Red Hat / Fedora :: Uninstalling 11 And Use Windows XP - Fixmbr Command Doesn't Do Anything

Feb 8, 2010

Now I would like to uninstall it and use Windows XP instead. But when booting from the winxp disk, the only partition I can see, is the flash drive I am installing from. I was told to uninstall grub, but the fixmbr command doesn't do anything for me.

Ubuntu Installation :: Restore Grub After Using Fixmbr In Windows?

Sep 1, 2010

I need to use the fixmbr command to fix my windows installation. I'd like to restore grub to its former state after doing so. I have searched how to do this and since my configuration differs slightly, I'd rather get more specific instructions. Right now this is what menu.lst looks like:

Code:
titleUbuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-21-generic
root(hd0,2)
kernel/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-21-generic root=UUID=0c5d1c9c-70bb-4f61-a0ad-7dc5e59d9713 ro quiet splash

OpenSUSE Install :: Use Windows System Recovery Console And Committing Fixmbr And Fixboot Commands?

Jan 21, 2010

I've been using opensuse 11.2 and windows xp at parallel. After I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying "invalid partition table" after the first restart of windows xp installation.

I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work.

After all, i boot with opensuse livecd to run the grub and got my opensuse back.

How can I installed windows on a opensuse installed system? My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.

Slackware :: Command For Uninstalling Packages By Program Name?

Aug 19, 2010

how to uninstall packages via the program name? For example, if I want to uninstall the program "KWordQuiz" then I would usually have to use the command removepkg -package name But unfortunately I have a fresh install and want to get rid of a lot of programs. So instead of using the package repository and finding each package which would take days (maybe) and removing them individually I'd like to remove a program and all its supporting packages. I am probably just rambling on... Umm, so yes is there a way, or do I have to suck it up and sit at the keyboard for days.

Ubuntu Networking :: LSUSB Command Doesn't Work As Well As Windows Wireless Drivers?

Sep 1, 2011

I can get the command program to work, but not the desktop program to work. Windows Wireless Driver was working, but now every time I try to start it, it won't load, and will just be an empty window. This happened after I tried to installed a driver (which was the wrong one), and I restarted the computer. After this happened, I tried to reinstall the program, but to no avail.

The command program works, but I can't use the command lsusb, because it just pauses and doesn't do anything. Do I have to wait for it to kick in. I'm pretty sure that this is not it, because when I try the lspci, this works fine (but it's not the one I need). Please help, and don't make any stupid replies.

Ubuntu :: Uninstalling Windows 7 - Remove Wubi?

Jun 8, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu Wubi for a few weeks now and am quite happy with it, and I am not missing Windows 7. This is not my first contact with Linux OS. In fact I have tinkled with Red Hat, SuSe and Fedora quite a few years back but never pursued them seriously as I found them difficult to use. Many people seem to be saying that "if you want to uninstall Ubuntu, just go to Windows Control Panel and uninstall Wubi like you would any other application and it will remove Wubi " But what if I wanted to uninstall Windows 7 and leave Ubuntu on the hard disk? Would I need to start from square one and re-install Ubuntu again?

Ubuntu :: Uninstalling Without Hurting Windows 7 Files

Nov 26, 2010

I just got a new laptop for school work and I've loaded Ubuntu onto it without issue. Now I'd like to free up some space on my desktop to use it primarily as a gaming computer. I had Windows 7 installed long before I installed Ubuntu and I figured that uninstalling Ubuntu would be as simple as just deleting the hard drive partition but I can't see the partition in My Computer like I thought I would and when I googled how to do it I kept hearing people talk about Grub, which I have completely no understanding of. I just want to delete Ubuntu without harming the programs I have installed on my Windows partition.

