If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit.I installed this same file in 9.10 with no problems and I tried another MS program that I installed in 9.10 using wine no problems.

Lot of questions about WINE... When I'm done I'm going to make a HOWTO so that others can do what I did It's hard work, but I'm nearly done. The last problem I'm having is the WINE menu on GNOME won't show up after a install of WINE from a .deb package (it usually does). This was after I compiled WINE from source and removed it with "make uninstall" and "rm -rf /.wine".So now I installed the WINE from a deb package and the Wine menu entry is not showing up.I've tried re-installing Wine and rebooting my PC but nothing seems to work.
I am using Dell Notebook model Inspiron 1420. I run Ubuntu 9.04. I've tried but failed to install SPSS Student Version 16 via Wine. There is a message saying the installer is unable to run in graphical mode. Try to running installer with the -console or -silent flag. What is the silent flag?
im trying to install wine1.3 and i need to upgrade libc6-i386 so i let apt-get try to do it, but it hangs at unpacking the deb, normally it has no problem no error occurs just sits there like its a huge deb but its only 3mbs. ive tryed using synaptic and doing the following.
I am fairly new to using Ubuntu 10.10 or any other versions of Ubuntu. I recently downloaded Microsoft Office 2010 and opened it with Wine (read it was the best and easiest to use) after a few seconds I get an error message asking me to install msxml 6.10.1129.0, So I did some further research and found a bunch of links for download but from experience I did not attempt any as I know my PC can get infected. How to get Office on my PC.
I am trying to install wine on a Karmic box, but apt-get is trying to upgrade libc6 at the same time. _I know better than to touch the runtime C library. When I boot the same computer with a live session of Karmic, apt-get installs wine flawlessly. What is going on here? _Why is apt-get trying to do this

I went to the Wine HQ website & I did the step by step how to install wine on Ubuntu 9.10. This is the log from the terminal

just had to redo my system and am trying to install my programs, yet ubuntu all of a sudden will NOT let me run exe programs in Wine? I needddd my Pokerstars installed, and since when did Ubuntu decide to go all net nanny on us?

I installed WINE to get some old games to work on my Ubuntu box. (Return to Castle Wolfenstein)I tried downloading some demos and it says BLOCKED: WINE START UNIX and to read the executable bit. I did, and it says it will NOT install any programs downloaded from the internet. I thought 'fine, I guess they have to be retail games' so I popped the disk in and it tells me the same thing. Any exe program I EVER try to install from anywhere is just BLOCKED: WINE START UNIX. Why is this happening?
how do i unblock (diablo 2 + lod) install.... when i try to open threw wine it says its blocked and im using an actull cd so its not curupted cd cuz i just installed on my 2nd pc which has windows XP on it

i would like to run install disks via WINE, but there is a problem. the CD's are by default not executable, and the cd is read only, so when I try to change that I cant.
I would like to install uTorrent on WINE.Please don't ask why (or don't mention alternatives such as Azureus). I want to get it running on wine. When I double click the .exe file that I downloaded from the original file, nothing happens OR it gives me this message:It seems like uTorrent is already running, but not responding.
I use BabasChess 4.0 on my XP to play on freechess.org and would like to get it going on Ubuntu 9.10. I installed the latest stable version of wine 1.0.1.
I downloaded both the BabasChess 4 zip image and the file with the windows installer. Didn't have much luck with either. The zip image is the one that was mentioned by Babas as the way to go, but I couldn't see what to do with it when I extracted the files.
The windows setup.exe version installed but when attempting to launch the program it threw an error report window and crashed.
I tried hard to find some good documentation but everything seemed to assume more knowledge than I have. I managed to remove BabasChess and left wine hoping to start again.
while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :
dpkg -i wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :
This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. maybe my questions sounds funny: i'm looking for a very small (or better as small as necessary) distro which runs in a virtual box an starts wine. The reason is: we have new laptops in my school runnig windows7 64bit home and we have some software which runs only on WinXP. So why not take a virtualbox wich runs wine to start the old Software?
Firstly, I'll say that I have scanned the internet far and wide and am not looking for the responses that many new linux users with an affinity for notepad++ almost invariably received... "use this linux based INE or this one or download plugins for this other one"... No, sir. I miss notepad++. I moved to linux land, (exiled from windows for having an expired VISA) and I'll do anything to get her to move here with me.
I downloaded the npp.5.8.5.Installer.exe... I have wine installed... I have no idea what directory or where in god's name this .exe exists or if i have to query wine or what.
I'm also going to want to install itunes as well. That's not as important, but if the commands are similar I figure I might as well aim to request the killing of two birds with one.
if I install some benchmarking utilities via WINE, should I expect inaccurate results? I know about other benchmarking apps such as phoronix, but there are so many more I want to use that are of the .exe nature.
I am running Easy Peasy 9.04 on an EeePC 901. I am trying to run Wine in order to install a wireless client for my university- they blocked Linux from ALL wireless because they have no one to support Linux (I.E only a windows client, no iPod or iPhone support, as they used to have). I want Wine to get me on the network while being able to work using Easy Peasy.
1. Will Wine allow me to use the wireless network in this way? When I try to install Wine, using the WineHQ guide [URL]...I have tried to "trust the repository", install Wine with sudo apt-get update and all other instructions. I just keep getting:

I have wine installed on Ubuntu 10.04. I am trying to get Quicken 2004 installed with the installation cd. I open the cd to go to the Install.exe file. Right click on the that file and tell it to: Open with wine windows program loader. I get the following window:The file '/media/QW04BASR1/install.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit.Ok, I go to read about executable bit. Looks like I need to change the permission of it. Won't let me do it. Says:Sorry, could not change the permissions of "install.exe": Error setting permissions: Read-only file system Ok, look up and see that it is a read only. Click to change that to the only other option: Read & Write. What do I need to do here? I have never had this problem installing Quicken in wine before using previous versions of Ubuntu.
