ICEauthority file, in which everytime I started up, it gave me a message about this and that (the problem with that was the general problem with .ICEauthority stuff, I couldn't get in my computer and it said that nautilus needed certain folders and so on). But thats not the problem here, I went through every single Ubunty forum post about fixing the .ICEauthority thing, and non of them worked. So I unistalled nautilus in the terminal, then re-installed nautilus in the terminal. And now when I start the computer up, it doesn't have the .ICEauthority message anymore, it has nothing! A blank screen with a cursor! What did I do?

I've recently upgraded to Lucid, [url]
E.g., if I log in to a normal Gnome session, I have no panel or any controls whatsoever, just the desktop background and nothing else. Mouse works, but no mouse click of any sort brings up any menu. The only keystroke combo that works is CTRL-ALT-DEL which lets me cleanly reboot.
Logging in to Gnome-Failsafe works fine (that's where I am now). Even if I reconfigure the graphics in failsafe, however, it doesn't seem to fix the problem next reboot.
First question: What do I have to do to copy the working Gnome-failsafe info to Gnome regular?
Second question: What should I do to start the graphic config again from scratch? I'm guessing my problem might have something to do with my having an older Nvidia card and getting conflicts between the proprietary drivers and the 'nouveau' open source drivers, and my current efforts to fix things have probably left a mess of config files somewhere, but I'm not entirely up on how these things are configured nowadays, and understand that /etc/X11/xorg.conf isn't all there is to it anymore. (I used to know how to muck about with this stuff, but because the Ubuntu developers have done such fabulous work in getting things so they 'just work', users like me have had the luxury of not having to worry about figuring it out ourselves for quite a while; thanks are definitely in order there!)

I am a brand new Ubuntu user that just tried to install on an old PC using the 10.10 desktop edition.During installation, I hit an error that the bootloader could not install, and after reading about it on the forums, opted to attempt to install it manually after. I have followed the tutorial located here,[URL].. on reinstalling GRUB2 from the liveCD, which I assume means to boot with the installation CD and select try Ubuntu (given the only other option is install, which I have tried twice) everything up to step 5 in that tutorial seems to run successfully, and I am given a message it is installed, but then when I reboot the system it does not open the GRUB2 menu, rather the CLI interface, which suggests there is no grub.cfg
So I am unable to refresh at the GRUB menu because that command is not recognized by the CLI (and it may not help if I am missing files, so I might have screwed up reinstalling them in step 5, or maybe the "Try Ubuntu" terminal doesn't alter the computer like I thought?)

I cannot install the newest Ubuntu, 64 or 32-bit. On the amd release, the intro with the five red dots appears, then it goes into a white background with multiple light-purple random lines, and quits there. On the 32-bit release, the purple screen appears with no menu, with an error message. My system has an AMD64 processor, two hard disks: one for Windows, one for Linux. I used to have Ubuntu Hardy Heron on it (not the LTS version), so I erased the drive.

I burned and checked the image, but cannot install or upgrade ( I DL both the full and alternate image) Hangs on the Ubuntu screen with the scrolling dots. After this, I tried mounting and running the install from the iso, but since all the files are either .inf or unknown, I don't know how. Next, I tried a trick from the ubuntu site using alt+F2 to run from the iso, and it seemed to work, but now it still tries to DL the updates from the internet instead of just getting them from the ISO. This also happens now if I try to upgrade from the update manager, it keeps asking for the install disk. Is there any way to just use the ISO as though it were a disk? I have been running 9.10 for months with no problems.

I recently received a HP Pavilion dv9000 that the previous owner swore had some issues with it. I'm not so sure it had issues, but that's another story. Anyways, I downloaded Unbuntu 10.10 and burned it to a disk. The first time I booted up the machine I told it I wanted to try Ubuntu. I then left the machine and came back in 20min or so and it looked like it had successfully booted. However I quickly realized the screen was frozen. So I turned off the machine and decided I'd try again a few days later. Today I booted up the machine and I get to a black screen with Ubuntu on it with five dots below the wording. It freezes on this screen. I've rebooted several times but I keep getting to the same screen before it freezes.

I have a pretty old acer lap top. I used to run xubuntu on it, then I formatted it and installed freeBSD just to check them out. I tried to install last version of xubuntu then, and I got a message that /dev/../loop0 couldn' d mount or sth then I learned about lubuntu and I tried to installed them but I tried both a dvd and a cd and on both cases after I select language and "install on this machine" I just see a screen with 4 red dots writing "Ubuntu 10.10" that stays like this forever.. and nothing happens. the same if I select to boot from the cd just to check the environment. I then tried a ubuntu-studio dvd I had handy just to see if this would work - and it started installing as expecting, I cancelled it after a while. how to get lubuntu running?

