Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Use The GRUB?

I've come upon a system which dual boots Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7,and it uses GRUB2.Linux was installed first and after sometime Windows 7 was installed on it, the GRUB reinstalled so that it recognizes both Linux and Windows and all was well.
Now, when the system is started up, it presents the GRUB menu from which you can boot into windows but not into ubuntu; it just presents a blank screen. As I understand, no upgrades to linux or windows had been done and people had been using it only with Windows for a few months, so no one recognized this problem with linux until now. I don't know whether the problem is with GRUB since one can and does boot into windows everyday from the same GRUB menu.

I upgraded to 10.10, and grub just came back with "no wubildr", and then a "no other mode", or something like that. I dual boot xp (I used it to install wubi), and I need a few files off my linux partition. Is there a way to:recover my files within windows
skip grub and go strait to ubuntu

I started off on 9.10 and upgraded to 10.4 without any problems. However during the upgrade to 10.10 got asked about grub (see attachment 1& 2) and I think I should have ticked the other boxs but I didn't. I also got an error (see3) The 4th one I think is a different issue.On the restart it would only get to the purple screen before the login field appears. I presume I need to do something to the grub but have no idea what.My system is 64bit and a raid 1. The attachment 5 shows the partition arrangement I can boot into the the PC with a live (32bit 10.10) cd.

I have a dual boot Win7/Ubuntu laptop. I have been running it dual since 10.04, Lucid with no problems, and I upgraded to 10.10 also without problems. However, when I upgraded to 11.04 I began to get error messages on boot up.
Importantly - both Win7 and Ubuntu still work fine, so it could be worse, but clearly something is not right in GRUB.
I could solve this by wiping Ubuntu and reinstalling from the Live CD, but that teaches me nothing, so I would like to get to the bottom of the problem.
The following is what I get if I try to update grub:

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 (x64) today. I use an LG LCD monitor. After installation, I am unable to see the grub menu. I get a 'D-sub out of range 92.5 kHz / 58 Hz' message on screen instead of grub menu. I know the grub menu is there because, by pressing the 'down' button 5 times and then the 'enter' button I am able to select the windows loader. If I select nothing I am able to log into ubuntu without any display problem.

had a dual O/S win Vista 64bit & unbuntu 9.10 64bit.
1. Had a virus on my Win vista side, anti virus could help (virus kept replicating itself - to halt all progs from running).
2. In the End Win Vista would start & was only used Unbuntu for about 2 days.
3. Tried to repair Win Vista, but noting worked.
4. Couldn't mount Win partition through unbuntu either - needed to copy some files across.
5. Eventually formatted Win partition side & re-installed Win Vista 64bit.
6. The problem now is that the grub option to select the O/S choice isn't there, thus i can't use Linux.
6b. The computer loads only Win vista 64bit (Like there usn't a Linux)
7.Checked at the disk management prog - could see my linux space but have no access.
8. Used a live Linux cd to access linux partition, just to check - it worked.
9. how can i acccess the Linux O/S as normal?

The problem is I've set up a dual boot with Xp and Ubuntu 10.04. Ubuntu was working fine till 2 days back but now when I select Ubuntu from the grub screen i get a whole lot of numbers next which it'll say Usb drive or sd card reader etc.. these go by quickly and then the comp stops running. If i press enter on the keyboard I get Initramfs and then i can type but nothing happens even if I type reboot. if I press cntrl+alt+F2 then i get a blank screen with flashing cursor. Same with recovery mode. Windows boots fine. The grub2 screen comes fine. The last thing i did before this happened is reconfigure the grub2 screen, but it seems to be fine (i had added a background img and reordered the boot options) I did not edit grub.cfg. I would prefer not to reinstall it as iv done it a half a dozen times already in the last few weeks..

