I accidentally removed the dhclient3 file. I had ran chkrootkit and it said it was a possible suspicious file. Once I rebooted, the network was disabled. I am running off the Ubuntu cd by choosing trial. How can I get dhclient3 back onto my installed Ubuntu?

I've read several howtos that I've to add notification area but it doesn't really work.I know that if I delete this user and create a new one the icons will be there again but I'd like to do it cleaner way.This is how it should look like (untouched user account):And this is what I've done :-/Network icon is missing in both accounts (removed by accident while trying to remove something else :-/ in user "tata" it at least shows sound button.

This user now has to manually start networkmanager each time after logging in. How can I make kde run networkmanager automatically again?How this happened: when I started a parallel session as an other user, while already connected via networkmanager in my own profile, kde detected this and asked something along the lines of "There's already a networkmanager running, run networkmanager automatically in the future?" Since I was a little confused, I clicked "no", and that's how things are ever since. I recently started messing with the desktop environment, going from GNOME to Ubuntu Studio to Netbook Remix... and then I decided to remove the Netbook look and go back to Studio, by removing it through the Software Manager. But this seemed to remove any and all desktop environments present. So now I just have the xterm. This was not part of the plan. I can get the Software Manager up and running, but I cannot get packages. I could try to provide the exact error message I get when I try, though I'm not entirely sure how to bring it to you. Is there a way I can get a desktop environment back after such a screw-up?
View 3 Replies View Relatedi was trying to remove the flash plugin 32bit wrapper (don't remember the exact name of the package),using the command apt-get -y remove --purge and i saw somehow uninstalled a bunch of other programs like the gnome-network manager,emphaty...Now i rebooted and can't log on anymore .Is there a way to repair this,like running an upgrade from the livecd to restore the missing parts without wiping out my conf & other programs ? View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently had to install Python 2.7 to run some specific cripts and so tried to uninstall Python 2.6 so that I didn't have to worry about path conflicts. It seems that when uninstalling the Python package it's stripped most of the apps from my installation, including fairly essential stuff like the terminal. It also seemed to stop accepting my password as a root user, though I'm hoping a reboot may fix that.
Can anyone provide a listing of the default packages that Ubuntu ships with please so I can try to repair my system? I tried looking through ones I might know but it appears for example that while Bash is installed I have no Terminal entry under Applications.

There is a backup file. Now my system boots to >grub command. I have tried all sorts of things from live CD to boot the system I have tried Super Grub also. I am no able to go to the directory where the back up boot menu list is available and change the name from the live CD. I am not sure what is the reason. If it is a device driver or any network service. I guess device driver is not an issue as I can detect my network card from ubuntu.

I just installed ubuntu on my d620.The wireless card seems to exist and looks fine but I don't know how to turn it on.It says the network is disabled everywhere I look but I can't find the option to turn it on.I know this is probably simple. Below is the output from various commands.I included my service tag which you can use on the dell site to find specifics about my hardware.I can't do ifconfig wlan0 up which is the only solution I've found online so far.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a weird problem that I can't find the answer for in the forums or docs. I can see the wireless network in Network Manager, but it is grayed-out and inaccessible. Other wireless networks are white and I can click on them and connect to them (or could if I knew the password).
My work computer, an IBM ThinkPad T43 running Win 7, connects.
My personal computer, a Dell Latitude C640 running Ubuntu 10.04, sees the network as grayed-out and therefore I have no option to connect to it.
I have tried the following:Checked for hardware drivers - the system says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system"
Verified that the network security settings are the same on both my work and personal computers: WPA2-Personal
Why can I see the network but it is disabled/grayed-out?
I've tried to configure :
- a wired network
- a wireless network
- a mobile broadband network as both "system connection" and "automatic connection".
I need to have a laptop that will try to connect as sson as I plug the ethernet cable in or as soon as it senses a certain SSID or as soon as there's a mobile broadband device plugged into a USB port. Non-system connections are working but I am not willing the actual user (non-admin) to read the WPA2 key or the SIM PIN. But the check box for the system connection is disabled. And running "sudo kcmshell4 --icon networkmanager kcm_networkmanagement kcm_networkmanagement_tray" doesn't result in a system connection.
I've installed ubuntu 10.04 on a hp mini 110. I've used netbook remix on this same computer and had no problems with a wireless connection. In this case, network manager shows wireless disabled. I have installed the Broadcom B43 Wireless drive from Adminstration->Hardware drivers. No help! ifconfig does not
show eth1 and lspci tells me that the Broadcom BCM4312 Network controller is present.

I was using my usb Alfa AWUS036H-v5 usb wifi card, and then after I rebooted, it randomly stopped working.. did some searching on the site, one idea was to do

which I did, and it shows my internal wifi card (iwl3945) working fine, but says my wlan7 (Alfa usb) as:
network* Disabled
Also, in the upper right hand corner, the antenna is greyed out and says "Device Not Ready"
I'm running Kubuntu and Windows on the same machine but when I swap over to Kubuntu I can't get the wireless to work. The lshw command returns network disabled but the machine can see that there is a wlan0 connection.
I've been trying to install the broadcom Linux driver from their site but the instructions fall apart at step 3: cd bnx...version/ ( directory just created by tar). I'm guessing this is because I don't have a Live CD (after almost a week of trying to burn a disc I just broke down and got Wubi) but that doesn't change the fact I have no idea what to do now or if this will even work.
If it makes any difference, the wired connection will also occasionally die mysteriously after about 30-60 minutes of use and refuse to re-activate but work fine when I switch over to Windows or just plug it into the router.
I had installed Fedora 12. I am using 4 LAN Cards. All these cards were configured using network manager, but i am not able to acivate /deactivate these cards using acivate /deactivate buttons since they got disabled. I could activate the cards by running /etc/init.d/restart network. Anyone knows why the acivate /deactivate buttons in network manager are disabled .
