Ubuntu Installation :: Go Back To Karmic
May 6, 2010I'm so impressed with Lucid that I'd like to revert to Karmic as soon as possible. How do I do this without losing my data?

View 6 RepliesI've updated from 9.10 to 10.04 but unfortunately the PHP provided with 10.04 is not yet supported by zend optimizer. As far as I understand I need to somehow replace the PHP 5.3 package provided under 10.04 with an older PHP 5.2 package provided under 9.10. However I am not sure whether this is the right way to downgrade PHP and if yes, I don't know how to replace the 10.04 package with 9.10 package.
View 1 Replies View RelatedDesktop running a clean install of Karmic with ext4, /home on a separate ext3 partition. If I attempt to use Nautilus to copy a file over 1GB (that seems to be the tipping point) from Desktop to another partition or an external HDD, or if I download anything at the same time as I'm copying any file, the system freezes completely (no mouse, keyboard lights flash and keypresses don't register), and the only thing I can do is hit the reset button. I don't know enough to figure out exactly what's causing it, but I think it's ext4; this very same hardware ran Jaunty with ext3 like a champ, but when I installed Karmic, I formatted that partition to ext4, and that's when the freezing started. In the event that I don't know what I'm talking about and it's actually video drivers, I am using the Nvidia driver (185) on a GeForce 6200 because I use TwinView and don't know how to do a spanned desktop without it. I had used Nvidia drivers in Intrepid and Jaunty, though, with no problems. I have no Compiz effects enabled at all.
I'm perfectly willing to go back to ext3 (I think I remember how to make the list to "auto-install" applications, and /home is separate anyway), but if it is ext4 causing the problem, I'm still likely to run into it because one of my external HDDs is formatted ext4, and I don't really have anywhere to stick nearly 1TB of photos and video to reformat it ext3. Ultimately, if that's what it takes to fix the freezing, I'll do it, but I'd rather not. I like Ubuntu...I've used it since Warty, but this is wearing me out. I will carefully follow instructions and do nearly anything; I just want the freezing to stop.
Laptop only has external display. When karmic boots 2.6.31-21 and initrd.img has finished loading, and I have taken quiet splash out of boot line, I get nothing on the external display until gnome come up. Does the kernel driver only recognise internal displays until X takes over, or is there something wrong with the karmic 855GM kernel driver?
View 1 Replies View RelatedLast Monday I upgraded the Ubuntu from Karmic Koala to Lucid Lynx in my laptop (HP Compaq volna 515), and I have no sound. Searching in linux forums for an answers, I've got that (as far as I understand) there's no unique solution for this problem.
This is my lspci code...
Also, I tried to clean up the pulse audio .. What is funny for me is that pulse audio and alsa, and the audio players seems to work normally (no error of device not found or something like that).. except that there's no sound out from the speakers.
Any suggestion to discover if the problem is drivers, kernel, packages, or hardware failure? more important, how do I get the sound back?
What's the right direction or give me step by step on how to do this?

I've upgraded the generic kernel of my Xubuntu Karmic AMD64 persistent USB installation with the ubuntustudio realtime kernel (2.6.31.9.10). The thing is that the generic kernel is still loading as default and I don't have the option on the boot menu to choose the new one. I don't know how to edit this Grub2 version (grub-pc 1.97 beta 4).I haven't found a GUI package for this either.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to figure out how to get the newest build for LyX properly (ie not from building it myself) for Karmic. I do
Code:
sudo apt-get upgrade lyx , but it doesn't pick up the 1.6.5 (although it looks like it is prepared to ship out with Lucid. Any ideas on how to get it to just work? It's these minor problems with Ubuntu being slow to upgrade to the newest builds of software (ie Firefox 3.6) that makes it a little bit frustrating. Maybe I should learn to program so I can help out more...
