from a second USB flash drive to install debian to the first USB flash drive.

Update fdisk output:

/dev/sda1 2048 2050047 2048000 1000M Windows recovery environment
/dev/sda2 2050048 2582527 532480 260M EFI System

Debian Installation :: Install Live To A 4 GB Flash Drive?

Apr 12, 2011

I am trying to install Debian Live to a 4 GB flash drive. I am using UNetBootin to extract this (debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso) file to a FAT32 partition on my flash drive. It installs fine, and shows me the SysLinux menu fine, but when i choose live(or anything else) it says"Invalid or Corrupt Kernel Image". I also tryed these other installers. pendrivelinux's Universal USB Installer. It gives me the same message. win32diskimager gives me a different Debian menu, but the same problem. Does anyone know what is wrong, and how to fix it. It is driving me nuts!

Software :: Problem With Installing Debian Onto External Hard Drive/grub Bootloader Error "21"

Jul 10, 2009

I've been running Debian Lenny kernel 2.6.26 w/ desktop kde3.5 on my laptop for a while, and im going to take a trip in which i will be unable to take wmy laptop with me. However, where i am going contains computers and i figured if i could install debian onto my external harddrive, i could just boot onto the other computers. I install it using the debianlenny-i386 dvd image. However whenever I try to boot it from a computer. Grub returns

Code:
Grub Loading...
Error 21
and then the blinkng cursor. On one site i found something saying "you may need to activat the drive" and some command-line instructions on how to do it. However the commands have faded from memory and i am now unable to find that site again. Could anyone offer insight on how to fix this "grub error 21" or how to activate it. I run primarily debian but i have a windows partition on one of my relative's computers.
Thank you in advance for the help!!!
btw I'm installing on a western digital 500gb "passport" external hard drive with ext3 and swap partitions.

OpenSUSE Install :: Bootloader Fails To Install(grub Cannot Install Bootloader)?

Nov 7, 2010

I have a major problem installing opensuse 11.3 on my computer( hp pavilion dv6).I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-x86_64 from software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.3 and made a live usb.I'm a newbie at using linux infact i never used another operating system beside windows. Now i have installed windows 7 (on c disk 100gb).My first problem when i am trying to install opensuse is that he dosn't automatic choose to make my partitions so i have to do it manualy.I was searching how to make it the best way so i desited to make 4 partitons one for ' /boot' one for ' / 'one for '/home' and a swap partition/In windows7 i made 4 new partitons

3:10 gb for /boot
4:10 gb for/
5:70 gb for /user
6:10 gb for /swap

My first question is :Is this right to make 4 paritions in windows (opensuse can't format or resize my partitions it just can edit it ) so it's my only way to make partitions( If this is wrong how can i make partitions then)

My second question is how to change the bootloader configurtation because everytime when ii try to install opensuse it stops at about 96% and it says to reconfigure the bootloader options.

If i skip this i get the folowing message

=== System Checking ===
Checking for /usr/bin/chroot binary... Passed
Checking for chroot directory /mnt... Passed
Checking for chroot directory content (bin
boot
Checking for binary /mnt/bin/ls... Passed
Trying to chroot... Failed

This is worth reporting a bug at url.

Debian Installation :: Grub Bootloader Only Show Kali Linux To Choose From - Screen Not Allowing To Boot From CD

Nov 29, 2014

Basically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...

I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.

If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...

I can not boot from cd or usb!

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot With Debian - Write /dev/sda1 To The Bootloader Rather Than /dev/hda1 Using Grub-mkconfig?

Aug 19, 2010

I installed Debian on my PC and then installed Ubuntu. This worked fine and I could dual boot between the two. The PATA disk was /dev/hda on debian and (I think) /dev/sda on Ubuntu. I copied the entire disk to a sata disk using dd from knoppix and put the PATA one to one side. Now the Ubuntu comes up fine but when I boot debian, it complains about references to /dev/hda1, which is present in grub - root=/dev/hda1. Debian now expects sda references rather than hda references. How do I persuade Ubuntu to write /dev/sda1 to the bootloader rather than /dev/hda1 using grub-mkconfig?

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot From Flash Drive 10.10 Grub Rescue?

