Ubuntu Installation :: Stuck In Busybox After A Powerfailure During Install-no Internal CD Drive USB Boot?

May 8, 2010

I was having a hard time installing Xubuntu on a an old Japanese FMV Biblo LOOX S73A, with no internal drive. trying both from a USB stick and from a CD ( I think the USB's were USB 1's, not sure) but it was finally rolling with the CD---the bios lists USB booting- yet things happen, power shortage and the battery was out-

I'm stuck with a broken Xubuntu intall I have 3 grub options, regular, recovery mode and mem test I've tried to reinstall forcing the computer to boot from the CD in the bios, but get "no os found" If I let it boot from the hard drive, I get to Busybox/initramfs commands that I know nothing of. I just want to do a clean reinstall of the whle thing, but cannot find out how to do so. as mentioned this bios has an option to boot from USB CD ROM DRIVE, hard disk, or floppy

Ubuntu Installation :: Triple Boot On A 320 Gb Internal Drive?

Jul 31, 2011

I would like to triple boot vista, opensuse and ubuntu.

I need to set aside 165 gb for Vista (which has been backed up to an external drive).

Would like to make a fresh install of Ububtu and Opensuse with Ubunto being the main OS. I figured 100 GB for Ubuntu and 55 GB for Opensuse would probably be fine (the remainder I need to set aside for Vista).

Ive popped in the Ubuntu DVD and am about to install it but am stuck on the "allocate drive space" part. I do not understand how to partition the hd and what to set each partition to in the "Use as" and "Mount Point"

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting BusyBox When Trying To Install Natty From USB?

Apr 30, 2011

I've tried both the DVD and CD, the CD with both usb-creator-kde and unetbootin. The results are the same always, the USB boots, into the splash screen, I select Start Kubuntu, it goes to the loading screen. After some seconds it starts scrolling a wall of text, gives some error about not being able to write or read /root/var/* because they don't exists and end up on a BusyBox with (initramfs) prompt.

I need to install the system on a new disk (2tb) instead of upgrading because I have to send the current one (1tb) to replacement. Could the large 2tb disk be a problem? I tried unplugging all disks and leaving just the disk I want to install to, but no deal... (both are SATA).(Checked the md5sum and they both match for DVD and CD...)

Ubuntu Installation :: Any Way To Make Drive Reusable As Internal Drive

Apr 7, 2010

I recently scapped XP Pro on an old laptop (Toshiba Portege 7220)as it was so slow and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 - All installed ok and it worked fine for about a month. Last week I switched on, got the Ubuntu splash screen and thats where it stayed. I gave lappy to a friend of mine that knows about Pc's (hahaha). When I got it back he said he'd wiped the HDD and partially installed xp. The install apparantly hung after the reformat and copying files onto it.My problem now is I can't boot from HDD, Ubuntu Live CD or Windows CD - Laptop is set to boot from cd then hdd. When I try to boot from CD, the cd is read as I hear the drive being used also see light for cd flashing, after a while i get a blank screen with flashing cursor in top left corner and the cd stops. If I remove the HDD and put it in external usb caddy I can see the windows folders/files when plugged into my desk top.My questions are :-

1. Is there any way to make the drive reusable as a internal drive again as I know it works as an external drive.I would like to reinstall Ubuntu on it

2. Is it a fault with the laptop itself - how do I check

I ran into a bug in gtk which I seem to have fixed, but now I have more serious errors. If I boot without a CD, I get dumped into a busybox shell after the machine fails to boot. From the live CD, I tried dist-upgrading again and it dies trying to build and install rsyslog with a broken pipe error. I am at a loss as to what to do from here short of reinstalling (which is the last option as this server has a lot of custom configs on it)

Ubuntu Installation :: Installer Not Seeing Internal Hard Drive

Sep 26, 2010

I've just put together a new machine and as I expected, there are some issues with hardware. I've just tried to set up the installation of ubuntu, got to the partitioning section and only my external hard drive is being picked up. The internal hard drive is a 1TB SATA drive plugged into a 6GB/s DATA port on my m/b (Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4 running Intel i5 760 processor). I'm probably going to try the alternate CD to see if that works, but does anyone know if this is a common problem for any of my hardware? (I did a google but couldn't find anything).

