Ubuntu Installation :: How To Wave Magic Wand So Ubuntu Will Mount Disk

Mar 7, 2010

I look at other threads where 10's 100's even 1000's of people view them and in most cases at least one or more people respond / reply.I put this thread up about 10 hours ago. Almost 50 people viewed it.I was way over tired and frustrated and probably rambled too much.I have this funky computer with a pt800ce-a mother board.I have a 500GB SATA hard drive with lots of files on it.I have this wonderful Ubuntu installation that sees the "Unallocated" disk. All I want to do is learn how to wave the magic wand so Ubuntu will mount the disk.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Mount Reformatted Ext3 Disk?

Apr 7, 2010

I'm fairly new to Ubuntu and I'm running Karmic Koala. I just reformatted an NTFS partition to Ext3, as I no longer need to access is from my windows installation. Now I'm unable to mount it though, and I get the message: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sda6 on /media/DATA2 (DATA2 being the name of the previous NTFS partition. Now the label is linuxdata)

When I try to mount it using sudo in terminal I get the following message if I use the label DATA2:

NTFS signature is missing.
Failed to mount '/dev/sda6': Ogiltigt argument
The device '/dev/sda6' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?

And if I use the label linuxdata: mount: can't find /media/linuxdata in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab I've tried to search for help, but been unable to find an explanation.

Ubuntu Installation :: Hard Disk Needs No Password In Order To Mount / Firefox Can't Start

Apr 30, 2010

well yesterday I upgraded my karmic to lynx. So far so good, overall much improved plus I love the new theme. Now the problem, I share my Firefox/Thunderbird profile (stored in my secondary HD) with WinXP (dual boot box). Since karmic, before I opened Firefox/Thunderbird, I had to mount the 2ndary HD which of course prompted me for a password and then everything worked fine. In case I forgot to mount the disk then Firefox popped the following msg: Firefox is either opened or in use. Now, lucid strangely mounts my HD without a password, more peculiarly I have r-w-e permissions and on top of that Firefox/Thunderbird gives me the silly msg!

Tried to unmount/mount back but still no password. I end up believing that this Firefox hesitation to start (based on karmic experience) is related with the password thing...or not?

Fedora Installation :: Mount NTFS Partition From 10 Rescue Mode/Disk?

Mar 9, 2009

Background for the problem:

A. I have partitioned my WinXP LTop into:

--- WinXP NTFS partition
--- a vfat partition (mounted onto /fat32)
--- Installed F10 on ext3 virtual partition

B. I do not want install grub-loader in the Master Boot Record (that would loose my WinXP boot-loader for ever)

C. I have installed grub boot loader in the First Boot Sector

D. Now I have to boot using Rescue Mode, do:

1. dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/fat32/linux.bin bs=512 count=1
2. mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /ntfs
3. cp /fat32/linux.bin /ntfs
4. modify /ntfs/c/boot.ini and introduce the statement 'c:linux.bin="Linux"'

Problem: Im not able to do step D.2 above.

Symptom:
** after booting linux using the Rescue Mode: sh-3.2# chroot /mnt/sysimage sh-3.2# uname -r 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i586 sh-3.2# mount -f ntfs /dev/sda1 /ntfs FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i586/modules.dep: No such file or directory ntfs-3g-mount: fuse device is missing, try 'modprobe fuse' as root
sh-3.2#

Observations:

* The rescue mode boots into i586 based kernel (I dont know what is the actual difference between i586 and i686 - will really appreciate if anyone can educate me about it). * The installation is only a i686 image and consequently there is *only* '/lib/modules/2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686' dir and *no* other dir. There is no dir as xxxx.fc10.i586.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 9.X To 10.2 Crashed - Alloc Magic Is Broken

Aug 25, 2010

I was upgrading from 9.X (can't remember what X is) to I believe it was 10.2 (ok, this happened over a month ago and I just haven't had the time to run after it), and lost power. Obviously doesn't sound good, right? Now when I boot I get the message "alloc magic is broken at 0xaff2c150". I have no idea if this error message is indicative of the whole problem, or what, but I can't get back to my system. I would really rather not lose my work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Reboot After Update - Invalid Magic Number Error

Jan 7, 2010

This has to be the sixth time I am going to have to reinstall Ubuntu (Can't get enough of that Linux greatness) in the past 6 months. I just don't understand what exactly is wrong, I don't install anything extra (but the ubuntu restricted extras) yet updates that ask me to reboot will take me to a GRUB command line screen and trying to boot through the command line interface gives me an, "Invalid Magic Number", error.

There should be an official tool for when problems like this come up, so that users like me can easily move their files off their HDD before reinstalling. I didn't come here to rant but, does anyone know what may be causing this everytime, how it can be avoided maybe even how to deal with the Magic Number error and boot in (I wouldn't mind typing in the commands every time BTW)?

