I'm running the installer, and "Guided Partitioning" selected partition sizes I'm not completely happy with. I selected separate partitions for /home, /var, /usr, /tmp etc, and by default it gave me only 5GB for the /usr partition. I'd like to take some space away from /home and give it to the /usr partition, but I can't figure out how to do that using the menu options available.
View 7 RepliesI plan on installing Ubuntu 10.04 and it will be my first Ubuntu install. I plan on dual booting with windows 7 and I would like advice on partition sizes. I have a 250 GiB drive and my planned partitions are as follows.
Sda1 (PQSERVICE) 12GiB This was pre-installed should I delete it
Sda 2 (System Reserved) 100MiB This was also pre-installed should I delete it
I know one of the above is the windows recovery partition but I don't know which one
Sda 3 (Gateway) 25 GiB This will contain windows will 25 GiB be enough
Extended partition
Logical 1 10 GiB / the main Ubuntu partition 10 GiB should be enough
Logical 2 1 GiB /home this will just hold settings so 1 GiB will be enough right?
Both above partitions are ext3
Logical 3 3 GiB swap partition I have 1 gig ram upgradeable to two
Logical 4 180 Gib shared NTFS partition
I am new to Ubuntu and would like to know if you think this is proper. I have already defragmented the hard drive and will make the partitions in Gparted on Ubuntu live test from usb drive.
I installed sqeeze on a netbook. Having no optical drive, I created a usb install disk with unetbootin on a laptop running Squeeze stable and the "Debian 6.0.1a DVD 1" iso. Much to my suprise it installed KDE. I expected, and wanted, Gnome. At the tasksel section I checked off "Graphical Desktop Env", "Laptop", and "Standard Sysytem Utilities". I found a similar post regarding this: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=60040 But in this case the OP installed with a netinstall iso and concluded a faulty mirror was the cause. This doesn't make sense in my case as I was using a DVD image which contains, afaik, Gnome, XFCE, and KDE
There surely must be a way to explicitly choose which desktop env. one wants installed. I realize this can be done by doing a base install and using apt-get; but I'm thinking there must be a simpler way using the installer. I tried the "Expert" install and only saw the generic "Graphical Desktop" option again. I figure I must be missing something somewhere. Also, can I get apt-get to recognize my unetbootin stick as a source to fetch from? I tried apt-cdrom and different entries in sources.list but I can't figure it out. It seems wasteful to me to download hundreds of MBs of packages from a mirror when I have them locally.
I just finished reinstalling Squeeze on my little netbook using the debian-6.0.0-i386-netinst.iso and accepting just about all defaults, including that for the Desktop environment in tasksel. It appeared upon rebooting that, much to my surprise, KDE had been installed -- not the usual Gnome. Of course, there's nothing inherently wrong with KDE, but changing the familiar behaviour of the Debian Installer (i.e. to install Gnome) without warning seems a bit much to this long-time Debian user...

Does anyone have any recommendations for partition sizes?From what I can tell that appears to be the default values if you do a 'wife install' (yes, yes, yes, yes, yes) on RHEL.
View 7 Replies View RelatedUsually I prefer to keep my operating system on a small partition (50 gigs or so), with the rest of my system on another partition. Normally, with windows (don't flame me for saying the W word!) a small OS partition makes sense.... this way i can scan for viruses, or defrag quickly-- two non issues with linux openSUSE. (with windows, i never install programs on my C: either; this keeps the OS partition small)One advantage at least on windows, with having a small operating system partition is that it's really easy to backup & restore. If my system gets wiped out, I only lose the OS and if i have to re-install, all my personal files are still there.
Is This Done for Me Already With the Default openSUSE Partition Set-up?I just got a new 1TB Seagate HD, which I'm going to use for development purposes in the openSUSE environment.I'm wondering if I can somehow apply my methodology explained above to openSUSE (or if it even makes sense). Are the default LVM partitions ideal for a clonezilla back-up? (can I just backup my primary partition, on the second partition somewhere in case I really mess up my machine). I've been using openSUSE for just a month now, and I'm really liking it (its my favorite linux OS now).

When I installed Ubuntu, I was presented with a GUI which allowed me to easily reassign storage space from the latter two to create the former. Is there any way to get to something similar, from which I can adjust the proportions of the partition sizes, without affecting their content?

