Ubuntu Installation :: Programs With No Internet On Machine

Jan 17, 2010

Ive successfully set up Ubuntu on a desktop computer I got for free (because its RAM was half destroyed by a virus and the owner got a new one). I dont have this computer connected to the internet but I can get the internet on my laptops built in wifi (from some random neighbour who has an unsecure WLAN). So, to install programs on Ubuntu I have to download the .deb or .ter.gz files from the laptop (winXP), copy them to a USB drive, transfer them to the Linux machine and install. Problem is, none have worked so far:

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing Programs Without Apt-get/internet Connection?

Apr 24, 2010

I don't yet have an internet connection on my machine so I am using cyber cafes to do my research and whatnot. However, most of the stuff I read concerning updates and installations rely heavily on the machine using an internet connection to automatically install various packages.I don't mind reading up myself on this kind of thing but I think I need a pointer in the right direction as "ubuntu package install without apt/get" doesn't bring up much on a google search (the only entry on the first page is a post on this forum back from 2005 about kernal compiling!).

As an example, the file I would like to install is "aircrack-ng-1.0.tar.gz", which I've already downloaded and saved to my machine's desktop. I'm not really asking how to install aircrack, per se, but just any kind of package without relying on an internet connection (i.e. download the program/package to a flash disk and then on to my machine).

Ubuntu Installation :: Download Packages And Transfer To Non Internet Machine?

Mar 23, 2010

I have a server which is in an isolated LAN onto which I would like to install some packages from the Ubuntu Repositories.I realise I can go to packages.ubuntu.com and download them one at a time following the dependencies through but this is a bit of a nightmare. Is there anyway I can use the -d option of apt-get to download the files on another machine so I can transfer the lot over in one go?It is probably important to note that the server is running 8.04.4 and the other machine I have run 9.10 and may or may not have said packages installed.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Ping KK Machine, Internet/network ON Machine Works?

Mar 18, 2010

I have an ubuntu kk laptop connected via wireless to my mixed network (xp, win7, other ubuntu), but i can not ping said machine or connect via ssh. Internet and smb-browsing ON this machine work, as does pinging FROM it. If this was a windows machine, I'd say a firewall is in the way, but since it's a vanilla karmic install, this should not be the case (or should it?).

Ubuntu Networking :: Programs Do Not Connect To Internet?

Mar 9, 2010

I'm having problems with programs connecting to the internet. I typed in
sudo apt-get install wine

and I get the following:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package wine

I KNOW there is a package called wine but it cant find it. I can't install any other programs from programs either. My gDebi package manager is supposed to automatically download and install dependencies but it doesn't do that either.

I am sure I am connected to the internet as I can browse just fine.

Ubuntu Networking :: Some Programs Cannot Access Internet

May 29, 2010

I have used other distros on and off in the past with no trouble, but for some reason I seem to have had this problem with several versions and flavours of Ubuntu on various systems. I've never solved this problem the previous times I've had it, just given up. But this time I actually need to get this working. I've recently upgraded my computer, so my old system has been relegated to HTPC duties in my lounge. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and I'm having issues getting internet access with some programs, while others work fine.

Firefox and Evolution haven't been able to access the internet from the start.Empathy IM has no trouble connecting to my MSN and Facebook accounts.I had no trouble downloading and installing Google Chromium browser through Ubuntu Software Center, and have no trouble accessing the internet with Chromium. On the first boot after the install, Ubuntu automatically told me to update my nVidia drivers online, and did so without error.Update Manager detects updates, but fails to download them.

I successfully and flawlessly downloaded installed XBMC Media Center and some related skins and things through Synaptic, but XBMC cannot access the internet. However it can access shared files over my LAN, including Windows 7 shares.Ubuntu itself cannot access any files on my Windows 7 computer. It can access the work group and see my Win7 shares, but refuses to mount them. Strangely, XBMC can access these shares and stream media from them fine.

Ubuntu :: Update Kubuntu Simultaneously On Ubuntu Machine Cause Slower Performance / Conflict In Programs

Jun 7, 2011

I recently installed the KDE (Kubuntu) desktop via Synaptic Package Manager. I have a few questions about this: Do I have to update Kubuntu when I update Ubuntu in October, or will it update on its own? Does running Kubuntu simultaneously on an Ubuntu machine cause any issues (slower performance, conflict in programs, etc.)? How do I uninstall Kubuntu if I decide that Ubuntu works just fine for me?

Fedora Networking :: Determine Which Programs Access Internet

Mar 16, 2009

I see from the netspeed applet that my computer is downloading stuff almost constantly. Not a whole lot, 8b - 700b per second while apparently doing nothing. Some of this is just responding to broadcasts from the router, but surely not all. I would like to be able to determine which programs are accessing the internet over that wireless card, with a view to cutting down on my bandwidth usage. Is there a program that can tell me which ones are doing what at a given time?