WIN 7 - 125gb

Fedora Installation :: Internal Hard Drive Not Seen Correctly As Sdb?

Aug 24, 2009

I went through the Fedora 11 DVD setup process up to the partition screen, which does show my external SATA drive correct as; /dev/sda when connected by eSATA, but it shows the internal drive which is a standard IDE, as; /dev/sdf , when it should be as; sdb, why ? I did run that fdisk -l in a terminal from one of my other installed Linux, and it did show drives as correct, ( sda, sdb ). I think this may be a issue related to the digital media card reader built into this 2006 Gateway desktop computer being detected as drives like Windows does and assigns drive letters, or is this some bug in Fedora 11 ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub / Boot After 10.10 Install From USB Drive

Jan 15, 2011

I am setting up ubuntu on a new(ish) HP desktop and it has been pretty painful. My issues up until now are in this thread: [URL] I marked that one as solved and am starting a new one as the initial issue for starting that thread was indeed solved. Here is where I am at now: [URL] I've found that I can just type exit, sometimes, once sometimes 10 times, and ubuntu will eventually boot. My main concern is that the grub menu only appears intermittently at boot. If I hit ESC to specify a boot device, it will show up after I pick, but if I just turn the PC on, it seems to be hit or miss. Also, as an aside, when I do get the grub menu, it is version 1.9.xxxxx. Should I be using 2?

Once in a grub menu, I follow the instructions here: [URL] and that lets me fully boot without getting the above 'gave up waiting...'error. The only problem is that this seems to only be temporary. When I reboot and get to a grub menu again, hit e to edit, it's back to what it was before....

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot ISO From One Part Of Drive And Install On Other

When I entered the boot options and selected CD to try and load the ubuntu CD it just booted off the HDD repeatedly. I removed (foolishly perhaps) the HDD and formatted it on my other machine, then created a start-up disk for ubuntu on it. I re-installed the hard drive and loaded ubuntu with no problems, but I can't install it. What do I need to do to the HDD (partitions, flags, etc) to make it so I can boot the iso from one part of the drive and install on the other?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install/boot From Live Cd Or Flash Drive

Aug 17, 2010

I have made several live Cd's and img for my flash drive and tried to even preview Ubuntu before install, but nothing seems to be working. it makes it to the screen that says Ubuntu with the dots and the dots "cycle" then afew seconds later, weather cd or flash drive, everything just stops and my computer freezes. Tried nomodeset and everything i could find between here and google to no avail.

cant get past that load screen. Ive been lurking on the forum for days and finally got fed up enough to post this because im fresh and have no clue what im doing when it comes to this. all i know is i want something better than windows(lol) and Ubuntu seems like its right up my alley...user, my "skills" if you will, are better than most, but Linux.its like trying to reed Greek for me.Also, computer specs...Toshiba A505-S6025 4gb Memory Nvidia GeForce 310M (from what i read i will have trouble with this) Realtek RTL8191SE wlan (also will have problems with this)

EDIT: just ran live cd with virtual box and it started the demo of Ubuntu with no problem with no options(like nomodeset) checked off... apparently i think im doing something wrong when it comes to booting the other way...

Ubuntu Installation :: Wrong Drive Mounted As /boot During 10.10 Install?

Mar 19, 2011

My old server machine running Ubuntu 6 experienced hardware failure, so I built a new machine with spare parts and decided to install 10.10. I used the 2 HDDs from the old machine and decided to use existing partitions for the 10.10 installation. I specified the existing partitions on a 250 GB PATA drive for root, /boot, /home, and swap. For some reason when I booted up 10.10 for the first time, the other HDD (750 GB SATA) was mounted as /boot. I never specified the second drive to be used for anything during the installation, so I have no idea why this happened.and how can I change the mount point for /boot? I would like the highlighted partition in the attached screenshot to be /boot. I really hope nothing on the 750 GB drive was overwritten in this whole process, because it contains all of my photo and video backup.