Last night I booted up and got the black screen, and it would not boot. Can't find your /etc/home/fstab file or something along those lines I did not write it down. I got out my thumb drive and reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10, when I got to the partition phase I did a manual install and instructed Ubuntu to load onto /dev/sda1 /. I had previously partitioned this 160Gb drive with 41 Gb for root and 113 for my /home files and left 6.2 for Swap. Now it sees my second partition as 119 /dev/sda2 extended and Unrecognized. Unfortunately all my files are on that partition and I can't figure out how to tell Ubuntu to configure that partition as my /home . I really do not want to re-install and wipe that partition. Can gparted fix this dilemma? I thought I was being so good by creating a boot partition so that I could upgrade in the future without affecting the rest of my files.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Windows 7 onto the unallocated 150GB space on my 250 GB hard drive with no trouble. But, when I restart my computer it goes directly to Windows and pretends that I have no Ubuntu partition at all. I realize that this is because Windows doesn't like GRUB and really hates GRUB2, but I can't seem to fix this. I downloaded the latest release of Easy BCD which gave me a promising screen upon start up where it allows me to select "Ubuntu" instead of "Windows 7" but then it goes to a GRUB command screen. What do I do here?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to install karmic from a usb key onto a new zotac ion 300 itx-A board and can't get into the liveCD to test things out. The system boots to the install menu and when I select "Try Ubuntu..." the system hangs on a blinking cursor. This also happens if I choose the "safe graphics" mode.
Selecting "Install Ubuntu" has the same result. I recently used the same usb key to install karmic onto my laptop so I know it works. Searching for "karmic zotac ion" has led me to some posts about xorg not loading but that's after the initial install process and also on an alpha version of Karmic (I'll burn that bridge when i get to it). Others seem to have had no problem getting karmic installed.
I've also tried mythbuntu and 64-bit jaunty with the same results. Is there any way I can find out what's causing this hang? I can't get into a console or anything.
I posted this about 3 weeks ago in the 'Desktop' forum and with no replies feel this may be a better area
I've got Karmic installed on my netbook which I understand uses Grub2 which is still a BETA version.
I still seem to have the original GRUB (legacy) within the file system, still have a menu.lst file but is appears to be showing the contents of grub.cfg at boot time.
What is happening at boot time, is GRUB Legacy handing over to GRUB2 at boot or is the an option for GRUB2 to hand over to Grub Legacy.
Ubuntu rocks but I am having trouble enabling PAE.
I want to do it to have my full 4Gb RAM recognized by my 32bit OS. At the moment System Monitor only recognizes 3.2Gb and the command "free -m" shows the same value.
I followed these instructions but they don't seem to work: [URL]
PS: The point is to really understand how to achieve this and not to start a debate "32bit vs 64bit OS choice"
I have been trying 10.04 Lucid for the past two weeks. Personally I think it has too many gadgets and kinky stuff. Maybe nice to play with, maybe this era just needs that kind of thing but I prefer a reliable, sturdy machine. Look at it as if I had to choose between a Hummer and an old Willy's jeep; I would choose the latter. So this Lucid thing is not really what I need, so I would like to get back to Karmic or even maybe Jaunty. How big was my surprise when I noticed on visiting the official ubuntu download pages that all there is left to download is . . . 10.04 Lucid. Even when you follow the links to what should get you other distro's you come out at ... 10.04 Lucid!!Strange, but this gives me really a "Microsoft" feeling: you shall only use the product that WE have chosen for youFrankly, this leaves me quite disappointed, and IMHO is completely the opposite of the Ubuntu way of life.
But, who am I to complaint. Luckily I still have a perfectly good working 8.04 Hardy and even a Hardy live CD, so this gives me the opportunity to upgrade now that this still is possible. And, maybe, I didn't look in the right places. But given that I am not native English speaking (like most of the world population out there), I sometimes have a lot of trouble understanding some of the more technical data I am encountered with. Being Dutch-speaking, I even went over to the Dutch Ubuntu-site. There I followed the link for downloading Karmic and found myself at ... the official Ubuntu 10.04 download site
I recently installed Karmic Koala server edition, and then did the 'apt-get ..install' for the desktop gnome, but now I'm not sure what to do to get my gui to show. I am stuck at the termanal type command line, it's asking for a sudo comman. I know a few 'sudo' commands, but I really need the gui.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHow do I install a specific one? Or better yet, revert back to an earlier release.