Neomagic 256ZX(I think) video card, 256 MB RAM Well, after the upgrade went fine, I rebooted and was greeted by a purple 10.4 screen, after which I was greeted with a blank screen with 6 blinking dots. I don't know if this is a new video driver failure (its a pretty old laptop, theres no need for new drivers) or if its a grub problem. Since I can't get to a grub it goes BIOS>Purple 10.4>nothing and I don't get a terminal login, the laptop is now considered bricked. However I was okay with the install and was wondering if theres a way to fix it.

Trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 desktop (amd64) on this brand new system:
I connected the Dell ST2410 24" Full HD Widescreen LCD to the HDMI port on the ATI card and Windows 7 boots up just fine.
So then I put in the "ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso" CD in drive and reboot the system. I see the Ubuntu logo with the dots for a while and then the LCD goes black. The LCD reports that there is no signal from the system. The power light in front of the LCD goes from white to amber. The keyboard stops responding.
I power off everything, remove the Ubuntu CD and reboot the system and it works fine again with Windows 7.
The CD has no problems. At boot time, I checked it for defects and it reports no errors. At boot time, I used this same CD to check the system for memory errors. No memory errors. I used the same CD to install Ubuntu on other systems and had no problems.
The 16X DVDRW Drive has no problems. In Windows 7 it can play CDs and DVDs.

On inspection I find that my collection of video files is a mixture of .flv and .mp4 formats. The latter play OK on my A110 network media player but the latter do not. There is no sound from either but I think that is another problem as VLC works well on all of them.
My question assuming I cannot get the media player to play .flv files is should I convert to mp4 and will the HD files suffer as a result? If it is OK to convert, which program to use. My system is openSUSE 11.4 with KDE desktop.

I have just did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I am planning to go to 10.04 . After the upgrade everything was ok but I noticed the GRUB was still legacy. So I updated my GRUB to GRUB2. Now when I boot, after entering my logon-id and password, it just brings me back to the login-id screen (to logon on). Any indication of what is wrong and how I should fix this ?
I have no encryptions. [added comments] Currently reading thread about login loop bug with 9.10 Followed instructions about possible missing pre-release update but even if it did do updates, I am still login screen looping. Doing additional researches until someone answers with the fix.
did :
CTRL + ALT + F1 switch to one virtual console
sudo service gdm stop
[Code]...

I am looking for an easy way to convert any given maze.txt of any size to a internal array of strings(dynamically allocated). Important is that dimensions of the maze (row, col) shouldn't be written by the user instead they have to be somehow read from the file. This is not my homework assignment! It is a small part of a project that i never dealt with. I never read files to C string.... I made it for specific maze dimensions, but want it to work with any given .txt file.

I have been using ubuntu wel a long time now and I know my way around in linux but I recently updated my laptop from ubuntu 10.04 to ubuntu 10.10 all went fine until I had to restart my laptop. I got a purple screen (loading screen) with 4 dots and a oldskool like font which said: Ubuntu 10.10 Right after that the screen goes purple and its like the system halts I hear no login sound etc just a purple screen. So I did a clean install from the 10.10 live cd which booted perfectly fine and the system was also useable like before. But when I installed the system and rebooted it again no problems.
But when I tried to install the proprietary nvidia driver (the recommended one) I got the same problem again the purple screen. After searching a while on the internet I only found posts which had the problem with ATI cards but my laptop is fitted with a Nvidia Geforce 9300 M card. So I tried several things like removing the xorg.conf (read it somewhere) which ofcourse did not work, and booting in graphics fail safe mode which worked. So the point is in 10.04 and 9.10 I CAN use my video card drivers but not in 10.10 is there a solution to this problem? I am talking about the 32 bit version of ubuntu and here's my system hardware profile:
Intel core 2 duo t7350 @ 2,0 ghz / 3mb l2 cache
2 GB DDR3 ram
160 gb hdd
Nvidia 9300m gs
Chipset: I dont know sorry
Model: Samsung R710

I'm trying to install (L)ubuntu on an old AMD 1.66GHz based HP laptop, to dual boot with Windows XP. However I'm running into an issue that I haven't come across on any other machine before where after selecting "Install Lubuntu" from the main boot menu, it moves to the scrolling dots splash/loading screen and after ~30 sec or a minute it freezes. There is no error, it doesn't reboot or eject the disk even after several hours of sitting on that splash screen, with the dots frozen, no CD activity, and no HDD activity. I get the same result if I try to boot it as a LiveCD as well.
Can someone help diagnose whats going on? Is it possible changing some boot options will allow it to install? I'm not quite sure where to go with this one.

After an automatic upgrade on Saturday and Sunday. Now during booting, the screen is black until eventually the desktop appears. Well, almost black-- early on there is a quick flash in the top left corner of the screen, I think it says "acpid client 0.0 disconnected".The desktop comes up and seems to work just fine.
What is it that puts the "Ubuntu" and Five Red Dots on the screen, is it grub2, or is it gdm, or X, or is it some other "in between" process? (Sometimes in the past I have gotten the text-only "Ubuntu 10.10" instead of the graphic 5 dots. At that time I was thinking it was something about grub2 not dealing with my monitor resolution properly. But I'm not so sure)