Networking :: Ubuntu Machine Gets LAN But No Internet

Sep 12, 2009

A few weeks ago, my Ubuntu machine (Hardy Heron) suddenly stopped connecting to the internet. I usually run it headless, and it was still fine connecting to other machines on my LAN (in either direction), but I can't ping out or run any other 'net stuff. I even tried pinging by IP address instead of name. I did notice that my eth0 (I only have one NIC in the machine) had mysteriously changed to eth1, but I fixed the /etc/networking/interfaces file and the udev rules and now it's back to eth0. Still gets LAN but no internet. I've done ifup/ifdown a few times, even restarted more than once. I could always try another NIC, but I thought I get any hardware suggestions first.

What do I need to copy from the first machine so that the second machine will install these packages? I'm not referring to the packages themselves (I can copy them over and install them). I need to get the apt database in synch with the first machine. I assume that apt has some sort of database files? Without that configuration, the damn machine keeps trying to connect to the internet.

Ubuntu :: Virtualbox Guest Machine Can't Reach Internet?

Feb 12, 2010

I have a Windows XP virtual machine under Virtualbox PUEL 3.1.2. I have always been able to browse the Web or do anything else I wanted over the network.

Suddenly, the guest XP machine can't reach the Internet any more. There is no indication of any problem with the network connection. I checked my router, and the virtual machine is indeed getting assigned an IP address. So why can't it reach the internet?

Yes, the virtual network adapter is in bridged mode. It always worked that way before. I can see local network shares from the virtual XP machine, and even reach the Apache server running on the host OS (Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit).

Also possibly significant: Even though the virtual XP machine is detected by the router & assigned an IP address, the printer attached to the virtual XP machine cannot be seen by another Windows machine (a real one, not virtual) on the network. I never had a problem sharing the printer before. I have to share it from a virtual Windows XP machine when I'm running Ubuntu because there are no Linux drivers available (it's a Winprinter).

Networking :: Connecting To Internet With Lubuntu Through Ubuntu Machine

Apr 29, 2010

How to create some sort of network, which would mean that one computer (Lubuntu in this case) is connecting to internet through second PC (Ubuntu), which is directly connected to cable, so maybe I get some manuals and tips. The computer which is connected to internet have two LAN cards (Realtek 8139 and integrated nVidia MCP65), Realtek card is connected to the internet provider cable (internet is tied to my computer's MAC address and uses static IP).

Second computer have also a Realtek card and it's connected to first computers integrated card. Anyhow - I've put on the first computer eth1 (which is integrated MCP65) IPV4 setting to "Shared to Other Computers" and IPV6 to "Link-Local Computers" and while I was having Windows XP on the second machine, setting on it (the XP machine) DHCP (or how was it correctly called, when system automatically resolves or gets the IP and the rest what it needs?), second computer was receiving Internet signal and I could use both of them in such way.

Now the second computer is with Lubuntu and I thought that I could do the same way as did on XP - just put in Network Manager for the connection (eth0) everything to automatical and there will be internet, but there aren't and the manager shows some kind of "Automatic Ethernet" option, which after activation also doesn't do anything. What do I have to do, to make my Lubuntu machine to recognize Ubuntu's eth1 and to use it as a source for Internet?

Ubuntu Networking :: Network-manager And ICS - Couldn't Get To The Internet From Win XP Machine

Jan 29, 2010

My Ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit regular old desktop version) machine has two NICs, eth0 and eth1. eth0 does not connect to my router (and thus the Internet) automatically. I have to manually click on it in the NetworkManager applet after every reboot.

Internet connection sharing has also been impossible. I gave up trying to do that after about 2 weeks. I was simply trying to share my Internet connection with a Windows XP machine over eth1, but it never worked. I could ping one machine from the other, but couldn't get to the Internet from the Win XP machine.

Removing NetworkManager may be the ticket. Most of the tutorials for Internet connection sharing tell you to enter commands in the console. Maybe one of them will work once I remove the NetworkManager applet.

Ubuntu Networking :: OpenDNS - 8.04 Machine Do Not Always Resolve Internet Address

Nov 17, 2010

I have an odd thing going on with DNS. I have two machine's running Ubuntu and for some reason they do not always resolved internet addresses on my Internet connection. This has gone on since the Ubuntu 8.04 when I first started using Ubuntu. Anyway, I use OpenDNS' DNS servers and I have been running perfectly.

This is what is odd. My Windows XP Machine never has the problem. It always resolves. Does Windows Possibly have some Microsoft hosted DNS server hard coded in there as a backup? Things are working fine this way so I am not looking to change. I am just a little puzzled and finally got around to asking, "Why is this".
