View 3 Replies View RelatedI had 10.04 I believe and I really don't use Ubuntu that often and have Windows 7 as my primary OS. I decided to boot into Ubuntu and it checked for updates, I said yes to all and it rebooted. Thats where it messed up. Now when I try to boot, it gives me my options: Windows 7 and Ubuntu as usual but once I select Ubuntu, it flashes a screen (I think it says unknown command, I might be wrong) and restarts again... and it keeps on doing the same thing over and over. It doesn't even let me get into safe mode. Would I have to do a new install?

I got it when I tried reducing the GRUB_TIMEOUT from the code above. I feel so furious now because I knew it was a bad idea to fix something that isn't broke. Can my Wubi install still be saved?
I didn't like the white on black grub menu, found it hard to read. so modified the /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme

I have found that by typing "startx" I am able to load up the GUI. Is there a way I can get it to start like this every time?I used to get the GUI login screen but I don't anymore. View 5 Replies View RelatedI changed the first line of /etc/fstab in an attempt to get rid of an annoying message "mount: unknown filesystem type 'static'". All I did was put a "#" on the first line .... changing the original from:

to:

I have tried desperately to get to the file system so that I can edit that first line in fstab out but nothing works and the file system comes up as read only ...
just tried downloading the latest version of ubuntu and install it on my laptop got an error message at the end of the installation (an I/O error, dev sr0,sector something) now when booting i got grub rescue. the only command working are ls and set. commands such as 'linux' or 'boot' show 'unkown command'
typing
ls (hd0,1) or ls /boot/
results in
unknown filesystem
I tried to reinstall grub using the 3 different methods as in [URL] got no error message while doing so except when typing sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda it told me something about being unable to locate ubuntu or something along those lines - sorry i thought i'd remember .. running out of option is there a possibility to download the latest pre 10.04 stable version?

Whenever I install Fedora other distros don't show up in GRUB. Windows shows up in "other," and I can see the other distro still intact when I run G Parted, but I don't know how to get it to show up in GRUB. Is there a terminal-command in F14 that probes other OS's on the hard drive and restores them to GRUB?

View 4 Replies View Relatedim a rookie at configuring linux and i have problem booting slackware 13.1 just installed. i get a message similar to this Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown- block(8,4) i got this one from another user who has a similar problem, they say i should fix lilo.conf and it actually was pointing to a wrong partition so i fixed it. i also fixed /etc/fstab to make it point to the right partition /dev/sda3. but after fixing the files, it still wants to load something in /dev/sda4, i dont know why so what should i do next, please explain with commands and not just words. edit this is my lilo.conf

I downloaded Debian Stable last night, and everything appear to go smoothly. Today, I booted up the new OS to try it out for the first time. As I was exploring a few of the features, I decided to pull up a web browser. No internet connection.
No big deal, I thought, as I searched around for a way to connect wirelessly. I couldn't find a way to do so. I consulted one of my more Linux savvy friends, who advised me to pull up the terminal and enter a command to start the network-manager. According to the terminal, no such file currently exists on my system.
This is a bit of a conundrum for me, since I am on my university campus with no ethernet cord to attempt a direct connection. Is there any way to get the network-manager onto my computer? Also, did I mess up somewhere in the installation, or did someone not package the file with CD1 for some unknown reason?
My first day on a linux ditibution ever, windows user untill now. I just bought a dedicated server and used the automated tools to install debian.
Now I connected through ssh and I saw that python was already installed doing python --version (v2.7.9)
However running 'pip install beautifulsoup4' return -bash: pip: "command not found"
Is there something similar to windows environment variables that I need to set?

I had a problem with my grub (system displayed "unknown filesystem" and then the grub rescue prompt). I then used a livecd of ubuntu 9.04 and ran fsck for a while (closed it in the middle). Grub then worked. But when i select ubuntu 10.04 it goes to the purple screen and stops there. There's some error before loading the purple screen.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using a system with nvidia graphics card gt220 with driver version 190. I tried installing mplayer and that installation procedure upgraded my nvidia driver. The installation was not successful and it gave an error that there are some broken packages. I ignored that warning and shutdown the system. When i tried to boot again after some time, it took me to a terminal instead of login screen.
I tried to recover the system using "report broken packages" option from recovery mode. I could able to delete all the broken packages. After removing all the broken packages, i tried to install nvidia drivers using command "apt-get install nvidia-glx-190".
