Programming :: Modprobe Command - Unknown Symbol
Jul 19, 2010
I am working on research using a USB wireless card (WUSB600N) which works by a driver from Ralink (rt3572). In order to achieve my task, I am trying to modify that driver. One of the ways, I tried to call a function written in different module from that which I am working in. Every thing went fine (make & make install) until the modprobe command when i got (Unknown Symbol) about that function. I tried many ways to solve that problem like; Export_Symbol, and function pointers but, with no results!

Trying to setup my box as a router on Ubuntu 10.04. When trying to setup a NAT rule in iptables 1.4.4 like so:
Code:
sudo iptables --table NAT --append POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE
I keep getting:
Code:
Can't initialize iptables table 'NAT': Table does not exist (do you need to insmod?)
Looking at lsmod, it doesn't look like I have anything NAT related loaded ( I just have iptable_filter, ip_tables, and x_table ). Doing a locate nat, I find a module that looks like it should work. I'm running 10.04.1 LTS - Kernel is 2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP and it is pretty much stock - haven't done anything fancy... this module looks promising:
Code:
/lib/modules/2.6.32-25-generic/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptable_nat.ko
but loading it and I get:
Code:
-1 Unknown symbol in module

I have a Plustek 9636T parallel port scanner. Has been faithfully working for me for years up through Fedora 8. It has a kernel driver that I build and install every time the kernel changes.
I finally bit the bullet and did a new install of Fedora 12 to get up to date. But now when I try to build my kernel driver and install it, I get this fatal error on the modprobe:
FATAL: Error inserting pt_drv (/lib/modules/2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.i686.PAE/kernel/drivers/parport/pt_drv.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
Examining dmesg shows: Unknown symbol proc_root. I can't find that message anywhere on a Google search.

I am running into a problem with a script I have to load the proper ethernet drivers on the script start, but the modprobe command fails.
I don't know exactly what it says but I believe it was something to the effect of "cannot find (x)." Which would be fine if it did it all of the time, but if I ctrl+c out of the script and attempt to do the command manually it works.
Anyone out there know what might be going on? I've been searching google and stackoverload and here and haven't come across anyone else having this issue.
Or better yet, is there a way to have a shell script implement a .rules file for a specific instance?

I'm working with Terminal (Mac OS X), but I think this is a built-in part of Linux. Sometimes, when I execute a command, Terminal returns a new, indented line with just -> on the line. It seems like it's waiting for something, but I don't know if it requires action on my part or not. Pressing enter simply returns another, identical line. When I Ctrl + C, it says Aborted, meaning something was clearly processing.

Apache doesn't start with libedit.so.0.0.34 ( from libedit0-3.0.snap20090923-4.1.x86_64 ).
Code:

Solution: I copied /usr/lib64/libedit.so.0.0.27 from a previous install and symlinked /usr/lib64/libedit.so.0 to it.

ive made a slight mistake on my Ubuntu 9.10 64bit. I was trying to get Voodoo Motion Tracking software to work, and it was having trouble locating some Qt Libs, so I decided it was a good idea to move its included libs into /user/lib32 directory. Voodoo now works, but Skype instead comes up with:
Code:
skype: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib32/libQtDBus.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN14QObjectPrivate15checkWindowRoleEv Skype was installed using their own provided 64bit .deb - it was previously working fine.

The most recent update impacted my thunderbird-3.0. When launched I get these error messages
/usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.3pre/thunderbird-bin: Symbol `SSL_ImplementedCiphers' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking
/usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.3pre/thunderbird-bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libnssutil3.so.1d: undefined symbol: PL_ClearArenaPool
I can only assume the libnssutil3 library was upgraded and this broke the library call in the thunderbird-3.0.

I am trying to replacee all digits with a symbol (say, big U here) in a string by
[code]...
The result become 'UsUoUmUeUtUhUiUnUgU' instead of 'somethingUUU' as expected. Looks like my string contains some 'hidden digits' in between the letters. Does anyone have an idea about that?

I have a problem with the fritz!wlan usb stick. I have installed itth success on another PC by using instructions published here Ndiswrapper - openSUSE.Today I have decided to erase WindowsXP from my wife's computer (that is an identical to the one I use). So I have downloaded the OpenSuse 11.2 DVD and I have performed a completely new installation from DVD.After installation has been executed with success, I have decided to install an internet connection using the istructions above. I told to myself: "it will take 5 minutes, all I must to do is to reply action I have done one month ago... the internet usb-stick is the same, so it will be easy to replicate the process..."I was wrong... Previously after doing aptitude upgrade, my pidgin seems broken with no gui shown. So I decided to download the latest source from pidgin website and build it from source, but I think I made situation worse because it then complained that ssl lib was needed. Then I removed the libpurple (e.g. aptitude purge libpurple0 libpurple-bin libpurple-dev) and reinstalled pidgin (aptitude install pidgin). Now it shows the error
pidgin: symbol lookup error: pidgin: undefined symbol: purple_media_element_info_get_type
I searched on the internet and can not find a solution. The clues on the internet says that's because the piding I use is the older version of libpurple. But I think I've removed all with purge and reinstalled it. Maybe some legacy binary is referenced. What or where it might be? Or where there may contain related information.

