Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Install 10.10 On Asus Laptop F50Sv

Oct 14, 2010

I used this laptop since 8.4. When first 10.10 beta arrived I decided to upgrade as usual. all seemed to go well. At reboot the computer was hanging after grub, with a blinking cursor on top left. Then was turning off and had getting into a weird hung mode. Was not possible to start it over. The only solution was unplug, take battery off and wait for a minute. Now with the official 10.10 I decided to install it over. But the live CD start right after the first screen. Again with the blinking cursor and angs the machine again. Windows works perfectly as well as all Ubuntu, including 10.4

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install On Asus EEE Netbook

Apr 21, 2011

I'm trying desperatly to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my Asus Eee netbook. I've created an USB bootable stick. It boots. I get to the screen where I can choose the language and where I have the choice between "Try" or "Install". I choose Install. After that, I get to the screen about the preparation of the installation. It says I have enough disc space, that I'm successfly connected to the power and to the Internet. I click on next and... nothing happens! It stays for ever on that screen.

Ubuntu Installation :: ASUS EeePC 901 Does Not Boot After Clean Install / What To Do?

Nov 23, 2010

I tried to run Ubuntu 10.10 - Netbook and Ubuntu 10.4 live CDs on my ASUS 901.
Both run well.

But neither reboot after clean install.
After the machines BIOS splash screen there is just a blinking cursor at the left top of the screen. No ubuntu/linux/kernel messages whatsoever.

I tried installing both versions on both SSD-s (4GB & 32GB) and ensured the BIOS was correctly set to boot from the correct one.

I searched the net quite a lot but didn't find anything that could relate to an ASUS 901

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Fails On Asus P8H67 Motherboard / Get It?

Apr 6, 2011

I just assembled a new computer with Intel Core I3 processor and Asus P8H67 motherboard and 4 MB of memory. It has a 2TB Hitachi Deskstar Hard Drive and Asus DVD. I am trying to load Ubuntu 10.10 directly (without first loading Windows) without success.

I have tried 4 separate downloads of Ubuntu - 64 bit, 32 bit with Desktop and Alternative. I have changed a variety of parameters and various tricks suggested on other threads. The Desktop (32 and 64) versions get me to Busybox shell with message (Initramfs) Unable to find a medium using live file system. The Alternative version hangs with the messages:
RAMDISK: Couldn't find valid RAM image startgin at 0;
No filesystem could mount root, tried ext3, ext2, ext4, fuseblk;
Kernal panic - not syncing VHS;
Unable to mount root fs on unkown block(1,0).

For parameters I think have tried them all (but not in all combinations). I tried exiting twice from BusyBox as suggested on forums but that just hangs the system. I also turn off the quiet and splash to try and see what is going on....but it is too complex and goes to fast for me to follow.

A final suggestion was that the P8H67 is too new for Ubuntu 10.10 and to try the new version 11 coming out...I am new to Linux and reluctant to try a Beta

Ubuntu Installation :: ASUS P5P55D-E LX Mobo Can't Install 10.04 Lucid Lynx 32-bit

Oct 20, 2010

I just purchased a new PC with the following specs:

Intel Core i5-760
ASUS P5P55D-E LX (S1156 mobo)
Sapphire HD 5750 Vapor-X 1GB Video Card
Samsung 1TB HDD
Corsair DDR3 PC1333 Gaming RAM - 2x2GB
DVD: Samsung DVD burner (internal)

I have made several trials to install Lucid Lynx but all failed:

1. Installed Windows 7 64-bit, hdd formatted as NTFS and ext3, then trying to install Lucid Lynx 32-bit : failed.

2. Installed Windows XP 32-bit, hdd formatted as FAT32, then trying to install Lucid Lynx 32-bit : failed.

3. Trying to install Lucid Lynx 32-bit with a clean hdd formatted as FAT32: failed.

In all the scenarios above, I have tried using Ubuntu installers on CD, DVD, or USB. on CD and DVD, the process always stopped after the Ubuntu logo screen, not even reached the langauage selection screen. On USB, with Legacy set to On in the BIOS, it did run and started by the option screen where we get to choose booting from the usb, or booting from hdd, or memory test, etc., but after choosing the booting from usb (and then hdd also) option, the process also stopped after the Ubuntu logo screen. I have experience dual booting Windows XP with Lucid Lynx on an older system, so I'm not completely new in this. I'd like to know what actually went wrong?

Fedora Installation :: F15 Install Fails On Asus 1101HA / What To Do?

Jun 19, 2011

I have been running Fedora 14 on my Asus 1101HA netbook for several months without real problems. This weekend I tried to install Fedora 15, but the install failed in two ways:

* The GUI login screen never appears. I'm able to log in using character mode, but that's all.

