Ubuntu Installation :: Apt-cacher-ng Failover Proxy Configuration?
May 4, 2010
i have set up apt-cacher-ng and it is working fine.I have configured the clients using the synaptic gui, (configuration-preferences-network-set proxy...)Is there a way to configure the clients so that they use the proxy when it is available (at the office) and they fall back to using no proxy when the proxy cannot be reached? We have a lot of laptops at the office which are on the road a lot, in the office i want them to use apt-cacher-ng for updates and installation, when the users are not in the office they should be able to install software without having to change the synaptic conf...

What is the current state of NFS failover (i.e. setting up two server with shared storage, with automatic failover if one fails?) I've seen a cookbook, but no details that would let me assess how well it works. There are lots of complex issues with data consistency, but the detailed information on that is years old. Our needs are fairly simple: 2 servers, a shared array, and I'm reasonably sure that we don't use locking. However we'd like failover to work reliably without loss of data.

I think I have encountered a problem in the way that lucid handles proxy servers. I was having problems running apt-get update due to a firewall at my work. I also noted that I was getting 403 Forbidden for wget. So I went to System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy from my account (which has administrator privileges) and input the http address for the proxy server, and then clicked the button to "Apply Systemwide...".
Following that change, wget worked from my account, but whenever I tried to sudo apt-get update, I got the 403 forbidden response again, even though I could wget the same files that apt-get reported as forbidden. I figured that this was a problem with the root account, and so I typed
Code:
However, upon exiting from the root account, and trying to run sudo apt-get update again, I got the 403 forbidden code again!
So, it seems that the proxy settings are not being applied systemwide.

Have been tasked with a couple of Sunfire X2100 that I am slapping Fedora 11 onto for some high profile tasks around the office. Have two drives of the same size in each server and would like to have the two disks mirrored for redundancy. Admittedly I am new at Linux administration and am feeling over my head.
1. Can this be managed during the installation process of Fedora 11?
2. If yes, let me know the step by step please.
3. If no, I take it a cron job of rsync is going to be my best option.
4. Alternatives insights etc.

i have just set up apt-cacher my file server to speed up package installs (and to reduce bandwidth use)
Im wondering if it is possible to use the apt-cacher with the mini iso, so each machine doesn't have to redownload the packages from the net?

I have used apt-cacher successfully for a long time on my home LAN. Its been great but after a recent server crash I decided to switch to apt-cacher-ng due to reports of lower memory footprint and faster response. Thats all well and good and after just a little mucking around it seems to be working.
But there are a few old (but still current) debs that I am having trouble importing into the apt-cacher-ng cache. Most of them were picked up after adding all the repos to my client and running apt-get update. But there are still a few that aren't.(the 2 biggest ones are from the same repo). My client machine runs apt-get update without fault but when I import (using the apt-cacher-ng web interface) it lists all the repos (including the one these debs should be in) but isn't importing any more of the debs. There are no errors showing.

I have two Ubuntu PCs at home and I found out about apt-cacher as a means of reducing internet usage for updates. (my connection speeds aren't that good). When I install apt-cacher, is it possible for anyone on the internet to use my PC as a repository? If so, how can I allow only computers on my LAN to access the apt-cacher cache?

Is it possible to configure a cron script to update the packages in /var/cache/apt-cacher/packages? When a client machine updates a package, apt-cacher checks that it's cached package is up-to-date, and downloads a new version if it is not.
I'd like apt-cacher to check it's cached packages every night and download any updated ones, on the premise that since it exists in the apt-cacher cache, someone has that package installed and is going to want to update it. Is this possible? Does apt-cacher do this anyway, and I haven't noticed?

I have a debian 8.1.1 server running owncloud and a proxy server at home. I have everything working fine, with one exception. The proxy server won't start on boot. If I ssh into the server, then run "sockd -D" as root, it starts up and runs just fine. Any guides I find refer to the init.d script method that worked in Wheezy, but that isn't working. I think it has to do with Jessie switching to systemd? I had used someone elses script in init.d, and ran update-rc.d, but it still doesn't start.
With Jessie, how can I make "sockd -D" execute on system startup?

I cannot seem to get e2guardian to work. I went into Ice Weasel to adjust the proxy connections but that just blocks off all internet activity. The problem seems to be with the configuration settings in the browser. I tried Privoxy with a completely new Debian install and have the same problem.

I was wondering if there was some kind of anti-spam proxy available for debian, that could serve as a layer between my ISP's mailserver and my email client. Something light, as it needs to be installed to a guruplug server with not much storage available. It would be great if I don't need to configure a fully fledged mail server but if it can function on it's own, only filtering spam messages. I already found assp and qpsmtp, but I find these very difficult to setup and assp is like huge.

I installed apache2 and mysql database on a Debian system. It is using reverse proxy on apache to redirect requests to apache2 running on any machine which is on Xen server as a Virtual host. I tried to install Drupal on it. Every thing went fine till I pointed my browser to:

then I see an installation page of Drupal which welcomes me. I click install in English then it can not proceed to connect with database. My friend has a server with 2 ips, 1 primary and 1 secondary/failover. He has given me a shell account and I want to use ssh to route my home http traffic through it like a socks proxy. I connect to his server using the secondary ip like this:
ssh me@secondary_ip -p port -D forwarding_port
It builds a proxy, however it uses the primary ip of the server, not the secondary ip that I logged in with. When using irssi I've bound it to the secondary ip with no problem. If I try to use the -b flag I get the error: cannot bind: Cannot assign requested address.
how I can bind the ssh tunnel to the secondary ip?

We have setup a High Available Cluster on two RHEL 5.4 machines with Redhat Cluster Suite (RHCS) having following configuration.
1. Both machines have Mysql server, Apache web server and Zabbix server.
2. Mysql database and web pages reside in SAN.
3. Active machine holds virtual IP and mounted shared disk.
4. We have also included a script in RHCS which takes care of starting Mysql, Apache and zabbix server on the machine which turns active when cluster switches over.
The above configuration holds good if Active machine goes down as a result of hardware failure or Reboot. What if, If any one service say Apache/Mysql/zabbix running on active hangs or become unresponsive. How can we handle this scenario ? Please advice.

I currently have 9 physical servers that I wanted to condense to 1 physical server with 7 VMs using Xen. The only issue that I have with doing this is that if the server happens to fail due to hardware problems, I am going to have a major issue. I wanted to set up a two node cluster so in the event of something happening to one of the servers, it will automatic failover to the next.
With so many ways to cluster servers, does anyone have any suggestions on the way to perform my needed task. The OS for Xen will be Red Hat and the VMs will have many versions of linux. Some of the VMs will have mysql, apache, dns, and postfix running.

I'm in need of some advise from you guys. I'm currently running a live production serverA, and last week it went down for a couple of hours which was really bad to say the least.
I've been thinking about building a mirror serverB that will rsync my data nightly. Now I don't want to load balance here, I just need to be able to switch to serverB when serverA goes down for any reason.
Would the best solution for this is to change my main nameserver entry when I want to switch ? I'm just curious if it will be a few hours or an instant change.
I thought I'd ask before attempting this live.
