View 1 RepliesI recently installed F13 on my Toshiba Satellite C650. It has a buggy ACPI which no linux distro till date supports. I got that covered though. But my problem is that the ethernet port works only if the kernel is >=2.34. But F13 came with 2.33.
I do not have an access to a wireless network. Please tell me how to update the kernel without connecting to internet directly. I am new to Fedora. I have been using Ubuntu for some time and this can be achived in ubuntu by downloading the DEB packages and dependencies.
My router malfunctioned after a weird lightning strikes scenario so i tried connecting directly to the modem, i cant connect on my ubuntu desktop so itried connecting using my laptop with windows 7 and gets connected

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was trying out the fedora live cd but I couldn't get my Internet to work. When I open firefox it always said server not kind no matter what I searched or put into the address bar:
I tried many different things but none o them worked
I am able to ping m router an I'm able to login to my routers page
I am also able to login to my modems page and it says connected to the Internet
I tried restarting the modem and the router but I still got the same problem
I also tried disabling the firewall but still had the same problem
I tried a command and I was able to receive packets from google.com, but It never went through in firefox
I also tried out a torrent (I had it saved on a USB) and it worked it was downloading fine
I am able to ping googles web page but I am not able to search anything.
In firefox preferences and in network proxy I tried many different proxy settings bit none o them worked I always get the message server not found. All this was done while connected directly with Ethernet cable modem and router but untried wireless and it didn't work either on the top right corner of the screen the network icon says auto eth0 active. I'm using fedora 12 livecd.
The problem was finding an applet to browse directory tree directly in the Gnome panel similar to that in "Recent Documents". The thread was closed without any solution posted there and also no solution available elsewhere (I searched for over 2 hours) in the forum.
Search for "file-browser-applet" in the Synaptic Package Manager. The applet with exactly that name is what you need. It allows to browse and open files on your computer from the GNOME panel. Once installed, "Add to panel".
venturing into unfamiliar territory so I'm hoping someone can help me and make things a little more understandable for me. I have setup Postfix on a standalone server connected directly to the internet. I have got inbound and outbound email working for the most part, but I am worried about security. My fear is that if I leave port 25 open to the outside world spammers will find this and start relaying mail through it and eventually blacklisting the IP attached to this box.
For now, I am hosting mail for a single domain and single user (me) with a few aliases. I plan on expanding to IMAP and SMTP access from the outside at some point, but for now I've been using Mutt in a shell and it's fine for my needs for now.
Here are my current Postfix settings:
alias_database = hash:/etc/aliases
alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases

I have windows 7 and ubuntu on same machine, it's Acer aspire 7736. First it was just the 7, then i installed ubuntu 10.10 beta, then updated a month before this moment and never use it sins yesterday. Everything was working fine, i just cant get the sound to work, but this is another thing. When i ran the Ubuntu yesterday the updates was unable to install, Firefox is not working(waiting for google.com, for example), but i can log in to skype with no problem at all, the torrents are working great...