* The network hardware is not configured, even the wired connection. Hence, I'm unable to apply updates (which I hoped might fix the GUI problem). I tried manual configuration (which is hard to find instructions for these days), but it didn't work.

The output of ifconfig shows no eth0 device, but rather something called "em2":

I've attached the Xorg.0.log file and the output of dmesg and ifconfig.

Debian Installation :: Asus H97-Plus - UEFI (Secure Boot) / Black Screen Install

Aug 29, 2014

I appear to have the exact problem that is currently listed in the 7.6 errata about EFI boot and black screen while trying to install ("Potential issues with UEFI booting on amd64"). The problem is that their workaround is not an option for me. This is a new rig and the motherboard doesn't appear to have any kind of ability to disable secure boot. I also don't know if my problem is exactly what they're thinking when it comes to that entry.

I'm able to get to the Grub install screen where you have the option to install Debian but when I select an option (any option) the screen turns off, back on but is black. All activity in the system stops after a few seconds (3-5 seconds) and that's it, she's done. I've tried all the options to try and disable secure boot but the options listed below are as close as I can get (and apparently should be sufficient).

The CD ISO used was the 7.6 netinst CD. I've also tried the Jessie ISO (Testing) that was downloaded about 2 hours ago. Same results. Unlike the errata which says "intermittent booting problems", my issue is consistently reproduced with no other result no matter what I do.

The rig:
-Asus H97-Plus running revision 2202
-Intel i5-4570
-32GB DDR3-1600
-128GB SSD Drive
-No external video card - using on board only but have tried both VGA and HDMI ports with the same result.

BIOS settings (is it still called BIOS or is it UEFI now?)
-Fast Boot: Disabled
-Launch CSM: Enabled
-Boot Device Control: "Legacy OPROM Only" or "UEFI and Legacy OPROM" (tried both)
-Secure Boot State: Enabled (it's grayed out and I'm unable to change this)
-OS Type: Other OS (supposedly makes it so you can boot non-Windows OS)

The Debian page with the errata: [URL] ...

Look for "Potential issues with UEFI booting on amd64"

The obvious suggestions I've tried:
-tried USB boot & CD boot - same result
-tried altering the grub script to add the ACPI options - no effect

Ubuntu :: Asus Netbook: Which OS To Install?

Oct 29, 2010

I'm completely new to Ubuntu and Linux. Previously, my only experience is that I've successfully installed Ubuntu on a computer that I was giving away to a friend of mine. So now I've got a refurb netbook coming in the mail in a day or two. It comes with Windows 7 Starter, which I'm assuming is complete crud.*

So assuming it's a good idea to replace that with Ubuntu, my question is, which one? I see that there is now a pretty prominent download link for something called Ubuntu Netbook. But I also see that there's something called Ubuntu Moblin Remix, and I've seen people on the Web referring to just "Ubuntu Remix."

Which one do I want to install? Are there features in regular Ubuntu that I'll miss because they're not in these alternate netbook versions? Since I'm a complete noob when it comes to Linux, I will want to be learning as much as I can. Hopefully using one of these low calorie versions of Ubuntu would not hamper my learning process?

I suppose I should tell you what I'm using the computer for: What I plan to do with my netbook is mainly cruise the Web and watch videos. My desktop computer is an iMac running OS X 10.5.8 (as well as Windows 7 Ultimate on its Boot Camp partition), and I would like to be able to have the netbook and the iMac be able to network with each other so I can copy movie files onto to the netbook's hard drive as easily as possible. Is this a correct assumption? I've seen it implied that Win 7 Starter uses less system resources than the Home or Professional versions and is therefore better for netbooks. Should I maybe consider just keeping Win 7 on there? To me, the most obvious benefit of ditching Windows is that I won't need to have anti-virus software always running in the background and slowing things down.

Fedora :: Install 64-bit F13 Or F14 On An Asus P5KC?

Dec 10, 2010

Trying to install 64-bit F13 or F14 on an Asus P5KC, 2.4Ghz Q6600, 4GB OCZ RAM is proving futile.Initially Fedora 13 would boot, but after the initial yum update it picked up a delay of about a minute at the'Starting mdmonitor' stage, although it was not mdmonitor causing this, as disabling the service simply moved the delay on to the 'Starting system message bus' stage.I could and was living with this for few days, then more updates were available, so I hoped they'd fix it and applied them. Bad mistake as now Fedora 13 now gets stuck permanently at this point. Even after a fresh re-install and update.Fedora 14 does exactly the same thing, it's fine (bar some graphical glitches when booted) until I run 'yum update', then it dies in the same way.On both installations, attempting to boot the previous kernel doesn't help, so I don't think it is the kernel itself but a change that is made to the system during the update process. I know the machine's hardware is fine, before being formatted it was a file server running CentOS 5.1 with an uptime in excess of 200 days.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Get Asus Mini Plus USB Stick To Install Properly

Jan 27, 2011

I am trying to get the Asus "My Cinema-U3100 Mini plus" DVB-T USB stick to work on my lucid 32bit with 2.6.32-27 kernel - with no great success so far. And this despite searching through forums and following the instructions given on [URL].

