Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Upgrade Will Not Start XP On Second Hard Drive

May 8, 2010

I upgraded 9.10 to 10.04 via the weekly update reminder. All went went on the install and the GRUB menu looks normal; however, the bottom line is Windows XP and when selected will not load Win XP on a separate hard drive. As soon as I click the XP line, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor in the top left corner. It remains in that condition as long as the desktop has power. What other information can I provide to get some help bringing up XP?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Start Up Windows On 2nd Hard Drive After Upgrade To 10.04 / Fix It?

Jun 6, 2010

I just upgraded to 10.04. I went with the option of upgrading grub as well, should of just stuck with the old one I guess. I have 2 seperate physical hard drives, and now I can't get vista running on my other drive. I get to grub, choose the run vista option, and now it just blinks one underscore line in the top left corner of the black screen, and goes nowhere. When I was installing the upgrade, and when I got to the grub upgrade i tried to upgrade all teh different options in grub. All of them worked except the last one, and it warned me, that one of boot options in grub didn't install properly and may cause my OS not to start up. I guess that must of been the vista option.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 10.04 On 8Gb USB Hard Drive?

May 11, 2010

I have a Dell Latitude D630 onto which I applied an installation of Ubuntu 9.10 on an 8GB external USB hard disk (mechanical, not FLASH) with now problems. It has been working beautifully, but I upgraded last night to Ubuntu 10.04. I had it run overnight and believe that I ran out of hard disk space, as I have less than 100MB left on the drive.

-I'd like to ensure that the installation completed properly so that I can run it for further modification/repair/reinstall.

-I know that this free space is inadequate and would like to either properly remove unneeded files or restart with a minimal installation of Ubuntu 10.04.

General :: Installation - Wipe Hard Drive To Start Over

Aug 8, 2011

I had Ubuntu on my hard drive and tried to install Arch Linux. Things got messy and I now have an unstable, unbootable machine. I feel the installation failed because there were remains of Ubuntu. I'd like to wipe the hard drive and start over from scratch; without anything on there. How do I do this? I have several partitions made in a desperate attempt to make it all work. So I'd like to remove all partitions and any other information that's on the drive. I can not start any OS, but I can boot with the Live USB of Arch Linux...

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Start Computer Without External Hard Drive Plugged In

Jan 12, 2010

I finally got my new internal hdd for my laptop. I plugged it in and installed windows 7 64 bit. Then I partitioned my external hdd (WD mybook 640gb), and installed ubuntu 9.1 on a 200gb partition of it. The problem is that I didn't unplug the internal hdd before I installed ubuntu. Now the computer will not start unless I have the external hard drive plugged in.

So what should I do so that I will be able to go into windows 7 normally if the external hdd is unplugged? I would also like to be able to use ubuntu when I plug in the external hdd. I wouldn't mind having to go to the boot menu and choosing the external hard drive every time I wanted to use ubuntu.

The reason I partitioned the external hard drive was because it has a lot more space than my 250gb internal hdd, and I also wanted to leave space open to use as was intended, to back up stuff.

However, now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind partitioning the internal hdd and just leaving the external blank (which I should have done in the first place).

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 9.04 To 10.04 Using A Clonezilla Hard Drive Partition?

Apr 1, 2011

I'm trying to "upgrade" from ubuntu 9.04 to ubuntu 10.04.2 via a clonezilla (using a maverick usb clonezilla software with it's vmlinuz and initrd.img). but this clonezilla is not from a bootable usb flash drive, usb drive or CD, it's from the hard drive.

Here's what I have:

1) one 500gig drive with a primary partition under LVM. this partition has a 490gig root partition (ubuntu-root) and a 10 gig swap partition (ubuntu-swap_1). It has an extended partition (/dev/sda2) that's not under LVM consisting of one logical drive (/dev/sda5) that is the /boot partition.

2) I've upgraded the grub to grub2 (version 1.96) which has better features.

3) I've deleted the swap and reconfigured this partition with a name of (livehd) and it has an ext3 filesystem. I've copied the clonezilla software to this partition which also has the ubuntu 10.04.2 image that I want to restore to the root partition.

4) I've modified the existing grub2 using the 40-custom file so that the grub menu has the "Clonezilla Ubuntu 10.04.2 upgrade" entry in it.

