Ubuntu :: Error: No Such Device At GRUB

I am running a Windows 7/Karmic Koala Dualie. I was running Windows 7 first, Shrank Windows, partitioned the drive using the 40 free unallocated gigs of the 300 gig hard drive, and installed a fresh install of Karmic Koala to that. This has been working just fine (minus a few graphic driver issues) for the last week or so. Then wanting all my content to be available to both system and my network easily I decided to shrink the Windows 7 side, and use the 90 now free gigs to create a FAT32 Partition (using Partition Wizard after I had defragged the disk) The process runs fine, I boot back into Ubuntu where I have made my Windows 7 drive NTFS partition mount automatically, and I pull my videos and music to the new partition. At this point everything is going great till I fill the partition, and I decide to boot back into Windows to decide if I need to shrink windows to make the new partition any bigger. Well this time I go to GRUB hit windows and I get: Error: No Such Device: 01caab4e3c9fb9e0

I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:

I'm currently setting up a dell server with hardware raid 1 on sas 6r. i got 4 sas installed on the server and configured to raid 1 as stated below,
array 1:
slot 0 & 1
array 2:
slot 2 & 3
during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.

I'm using Kubuntu 9.10 with Ubuntu-desktop installed.I've been using kubuntu for sometime now but i dont know much technical things about it. I have two hard discs (160GB SATA and 80GB PATA).I have just installed Windows XP Professional and then reinstalled grub2 from a live CD. Both OS are on 80GB PATA drive.The Grub menu at boot time has "Windows XP Professional" entry in it. The problem is thatwhen i select that entry, i get an error saying:Quote:Grub:Error:No such device - "a string of letters and numbers"Press any key to continue...When i press any key, it goes back to the grub menu. Kubuntu and Ubuntu work fine.When i go to bios and change my hard disc boot order, grub is bypassed and Windows boots and works good. I dont know much technical things but i think maybe its the problem with Windows entry in grub. (something to do with lines map(hd0,hd1) and map(hd1,hd0) (But i'm nt sure. I just said wat i thought it might be)

i installed ubuntu 10.04 and it said i needed to install new drivers so i did, then i restarted and a black screen came up saying terminating programmes, it was like that for 20 minutes, so i just shut off my pc.now when i turn on my pc it comes up with " error : no such device ################# grub resuce> " now i can not load into windows neither linux.i dont mind loosing stuff i have on linux, but i can not risk loosing my stuff on windows

I have recently decided to try out Ubuntu(Lucid Lynx) using wubi. Everything was absolutely superb and realizing that I have a lot to learn and looking forward to it. Everything was fine until I updated and ticked 2 boxes for updating grub and restarted and couldn't boot into anything. I have xp on 80gb 2.6 celeron, and Ubuntu loaded through wubi on 320 gb external hard drive.

It may seem a little slow for me to put to the test your responses, because I will have to disconnect the PC that I am using and use those connections on the 2.6. This one I am using at the moment is 400hz p3.

yesterday i upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10. During installation i also upgraded grub to version 2. It said that there were two options that i could choose to boot and i choose both. Installation finished with out a hitch. When i attempted restart my laptop i got this message:
error: no such device: 12631218-8ac6-4505-b4cb-a66a1de1814f
grub rescue>
I tried the command help and received a message saying that the help command was not recognized. So i then gave Google a bit of a work out and have tried reinstalling grub and manually coping the grub files all to no avail. The problem i believe stems from how i have Ubuntu installed. I have Ubuntu installed like an application on windows 7 on a separate partition on my hard drive. Looking back on it i'm not to sure why i choose that route, but that is how it is installed.

I just installed Ubuntu on a separate hard drive alongside Vista, and after restarting, my computer booted to a screen that said, "error: no such device: xxxxx-xxxx-xxxxx-xxxx (I don't remember exact number, if I need them I'll go back and write em down) grub rescue>"
After a bit of searching I found this thread: [URL].. I tried the first part twice which didn't change anything, so I tried the last part which was too fix the vista bootloader, which worked perfectly, and now I can get into at least one operating system. Would anyone please help me get a bootloader working so I can choose between Ubuntu and Vista? Also, is it worth mentioning that right before the computer shut down after installation, I had a huge list of I/O errors?
EDIT: After further searching I read that the I/O errors were commonly because of a faulty cd or it was spinning too fast. I think my problem with that was that it was spinning too fast, it was incredible loud and there was a huge amount of wind coming out of my computer XD. iirc I have to go to the BIOS to change disc speed?
EDIT2: I think all my problems stem from a faulty CD. I remember setting the burning speed too the highest setting when I burnt the live CD, I guess I thought faster was better.

