Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Vanished After Trial To Repair Windows

Mar 8, 2011

I initially had a dual boot where I could decide to either boot into Windows 7 or Ubuntu 10.04. It work seamlessly. At some point, however, when I booted into Windows, it just seem to only load it "half" in the sense that the desktop just turned black (but when ctrl-alt-del was hit I did receive a screen with the different options).

I suspected there was a problem with grub and proceeded to restore the Windows bootloader by booting into the Windows CD and repairing the computer by entering the commands:

After restarting I suddenly do not have the option to boot into Ubuntu (where did it go?) and booting automatically into Windows the original problem persists.

Any idea what happened here and how I can restore things?

OpenSUSE Install :: Booting/Installation Error (noob?) System Repair #?

Apr 15, 2010

Im probally just being a noob here but for the projects sake I thought it would be good to identify this problem. I have an old advent laptop and I tried to install Opensuse from DVD on it. I followed the installation as normal but when I tried to boot it said some sort of check was forced and then I have to enter the admin/root password upon doing this I got the message system repair # in red. I have tried to repair the system through the installation DVD and tried re-installing it but I still get the same message.

Ubuntu Installation :: Possible To Move Grub2 To Other Drive And Repair Windows 7 Drive MBR?

Feb 5, 2011

So I install Ubuntu 10.10 on a multi-drive, dual boot with windows 7 computer. At almost the end of the install, I see "running grub-install sda" or whatever it is. sda is my windows drive. So rather than asking where to install the bootloader or give you the option like it used to, it just did it to my "first" drive.

What the hell? Now my Windows MBR is gone. I like to maintain that so if my linux drive dies I can still boot into windows via the old windows boot loader.Possible to move Grub2 to my other drive and repair windows 7 drive MBR?

General :: Repair Windows XP Or Windows 7 On Any PC?

Aug 18, 2010

What I'm looking to do is to use Linux to help me remove malware and etc. from any Windows based computer. We are currently using 32-bit Dell computers with Windows XP SP3. New computer orders are 64-bit Windows 7. Previously, I have used Ghost to create images, but it is getting harder to have all the different images saved and other criterias. My plan is to create an USB Linux boot with the Windows software to remove malware, trojans and all the others. I currently have an 8Gb USB flash drive to use for this project. I was looking at Puppy Linux, but I think there is something messing whether it be with puppy or me. I am not limiting myself to just this project. This just happens to be one selected and approved by my bosses. Since we are using both platforms in this school district -- Macs and PCs. Eventually, I should be able to use my laptop with at least a dual boot environment.

General :: Use A Distribution On A USB To Repair A Windows Registry?

Jan 15, 2009

Would it be possible to use a Linux Distribution on a USB to repair a windows registry problem, or to use Linux to change some files in the Restore files? If so can anyone recommend a version? I have a laptop running windows Xp that has no cd drive, keyboard, or mouse function due to a registry error. I have a good restore point with the correct registry entries that I could change if it would be possible to boot from a USB version of Linux.

Ubuntu :: Repair MBR Without Mess Up The Windows And Recovery Partitions

May 11, 2011

This post is a follow up to this one: [URL] My computer is an IBM R52 running Windows Professional (previously dual-booting with Ubuntu 10.10, but that's gone now, and I don't dare reinstall it until the HDD partitions and mbr are properly working again). I think that the shred command mentioned there simply messed up my MBR, and maybe my partition table. Here's the partitions on my HDD:

Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 60.0 GB, 60011642880 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 7296 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x7e93bd30
[Code]...

My question is, is it safe to use something like SuperGrub to repair the MBR? I really don't want to mess up the Windows and recovery partitions. I've done plenty of research on this, but am not confident until someone says that it works in my case.

Ubuntu :: Disk Formatted In Error - Boot Sector Repair

Nov 20, 2010

I was using the disk utility on Ubuntu 10.04 and wanted to make by 500GB external NTFS formatted USB drive into 1 x 50GB FAT32 and 1 x 450GB NTFS. I clicked the option that said format or create a partition and it basically wiped the whole thing in a split second leaving me with 500GB of seemingly empty space. Obviously the files are still there but I cannot boot the drive to view anything. I have downloaded testdisk, but don't know how to use it, but I am sure there is a relatively simple solution here. I am currently repairing the boot sector of the drive as Test Disk showed the drive as "no type" i.e. not FAT/NTFS/ext4 etc., but shows the correct amount of used space though, but I cannot view anything err go, I cannot use the undelete command as yet.

