Ubuntu Installation :: Does Not Detect The Presence Of CdROM

I have just had my Ubuntu 10.04.2 Luci installed under my Windows OS. Things seem to be fine until I find out next that my copy of Ubuntu does not detect the presence of the cdROM which installed the software itself on my desktop machine.
I have tried searching high and low for clue in this forum, tried all the recommended tricks to find out at last that there is no cdROM listed under my DISK UTILITY and when I input the following comman,
sudo lshw -class disk -class storage I only happened to see my hard drive and some USD drives being listed.
Also, Brasero Disc Burner does not detect the presence of a cd/ DVD rom devices.

I am attempting to install debian for the first time on my pc that has no cdrom drive. I downloaded the Jessie CD image and wrote it to a 4GB stick, it didnt work. Then tried the netinstall image but face the same issue.
To write the usb stick I used unetbooting first, then tried win32diskimager and finally tried DD while stick was not mounted
Code: Select alldd if=debian.iso of=/dev/sdb BS=4MB; sync
Issue is still the same: I boot from the usb and after selecting language and keyboard it fails to detect cdrom drive (no drive at all in my pc). Same behavior using normal or expert mode.
Im also unable to manually specify the drive (it looks at /cdrom and I wanted to change it to the usb stick itself or mount usb to /cdrom but I cant find my stick in /dev)

I need to force 80 pin cable detect on my cdrom. According to the kernel-parameters.txt file you can do this by using libata.force=(port).(device) 80c Here is the actual explanation from the kernel file: libata.force=[LIBATA] Force configurations. The format is comma separated list of "[ID:]VAL" where ID is PORT[.DEVICE]. PORT and DEVICE are decimal numbers matching port, link or device. Basically, it matches the ATA ID string printed on console by libata. If the whole ID part is omitted, the last PORT and DEVICE values are used. If ID hasn't been specified yet, the configuration applies to all ports, links and devices.
My question is where do you find the proper port.device numbers? I'm guessing it's lspci but I'd rather be sure before I do something silly.. An actual working line for a cdrw as master on the first ide channel would be excellent. BTW my cdrw is detected as sr0 so the normal "ide" boot params won't work....

I've taken the plunge and embarked on my very first install/congifuration of Ubuntu. I've successfully installed 10.04 from the LiveCD onto a brand-new 500 GB hard drive. It boots fine. At least, it did until I reconnected another hard drive that contains a Gentoo system. (I had unplugged the Gentoo drive during the installation so as not risk mucking it up).In the presence of the Gentoo drive, the Ubuntu system starts to boot, but then fails with an a error that it's unable to mount /var.Investigation (df -k) indicates that it's mounted one of the parititions on the Gentoo drive. If I unplug the Gentoo hard drive, the Ubuntu system agains boots properly.
I have no idea why the 10.04 system even sees the other drive, much less mounts one of its partitions.My intent, once migrating to Ubuntu, was to copy needed user files and data from the old Gentoo system, then repartition the drive and use it for additional Ubuntu storage. Seems I can't get there from here.Is there some feature in Ubuntu that causes it to go looking for any other drives accessible on a system and then go about mounting random partitions?

I really want Python 2.6, which is not part of the standard Hardy packages. I just tried installing the Python 2.6 Linux distro direct from python.org. While I didn't see any error messages during the installation, I'm still defaulting to Python 2.5, and 2.6 installed to a different folder than 2.5.
A secondary wish: I would also like GROMACS 4.0 instead of 3.3. Again, Karmic has it as standard, Hardy doesn't.
I'm running dual hard drives in a software RAID1 configuration. My system is Linux only, so I have no Windoze compatibility issues to worry about.
Still, I've gathered that upgrading in the presence of RAID is different, and more problematic, than a standard upgrade.

I would like to install wxpython2.8 for python2.5, which I installed as an alternative version in the presence of the standard python2.6 using xubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx (see the end of this thread for how I did it).how would I do this without the installation going for the standard 2.6 version? I go the following error:
"E: Package autoconf has no installation candidate"

I'm attempting to install Lucid on a new Acer Timeline X 5820T and having a tons of problems.
First of, I've got no internet connection either wired or wirelessly.
I've found several posts claiming that the ethernet card just needs a driver installed to work correctly.
However, to make the driver I need build essential installed, but no problem, I've got my CD, I'll just install them from the CD.
However, when I attempt to install them through synanptic it tells me that it:

File not found why it can't fetch the cdrom? Ubuntu recognizes it and I can browse it just fine.