Now I connected through ssh and I saw that python was already installed doing python --version (v2.7.9)
However running 'pip install beautifulsoup4' return -bash: pip: "command not found"
Is there something similar to windows environment variables that I need to set?

I saw 2 users asking the same question, but no one has answered that post...
I am posting this because it is also happening to me.
I've installed (through Wubi) Ubuntu 10.04, after rebooting, I've got this error, waiting a couple seconds, Ubuntu started normally. This message now repeats whenever I start Ubuntu.
Error: unknown command, keystatus
I always get this message when I boot to Ubuntu. How can I get rid of this message and fix this issue.

I'm running sed in WinXP on a text file using a script file. Deleting the offending line in the script file still produces the same result (as the next line has the same syntax). I'm running Debian testing and after a recent software update, suddenly I can no longer boot into my single Linux kernel image anymore. I did look at the software update before I did it and I don't believe that it removed any software packages. When I try to boot into my linux 2.6.26-1-amd64 image, I get the following message from grub:"error: unknown command `initrd'"..The same error appears if I try to boot into single-user mode. I have a Windows XP partition on the same hard disk and I am still able to boot into that from grub. I've searched the net and haven't really found my same problem replicated anywhere. I would imagine that the problem is just that somehow the initrd package got removed in my last software update, but again I don't recall seeing any software that the update planned to remove.
Any thoughts on how I would go about fixing this problem? Since I'm unable to get into Linux at all, I imagine I'll have to use a LiveCD to get in and fix the problem, but I don't know where to begin looking.

I have a perl script which was written for me by a professional (I have some basic knowledge), is working fine at the moment but on moving it to a different server as I'm changing a server (new server is shared and supports perl modules), I get the following message"Global symbol "$psid" requires explicit package name at admin.pl line 16". I get this for every single one for my values for the whole script which is about 2000 lines. Same error messages for main and admin.I haven't changed anything on moving it to the new server apart from the first line which is the location of the perl.I thought it would be too much to post the whole script here but anyone has any idea why is doing it taking into account that it works on a different server?

I need to write a wrapper function around the mvprintw function, like so:
int smvprintw( ? )
{
// Do various checks/modifications on the first two arguments (int y,
int x) first,
// and then
return mvprintw ( ? );
}
How should I write the args for smvprintw so that I can pass all the data correctly to mvprintw, and also do my checks on the first two args (for example, to modify them)? I'm confused by the prototype of mvprintw: This is mvprintw as listed in the man pages:
int mvprintw(int y, int x, const char *fmt, ...);
And this is how I saw it in ncurses.h:
extern NCURSES_EXPORT(int) mvprintw (int,int, const char *,...)
I believe the "..." refers to the unknown number of items after const char * fmt. Will it suffice to do something like "int smvprintw(int y, int x, const char * fmt, void * etc)" and then "mvprintw(y, x, fmt, etc)" inside the function?

I've written a usb device driver and a program that sends and receives data over the bulk pipe. The read function sometimes returnsI'm reading an unknown amount of data. However, using a usb tracker I can see that the correct data is being sent.The error only occurs sometimes.I expect that the read function is told to read more data that it receives it would fail and return -1, however if this was the case then every read call would fail.

I want to find out my IP and I test this code from beej tutorial:
Code:
char hostname[128];
int i;
struct hostent *he;
struct in_addr **addr_list;
struct in_addr addr;
gethostname(hostname, sizeof hostname);
printf("My hostname: %s
", hostname);
he = gethostbyname(hostname);
if (he == NULL) { // do some error checking
herror("gethostbyname"); // herror(), NOT perror()
return 1;
} // print information about this host:
printf("Official name is: %s
", he->h_name);
printf("IP address: %s
", inet_ntoa(*(struct in_addr*)he->h_addr));
printf("All addresses: ");
addr_list = (struct in_addr **)he->h_addr_list;
for(i = 0; addr_list[i] != NULL; i++) {
printf("%s ", inet_ntoa(*addr_list[i]));
}
printf("
");
return 0;
But my output is this:
Code:
My hostname: vBx
gethostbyname: Unknown host
I heard that it works in windows, why isn't working in linux?

I am getting this error "Unknown filter "police", hence option "rate" is unparsable. This is in Linux Kernel 2.6 which is compiled with the "policing" option enabled in Qos (Kernel config). The error seems to be coming from the file tc.c in iproute2/
static int parse_nofopt(struct filter_util *qu, char *fhandle, int argc, char **argv, struct nlmsghdr *n) {
__u32 handle;
if (argc) {
fprintf(stderr, "Unknown filter "%s", hence option "%s" is unparsable
", qu->id, *argv);
return -1;
} if (fhandle) {
struct tcmsg *t = NLMSG_DATA(n);
if (get_u32(&handle, fhandle, 16)) {
fprintf(stderr, "Unparsable filter ID "%s"
", fhandle);
return -1; }
t->tcm_handle = handle; }
return 0; }
This is called from get_filter_kind() which is called from tc_filter_modify(), called from do_filter(), from do_cmd() from main()...all in tc.c. Is this a known "bug" in iproute2+2.6 as the 2.4 Kernel works with the same settings?