I am having trouble getting a dual boot setup on Ubuntu remix on a netbook. The install went fine, but then windows would not book. I had a windows error. So I reinstalled windows, and rebuilt grub. Now when I try to launch windows from the grub menu it says "error: no such device: 0a82ff1982ff0849". How do I go about fixing that? I can boot to Ubuntu fine now.

I downloaded wubi to install it on my old desktop which runs windows xp pro. The installation went through and it asked for some updates. After the updates, it rebooted but got stuck to the msg in the topic sentence. I don't have no live cd's for ubuntu and tried to read some earlier threads but they don't make any sense to me as I have no previous knowledge of linux. how to deal with this in a simpler language?

When I boot I briefly see 'Grub loading...' then I get dumped in 'sh:grub>'.
I can then boot up manually:
linux (hd0,1)/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1
initrd (hd0,1)/initrd.img
boot
I'm very new at this, so all my attempts at correcting it has been through reading posts turned up by google searches. Previously, I was dumped at the grub_rescue> prompt (have another thread about that, but I think this is a new issue, so I'm hoping making a new thread won't bring any mod's wrath down on my head), but that seemed to solve itself through no influence of mine...
What I've tried to solve the 'sh:grub>' issue:
In /etc/default/grub:
I tried disabling quiet splash, in hopes there would be some lines that would give me a clue as to what is going on, but it jumps directly from Grub loading to sh:grub>
I tried commenting out Grub_Hidden_Timeout and setting it to a positive integer. I tried uncommenting GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true
In /etc/grub.d/10_linux:
I tried commenting out 'if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi'
Then I tried typing 'search -f /boot/grub/grub.cfg' at the sh:grub> prompt and got 'error: no such device: /boot/grub/grub.cfg' which I guess meant all my previous attempts were void as grub couldn't even find grub.cfg. I've tried to reinstall grub with 'grub-install --recheck /dev/sda'. Then I found this thread and tried out "grub-setup -r '(hd0,1)' /dev/sda", hoping it would point to my grub.cfg as well. No such luck.

when it comes to linux, but like the idea and hope one day to get away from microsoft all together. This is the second time I have tried to install ubuntu on my eeepc 1000HG in addition to windows 7. The first version was karmic koala netbook remix, and yesterday it was lucid lynx netbook remix. Its annoying because before the update packages are downloaded and installed it runs smoothly, even additional applications run with no problem, but after restart to complete installation the following error message appears.

I have two partitions on my HDD. A Windows XP (hd0,2) and an Ubuntu 9.10 (hd0,1).I have been using the Windows mainly and ran a program that changes the HDD's serial number. Now when I boot up and Grub loads, I try to access the Windows partition and get the following error:
Error: No Such Device: 2e3857fb3857c08f
I am still able to boot the Ubuntu partition but can not seem to get grub to point to the Windows partition any more. This is very frustrating as I really need to get back into that partition soon.

I just upgraded from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 on a system dual booted with windows 7. Upon restarting, I get

And I'm left at the grub rescue> prompt. I don't have any rescue discs to save me - the only bootable cd I have is windows reinstallation.

I already had windows 7 installed on my raid. So I figured that I would install Ubuntu on my 250gb external. I burn it, boot to CD, and tell it to wipe and install the external hdd. After installation it prompts me to take out the CD, then press enter for it to restart. It restarts, gets all the way through and then says:
Error: no such device: f8b79a59-3c13-408a-b332-dd5e9dc37729. Grub rescue>
I am unfamiliar with this issue, and would have looked for a fix on my windows side, but now I am unable to boot into my windows side at all.

I had a working dual boot Ubuntu 10 and Windows 7. Anyways long story short, I got it working again but have lost the boot option for windows 7. If i run fdisk -l, I get the following.
root@support-Latitude-E6400:/home/support# fdisk -l

I installed gparted and can see that windows 7 is installed in dev/sda6. In another forum, i read that someone had to edit their menu.lst so i did with the following.

makeactive
chainloader +1
When i try to boot from windows 7, i get the following error. Error 12: invalid device request. How can i get my laptop to boot from windows again?

I had Ubuntu installed, i installed Debian and there was no dual boot. So i formated all the hard disk to install only Debian. It installed but at boot i get error: no such device and the grub rescue> prompt. i googled for a solution and nothing worked:
- i tryed reinstalling grub, not worked
- i did the windows cd fixmbr trick, not worked
- reinstalled debian with fixmbr the first step and nothing
- tryed deleting with dd the mbr, not worked
- reinstalled grub from debian rescue, not worked
what should i do? i can't access my computer? please tell me how should i fix it? the google guys will kill me because i put their servers on fire

Have installed ubuntu on a separate partition on single hard disk and system initially worked on a dual boot basis with windows xp. However after installing most recent series of updates computer is failing to boot.