The USBID is in fact
Code:
ID 0b05:1779 ASUSTek Computer, Inc.
Which is exactly the one shown in the list of supported devices on LinuxTV. I have implemented all modifications and corrections to the source files as outlined in the above LinuxTVWiki instructions.

I also added the boot option
Code:
usbhid.quirks=0x0b05:0x1779:0x0004
to grub2 in order to overcome the (initial) problem of the tuner being recognised as a HID device.

My dmesg output after plugging in the device now shows
Code:
Jan 27 17:44:50 jens-laptop kernel: [ 1086.358488] usb 2-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
Jan 27 17:44:50 jens-laptop kernel: [ 1086.495359] usb 2-5: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

When I try to compile the af903x driver using
Code:
sudo make

The response on the screen is
Code:
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.32-27-generic/build SUBDIRS=/home/jens/Desktop/Linux_PC_AF9035_Afatech_2008.12.17/Linux-32bit_AF9035_20081217/AF903x_SRC modules

make: *** [default] Error 2

My knowledge is limited and I have no idea why I am getting all these warnings and finally the error message. Also, is there a way to tell when (or if at all) driver support for this device will be implemented in the Linux kernel?

Ubuntu Installation :: Former - User Cannot Return On His ASUS

Jul 20, 2011

Greetings beloved Linux users. I had grown accustomed to using Ubuntu on my laptop for the longest time when a nasty virus screwed up my boot sectors on my HP Desktop. I finally bought a nicer computer with Windows 7 back in November of 2010, but I'm having difficulties trying to install Ubuntu onto it. Here are some specs:

Model: Asus CM5571 Desktop PC 64-bit
Processor: Intel Pentium E5400 / 2.7 GHz Dual-Core (yes, a Pentium)
RAM: 6 GB DDR3 SDRAM
Graphics: Intel GMA X4500 Dynamic Video Memory Technology 5.0
Sound Card: Intel HD Audio

I'll be willing to provide more if needed So, I started off trying to load the Ubuntu 10.04 CD I received from the free shipping service off of the Ubuntu website, and that would not boot. It seemed to hang after trying to scan my 500 GB external. So I unplugged that, rebooted, and it seemed to hang on my USB hub. I unplug that, rebooted, and it hangs after trying to making "calls" or something to devices. Not sure at all what is going on there.

I figured I might need a 64-bit edition so I go to the website and burn an ISO of Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. The same thing happens. I then begin experimenting with the boot options (acpi=off, etc.) and none of that seems to work either. Out of desperation, I find an old 8.04 CD and try to boot from that. It gets past the loading bar but boots into BusyBox only.

Ubuntu Installation :: Asus EEE PC Restore Causes Grub Rescue

Feb 11, 2010

I had windows XP and Ubuntu installed on my Asus 1000HE and the hard drive is failing so I need to RMA it. They told me to restore it to factory defaults which I just press F9 at boot 3 time and Ghost takes over and reformats, creates 2 partitions and installs XP on one of the and the other is for another OS or just storage if needed.

I did that now I get a grub rescue prompt when I boot my netbook. Is there a way that grub installed itself to my PE partition that's a hidden partition that came with the netbook? I've taken the drive out of the netbook and put it into my desktop and formatted both main partitions but not the restore one. Yet I still get the grub rescue prompt, how can that be?? I can't even boot from flash drive or get to bios it just goes straight to the rescue.I need to send the netbook back but can't unless its restored. Right now I'm on the 9.10 live flash drive I made on my desktop and my only hard drive attached it the netbooks.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Create New Partition In Asus 1000ha?

Sep 5, 2010

I don't speak english very well so forgive my grammar errors ! Well, my problem is: I'm installing Ubuntu 9.04 in my netbook Asus 1000Ha EeePc. I'm installing that version because I had downloaded it some time before and I didn't want to download again.

I've created a bootable USB with UnetBootin from Windows XP. Installation is perfect until I try to create a new partition. I mean, I want a dual boot with Windows and I've edited a NTFS partition to get free space (30 Gb). This free space is not formatted. When I put the cursor on the free space, "New partition" button is disabled. That means, that I can't create swap or none of the required partitions I need to install ubuntu.

There is more, I used the same version of the installer in a CD when I installed Ubuntu in my desktop computer. There were no problems and installation worked! Now, I have 30 Gb of free space that Windows can't see... and I can't edit it for Ubuntu... Does anybody know how to solve this? I really want to install ubuntu because I need it for University.
