so far I have copied all of my info off of windows 7 and wanted to change to Ubuntu.I downloaded the latest netbook edition and followed the help about the pendrive installer.it booted successfully but got to writing about your name and computer name and said at the bottom 'ready when you are' i couldn't press forward so now I am running my OS through a USB.
View 1 RepliesI'm trying to install Ubuntu Netbook remix on an Acer Aspire One previously running Linpus. I've created a bootable USB which works ok and the initial Ubuntu screen comes up, I can connect to my network.
But when I select Install, a screen comes up with three ticks - drive space, power source and internet. When I then press forward, all that happens is the cursor changes to a spinning disc. Nothing else happens. I can still click Quit so it's not frozen, it just won't do anything.
I'm randomly getting 'Continue to wait; or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery...' or something like that at boot ((it flashes very quickly)- If I don't press anything, I'm prompted for my password (I configured it to login with password) and the desktop loads...
I'm using Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 -> Ultimate Edition Home
I was using my 1TB hdd to dual-boot linux, windows, and for storage...Yesterday, I imaged the linux partition, and restored it to an approximately 66GB partition I created on a 150GB hdd...Besides the 66GB partition, the rest of the 150GB hdd is 'unallocated space'... View 5 Replies View RelatedI am an absolutely beginner with Linux (ubuntu). I got fed up with widows and decided it was time to go. I installed (clean install from a cd) ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop. It is an hp compaq d220 MT.It looks good and feels good, well at least for a while since it keeps crashing. The screen starts to flicker, goes black, and the only way to get it up and running again is to press the on/off button until the system powers off and restart.

I gave up on XP - not the place for long sob stories - and decided to try Ubuntu. I know nothing, so I chose the 10.04.1 because it said stable... made a CD, took it to the problem computer, tried several times to load, then noticed that "Wubi" loaded from windows. I hunted down a 10.04.1 Wubi, and it seemed to read rather well. No error messages, told me to remove the disc. I did, told me to reboot. I chose ubuntu and it froze with the words :

I installed 10.04, and now i cant get back to windows. I have Ubuntu on one hard drive and windows on the other one. When i try to boot up, unless i go to the boot menu and select the hard drive with Ubuntu on it i get the message boot-mgr is missing, press Ctr - Alt - Del to restart.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to do partitioning with "cfdisk" in a virtual machine name is VMware that has Ubuntu, is for a project of LFS so when I try to call the "cfdisk" and an error flag:
"FATAL ERROR: Cannot open disk drive Press any key to exit cfdisk"
"Press any key to exit cfdisk"
Then try "fdisk" and I get nothing of what I need. Then with "sudo cfdisk" and I went another different error:
"FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 1: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder"
"Press any key to exit cfdisk"
I get black screen when i press ctrl-alt-f1 or when i try to stop gdm, pressing alt-f7 nothing happens.