I have a 9.10 ubuntu desktop on a tower (bought 2004) working fine, and wanted to add a 10.4 server on an additional partition. After install, I stated grub may be newly written, as the list of os was fine. After reboot I got "grub rescue>" I managed to get the system working again, and now I have a grub2 menu list stating correct entries. But when I select the server entry the boot fails telling "disk not found" (The UUID of the partition given is correct, and also shown when accessing the partition from the 9.10 desktop (this needs an additional authentification when mounting) grub shell command ls does not show the partition, all other tools (life-CD, working installation, gparted etc.) do show it normally, I cannot find any difference. The partition is on the beginning of the disk

through a series of mistakes i have managed to take a working system and make it unable to boot. my two objectives right now are to back up my data, and to make my system bootable. here's how i got here. i used the Upgrade Manager to upgrade to 10.04 thinking it would solve a problem i was having with my previous installation. when that had completed i found I was unable to boot into 10.04. The system would hang after echoing the message "checking battery state." I attempted to rebuild my grub file, thinking this would solve the 'battery state' problem. this was a mistake. I ended up deleting it, and now there's no menu.lst file in its place.
currently when i boot up normally (i.e., with no Live CD) I automatically go into the rescue mode. so far i haven't managed to enter a command that rescue mode recognizes. alternatively, i can boot from the installation CD for Ubuntu 10.04. per this page: [URL] I take these steps:

I have just installed Ubuntu, now when logging into my laptop i am able to sucsessfully load ubuntu but i am unable to load the original OS (windows 7).
The grub 1.9 bootloader gives me the option
When selecting this option it goes to a black screen with a - in the top left of the screen then the grub screen re-appears

Ok so recently a friend recommended I try Ubuntu. So I downloaded and ripped 11.04. Reset PC went to install and got to about 95% then got an error that said "Unable to Install GRUB in /dev/sda" then downloaded 10.04 LTS and got same issue along with 10.01 (friends disc) and same issue. I have tried both 64 and 32bit, have tried iso and usb. I was able to install it on an older machine of mine and enjoying it. But I really want it on my main machine. Here are the specs of my main.
MOBO = X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard code...
Number 8 and 9 are the issue and choices after words. I am unable to select any choice on step nine. when i hit OK it wont do anything.
I hope this is all enough info and would love any help that is given. My friend who is an Ubuntu user is throwing his hands in the air at this point lol.
While doing research I found a few ppl with similar issues. And one person said when he made his own /root and /home partitions it worked. I get similar issue even if I take those steps.
Ive collected as much info for you guys as I can think of if you need more info plz let me know.

I upgraded from grub to grub2 recently, and during an update of my system, it ran the update-grub command which prompted a window asking me where to install Grub. Since I didn't know what partition to install it to and the help suggested to install it to all if I was unsure what partition to install it to - I accidentally installed Grub to my Windows partitions (both the regular and the recovery console).
So now, I can't boot into Windows - the computer just hangs after Grub with a blinking cursor and I have to perform a hard reset. Is there any way for me to restore the boot record for the windows partition without having to reinstall windows from the ground up?! I can't use Linux for my webbanking and other important tasks, so (unfortunately) I need Windows back desperately!

I have accidentally started the recovery OS of my netbook, and messed-up grub. I can start the Netbook from a live CD, but I do not manage to restore grub to anything useful. Below the outcome of the Boot Info Script I have found in the forum:

I have a grub menu with a ton of old kernel entries that I want to delete. I've scoured this forum, and haven't found anything that works. I've tried:

I tried running the kernel I supposedly removed, and it wouldn't start, which is promising, but how do I get it out of the grub menu? I've also tried using Synaptic, but that didn't work either.

I'm trying to switch to a new RAID5 array but can't get it to boot. My disks:/dev/sda: new RAID member
/dev/sdb: Windows disk
/dev/sdc: new RAID member
/dev/sdd: old disk, currently using /dev/sdd3 as /
The RAID array is /dev/md0, which is comprised of /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdc1. I have copied the contents of /dev/sdd3 to /dev/md0, and can mount /dev/md0 and chroot into it. I did this:

sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/raid/dev
sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/raid/proc

This completes with no errors, and /boot/grub/grub.cfg looks correct[EDIT: No it doesn't. It has root='(md/0)' instead of root='(md0)']. For example, here's the first entry:

Lately I was upgrading from F9 to F10 on my IBM thinkpad, everything looked good and in the end of the uppgrading prosess I got a messages witch told me that my upgrade was successfull and I was asked to reset the computer, but there my problems begin , after reset I only get black screen with the name name GRUB written in the up left corner of the screen and everything stopps there.