In 10.04LTS, when selecting print to file, the default settings are .ps, and home directory. Can those defaults be changed? I've looked around in CUPS, ubuntu-tweak, and searched on here, to no avail.
View 5 Replies View RelatedStill ironing out the kinks in a new install of Fedora 12.For some reason I am not able to change the icons, colours or font size used in the Nautilus file browser. While I am able to change these settings in System>Preferences>Appearance, changes just don't affect the Nautilus file browser, which continues to use the default Fedora icons in blue and 9 pt. Sans as its font no matter what I do. On the GNOME desktop I am able to adjust fonts and sizes, but when I change the icons, settings do not stick after a reboot.
I have tried deleting the ~/.gconf/apps/nautilus directory, downgrading nautilus, even removing and reinstalling it entirely, but to no avail. Tools like gnome-color-chooser affect the panel and desktop, but just don't have any effect on the Nautilus file browser. Why?This looks to me like a permissions issue possibly? The situation could be affected by the fact that the settings in /home were inherited from a previous installation of another linux distro.
Anyone know how to change the icon sizes in Gnome's Application Browser or Control Center?
It seems mine used to be larger but now they are quite small. I looked in gconf editor but I didn't find anyhing.
I have set up an HP 5M networked printer. The test page works fine, and the defaults are all set correctly. But when I try to print from my own java programs, the paper size is set to letter, and the margins are all set to 2.54 mm. I can change the paper size to A4 (but I have to do it EVERY time). And the margins won't even let me change them. I type in 0, click in the next field, and the value changes straight back to 2.54. It has been this way for at least the last two releases of Ubuntu.

Even after reverting back to the ambiance theme, or other themes, I've noticed that some elements of the Elegant Gnome theme have remained (e.g. the panel color and icons in Chrome or after right clicking and the system font).Is there a way to restore the Gnome defaults or Ubuntu system defaults so that everything is as it should be?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a rack of four 1TB drives all partitioned identically with three primary partitions. On each drive
- the first partition is only 64MB;
- the second is a large 900GB partition and
- the last holds all the remaining space
mdadm has been used to set up
/dev/md0 - RAID1, comprised of /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1
/dev/md1 - RAID5, comprised of /dev/sda2, /dev/sdb2, /dev/sdc2, /dev/sdd2
/dev/md2 - RAID5, comprised of /dev/sda3, /dev/sdb3, /dev/sdc3, /dev/sdd3
OK, so it was a silly mistake to make - but I am now need to increase the size of /dev/md0. My thinking is to reduce the size of md1 so that I can grow md0.
On md1 I have two logical volumes. I've successfully reduced the size of the volume so that I can reduce the size of md1. Now I'm at the nervous stage; I can find little written on the topic of shrinking RAID5 arrays - and even if I do this I'm unsure if I can move partitions around to regain the space I so desire.
I want to make a new partion,my home is /dev/hda9,so I use the Partion Editor(Gparted) ,frist umount the device(umount -l /dev/hda9),then change the size,everyone thing works well until I clicked the Apply,the error occurred:
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have, as I have in the past, copy/pasted a partition using gparted to get a working OS to another place.
I have always done this in the past to a different drive. Never paid much attention to the UUID.
This time I did it on the same drive. The partitions have the same UUID. This is not a good thing.
The copied OS boots and mounts fine as I edited the fstab to go by /dev/sdxy (where x is the drive and y the partition). My grub uses a custom menu using symbolic menu entries so it goes by the partition definition instead of UUID too.
I would really like to change the UUID on that partition.
I'm running a dual boot system with winXP and Debian Lenny. Here's my hard drive set up
hda1 - windows ntfs (just for use with windows)
hda2 - / ext3
hda3 - swap
hda4 - /home ext3
hda5 - /windows fat32 (shared partition between linux and windows)
Now, I have access to /windows but it's owned by root so I can't create/modify anything and I can't unmount it to use chown.
I recently installed Wheezy from a DVD (that was written almost a year and half ago) to my desktop. The DVD install was a minimal one, so after installation I updated the system and installed gnome. But after reboot, my gnome always falls back to gnome-classic.

May be some firmware is missing, so I installed firmware-linux, firmware-linux-free, firmware-linux-nonfree, firmware-realtek, firmware-atheros (last two following a boot time warning). That did not solve the problem, so I just did Code: Select all$ sudo apt-get install firmware-* That also did not solve the problem.
Then I looked into my .xsession-errors file:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having issues with Grub 2 after installing Debian 7.8.0.The computer is a HP Pavilion 500-307nb. I made the original harddrive /dev/sdb and inserted a Samsung Evo 840 as /dev/sda. From the original hard drive (/dev/sdb), I wiped the windows partition, but left all other partitions unchanged (in case I would ever want to recover the desktop to its original state). I replaced the wiped windows partition with a swap partition and an LVM partition.These are my hard drive partitions:

