Ubuntu Installation :: Restore Wubi After Windows Reinstall - Error: No Such Disk

Jul 4, 2011

I decided it was time to reinstall Windows 7 because it became increasingly slow. I know that there's a different solution to solve this problem, but as a user I'm just more satisfied with the noob friendliness of Windows. However, I know that it has its drawbacks so I had a dual boot setup with Wubi (30GB). My old configuration was as follows:

C: partition of size ~80GB with Windows 7 x64 installed
D: partition of size ~400GB with data and a wubi ubuntu at D:/ubuntu

So what I did was this:

- Backup all my personal files and D:/ubuntu on a external hdd
- Wipe the partitions using the windows installer
- Create a C: of 100GB and a D: of 380GB
- install windows 7 x64 on the C: partition

Now I would like to restore my backup of the old D:/ubuntu to a working dual boot system. I realize I may have missed some opportunities and the data may be gone, but I only found out about that when it was too late. I have tried installing wubi, and replacing the new ubuntu folder with the old one, but this did not work.

error: no such device: 9054698454696DC2
error: no such disk

I have also tried replacing only the root.disk file, with the same result. I searched for other people's solutions, but they did not seem to work in my case.

Ubuntu Installation :: Reinstall On Dell Mini Via System Restore - Boot Error

Feb 1, 2010

My Mini13 came with hardy preloaded, and it's got pretty messed up since, so I'd like to restore factory OS via a grub entry that looks like this:
title System Restore
root (hd0,2)
chainloader +1
boot

This points to a partition which, when mounted, has this stuff in it:
bootfs.img initrd0.img install.sh logo.png syslinux.cfg vmlinuz
boot.msg install.cfg ldlinux.sys rootfs.img vesamenu.c32

I'm not a computer, but that looks pretty good to me but when I select this grub option it just says:
Boot Error
Is there a log or something that might give me more info about the error?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Proprietary Libs On Installation Disc

Mar 2, 2010

My friend just installed Ubuntu from cd on a computer without Internet connection. She hoped to be able to open some video and music files there, but it turns out there were no proprietary libs in the installer. And since the majority of the files were avi, mp3 and mp4, they couldn't be read.I am an experienced Linux user, but I have mainly dealt with Gentoo, plus I'm used to be able to download and install programs directly through a package manager. However since my friend's computer isn't connected we don't have that possibility.

how can I install proprietary libs (like for the formats mentioned) to this computer? Could they be available from the installation disc, and if so how do I get them? Can I transfer packages with a memory stick? (And is there some easy way to find all dependencies?) Or any other solution?I do have a 3G mobile modem dongle which perhaps we could use. However I have bad impressions of those and Linux. Will it work without a great deal of configuring (or extra software)? Otherwise, this method would mean an extra step.

Ubuntu :: Trying To Reinstall Win 7 - Says - Cannot Boot From CD Error - 5

Mar 17, 2011

I have recently switched from Windows 7 on my laptop(about 1 year old now) over to Ubuntu 10.10 and must say it is AMAZING! So fast and smooth.

Anyways, I am wanting to reinstall Windows 7 again just to have it for some games/programs. And I am running into one small issue, that lot get.

I got a new Windows 7 Ultimate ISO CD(DVD-R) from my tech guy. When I go to launch it from a restart, after making BOOT from the DVD Drive(even made it first to boot in BIOS) it says "Cannot boot from CD error: 5"

I tried it just to see if it would work on my desktop work comp, and it did. But not on my laptop.

The only OS on my laptop is Ubuntu, I had it install along side with windows at first, but I guess I clicked something off.

I really would like to install this WIN 7 Ultimate but just cant ATM..

Software :: Login Error - Reinstall / Upgrade Of FC6

Nov 23, 2009

I have a Fedora Core 6 web server I've been testing. Everything was working fine(http, mysql, etc) until I installed Shorewall. After a reboot, now I get "(NONE): LOGIN" From what I've googled on this, this isn't an uncommon error, but I don't see any consistent way to correct this issue. Everyone just says boot single user and change roots pw. But thats where I run into problems. When I log in single user mode and try to run "passwd" to change root pw, I get "module not found". I've tried running vi(vim) to edit /etc/passwd but I also get an error about a library file missing. So, I'm at the point of thinking about reinstalling FC6. I'm assuming I should upgrade to a new version of FC. If I do this, will it "break" http and mysql? What version would be safest to upgrade to from FC6? Would it be better to just reinstall FC6 on top of whats there?

Ubuntu :: Compiling Libs Under A Different Directory

Feb 21, 2010

I am fairly new to ubuntu. I have to compile some libraries under ubuntu in a directory other than the default directory and then get the shared object libs (.so) libs for building some custome kernels. I created a directory structure as follows:

/home/username/build-target
/home/username/src-<libname> =>here are the source files for the lib. I need to compile

Now I create a directory /home/username/src-openssl and download the source code and untar it under this directory and issue ./configure --prefix=/home/username/build-target --exec-prefix=/home/username/build-target and then make and make install. I was expecting that the shared object libraries created (.so) files should have gone under /home/username/build-target/libs, however I just see only libssl.a and libcrypto.a and not .so files under the build-target/lib directory. For grep also I did the same thing as above however I don't see any lib directory created under build-target directory as I was expecting.

I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.

Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Unresponsive, Can't Reinstall?

Jun 16, 2010

I upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04, and most things appear to be fine. However, after a day or two of inactivity (apart from remotely logging in for SSH), the computer goes into a state where the screen is blank and it is unresponsive (and no longer allows access by SSH, FTP, or SVN server access). I have to reboot the computer to use it again, which I can't always do when I'm traveling. I inquired about this previously -but I'm convinced the solution may be more complicated than suggested because I don't have compiz turned on and the computer's power management is already set so that it's never supposed to sleep. I tried to install 10.04 fresh from a Live CD, but it freezes where it asks me how I want to use my partitions so I can't even reinstall
