Ubuntu :: Mount Disk Without Asking For Password
May 7, 2010When I try to mount a disk I'm asked for password. In 9.10 I was not asked for password but after 10.04 it keeps asking me all the time.

View 3 Repliesi'm trying to get everything working ok. i have installed ubuntu using wubi and i've found that i can access my files on my windows partition from ubuntu. to do this i have to mount the disk and enter the password each time i boot up, and i would like this to be done automatically. i was wondering if this was possible? i put in a link directly to the music folder on windows into my 'places' but it only appears once i have put the password in. its not a huge thing, but its one of those things which would make starting up my ubuntu a lot more conveniant.
View 4 Replies View Relatedwell yesterday I upgraded my karmic to lynx. So far so good, overall much improved plus I love the new theme. Now the problem, I share my Firefox/Thunderbird profile (stored in my secondary HD) with WinXP (dual boot box). Since karmic, before I opened Firefox/Thunderbird, I had to mount the 2ndary HD which of course prompted me for a password and then everything worked fine. In case I forgot to mount the disk then Firefox popped the following msg: Firefox is either opened or in use. Now, lucid strangely mounts my HD without a password, more peculiarly I have r-w-e permissions and on top of that Firefox/Thunderbird gives me the silly msg!
Tried to unmount/mount back but still no password. I end up believing that this Firefox hesitation to start (based on karmic experience) is related with the password thing...or not?
Ok I just installed my 1.5 TB drive. I used Gparted to format it as ext3 . why is it saying that the size is 1.36TB with 22.12Gib used and 1.34 TiB unused. How is it that I used the drive and all I did was install it. how should I reformat/format it.? I'm not putting an OS on it. Just media.
Currently I have the file system as extended and then under it its ext3
I am having a dual boot system vista/ubuntu 9.04. Till recently whenever I wanted to access my vista partition I had to type in the administrative password. However, strangely, for last few days whenever I access the vista partition I don't need to type the password. The partition is just mounted and I can access the files. I would like to know the reasons and if possible to get back the previous situation (needing password to access the vista partition).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have U1004 dual boot with MSW7 and sometimes want to mount those NTFS partitions for mostly reading operations. Ubuntu makes it easy by a single click in Nautilus. How to change this behavior and allow mount NTFS partitions with user's password only, like sudo behavior, for example? In addition, how to mount them read-only?
Note: I mount those NTFS partitions occasionally and there is nothing in fstab about it.
I use truecrypt to encrypt a file containing my sensitive data (credit card numbers, bank account info, etc).
When I mount my encrypted file through truecrypt, I enter the password for my file. That's OK - I want to keep it that way. But when it gets mounted as a file system, ubuntu also requires that I enter the 'su' password.
How do I get around this?
I run ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid)
I downloaded the disk image, burned it to disk and after 3 tries managed to get the disk to load. It is asking me for a username and password. What is the username and password to log onto the install disk?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIt appears that Lucid has done away with the gksu prompt that used to greet you when you try to mount a partition. Is there any known way of restoring this? I have a number of partitions which I would rather have protected by a password (even though I know that booting a live cd will give anyone access to any mountable partition, no questions asked). I've had a quick look in gconf and found nothing that looks like it would control this behaviour, but it's quite likely that I overlooked something.

I've had this external drive for ages, it contains all my music and pictures that I generally share on my network to my family etc... It has been working for years on Ubuntu until the other month I updated to 9.10 and now it will not mount. It still works on my EEE PC, I plug the USB in and up it pops as usual, however, I can't get it to work on Ubuntu 9.10

I'm on 10.04 mini-installation. I thought my last drive was broken but the same thing is happening to another one as well. lshw -C disk outputs this code...
Searching Google didn't get me any answer but a number of people appeared to be suffering from this. So, anyone out here seeing this too? I really appreciate some input/comment on this.
I suspect that one of the disks is broken in my lvm setup. I need help verifying this. The only trouble is that everything looks okay in my eyes.
When i try to mount the logical partition. The system hangs.
"mount /dev/fileserver/media /var/media"
I have tried locating the problem without success. The same with a live cd.
Here are some of the commands i have run:

When I hook it up to my Mac the hard drive shows up in Disk Utility but it can't mount it nor fix it. I don't have Diskwarrior (or similar programs) so I was wondering if I could fix it from my Linux boxes (xubuntu). So my question is, is there a program in Linux that could extract the data from the drive or (even better) fix it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just updated to karmic, and I found that my external hard disk partitions, previously mounted under /media/disk and /media/fat are now referenced by something looking like a UUID, namely /media/7b096ea4-60ee-46b1-95cd-1851b051c40d and /media/4951-95D9.
Is there a way to revert to the old settings? Any application relying on the files on the external hard disk has now stopped working. While I certainly could just change reference (assuming the UUID does not change every session), I'd rather use the old names if possible.
I'm fairly new to Ubuntu and I'm running Karmic Koala. I just reformatted an NTFS partition to Ext3, as I no longer need to access is from my windows installation. Now I'm unable to mount it though, and I get the message: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sda6 on /media/DATA2 (DATA2 being the name of the previous NTFS partition. Now the label is linuxdata)
When I try to mount it using sudo in terminal I get the following message if I use the label DATA2:
NTFS signature is missing.
Failed to mount '/dev/sda6': Ogiltigt argument
The device '/dev/sda6' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?
And if I use the label linuxdata: mount: can't find /media/linuxdata in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab I've tried to search for help, but been unable to find an explanation.
I got a little problem with Xubuntu here. Every time after I boot the system, I find one of my partitions from fstab not mounted where it's supposed to be. I do mount -a, and it replies: "mount: /dev/sdb6 already mounted or /mnt/data busy". Checking lsof of neither device nor mount point gives me nothing, and checking the output of mount I see device isn't mounted anywhere.
It gets better than this: after some time, device can be mounted just fine, this time is from 11 to 12 minutes. If something is doing anything with my device that takes whole 11 minutes, how come I don't know what it is? How can I mount device on boot? Some more (ir)relevant facts:
1. This partition is the biggest - 376 Gb
2. Here's my fstab line for this device:
Code:
/dev/sdb6/mnt/dataext3defaults02
3. After the installation, I changed the mount point in fstab, and using /dev/sdb6 instead of UUID is a result of blind experimentation

View 1 Replies View RelatedSometimes when I restart, my NTFS drives will mount in incorrect directories. It seems to only happen when I plug in USB devices such as flash drives, and keep them in when I boot. I have the fstab file configured correctly, but it still resorts to some odd default mounting points. Edit suposedly the device name changes whenever I boot with a flash drive plugged in. Is there anyway to mount a disk to a dir without pointing to its changing device name.
View 3 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Insprion 8600 as a dual boot to try out Ubuntu. I let the setup configure partitions for me. During the install, I was asked once for a password. Last week, Win XP would not boot up; that's OK as I was planning a re-partition and reinstall of both win and Ubuntu.
I wanted to get files off the NTFS partitions (I have one for win, one for the swap file and two more fore files etc.), so I wanted to mount the NTFS partitions. I was asked for a password for the administrator. My regular password, the only one I have set up, would not work. I tried rebooted two more times and still no luck with my only password.
However, I was able to boot up from the set-up disk and mount the NTFS partitions without a password. I was able to move all the files I needed to one partition that I plan to keep (I will reinstall win xp then back up those files on the separate partition).
A question and a comment...
1. How do I install Ubuntu so that I make sure I have the passwords to do administrative level things (like mounting a drive)?
2. Being able to do administrative work off the Ubuntu test-drive disk while being denied access after signing in seems like a security issue (unless I screwed up somewhere).
I would like to known whether I can configure the server to input the password for the encryption disk automatically during boot up.Is it possible