The partition /dev/sda3 has 2 logical volumes with filesystem ext4 that I mount to / and /home.The partition /dev/sda2 is mounted to /boot..When I install like this, Debian installs fine, however Grub2 is not installed correctly.Debian installs grub-pc which seems not able to boot the gpt partition. So I boot the Debian CD in rescue mode and execute:
mount /dev/sda2 /boot
aptitude purge grub-pc
aptitude -y install grub-efi
After rebooting, I come in the grub rescue shell, which says: error: no such device: 986f2176--4a4b-4222-83b9-8636a034b3c7.
When I then enter in the grub rescue shell:
set boot=(hd0,gpt2)
set prefix=(hd0,gpt2)/grub
insmod normal
normal
Grub and Debian start up correctly.why can Grub not start up automatically correctly? Where does the UUID 986f2176--4a4b-4222-83b9-8636a034b3c7 come from? I have reinstalled Grub several times, I have reinstall Debian several times, I have even wiped all partitions from /dev/sda and recreated a new gpt table with parted and manually set the partitions in parted. Still on each reinstallation, Grub fails because it cannot find exactly the same UUID. Since this UUID is always the same, it must be stored somewhere, but it cannot be the partitions, I have wiped them and the partition table several times.
I did though a firmware update of the Samsung Evo 840 before reinstallation, could this be a cause?Also the problem is not in grub.cfg. Grub starts correctly if I enter the commands above in the grub rescue screen and the UUID value does not appear there.
I had to install Ubuntu 10.10 5 times before the boot problem was fixed, but only now to find that the Nvidia GE Force 3 Ti200 video card is NOT supported by the current Nvidia drivers and the legacy Nvidia 96 video drivers has a known bug which may never get fixed.Currently I am running the 1024 x 768 screen size under Nouveau, but how can I change this to 1920x1080 ? Will creating an xorg.conf file work?I did have the GE Force 3 supporting the new 1920x1080p monitors under VGA mode and the screen looked fantastic in the past.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSome time back using this computer a SucKit rootkit was found. Having dd urandomed the drive, flattened CMOS battery, flashed BIOS, run Knoppix live CD 6.1,using no flat pack battery (laptop), and memtested the RAM, I am still having problems with what I suspect is a javascript file that tries to reload the rootkit from? firmware. I suspect the firmware as everything else should have eradicated it??
Also it or a hacker via a backdoor then corrupts the drivers so devices malfunction. Windows security programs and rootkit detectors don't seem to pick it up. Fresh install of Windows or linux after the above still show this problem, though internet not used. The person who admitted rootkitting this machine is capable of writing java programs or using javascripts to do all this.
When viewed using Ubuntu 8.4 files and dates on a Windows partition appear normal both in file manager and terminal. However booting using Knoppix CD these files are all green, and I cannot change their permissions, even as root. ie: everything is green including text files etc. If I copy them to a linux partition, I can change their permissions and make them nonexecutable and nonwritable. Also on the Windows FAT32 partition the . directory has the date 1 Jan 1970.
If I disable any green files, I can shutdown and reboot cleanly. If I don't I start having problems shutting down [/usr/sbin/init ?] And always these follow a pattern:

I downloaded the ubuntu-10.04-rc-desktop-i386.iso file and burned it to a CD - i.e. what I thought would be a standard Ubuntu Live CD experience. Imagine my surprise when:On a black screen, there was a new (small) window on the left and a (small) meaningless stick figure on the right at the bottom of the screen, and after a while I got the error window entitled:

Since when is installation (with no user interaction) a default when using a (Live)CD ISO image of any Ubuntu RC or otherwise?My only purpose was to boot up into the Live CD environment - but that was not only not presented as an option (normally there is a 30 second countdown) and the usual default is to boot up into the Live CD environment.This was not the case with the RC! Why not?
I installed the nvidia driver from the vendors homepage. But since it does not support regulation of brightness (and the display is that bright that I want to downlevel it), I wanted to go back to the default display driver which is the nouveau driver.So I uninstalled the nvidia driver and then I realized that I didn't make any backup of the xorg.conf file prior installing the nvidia driver. Shame on me, yeah.Now when the x-server started, it couldn't find the nvidia driver. Okay, fair as it was removed. Next to that my keyboard becomes unresponsive. That's really aching as I can not switch to a text-based console any longer.I'm able to boot into initmode 3 by editing the kernel parameters in the boatloader. I'm also able to edit the xorg.conf with vi in the shell then and start the xserver to test things by calling xinit.
I already tried to recover a bit from this situation by removing the references to the nvidia driver and replaced it with some information I could find on the nouveau homepage - but no luck so far, keyboard still freezes and login window does not appear. I could take a look into the xorg.0.log which warns me about the keyboard getting disabled but I do not really understand why. Next to that I find some other additional information. My computer experience is quite okay, but I'm somehow new to Fedora, I started half a year ago with Fedora 13 on my other laptop which worked like a breeze.
I wondered where I can find information about how to configure the xserver in the default configuration, if there is some reset functionality or so, that brings me back to installation defaults. Those worked ok for the nouveau driver. Unfourtionatly I was not able to gather the correct package name that would probably had helpded me by removing and installing it again.Next to fixing my setup, I had another idea as this is a quite new install to just re-run the install again on to that machine. Is this possible with keeping the files in my homedir?
on a dual boot can one change the size of each partitioned section of the boot once both sides are installed ?i have a 500GB disc and i have lucid on 307 Gb and maverick on 145GB i did this so i could test mavericknow i would like to change the split to say half and halfcan i do this?i have mountmanager installed but i am not sure how to proceed