I managed to boot from hard disk, everything works ok. But Gparted has a bug, it works in Live Hard Disk, but not when I click the install icon because it can't umount /cdrom. But I solved that by formatting ext4 and swap area from gnome-panel Live Hard Disk and only put mount point / after click on install.But problem stroked back: install is not possible because it wants to umount itself before installing, wich cannot be possible. I'm installing it in a new place /dev/sda5. Live Hard Disk is booting from /dev/sda3.

I'm trying to install Lucid on a computer with windows already present. When I ran trough the install procedure no drives show up at the partitioning stage. So I check some things out and it turns out that /dev/sda1 is mounted to /cdrom and I can't umount it because it says the disk is in use. I'm booting with the live-cd downloaded from ubuntu. Why is this happening? Previously with older live-cd's I always have to mount the HD manually if I wanted to access it for any reason?

I downloaded the Ubuntu Server 10.04 64bit ISO and the universal USB installer, created a USB install disk and booted from it. I started the installation and right after keyboard setup I got an error saying Unable to read from CD-ROM, retry/abort. Looking at the alt-f4 log it was unable to find a file, fs-secondary.udeb I hit alt-f2 and cd'd to /cdrom/pool/main/l/linux (I think, this is all from memory) and found that file, almost. The file there was fs-secondaryblahblahblah.ude, no b on the end. I tried renaming it but the filesystem was mounted read-only.
So, cd back to /
Type mount and hit enter.
Take note of the cdrom entry, at the beginning of that line it will say /dev/? Mine was like /dev/svd0 or something like that. Remember whatever that is.
Then type umount /cdrom
Then type mount -t vfat /dev/????? (whatever your device was from earlier) /cdrom
That will mount the cdrom rw so you can rename the file to .udeb
Then press alt-F1 and press enter to retry and the installation will continue like normal.

I accidentally deleted my mahjongg game from ubuntu 10.04.Now when iam trying to install it from software center or synaptic, half way through it's asking for ubuntu cd.Eventhough i insert the original ubuntu 10.04 cd,it's not taking it.it keeps asking for the cd.It is same whenever i try to install any more game from synaptic or software center.

So, I have an old laptop that used to have windows/ubuntu until the drive got fubarred (no physical damage). I shoved the laptop as side as I didn't use it much anymore (it's an old, loud 2.4GHz desktop p4 in a dell--mostly toshiba--laptop. pcmcia atheros based wifi card and an ATI m6 graphics card. Laptop was new back in 2002-03 maybe).The Cdrom drive had died a while back, and it's not worth buying a replacement. The bios doesn't support boot to USB. What are my options for getting Ubuntu on there (9.10 preferably)? The drive has been formatted already, so there is nothing to boot into right now.
I can pull the drive and hook it up to my desktop (windows 7 machine only right now) via USB, and partition it from there, but I'm not sure how to get the installer on there. The MBR of the laptop drive will also have to be rewritten. Is there a way I can create a dos partition, load it with files, and start a linux install that way (maybe with grub4dos or something)?Or can I somehow boot into an ISO image on a partition?The only other thought I have is creating a floppy disk that will allow a network boot, but I haven't looked into that. I basically just want something to bring with on vacation that I can get online with. Browsing from the phone leaves a little bit to be desired.

I'm having headaches about not being able to install build-essential on my 9.10. I don't have an internet connection and no CDrom. [URL]. So that solves it if you have a CD drive... What to do if a poor fella (like me) was to have a system with no CD drive? I installed from USB PENDRIVE and I suppose there have to be some command corresponding to apt-cdrom but for the USB drive but I can't find one.