I got a new Sony Vaio Z and try to install Ubuntu on it. The laptop has got two 64 GB SSDs setup as a RAID 0 array. [URL]. As the configuration is done in the BIOS, I assume it's hardware RAID. [URL]. The problem is that - no matter what I try - the installers are unable to write the GRUB loader on the hard disk. I tried both, standard and alternate installer (9.10 / 64 bit), and both failed at that point. Not a really error message, it just says "cannot write GRUB boot loader".
I also tried two different scenarios:
- Ubuntu beside Windows (shrinked the partition for that)
- Ubuntu on the empty RAID

I recently performed a reinstall of ubuntu after mucking up my partitions, and I am running it dual booted with windows 7.
I recently performed a grub-pc update, but I didn't know what it was asking me to do during the process itself of updating the process.
It asked me at one point where to install grub, and I selected all my partitions because it suggested that if I didn't know. I think that may have damaged my windows section, which was also selection.

First, I know there are numerous threads on grub errors but I have tried all possible solutions and that's why I'm here. My issue is that I'm not able to boot from the grub prompt as described for installing grub from a LiveCD https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...0from%20LiveCD. I can see grub is installed but is missing the kernal and other files. code...
I ran the boot_info script and the output is attached. From what I can tell it cannot even detect an OS being installed, but I've kept everything up to date and never had any issues. Everything was fine yesterday and now this. Also, I tried the Boot Repair CD and that did not work.

I made an xubuntu disk.loaded it and rewrote my hardrive.on a pretty old averatec laptop. 3/4 of the install it gives a a io error and stops the install.I tried to reinstall from the screen again but got the same error.So I rebooted and it skips everything and goes straight to a grub loading stage 1.5, grub loading error 17. It even skips the live cd.I also tried to do it thru a usb stick but that gets ignored too.

A failed upgrade, from disk images, of Fedora 10 to 11 resulted in no GRUB bootloader main menu appearing on bootup (no WIN, no LINUX choices from which to boot). I am booted directly into the GRUB command shell...so, no WIN, no LINUX, nothing. And my understanding of GRUB shell commands is very low.I have 2 hard disks, WIN on the first, LINUX on the second. I believe GRUB Bootloader is on the first disk.Sadly, I have no external install media.An old grub.conf hardcopy indicates that root =/dev/sdb2, root (hd1,0), kernel /vmlinuz....olderversion...(relative to /boot),initrd /initrd...olderversion... Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen....nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete....system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

I am new to Linux. I have installed RHEL 5.4 on my PC with preloaded Windows XP.
Windows was set as the first boot kernel. So if i do not choose which OS to be loaded it will load Windows by Default.
Today I got an error saying GRub Loading Stage2 read error.

The first is I seem to have 3 GRUB installs. So whilst I update the one from my live session, the change does not appear in the boot up menu. I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).

I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:

I have 2 hard disks. sda,sdb
In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].
In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.
I had ubuntu 10.04 running on that for a long time. However, I wanted to reinstall ubuntu and use 10.10.This is what I did EXACTLY:Booted from Ubuntu install CD
Chose advanced istall
Selected sdb3 for Ubuntu
I installed GRUB2 on the SAME partition as Ubuntu aka sdb3 Installed then rebooted
I can boot into Ubuntu fine, but whenever I select Windows 7 bootloader from the GRUB menu, the screen goes black, and my PC reboots.

So my computer has ubuntu 9.10 installed 1st and I want to install win 7 in a separate partition. Basically, ubuntu 1st, win 7 later so far from what I learned from search results, grub 2 have problem with win 7 installed later and what was recommended was install win 7 before ubuntu. how ever I do not have the time to start over again because there are too many things to back up or install again. can I simply revert grub 2 to grub 1 again and resolve the problem?