Oct 24, 2010

First time poster and recent Ubuntu adopter. I recently installed 10.10 on my main HD alongside a separate windows (xp) partition (it worked perfectly). Then I decided to get fancy and installed 10.10 to a flash drive directly from a live cd. I attempted to boot from the flash drive, and got a black screen with a blinking underscore for about 10 minutes, then I forcefully rebooted. Now, whenever I attempt to boot at all from my main HD I get "error: no such device and a ton of misc numbers. And the flash drive will not allow me to boot from it. Currently, I'm working within the Live CD.

I have a few projects I need to complete with Dreamweaver inside XP, so recovering it completely would be nice.

Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in partition #1 for (,msdos1)/boot/grub.

Debian Installation :: UEFI GRUB Broken - Dual Boot 7.7 And Win 8.1

Dec 23, 2014

My Toshiba Satellite C870-198 has Debian 7.7 installed in UEFI mode alongside Windows 8.1. The GRUB menu no longer displays, but the machine boots straight into Windows.

I can boot into Debian or Windows from rEFInd installed on a USB stick. The rEFInd menu has the following entries:

The Debian entry actually launches the GRUB menu which was installed with Debian.

Code: Select allBoot Microsoft EFI boot (Boot Repair backup) from Basic data partition.
Boot supposed Microsoft EFI boot (probably GRUB) from Basic data partition.
Boot EFIubuntugrubx64.efi from Basic data partition.
Boot EFIdebiangrubx64.efi from Basic data partition.
Boot bootootx64.efi from Basic data partition.
Boot vmlinuz-3.2.0-4-amd64 from boot.

In an attempt to fix GRUB I executed the commands in the 'Reinstalling grub-efi on your hard drive' section of: [URL] ....

Code: Select allmount /dev/sda1 /boot/efi
... surprisingly returned:
Code: Select all$LogFile version 2.0 is not supported.  (This driver supports version 1.1 only.)
$LogFile version 2.0 is not supported.  (This driver supports version 1.1 only.)
Did not find any restart pages in $LogFile and it was not empty.
The file system wasn't safely closed on Windows. Fixing.
Code: Select all[ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo "EFI boot on HDD" || echo "Legacy boot on HDD"

... returned "EFI boot on HDD".

[Code] ....

... Where is Debian?

FULL HISTORY ....
=============================

The laptop came with Windows 8 preinstalled. I switched off Secure Boot and installed Ubuntu for UEFI dual boot. I recall having to use Boot Repair to get the GRUB boot manager working properly for both systems.

Recently I decided to replace Ubuntu with Debian 7.7 and first cloned the entire hard drive to a USB drive (The Clone Drive). This drive successfully boots into Ubuntu in UEFI mode.

Following this I took the opportunity to update Windows to 8.1, which broke GRUB as expected, so that the machine would only boot straight into Windows.

I installed Debian from a live USB stick in the mistaken belief that it would be bootable in UEFI mode. It did boot OK in legacy mode.

I then burned the full Debian 'DVD' image to a USB stick, booted it in UEFI mode and reinstalled Debian. In UEFI mode GRUB allowed me to boot into both Debian and Windows.

At this point I tested The Clone Drive. It was still able to boot into Ubuntu as previously, but after powering down, unplugging The Clone Drive and rebooting, the GRUB menu failed to appear and the machine booted straight into Windows. This is its current state.

Debian Installation :: Broken Grub After Wheezy To Jessie Upgrade

Jun 2, 2015

I've changed my /etc/apt/sources.lst file to use "jessie" repositories instead of "wheezy". I then ran synaptic and updated everything (there were loads of packages, something like 2000 to update).

After this I rebooted. The grub menu shows as usual with the background image I'd set and the operating systems as usual (including Windows 7) however there is no longer a 5 second countdown and when I select *any* menu option, it asks for a username and password.

I don't know what username and password it's asking for as I never used to have one set!!! I did have a username and password set up so that if you wanted to edit a grub menu option so I tried that but to no avail.

I'm using MBR/BIOS not EFI.

Debian :: Rebuild Lost Bootloader Flash

Aug 29, 2015

I use a usb flash stick for bootloader and /boot. Debian resides on sdaX and is LUKS encrypted (in fact LVM on LUKs). I am trying to learn how to use the Deb LIVE disk with rescue mode to re-build the bootloader and /boot on a fresh different flash drive. As a learning tool I want to approach this task as described. I have full access to a perfectly running system at this point, but I want to learn this process knowing eventually something will go "bump in the night". I did a custom install so I am aware of how this works generally speaking.