When I start my system on the Ubuntu 10.10 CDROM I get a tiny icon at the bottom, then the screen shuts off due to no signal. So I cannot run the Live CDROM. Relevant here is that Debian CDROM runs just fine. (Lenny installs and runs good, but squeeze does not) Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) gets me a pretty graphical welcome screen, then the monitor shuts off just like Ubuntu and Kubuntu.WinXP installed and runs without a hitch.
My system: Gigabyte GA-P43-ES3G with 4Gb ram, 750 Gb SATA HDD, Nvidia Quadro video card.I have gone through the BIOS settings looking for clues:SATA AHCI mode is set to IDE (versus AHCI)SATA port 0-3 native mode set to enabled (versus disabled which would be legacy IDE mode)Azalia codec set to auto (verus disabled)

Win-7 Ubuntu Dual Boot, Drive Presence Issue I recently built up a new computer and set it up for dual-boot with Win7 and Ubuntu. Initially I had some issues with the boot management but I discovered that GRUB works well and Paragon's Partition Manager does not. I reloaded Ubuntu using GRUB and got the system working exactly as I would like it to. Several weeks later I volunteered to assist my brother-in-law's family with getting their Unbutu system working properly with a new Brother MFC295CN printer. I brought the printer home so that I could work with it on my system.
I did get the printer to work correctly but in the process I had to reload Ubuntu because I made a few mistakes on my way to success. When I reloaded Ubuntu, I accidentally loaded it onto my system's second drive, drive F. Before, I had Ubuntu in a partition on drive C. Ubuntu works from the F drive and GRUB allows me to boot either Win 7 or Ubuntu, as desired. I will note that the earlier version of Ubuntu on drive C has been removed although the partition is still there. GRUB shows entries for this second copy of Ubuntu along with Win 7 and the entry for the functioning Ubuntu OS.
Here's where I am getting into trouble. Initially, everything looked fine. Win 7 worked, Ubuntu worked. Then, after a reboot to Win7, I noticed that my F drive was missing. I searched all around the system controls, tried loading new hardware, etc, etc, but the drive did not show up anywhere. Rebooting into Ubuntu showed that the drive was in fact still there and all the date in the large data partition was still there. Using Ubuntu's partition manager I discovered that the data partition was not enabled. I enabled the partition and rebooted back into Win7. No go.
The F drive was not present. My next step was to try Paragon's Partition Manager software, which I have a paid-for copy of. It would not see the F drive either. Using the Paragon recovery disk I had made earlier with the Paragon software, I restarted the system. The recovery software saw both drives correctly and the partitions were set up correctly. I ran the boot corrector software but I did not mess around too much as earlier experience had indicated that some of the Paragon features do not work well with Ubuntu. I shut down and rebooted into Win7. Success! The F drive was there.
But later, when I restarted the system the F drive was gone again. I tried a few things then rebooted using the recovery disk again. As before, on the next restart the F drive was present. I didn't take the time to reboot the system twenty times, but it seems apparent that something in the boot records is preventing Win7 from seeing the F drive correctly unless I boot from the Paragon recovery disk and then boot Win7.
No knowing a lot about what goes into a boot record and how either GRUB or boot.ini manage things, I am at a loss as to why I'm seeing this inconsistency with the F drive. A probable solution would be to remove both the second (old Ubuntu) partition on the C drive and the Ubuntu partion on the F drive and reload Unbutu all over. This would put me back to where I was in the beginning. However, this seems a bit inelegant as all the other attributes of the system are working well, is there a better way to address the problem?

I'm trying to create a new VM with Debian 7.6. I downloaded the 3 install iso discs and tried to install. When I begin the installation it seems to take control of the CDROM and I am no longer able to eject it by either pressing the eject button or trying to eject through Windows. The installation goes fine until it asks if I have any other discs to install (which I do ... I have 2 more). At this point I say "Yes" but I cannot get the CDROM to open up at all since it doesn't automatically eject for another disc and as I mentioned before ... I can't do it manually or in Windows.
- I cannot do an installation over the internet because this is a government computer which is requires to be hooked to a government network. There are certain certificates required to access the network which are not available to my newly made (or in the process of making) Linux system but rather only to my host Windows system.
- I cannot use a newer version of VirtualBox because that opens up a whole new set of issues dealing with WinVerifyTrust getting CERT_E_REVOCATION_FAILURE most likely due to our symantec security software.
So my Storage Settings in VirtualBox are as follows for my CDROM drive:
- Controller: IDE Controller
- Type: PIIX4
- "Use Host I/O Cache" is checked
- Host Drive D:
- CD/DVD Drive: IDE Secondary Master
- "Passthrough" is checked
I cannot install the Debian 7.6 OS because I cannot eject each disc and put in the next disc. The only way I can eject the disc is if I reboot my entire system (host windows system) which obviously leaves me at an unfinished point in my install and therefore I have to restart the install and end up right where I was 30 minutes earlier.