Installation runs smoothly up until 100% and then i am prompted to reboot.
When i click reboot, i get info on some daemons(?) shutting down(i think) and then the cd is automatically ejected and i am prompted to press enter.
So far, so good. After i hit enter though, i get a large amount of various read errors and finally a segmentation fault. The system just hangs there :/.
I forcibly reboot the PS3, and then i am greeted with the pack of errors that are shown in the screenshot.
I bought a t770.uk HP desktop PC, which came without a Hard drive as the pervious owner had removed it for security reasons. A week later I got a hold of a brand new - out of an anti-static sealed bag - compatible Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB SATA150 7200 HDD, and installed it as directed by my t770.uk manual. Up until now, things looked to be on a roll. As I don't have any windows OS, I figured Ubunutu would be the way to go (and it certainly is from what I've heard and read about it. I can't wait!).
So I sent off for a CD and it popped through my mail a few weeks back. The problem that I am having is after booting past a very brief view of the HP POST screen, the screen goes black with the error "Disc boot failure-insert system disk and press enter". I've tried placing the Ubuntu disc in (assuming it is asking for that? An OS disc) and restarting, and changing the boot order around, but no matter what I do the error persists and I can't install Ubuntu. I really want to get this PC running with Ubuntu.
For some reason in the 10.10 installer (I'm on a liveusb right now) I can't move forward. I'm in the Who are You? section. It just says "ready when you are" at the bottom though I can't move forward. I've typed in all the fields, what's wrong?I tried going back a few times and going forward but that doesn't help.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI set up debtorrent on all my machines on my LAN, which is a varied mix of machines, including one Karmic, one Lucid, and a Debian Squeeze. These are behind a NAT-based firewall. I'm not sure if I'm getting any benefits from the bittorrent peer-to-peer features because I am not forwarding any ports.
Does anyone have a similar configuration? How does one deal with debtorrent on multiple machines? Does it really help if ports are forwarded? If forwarding helps, does one need to segment the forwarded ports for each different machine?
I am trying to install on Ubuntu Netbook on my MSI Wind U123. I downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu Netbook and followed the proper directions to create an installation USB. During installation, I got up to the step where it tells me to have: atleast 2.5GB available, make sure power cord is plugged in, and that I am connected to the internet. When I click on, "Forward" to continue the installation, it just hang/freezes.
I have similar problem when trying to install JoliCloud. When installing JoliCloud, I get up to step 3, where it asks about the keyboard. When I click "Forward", it doesn't do anything, it just hangs. I tired using multiple different USB drive, and also downloaded ISO file again to ensure the file wasn't corrupted.*
On this step(Picture down) Im unable to click "Forward" button, and finish the installation.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've one lenovo 3000 g430 4152 laptop on which i have windows but previously installed debian 5.03 and for enabling the wireless i've to download broadcom b43legacy and install it by compiling because the backports kernel doesn't work with lenovo and after installing debian accidently switched of the wireless by the slide button on laptop
but on next boot i was not able to enable the wireless either by the slide button or fn+f5 which is the key for enabling it the wireless then on some forum i got advise that i can only re-enable by installing windows because lenovo drivers are available for only windows for this model... my question is that is there any solution for it in debian and also there is one more problem that i've to press fn+f8 twice on each boot for enabling the touchpad...
getting stick to Fedora so much but unfortunately i have only 20GB of LVM partition which i want to resize or expand. But if i am not wrong, there is no way i can do with any partition manager and more over i am planning to reinstall Fedora from scratch having a good size.

Ubuntu on USB stick seems very slow to load. When resuming seemed to throw up errors. Resuming from Windows takes 3 seconds. I am reluctant to dual boot my netbook with Ubuntu after my experiences with my spare laptop. Is there a safe way to install Ubuntu on a netbook to dual boot with Windows Starter? how I get Ubuntu to work with a 'Three' Mobile dongle?

But when I reboot to finish the post installation information I can't click the forward button to continue because the screen resolution is to low on my LCD. I can't see the forward button to click in the lower right hand corner. I found out if I just hit the enter button I got through the "Welcome" and "License Information" part but when I get to the "Create User" part after I Confirm my password the pressing the enter button doesn't work. And of course I can't see the "Forward" button to click. Is there some way to go in text mode?

My server service provider use Linux environment and sometime it would be much easier for me to have a local server to test my websites. So I have install a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.04 to one of my computer. Half way installation, the system tell me something like couldn't configure the DHCP, I have checked that my router has enabled DHCP servers (D-Link 615). After installation and logon, I use sudo pppoeconf command and try to set the network.
But it said something like no PPPoE access. I know I am very dull, and maybe get ban from this forum because I have not read the instruction, it will be great if you can point me to the right page. All I want to do is have something like a web space + MySQL and support PHP to work with.
Ok, so the computer I want to try this out on is not connected to the Internet at this time (and I even think the Ethernet is broken because when I tried to hook it up where the on-line computer is I couldn't seem to get my computer to connect).
So I wonder if I really need to be on-line to do the install.
I couldn't install Ubuntu 11.4 on my laptop because its just comes up with a black screen.

I have a 4 disk Raid 10 with Windows 7 installed & working. (Win 7 sees this as 1 disk.)
I installed 9.10 onto a 5th disk, but I think that ubuntu saw the Raid 10 as 4 separate disks and wrote the boot loader to hd0- I had to rebuild my array & I couldn't load 9.10
For the second attempt, I disconnected my Raid 10 and 9.10 is now alive & well on the 5th disk, (presumably with the boot loader on the same disk). Both Win 7 & Ubuntu 9.10 now work but I have to steer to the required disk via the bios for loading.
I'm reluctant to play with the boot loader (GRUB?) from 9.10, because it doesn't seem to like my Windows disk array. Would something like EasyBCD (used from Win 7) be an option?
Linux noob, and I'm trying to install a little program on my rootserver, but it requires libboost and libboost-dev. Unfortunately ubuntu can't seem to find the packages and google does not help either. The only info I found was telling me to install "gnuradio" or something, which takes up 138 mb. So, how can I install these packages now?also: I cancelled the installation of gnuradio via "CTRL+C", will this cause any problems? Are there some trash files left on the system now?