My system
Hp Compaq 6730s
2.0Ghz 575 Celeron

The problem is when I boot from the lubuntu CD & select Try Lubuntu or Install Lubuntu the computer hangs. Xubuntu 10.04 was aready installed & I could easily boot to it. I thought may be some partition table error is causing that issue & I deleted all the existing partitions with Parted Magic Cd in Console Mode.

NB: When I tried to boot to the Parted Magic graphical session the PC hanged then too.I am totally confused. Cant understand what is going wrong here. I am now left with a broken system.

Ubuntu :: Samsung Wave Internet Tethering In 10.10?

Jan 25, 2011

I searched the forum but could not find anything to solve my problem. I installed Ubuntu via Wubi.exe from windows first time, before deciding to completely format and start with a Linux Ubuntu clean install (64-bit). When I installed it with Wubi.exe, I simply plugged in my Wave and it connected to the internet...no fuss!

Problem is, after clean installing Ubuntu, the same does not happen. I cant connect to mobile broadband. It is worth mentioning that this is my only internet connection available (mobile broadband) and I am thus unable to update, get necessary repositories from Linux etc.

I read something about usb_modeswitch being involved, manually did that, but I still cannot connect to the mobile broadband. Mobile broadband is enabled when I right-click the connections too. I set up the connection for CellC, removed the "Cellcis" username, added it and more, but it still does not connect.

Can anybody give me some pointer on how to go about fixing this connection, because as you can imagine, my Linux install is pretty useless without internet.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot 10.04 LTS And CentOS 5.5 - Error "invalid Magic Number"

Oct 3, 2010

i wanted to see the red hat side of things and do some virtualization with CentOS, so i am trying to dual boot ubuntu 10.04 LTS and CentOS 5.5. the machine is a laptop, toshiba A100 series. what I did was to create the following partitioning scheme via Ubuntu LiveCd

Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 19457 156288290+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 1 2103 16892284+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 2104 9988 63336231 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 9995 12623 21117411 83 Linux
/dev/sda8 12624 18800 49616721 83 Linux
/dev/sda9 18801 19457 5277321 82 Linux swap / Solaris

created an extended partition and in there have made sda5 and sda6 as / and home for ubuntu and sda7 and sda8 as / and home for CentOS. and sda9 as swap. I installed ubuntu first and then installed CentOS with no bootloader. Run sudo update-grub through ubuntu and now i have both Ubuntu and CentOS available. But when i select CentOS, i have an error which reads "invalid magic number".

I have grub2 installed, haven't downgraded or done anything to it and the ubuntu install is fresh, one week since i updated to 10.04 from scratch. I have found much contradictory stuff on google, but not something that provides a definite solution and also this post but the second command provided in the solution is one i cannot understand very well and it doesn't seem to work. what I am doing wrong here and how to make this work. I would prefer to do things via Ubuntu since debian stuff is what i am comfortable with and i am installing CentOS to learn not to do work on it.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Wubi Upgrade Seems To Have Corrupted Bash / Error "invalid Magic Number"?

Jan 4, 2011

I tried the steps usually offered (modifying the grub.cfg file, replacing the wubildr files), it still wouldn't boot.

I booted in with the LiveCD to try to chroot into the environment and try running 'update-grub'. However, whenever I tried to chroot, it said it could not execute /bin/bash!

Trying to modify the grub commands manually (which originally gave the error: you need to load the kernal first), in the end said "invalid magic number"

There are some configuration things set in this installation I would like to not lose. Is it hopeless?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Opening Huge Wave Files?

Jun 24, 2011

I have a wav file bigger than 8GB. i recorded it on a windows PC. unfortunately wav files cant be bigger than 2GB. somehow i got a file that is almost 9GB. I tried to chop the file under ubuntu into smaller pieces to open it part by part. i used gnome split to divide the file and made 10 parts out of it. now i have these parts of the data which i cant read with no program except for gnome split to merge them together again - which would only bring me to the beginning of my problem. so my question is: is there any other way to open/ split&open a wav file of that size or maybe a way to open the splitted file partially?

Can I expect an improvement over GWC using Click-Repair ? for the outlay of some $$$, or is GWC the best I can hope for using Ubuntu. Or, is it back to the tedious 'manual de-click' for every LP.

Ubuntu :: Mount Point For External Hard Disk?

Jan 11, 2010

I have just updated to karmic, and I found that my external hard disk partitions, previously mounted under /media/disk and /media/fat are now referenced by something looking like a UUID, namely /media/7b096ea4-60ee-46b1-95cd-1851b051c40d and /media/4951-95D9.

Is there a way to revert to the old settings? Any application relying on the files on the external hard disk has now stopped working. While I certainly could just change reference (assuming the UUID does not change every session), I'd rather use the old names if possible.