I installed Xubuntu 10.04, and it was working somewhat smoothly(little drivers, but I could see and hear). Ran the update(as of 3 hours ago), and started up the machine. Here is what greeted me. I was having ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop installed as "WUBI"(installed inside windows). Very recently(yesterday) i had some package upgrades showing up. I installed the upgrades, among them one was called "GRUB PC". I though it was a normal gurb update. what i see is the my windows boot loader also has been corrupted and GRUB cant access my UBUNTU also. The error which i get is this

Tonight for the first time I tried to use Linux (Ubuntu). I installed it on to a small 100gb external HDD that I had just laying around. I thought I could do this without impacting my internal hard drive. I thought I could run Windows 7 normally when it wasn't plugged in and chose between Windows 7 or Ubuntu when it was. I installed it correctly (or atleast I thought). It worked fine but I then noticed I could only boot into Ubuntu or Windows 7 when it was plugged in. Having a laptop and going everywhere with it I could not tolerate it. When I tried to boot the system without the External HDD plugged in I would always get a "GRUB Rescue-No such Device" error and a white command line.
Confused I looked up how to uninstall Ubuntu, I got a windows recovery disc and deleted the partion off the External HDD. I then changed the BIOS settings so the CD would be booted first, well for whatever reason I get the same GRUB Error. It seems like I cannot boot into any CD Rom. Neither a recovery disc nor a Live CD. I got so frustrated I tried to system restore but it appears like the key command for that is also not working. I can't boot into anything and I'm stuck with the same Grub error. Im so confused and frustrated...I'm thinking about taking It to a pro and paying them to get it fixed or just calling it quits. I have no idea what I can do if Ibcan't boot from any CDs or any OSs.

I was dual-booting Ubuntu 11.04 just fine for about the last week but then ran into some issues and decided to reinstall Ubuntu. Now after the install I get this error: error: nu such device: d38af2a9-740e-4d3c-b267-2a3848e5d319 and it goes into the grub rescue command prompt screen. I have tried to reinstall Ubuntu about 6 times now, complete installs. I have tried changing boot priority multiple times. I installed off a thumb drive and left the thumb drive in after install, took it out after install.

I have a dual boot system with ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7. Everything has been working fine for a a long time but yesterday I tried to delete an unused partition through the Disk Utility in ubuntu (System->Adminstration->Disk Utility) and everything was messed up. I used to get the "Grub error: Unknown filesystem". I managed to create an ubuntu bootable usb and followed some tutorials for fixing grub but all i managed to do is to get another error: "Grub error: No such disc". After some experimentation i got
"Grub stage 1.5" which gave me a grub> command prompt./dev/sda is the drive containing Windows and Ubuntu.

I am new to Linux. I have installed RHEL 5.4 on my PC with preloaded Windows XP.
Windows was set as the first boot kernel. So if i do not choose which OS to be loaded it will load Windows by Default.
Today I got an error saying GRub Loading Stage2 read error.

Since May 12,2009. Our system lifekeeper has the error log "lifekeeper error: DEVICE FAILURE on SCSI device '/dev/add'", but it ran normally. Until last week, it failover to the standby server. The disk still running, the error still come out.

When I try and boot my Debian computer I get the messages: Grub Loading stage1.5. Grub loading, please wait... Error 15 Is there any way of recovering from this - or is it simply a fresh install? I was attempting an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and despite a few hurdles it looked like it was all happening. Got the new kernel loading, and the new grub. It looked as though grub2 was working so I ran the grub-remove-legacy-support command (something like that) and now my computer won't boot grub or Linux.
I'm assuming the MBR on my harddrive is lost, however I don't know what state the partition is in. I'm guessing that maybe this has been lost as well. I tried a few tools from the Ultimate Boot CD but nothing here was able to re-install my grub or boot from any partition or even mount my file-system. I'm fearing the worst but would like it confirmed before I blow it all away with a new install.

I just compiled my first own kernel (I'm using Arch Linux), following the tutorial on the german site. I simply copy&pasted the Arch-entry, i.e. I also had the disk by uuid there. The failure message was the same, just the root device name was the different name Also, at first I did not have the initrd line in my menu.lst (as written in my tutorial that I may not need it).
