Ubuntu :: Accidentally Removed Environment

Dec 27, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. I recently started messing with the desktop environment, going from GNOME to Ubuntu Studio to Netbook Remix... and then I decided to remove the Netbook look and go back to Studio, by removing it through the Software Manager. But this seemed to remove any and all desktop environments present. So now I just have the xterm. This was not part of the plan. I can get the Software Manager up and running, but I cannot get packages. I could try to provide the exact error message I get when I try, though I'm not entirely sure how to bring it to you. Is there a way I can get a desktop environment back after such a screw-up?

Ubuntu :: Accidentally Removed Some Pretty Essential Stuff Via Synaptic?

Jul 30, 2011

I recently had to install Python 2.7 to run some specific cripts and so tried to uninstall Python 2.6 so that I didn't have to worry about path conflicts. It seems that when uninstalling the Python package it's stripped most of the apps from my installation, including fairly essential stuff like the terminal. It also seemed to stop accepting my password as a root user, though I'm hoping a reboot may fix that.

Can anyone provide a listing of the default packages that Ubuntu ships with please so I can try to repair my system? I tried looking through ones I might know but it appears for example that while Bash is installed I have no Terminal entry under Applications.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Proprietary Libs On Installation Disc

Mar 2, 2010

My friend just installed Ubuntu from cd on a computer without Internet connection. She hoped to be able to open some video and music files there, but it turns out there were no proprietary libs in the installer. And since the majority of the files were avi, mp3 and mp4, they couldn't be read.I am an experienced Linux user, but I have mainly dealt with Gentoo, plus I'm used to be able to download and install programs directly through a package manager. However since my friend's computer isn't connected we don't have that possibility.

how can I install proprietary libs (like for the formats mentioned) to this computer? Could they be available from the installation disc, and if so how do I get them? Can I transfer packages with a memory stick? (And is there some easy way to find all dependencies?) Or any other solution?I do have a 3G mobile modem dongle which perhaps we could use. However I have bad impressions of those and Linux. Will it work without a great deal of configuring (or extra software)? Otherwise, this method would mean an extra step.

Ubuntu Installation :: Accidentally Installed 2 Bootloaders

Apr 2, 2011

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 as a dual boot on my Windows 7 Ultimate machine, and it's working quite nicely. However, when booting windows, I have to go through a second, extra bootloader to get there. The first is less pretty, and has lots of options (grubv1.98+ 20100804- 5ubuntu3), the second is prettier and has just 2 boot options, Windows and Ubuntu. It's not crippling, but it is annoying to have to go through two, and I'd like to get rid of one.I think I know why this has happened; I installed Ubuntu from Windows using the wubi installation program, then decided that wasn't what I really wanted to do (I'd cleaned out an entire hdd partition specifically for Linux, so having it embedded in a Windows file seemed unnecessarily complex). I deleted the install manually - NOT with the windows uninstaller, stupidly, as I didn't realise that was possible. Presumably, this did not remove the bootloader. I then installed ubuntu from CD on my empty partition.I haven't tinkered with it too much, as it works currently and I don't want to risk make things worse by not knowing what I'm doing. Firstly, has this happened for the reason I think? Is there a way to delete just the second, presumably obsolete bootloader without damaging the first? I was considering doing a quick reinstall from Windows to allow me to do a proper uninstall, but I really don't want to risk ending up with 3 bootloaders! The obvious, long approach is to start fresh by letting Windows rewrite the MBR with a rescue disk, and then install ubuntu just once - is this the best option? Would this even work?

Ubuntu Installation :: Accidentally Deleted Partition Table On Lvm Physical Volume.

Jul 18, 2010

I was trying to remove the physical volume from an old drive. So I opened gparted and told it to rewrite the partition table. The only problem is I targeted the wrong volume, I wiped the partition table on my 4tb raid5 array This 4tb array has everything! All my movies, tv shows, music. The only things I have backup up off site are my smaller files like documents. I was about to lose my whole media collection.

I did some research and found a solution that I will post here in the hopes that someone will google "I deleted the partition table on my lvm" and be find the solution. You should find in your filesystem a /etc/lvm/backup folder. LVM puts a copy of the crucial lvm information there every time you change the the volume group.

In this folder you will find a file for each volume group. In this file you will find the uuid for all of the physical volumes that make up that group. The first step is to recreate each physical volume with their original uuids. In my case I had only 1 physical volume, which was my raid5 array. My recreation command looked like this:

pvcreate --uuid cLrY02-zrVi-D0Vi-cIPB-6fF5-ed0c-XFF0os /dev/md0

Now I have a physical volume with the same uuid it had before. It is essential that you correctly match up the uuids with the correct physical deviecs. The recreated pv is empty, the volume group needs to be recovered. This is done by using a special tool and the backup file. For me the command looked like this:

vgcfgrestore --file /etc/lvm/backup/raid5 raid5

This tells it to recreate the volume group using the information in the backup file. The backup files looks for the uuid of the PV, which now matches the correct volume. The coordinates in the backup file match up to the data on the array an suddenly everything is back!

When I deleted my LVM partition table I did not damage any of the actual volumes on the volume group, I just wiped out the table of contents. The backup file had the information needed to rewrite this table of contents.

Ubuntu :: Why The Possibility Of Installation Was Removed From 10.4

May 8, 2010

I have never ever have a single installation issue with ubuntu (been using it for years and years, and before I used other distributions for years). Now I want to install Ubuntu 10.4 alongside Windows 7. I don't have any other demands or wishes, just for it to install. Unfortunately, there is no way to do that. The installer is always stopping at a "no root file system is defined". When I go to gparted in the liveCD version it shows my entire drive as free, unallocated space (although there are at least 3 partitions, one of them with working windows 7).The LiveCD sees the partitions all righ, I can access the windows partitions without any problem. Fdisk -l also shows my partitions properly. Gparted, however, for some reason doesn't recognize them.

I have only two options:

1) use whole drive (which would erase my windows 7 - no, no)

2) set up manually (which says all my 250gb drive is unallocated space). No other choices.

And generally the installer of ubuntu says "This computer has no operating systems on it."

Installing through wubi doesn't work as well. After restart it wants to install but reaches sth like 257% on "getting time from server" and says there's no root filesystem. So it's all basically about ubuntu not wanting to acknowledge the simple fact that there are already partitions and OS's on my drive...