5) the initrd.img from clonezilla has LVM support since I opened up the image to a directory using "gzip -d -c /boot/initrd.img|cpio -i" to check it.

6) grub2 sees the (ubuntu-root), (ubuntu-livehd), (hd0,1), (hd0), and (hd0,5) devices and can list (ls) their directories

General :: Can't Start The Box Unless External Hard Drive Attached

Jul 21, 2010

I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 onto an external hard drive connected by USB to my laptop:

sdd partition
Windoze still resides on the box's internal hard drive:
sda2 partition

I also partitioned the internal hard drive so that I have a repository where my documents etc can be accessed by either linux or windoze:
sda3 partition (FAT32) I'm assuming that Grub is on the external drive somewhere - as is probably now the Windoze MBR. I'd like to be able to give my wife the ability to start the box (and boot into Windoze) when the external drive is not attached (so that she doesn't have to take the latter with her when she needs to be mobile with the computer). What do I need to do to move grub and the MBR back onto the laptop's internal drive? Or, I suppose: What do I need to do to obtain the functionality that I'm looking for? I'm getting somewhat more comfortable with the command line but, I still need a bit of hand-holding

Red Hat :: Won't Start Macbook Nvidia SATA Hard Drive

Jan 22, 2011

I have REHL 6 Desktop. I have a macbook pro 7,1 with nvidia graphics and (I believe)a nvidia sata controller. I have fedora currently installed with no problems during or after installation ( with a few drivers of of course).

When I boot with the disk i burned ( works on other computers) it comes up of a list of devices to select and when i select local CDROM or DVD it goes to select drivers. So, then I tried "burning" the installation files to an external hard drive then I used the DVD to boot and selected Hard Disk then selected SDB1 (path of external HD). With this method I get to the Graphic installation screen and can go to the part were it says custom partitioning. I select ok then it say the only disk that is available is SDB1 (EXTERNAL).

Today i turn on my laptop and see the usual hp screen. But after that it goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore looking thing. It goes nowhere from there. Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 On External Hard Drive Drive?

Jun 19, 2011

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation

Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.

General :: Move Smaller Hard Drive To Partition On A Larger Hard Drive?

Mar 16, 2010

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.

Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

Ubuntu Installation :: Full Installation On USB External Hard Drive?

I disconnect my internal Windows hard drive first. Then run the installer from the Desktop CD. Everything works great. This is approximately the steps I take: I reboot, everything is good. I reconnect my internal hard drive, boot to Windows, reboot back to Kubuntu, everything is still good. I run updates and follow the instructions of the Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto. I reboot again, still no problems. At this point, I figure everything is OK and I have no worries. I boot to Windows and do some work in that environment. The next time I boot to the external Kubuntu hard drive, I get the following errors:

Ubuntu Installation :: Installation On External Hard Drive Fail

Jan 10, 2011

My original intention was to install a distribution of Ubuntu onto an external hard drive so i can use it on different computers. I first downloaded and burned a copy of Ubuntu 10.10 and booted my Acer laptop to it. I then plugged in my external hard drive and tried to install ubuntu onto it by partitioning the external hard drive. After I did that, I booted from the external hard drive on my laptop and it ran the new distribution i created. However, when I tried to boot it from a different computer it said something like "partition not found." So the next time I tried to install ubuntu onto the external hard drive with out partitioning it, using the entire drive. This is what started to cause problems.

Now when I start up my laptop without the external hard drive plugged in i get "error: no such device: xxxx..... grub rescue>. When I start it up with the hard drive plugged in a grub comes up with the new installation, my old ubuntu installation, and my old windows vista.

Ubuntu :: Cannot See My Hard Drive During Installation?

Jul 3, 2010

I decided to migrate my PC over to it the problem is though ubuntu cannot seem to find my hard drive when it comes to ask about the Partition Table. At the moment my hard drive is running Windows 7. When I boot into ubuntu from the Live CD I can see the drive in there and browse it so it doesn't look like a driver issue to me.My next though was maybe the install CD was broken to I downloaded it again and wrote to a fresh CD...same thing. I also get an error during boot saying "An unrecoverable error has occurred" but it then continues to boot (this is when booting to the Live CD not windows).

So I then thought OK, I'll try and install Kubuntu then install Gnome over the top of it...same thing on Kubuntu. No error message this time but when it comes to asking me to setup the partitions I just get a blank screen.
