I'm on 10.04 mini-installation. I thought my last drive was broken but the same thing is happening to another one as well. lshw -C disk outputs this code...
Searching Google didn't get me any answer but a number of people appeared to be suffering from this. So, anyone out here seeing this too? I really appreciate some input/comment on this.
I have a machine that has an integrated USB flash drive somewhere in it that I can not seem to mount. The OS knows it is there, as I can see it in the dmesg output, but the actual "node" in /dev doesn't actually exist. I'm baffled. Will you help me figure this out? Here's what I came up with so far. The disk is attached to the USB bus, used as a SCSI block device. In dmesg, it is referred to at one point as sdf, as well as under /sys/class/scsi_device. When I go check /dev, /dev/sdf does not exist!:

Some thing is using up a huge amount of my disk space about 10G and I can not determine what it is. When I look at my disk usage in system monitor it say I have used about 25G and when I scan the directory in disk usage analyzer the entire file system used is 15G.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 2 TB disk in an external SATA dock, formatted with a single ext3 (Linux) partition, which doesn't show up in the Windows 7 Computer Management->Disk Management utility, even as a raw/blank disk. I've verified that there's nothing wrong with the disk by connecting it to my Linux machine and mounting it, and I've verified that the dock is functioning properly by connecting a different FAT32-formatted disk, which mounts flawlessly as expected.I realize that I can't actually read the ext3 partition without additional software (e.g., Ext3IFS), but why doesn't the disk show up at all? Is there some sort of stupid anti-Linux filter built in? Is there any way to force Windows to recognize the disk, so that I can at the very least use direct block access with it?
Background: I want to clone an identical 2 TB disk onto this one. Due to my hardware layout, it's much easier to have the source disk attached to one machine and the destination disk connected to another, and do the clone over the network (the network is not a bottleneck with switched gigabit ethernet), than it is to hook them both up to one machine.(1) I did this once before when both machines were running Linux, but I've since upgraded the destination machine and decided to switch back to Windows for regular desktop use. I've got Cygwin installed, and have verified that the same basic method (dd + nc) will work, but I can't do anything if Windows doesn't even consider the destination disk to exist.I only have one eSATA port on each machine. Opening them up just to do this clone is a rather large annoyance. Also, since this is my backup disk, I'd like to eventually automate the cloning from the active disk to another one that I regularly swap with a third disk that I store off-site.
Ok I just installed my 1.5 TB drive. I used Gparted to format it as ext3 . why is it saying that the size is 1.36TB with 22.12Gib used and 1.34 TiB unused. How is it that I used the drive and all I did was install it. how should I reformat/format it.? I'm not putting an OS on it. Just media.
Currently I have the file system as extended and then under it its ext3
When I try to mount a disk I'm asked for password. In 9.10 I was not asked for password but after 10.04 it keeps asking me all the time.

I've had this external drive for ages, it contains all my music and pictures that I generally share on my network to my family etc... It has been working for years on Ubuntu until the other month I updated to 9.10 and now it will not mount. It still works on my EEE PC, I plug the USB in and up it pops as usual, however, I can't get it to work on Ubuntu 9.10

I suspect that one of the disks is broken in my lvm setup. I need help verifying this. The only trouble is that everything looks okay in my eyes.