I have two systems running.
2.6.31-22-generic #60-Ubuntu aphrodite release
2.6.31-22-generic #63-Ubuntu amaterasu release
I googled the #60 and #63 and it listed release names highlighted above, is this correct?
If it is, how can I install the aphrodite release?
I have one system working great (#60), while the other exhibits problems playing back 1080p video files (#63). The only HW difference that could affect the dropping frames is the 8200/8300 Nvidia chipsets (with the 8200 working perfectly) and then of course the Karmic releases. I have re-installed the system and files twice and even upgraded new releases of Nvidia drivers (195 > 256) with no success.
My next step is to try and install the same exact release of Karmic if indeed there is a difference between #60 and #63.
My next step might be to use clonezilla and clone the OS (Root) and try that. But then the chipsets for sound are different as well as the ehternet chipset. But that shouldn't impair the video.
I installed Karmic on a newly formatted hd. Xp is on another. When I boot, KK comes with no problem. But, I get and error 13 when I try to access xp. Here is the result of the boot info script.
[Code]....
The sound is an onboard Realtek AC97 chip on my motherboard. It worked absolutely fine on my 9.04 Jaunty setup. My machine is dual boot with Windows XP and the sound is fine on XP, so it's not a hardware issue. Karmic seems to think there is no audio device present at all, which is obviously not the case. This is an AMD 64-bit machine running the x64 edition, although I doubt that has anything to with the problem. Everthing else in the installation went perfectly and the GNOME desktop seems significantly quicker too.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been getting squashfs errors in the live usb created by various means(unetbootin, usbcreater, pendrive linux software).
There seems to be no error in my media or my hw. I have tried both 32 and 64 bit versions and the md5 sums of both match with the hashes given online. I havent yet tested with a compact disk, but i am sure the hw is working fine (it just booted 9.04 from usb..)
I have tried a few boot options [URL] to no avail. Also by turning off the quiet mode during boot, I see that the a few errors are "Unable to read from /dev/sdb" which should be the usb drive itself.
I will try a CD now, but my cd drive is not working. I hope to get a usb drive and boot from it.
I like ubuntu and want to start using it more, but because of a work website that I need to access (developed for IE and only IE or Firefox running IETAB has full functionality) , I still need to use XP. Is it better to install Ubuntu on a partition or install within Windows and use Windows loader?? I see the two choices when using the Ubuntu CD I made. I already have XP Pro SP3 installed on my thinkpad T60 with dual core CPU and 3G RAM What are the advantages or disadvantages?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen Karmic came out I made the decision to leave OSX and become fulltime linux. The one thing I took for granted is OSX's ability to resize a partition to create space for another partition. I am wondering if this is possible? The reason is I want to put all my storage data (i.e. papers, pictures, music, etc) into a partition separate from the OS. I seek to do this so that I can test out Lucid and subsequent alpha's/beta's.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi used the Update Manager to upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10.. then it said:
NO VALID MIRROR FOUND
While scanning your repository information no mirror entry for the upgrade was found. This can happen if you run a internal mirror or if the mirror information is out of date.
Do you want to rewrite your 'sources.list' file anyway? If you choose 'Yes' here it will update all 'jaunty' to 'karmic' entries. If you select 'No' the upgrade will cancel.
I choose yes, then is said that there's something wrong with the network I'm connected to..then it closes..the upgrade failed.
I'm currently upgrading my laptop, and it has completed the step "Getting new packages", and is now onto "Installing the upgrades".It says it is going to take another 2.5 hours, but I am leaving work soon and want to take the laptop with me. Is it safe to disconnect it from the internet at this point? I don't want to fudge up the install, but I don't want to have to leave my laptop at work all weekend (or have to come back and pick it up at some point).