Fedora Installation :: Error, Saying I Had Bad Sector(s) The Error Told Me To Run Chkdsk /f /r In Windows, Then I Could Run Ntfsresize With -b, (in Linux)

Feb 22, 2009

I have the DVD installer of Fedora 10, i want to dual boot with windows vista. well i get up to the partitioning part of installation (in anconda) and it asks me how i want to partition it... i wanted to re size my partition and create the default format, so i keyd in 70GB and Okay. then it came up with an error, saying I had bad sector(s) The error told me to run chkdsk /f /r in windows, then i could run ntfsresize with -b, (in Linux) well i did all those steps, and shrunk /dev/sda1 to 70gb (/dev/sda2 is my recovery partition) i have a 140 gb hard drive, but can't find the unallocated space anywhere!

when i booted windows, it ran a chksdk, like it should, and in my computer it said that it had been shrunk (because the pie graph showed a capacity of around 70GB) When i go into windows disk management it says no unallocated space, just one big partition (and a 8gb recovery partition) this is the same with GParted on puppy linux, GParted on fedora 10 (live cd) says there is no drives I can mount or unmount and same error on partition logic... in EASUS partition manager i get told that there is no unallocated space, in the fedora installer there is only /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. Does anybody know.. how to install fedora on this partition, or get rid of the partition and repartition it another way. when i click on the option to remove all linux partitions and create default format, it errors and says it cannot make another primary partition, then says there is no room for /boot. and i can not proceed.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error 29: Disk Write Error Then Trying Again Windows Seems To Boot But It Takes Much Longer

Aug 17, 2010

i finally decided to updgrade from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx. for this i made a backup of my old install, then i couldnt find my Lucid CD so i used a Karmic one to partition my old ext3 to ext4. There were some errors but after trying a few times it worked. Installed Karmic, rebooted (worked fine), downloaded all updates - (did NOT reboot to let updates take effect) and upgraded to Lucid.

Everything went fine so far. Now when i try to boot into Lucid the system hangs, i've also got a windowsXP partition on there so i tried booting that, first grub tells me Error 29: Disk write error then trying again windows seems to boot but it takes much longer than it should and seems to hang.

Then i tried Karmic and Lucid LiveCD (which i found in the meantime) none of the LiveCDs make it to boot after about 20 minutes. (previously they worked fine)looking at the errors it seems to be something about the harddrive. Why the harddrive would stop the LiveCD booting is a mystery to me but the same messages appear when i select Recovery from the Grub menu so i guess the problem is related.

[Code]...

Ubuntu Installation :: Error Message: "Windows Boot Manager / Windows Failed To Start...."

Mar 30, 2011

I have a single harddisk partitioned with Ubuntu Maverick and Windows 7 installations. I installed Windows first and then Ubuntu, after resizing partitions and adding a new one for Ubuntu. Win7 did not appear in the Grub2 boot menu. I added it (sda3), but on rebooting, I get the message "BOOTMGR is missing/Press Ctrl+Alt_Del to restart".

I understand that Win7 might have put its boot manager in another partition, and sda1 had FAT. I added sda1 as another grub2 entry, but when I try that, I get the error message "Windows Boot Manager/ Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause... Status 0xc0000225/ Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible." Attached are fdisk and parted outputs; and the grub2 files I created. How do I get Windows 7 to boot up?

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Repair Broken Grub2

This guide: [URL]. Says how to repair grub2 using grub2 live CD. Currently I have access to a 6.10 Ubuntu CD but when I try to mount the boot partition I get an error saying that the filesystem has unknown options. I think that the latest filesystem didn't exist back then and even if that would work. Can I reinstall grub2 using grub? Or is there any possibility to download an ultra small linux live system image with grub2? it seems all ubuntu variations come in 500MB+ packs.

Ubuntu :: Repair Broken Installation Without Reinstalling?

Oct 23, 2010

I think a recent update to 10.04 somehow has broken my installation. When I turn on the machine, it just sits at the splash screen with the white dots turning orange from left to right as if it is going to boot up.

I have tried letting it sit there but after half an hour it still remains the same. I have tried booting into recovery mode but that fails somewhere along the startup process. Is there a way to 'repair broken installation' when booting up with live cd? I have been able to get to that option and I am trying to avoid doing a fresh install if possible.