When I hook it up to my Mac the hard drive shows up in Disk Utility but it can't mount it nor fix it. I don't have Diskwarrior (or similar programs) so I was wondering if I could fix it from my Linux boxes (xubuntu). So my question is, is there a program in Linux that could extract the data from the drive or (even better) fix it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just updated to karmic, and I found that my external hard disk partitions, previously mounted under /media/disk and /media/fat are now referenced by something looking like a UUID, namely /media/7b096ea4-60ee-46b1-95cd-1851b051c40d and /media/4951-95D9.
Is there a way to revert to the old settings? Any application relying on the files on the external hard disk has now stopped working. While I certainly could just change reference (assuming the UUID does not change every session), I'd rather use the old names if possible.
I'm fairly new to Ubuntu and I'm running Karmic Koala. I just reformatted an NTFS partition to Ext3, as I no longer need to access is from my windows installation. Now I'm unable to mount it though, and I get the message: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sda6 on /media/DATA2 (DATA2 being the name of the previous NTFS partition. Now the label is linuxdata)
When I try to mount it using sudo in terminal I get the following message if I use the label DATA2:
NTFS signature is missing.
Failed to mount '/dev/sda6': Ogiltigt argument
The device '/dev/sda6' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?
And if I use the label linuxdata: mount: can't find /media/linuxdata in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab I've tried to search for help, but been unable to find an explanation.
I got a little problem with Xubuntu here. Every time after I boot the system, I find one of my partitions from fstab not mounted where it's supposed to be. I do mount -a, and it replies: "mount: /dev/sdb6 already mounted or /mnt/data busy". Checking lsof of neither device nor mount point gives me nothing, and checking the output of mount I see device isn't mounted anywhere.
It gets better than this: after some time, device can be mounted just fine, this time is from 11 to 12 minutes. If something is doing anything with my device that takes whole 11 minutes, how come I don't know what it is? How can I mount device on boot? Some more (ir)relevant facts:
1. This partition is the biggest - 376 Gb
2. Here's my fstab line for this device:

It seems to only happen when I plug in USB devices such as flash drives, and keep them in when I boot. I have the fstab file configured correctly, but it still resorts to some odd default mounting points. Edit suposedly the device name changes whenever I boot with a flash drive plugged in. Is there anyway to mount a disk to a dir without pointing to its changing device name.

Mostly at boottime the system fails to mount it even though it is listed in /etc/ftab as /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1 ext2 default 1 0 I want to recover the files on it.
Is it possible to mount it after bootup? Is it necessary to reboot to detect attached disks? If the BIOS fails to detect the disk, is it impossible to mount it thereafter?

I installed Slackware 13.37 on my Dell desktop pc (I don't think that the model information is relevant in this case...), and I was able to insert CD's and DVD's which would then be mounted AUTOMATICALLY so that I could then browse the contents etc. I can STILL do this, whether or not I am logged-in as "root" or as a "normal" user...
Now here is my problem : I JUST installed Slackware 13.37 on my Toshiba notebook (a Satellite 210, in this case) TODAY. Now, I can insert the same CD's / DVD's into the drive and have them automount as the "root" user, but when I log in as a simple user, I get errors telling me that they can NOT BE MOUNTED! The messages on quite long and complex, but I can paste an copy into a secondary post if that will help. For my part, what the error message says is a lot of gibberish!
I have examined the user information on both my desktop AND laptop computers to see if there were any major differences, and there are NONE EXCEPT FOR ONE : My "user" account on my desktop is user # 1000, while on my notebook it is 100. The DEFAULT offered in both cases was 1000 when I created the accounts, but I did not see
why the next user in the list should be over 999 higher than the last one listed, so on the notebook I did not accept the default offered, and instead choose to use # 100. Was that wrong? Why does Slackware start the first created user at such a large user number?
I did NOT do anything to allow the automount of optical disks as a user on my desktop pc (at least, not to my knowledge...) that I have not done on the notebook!
I am wondering if I can set diskquota on a nfs mount, instead of where the folder actually located.
e.g.
HOST1 - /dev/sdb1 /home
exports /home to HOST2
HOST2 - HOST1:/home /home
set quota from HOST2 for /home

I had an installation of Ubuntu under windows via wubi, after an update last week it wouldn't boot up at all, I tried everything I could find about how to fix grub, none of which worked, after looking at a working installation of Ubuntu with wubi I realised that my root.disk file had dissapeared.
I gave up and decided to get rid of windows all together, and now have a fresh 'proper' install of Ubuntu, but that root.disk file has turned up in a file called 'found'.
Is there any way I can mount that file in ubuntu to retrive the documents etc that I thought I had lost?

I have recently installed Xbuntu on my old laptop (An IBM iSeries 2621) - yes its an old piece of kit with a USB 1.0 port, a cd-drive and an internal floppy.My problem is that even though removable media are set to auto-mount in the settings; when I put a floppy disk in, or a CD-ROM, they do not auto-mount so I cant access the disks (the laptop does not have wireless (or even an rj45 port!! - it only has an internal 56k modem) - hence why I REALLY need to get the CD-ROM working and recognised by Xbuntu as I have burned some packages that id like to install to CD-ROM. (a working floppy would definately be a bonus as id like to save my documents there)