I have password access to the LUKS volume and can easily open it at the LIVE disk prompt to do so. My new flash drive is wiped and EXT2 formatted and should be ready to go. I have RAM based backup software for doing sector backups of the LUKS partition/volume. Doing a full restore at any point will be a piece of cake. I have lots of family around and the thought of a missing bootloader flash drive, while not likely, is not out of question.

General :: GRUB-2 Bootloader Fails To Load For Lack Of Floppy Drive?

Jul 21, 2010

2010.07.21 while trying to install Ubuntu 10.4 I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell workstation and am unable to get the Grub-2 bootloader to load properly. It seems to be failing for lack of a floppy drive on the system resulting in an error message that reads : error: fd0 cannot get C/H/S values.

I've gone through the Grub-2 page at [URL].. to no avail and other sources having similar problems have likewise turned up no solutions. here's the background: A while back I was trying to install a different version of Linux and had the same problems, then had to set the project aside for a bit. I don't think this has anything to do with Linux or Ubuntu per se, but rather Grub.

The system is an old (4-5 years) Dell workstation that has one drive (128 GB) set up for Windows XP and a second new drive (500GB) which I installed for Linux. There is a DVD/CD drive and the system contains no floppy drive at all. In one attempt to get this working I tried modifying the BIOS to indicate there was a floppy drive - this created a failure earlier in the chain with the BIOS failing to load properly, not unexpected, just a shot in the dark at that point.

At the moment I am considering just running out to buy and install a cheap floppy drive to see if that helps. I'll never use the thing though so I'd rather find a solution that doesn't require me to spend money on useless hardware. In any case, here's the /boot/grub/grub.cfg contents:

# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
#
# It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates
# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub
#
### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/00_header ###

It just tells me that I entered the incorrect password.

Fedora Installation :: How To Install On A Flash Drive

May 5, 2009

I'm interested in trying out Fedora but would use it on my current Netbook (an ASUS eeePC 1000HE). I currently have Mandriva on it though which I don't want to stop using. Can I install it on a Flash Drive? If so, would it be in a sense a LiveDVD type of installation or could I actually do an install on the Flash Drive to use it as a Hard Drive? If so, what would the minimum flash drive size be?

Also, if I use the Flash Drive as a hard drive would it still have to use the internal hard drive or can all 3 partitions (swap, root, and home), be on the flash drive? Would it be possible to run it on more than one machine since I also have an Acer Aspire One?

Fedora Installation :: USB Flash Drive Install?

Jan 10, 2011

I downloaded the 32 bit Fedora 14 and burned the image to DVD. I didn't want to try to install it on the HDD because the last time I tried to install a distro that used Grub and not Grub2, the only OS I could get into from the boot screen was that OS that I installed with Grub.

I went ahead with the install in hopes that it would see my 4G flash drive, sdc was present so that is where I installed it. I mounted / in sdc1 and the bootloader in sdc. Everything seemed to install, install finished and said I could reboot. On reboot it tried to boot from the USB but just sat there, it never did boot.

Debian Installation :: Add Partition To USB Flash Drive Bootable Installer

May 19, 2015

I created a bootable Debian installer on my USB flash drive. The Debian Installation Guide advises;

The hybrid image on the stick does not occupy all the storage space, so it may be worth considering using the free space to hold firmware files or packages or any other files of your choice. This could be useful if you have only one stick or just want to keep everything you need on one device. Create a second, FAT partition on the stick, mount the partition and copy or unpack the firmware onto it.

I want to put non free firmware packages on the stick but when I try to create a FAT partition in the free space using Disk Utility I get the following error;

Error creating partition: helper exited with exit code 1: In part_add_partition: device_file=/dev/sdb, start=661837824, size=7507093504, type=
Entering MS-DOS parser (offset=0, size=8168931328)
MSDOS_MAGIC found
looking at part 0 (offset 0, size 657457152, type 0x00)
new part entry

[Code] ....

I formatted the drive to clear it, created a new FAT partition and copied the Debian.iso to it again. When I tried again to create a partition in the free space the same error occurred.