Ubuntu :: Windows Partition Not Detected And Uninstalling 11.04

Jul 23, 2011

i had windows 7 pre-installed in my laptop. i installed ubuntu 11.04 by making a bootable disk and did the partitioning so that both windows and ubuntu boot options would come on startup. however , when i switch on the laptop . the options do not come and ubuntu boots as if it is the default. i thought this might be due to a problem with grub 2 so i re-installed it. yet there was no difference. i want to uninstall ubuntu now. but how do it? most guides require me to access windows and create a rescue disk and changing the MBR. but since i cant access my windows partition this isnt an option. so there are 2 options for me - to make grub detect windows during boot and then use windows to make the MBR rite or to delete the system files of ubuntu to make it unbootable?

General :: Uninstalling From Windows 7 PC - Grub Error 22

Mar 15, 2010

I installed Backtrack 4 and it is set up as a dual boot with my Windows 7 x64 bit. I want to uninstall Backtrack because I am going to put it on a different computer. The problem is - I can't do it. My laptop is an Asus K61IC, and it doesn't come with an installation CD, because the OS was factory installed. It comes with a recovery wizard instead, which gives me the options to 1) recover to first partition only, 2) recover to entire HD, and 3) recover to entire HD with 2 partitions. Because of Grub and it asking for me to choose what operating system to boot when I start my computer, when I recover Windows 7 to the entire HD and try to boot, it gives me Grub error 22. I need to fix my MBR so that the grub menu is also deleted and all of Backtrack 4 is removed, actually letting me back onto my Windows 7. I need a way to delete the Linux partition, and fix the MBR, but I don't know how to do that because I don't have an installation disk.

General :: Windows - BSOD While Uninstalling Software And While Trying To Reinstall OS

Jun 28, 2010

I got BSOD while attempting to uninstall a program in Win XP, so I tried to reinstall the OS (because the guy who gave me the pc wants a clean-up) but a STOP 0x0000007F (0x00000008, 0x80042000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) occurs.I tried then to boot Kubuntu 9.04 live cd, and it booted fine, but when I tried an installation it failed too: just crashing...

I tried to change the RAM and the hard drives to no avail.I'm thinking that it's an hardware failure, but can't track it down: what could it be? Video card? Motherboard?

EDIT: I ran 7 successful memtest - not even an error. I have to look at the harddisk ribbons and the motherboard.

EDIT No.2: I tried another harddrive, switching to sata connectors to no avail: the sata harddisk it isn't even recognized...Can it be the video card, or it will be the Motherboard?

Fedora :: Resizing Partitions Without Uninstalling OS?

Mar 22, 2011

I made quite a bit of partitions of different Linux distributions in an attempt to compile a massive program. (To those who do a bit of weather research, I'm trying to compile both WRF and WPS on 64 bit Linux.) I finally compiled the program on 64 bit Fedora 14, and now I'm running out of space on this partition. Is there a way to increase the size of a partition without uninstalling the current OS? I don't mind what happens to the other partitions, but I put quite a bit of effort in this current one. Also, the program demands that all of the data be contained in the same home directory, so I can't keep files in other partitions.

Fedora :: Ksysguard Won't Run After Uninstalling NVidia Driver

Dec 7, 2010

I installed the proprietary nVidia driver on my Fedora 14 x86_64 laptop, but then went back to the nouveau driver. Now System Monitor won't launch. From the command line I get:

$ ksysguard
ksysguard: error while loading shared libraries: libnvidia-tls.so.260.19.21: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I reinstalled it, which went without error, but I still get the same error as above. I also tried installing libnvidia-tls, but yum just said there is no such package. Of course, the package is part of the nVidia proprietary driver package, but I don't want to reinstall that. I have the KDE desktop installed, but normally I boot to Gnome. How can I get ksysguard to run again?

Fedora :: Compile From Source - Install Buddi Budget Manager And The ./configure Command Doesn’t Work

Nov 24, 2009

Ive been using linux for a few months now and every now and again i come accross a program that doesnt have a rpm package but says that it can be installed on Fedora using source. I'm familiar with build essentials and the following commands:-

tar xzvf package.tar.gz
cd package
./configure
make
make install

but from what i have read fedora uses a differnet compiler. I'm trying to install Buddi budget manager and the ./configure command doesnt work, which im guessing is because it doesnt have a configure file? Can anyone confirm how to compile from source and whether there are any tutorials specific to fedora.