This is from windows 7 local internet connections.
On default, before i do anything on the network in ubuntu it was Automatic DHCP.
I have router, but i never had to do any manual adjustments on windows or ubuntu before. They just found my internet connection and everything worked great. I use cable internet.
I have been using 10.04 since quite a long time now. and everything was working smooth until last update and all of a sudden my firefox and chrome are slow, really slow on internet. At first I could not believe that ubuntu could be so slow so I called my ISP provider and fight with them. later on I found that my XP runs fast, and Finally the problem is on my ubuntu system. I looked online and disabled my ipv6 but still the issue is not solved. I even tried openDNS and that did not help. What's going on on recent update?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought new PC, I installed Ubuntu 10.04 then installed updates. Will there be any problem for not installing regular updates? Because I will not using internet. Can I update Ubuntu offline?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been running 10.04 since it came out basically and my internet connection has been fine. After I got the last set of updates that came up on the update manager (which if I remember mainly contained an updated version of the latest kernel and a couple other files) my internet connection speed went from a decent browsing speed and file transfer speeds between 80-200kbps to an almost dialup browsing speed to file transfer speeds of a about 7.5kbps its very significant and very annoying it took 20 minutes just to make this post.
Also I've already tried changing my ipv6 settings.
I am an ubuntu user, and i have a problem ,since a couple of days i cannot conect to the internet in my home, i am a student an i live on campus, every time that i try to conect my computer from my linux partition the internet browser (every web browser, i have tried, explorer, chrome, chrominium, firefox and epiphany)show an error, it say that i need an upgrade for my web browser and ask me to download a file named as update.exe.But in my windows partition everithing goes perfect, even if i use the wireless conection from my college ubuntu doesnot show this problem.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI can't tell if its my computer or just the internet? I'm just running the GUI Update Manager.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI tried to download some software from the Ubuntu software center, and it does not download. It does not give me an error message, it just stays at 0 bytes. It eventually tells me to check my internet connection. (this does not make sense because I am using it to write this thread) I checked synaptic package manager for correct proxy settings and it was ok. I ran
Code:
sudo apt-get update
but to no avail. I am using wireless, and recently dissembled the computer to disconnect the CMOS battery, but I think that it was put back together properly.
All of a sudden Update Manager cannot connect to Internet. I just recently fixed a problem I had with playdeb not installing the games due to a internet connection problem (fixed by downloading the script instead of terminal method), this is the only big change I done recently other than downloading documents and pictures.
Here is the detail as to where or why it cannot connect code...
Not sure this right place for this. After updating from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 lost internet connection - was instantaneous loss. Wired connection computer to router. Icon on computer shows "wired connection 'auto Eth0'active" The router shows line connected ok. Computer shows connection is established. Connection information menu shows details such as IP address broadcast address and other details. Where do I go from here to reconnect to internet.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been connecting to the Internet via Ubuntu 8.10 on my Toshiba laptop fine for ages now, but today it has stopped working. Yesterday an update came through relating to DHCP and, like all other updates, I installed it. And now my laptop can see the wireless router but it cannot connect to the Internet. (As I always install the recommended Ubuntu updates I didn't look closely at exactly what the update said, but I did see DHCP in the title, so this is why I suspect my connection is now broken.) Or can anyone tell me how to undo yesterday's update? I really wish now that Ubuntu had a utility similar to Windows System Restore.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe server connects fine, I can load pages, FTP in, etc. So everything seems good on that end. When I try to use the internet from the Ubuntu box, however, it doesn't seem to want to connect. The internet won't load through firefox, and attempting to update through the repository won't connect. I've tried playing around with refreshing the connection and rebooting and such, but nothing seems to be fixing this. I can't think of what the issue may be as the connection is working, as I can get on the server, but can't seem to get it to connect outward from the actual box.

i'm realatively new to linux am just getting my head around the command line, any way my problem today is, my network connection and networkmanger program have been deleted/uninstalled after i did a system update. im running ubuntu 10.04 32 bit. I have run of some commands which should be able to tell you whats going on. at the moment i'm using a live ubuntu cd to gain net access.
so the question is How do i restore my network connection and get my networkmanager program back without a internet connection. (i can download stuff to a memory stick and do manual install) Hope someone can shed some light on this, i know this topic has been covered before although each case seems slightly different to mine.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Fedora 10. After the installation I was able browse the Internet. However, I did a update: yum update and downloaded 287 updates. However, when I rebooted I could no longer connect to the Internet. I went to network manager and looked at the details of my connection. Everything ok there. IP address, DNS, etc. However, I cannot connect. I have windows xp running on the same system. I can still connect, so there is nothing wrong with my Internet connection.I am using Fedora 10 2.6.27.12-170 There is one thing I have noticed when I shutdown is I see this: "Network manager Int PIC disabled" However, this is only displayed for a few seconds before the computer swiches off.