When installing FC 11 after a few questions about language I got:
"The Fedora disc was not found in any of your CDROM drives ...."
I read a couple of the threads on the problem and it seemed people were shooting in the dark for answers. Two issues mentioned were SCSI and DMA problems. If I go into the bios and disable the DMA or SCSI driver, and then I re-enable them after installing Fedora, will Fedora see the DMA or SCSI? Or will the fact that they were disables during installation keep Fedora from recognizing them later?

I downloaded and burned the Fedora-13-x86_64-dvd iso to install on my shiny new box (MSI NF980-G65 MB, AMD Phenom II x4 945 CPU, 8GB Corsair DDR3 memory, generic ATAPI DVD drive, 2 500GB SATA drives, 2 1.5TB SATA drives). I boot from the DVD and and take the default install/upgrade option on the menu. I've tried with the default boot options and with about a dozen different options, all give the the same thing.
Looking console 3, shows the following:
ERROR loader: removing ddmode.conf failed
ERROR loader: got to setupCdrom without a CD device
It can't find the CD/DVD drive that it booted from. The install on console 1 is prompting for a driver to load. Do I need to download a driver for a generic ATAPI/IDE CD/DVD drive?

We had a problem with the NIC 10Gig Qlogic NICs and had to swap them with Emulex 10Gig NIC cards. The swap has been done. There are several severs (about 100)for which we need to check if the hands-on still left the q logic card in them. So, I wrote a script using dmesg and grepped for "qlogic" or " NC522SFp" and my script checked for all the servers and returned no presence of "qlogic". But few of them have q logic still in them. So, is there any other way through which we can exactly tell whether q logic card is still present or not? I used:
dmesg | grep -i "qlogic" or
dmesg | grep -i " NC522SFp"
and found nothing in the o/p. But when I checked using ifconfig -a, then I see the q logic mac ids for eth4 & eth5, which means the Q logic is still present.But not sure whether ifconfig is the real way to find out the presence of these cards.

Sed seems to react to the presence of "" in its input if the immediately following character makes the pair a recognizable code. In the code following see that the "a" and "" are missing in the output, and that the "c" caused sed to terminate at that point. Is there any way to prevent it reacting like this?

I am new to this and just got a SUN Netra 440MHz T1 105 with 512MB RAM, 2 19G SCSI drives and a IDE CDROM.I am having trouble loading Ubuntu 9.05 server iso via the CDROM. The CDROM driver does not get found and the installation aborts. The CDROM is a 24x toshiba XM-7002B.I can load the old Ubuntu server 7.10 but cannot update it. (would need some help to do that, too).

I have had a dual boot on my system since first trying Ubuntu a few months ago.I had a few problems when i upgraded to 11.04 (mainly due to the new desktop Unity), but after some great help here, we had the old desktop running again.I have Windows running on my spare Computer in case i should need it for any reason, though can not think of one lol Now i am used to Ubuntu (from the using side, get lost in terminal etc so here i come if i need help) i decided i would totally commit my main computer to Ubuntu.I downloaded the latest iso from the Ubuntu site, and burnt it to CD, inserted in my main computer & rebooted. It goes past the first purple ubuntu page (hit a key to choose language & also get a selection Menu) then goes to black screen and i get:

Increasingly over time, i.e., days I experience that the keyboard (and mouse) is not recognized when booting.Now it's every time I boot. However, there is a fix. If I plug out, and immedeatly plug in again the keyboard connector everything is fine, except that keyboard short cuts not always work depending on application. In the mouse case the right mouse button doesn't respond either. Besides these effects the system, openSuSE 11.3, boots fine. It's a hazzle everytime to plug in and out again. I'm opting for another fix. Nothing suspicious in /var/log/messages. I've tried to see if there is a particular led light sequence on "num lock", "Caps lock", "Scroll lock" that I can get som info from, but I haven't been successful.Anyone got a suggestion to what might be the cause of this behavior?
