Ubuntu Installation :: Accidentally Canceled Upgrade To Maverick Before It Finished?
Nov 1, 2010
I accidentally cancelled the upgrade (ctrl-c) to maverick before it finished on one of my servers. It was during one of the questions about installing an updated config file. If I run "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade", it complains that it can't lock the directory /var/lib/dpkg. What can I do to recover this and continue with the upgrade?
EDIT: forgot to say this system is running ubuntu-server with no GUI

I was in the middle of upgrading to 11.4 (in the update packages step) and I had to shutdown to move my computer. I cancelled the upgrade process and it completed reverting back to it's previous state and then shutdown.I just tried booting it back up to complete the update but now it won't boot. It is unable to mount my file system. I am currently running from a 10.10 live CD and I still cannot access my file system. Is there any way for me to either get back to 10.10 and keep all my files or upgrade to 11.4 and keep all my files or should I just reformat the partition and install a clean version of 11.4 from a CD? I'm still relatively new to Linux so if there's any information that I should provide to help find a solution, provide just let me know.

I am still booting from my Ubuntu Lucid Lynx, and I want to upgrade to 10.04 Maverick Meerkat without losing any of the files, and work I have done so far. I have discussed this with a friend, and he has informed me that I can do this by going to the upgrade manager in the ADMINISTRATION menu under SYSTEM. He told me all I had to do was click install, and it would install all of the packages for me, and automatically upgrade everything to 10.10 without any loss of files and information. Is this true? Also currently I am dual booting from Windows XP, and Lucid Lynx. I have a 32 bit processor, Intel Dual Core.

I just upgraded my old laptop to Maverick, and something went wrong. The update process crashed near the end. I had to kill the window. Tried to do a dist-upgrade but nothing happened, so I rebooted. After the reboot, I got a black screen, showing "Disconnected from Plymouth", and a login prompt. But the keyboard is disabled, so I can't even log in. If I try the recovery mode, I get a menu with options to get to a command line, but the keyboard is still disabled (only Ctrl-Alt-Del works).I already had a similar error in Lucid: the black screen with the Plymouth error showed up, but after a few seconds X started anyway and everything went fine. Now I'm stuck.

I installed Lucid in my laptop like this:
/sda1 - ntfs windows xp
/sda2 - /boot (ext4,350M)
/sda5 - / (31528.59M)
/sda6 swap (3,2g)
/sda4 - ntfs windows data, music etc.
After I installed 10.04, I installed following programs:
-Chromium BSU (game)
-Chromium - Brownser
-Xchat
Then I followe EXACTLY this guide:

But NO UPGRADE button appears. How Can I upgrade, without and make a fresh install? I also tried in CLI to:
z@z-laptop:/$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.

I was just wondering how long I have to upgrade to 11.04 until Maverick Meerkat is EOL. I have talked to other people, and they say to wait about a month until after the release to fix all bugs and stuff. Is this a good Idea? Or should I update now and just get it over with?

I have no option to upgrade in the update manager. I suspect that this has something to do with the fact that I haven't been able to install a number of updates for a while (I receive the Partial Upgrade error message). Is there any other safe way to upgrade that can bypass this problem?

I currently use Karmic Koala (9.10) and want to upgrade to Maverick Meerkat (10.10). The thing is that Update Manager allows me to upgrade only to 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) but I cannot upgrade to Lucid Lynx because of a bug which freezes my keyboard and mouse. Also, upgrading first to 10.04 and then to 10.10 is quite time consuming. Can I upgrade directly to 10.10 from 9.10 without 10.04 acting as a mediator?

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:E:ErrorpkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused byheld packages. This can be caused by: * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

I seem to have made a hash of moving a machine from jaunty to maverick. It used the kde3 remix, and pearson's site seems to be bouncing up and down, mostly down, for that at the moment. I've ended up with a machine that is console only. I've tried installing ubuntu-standard, which put a bunch of things on, but still no GUI.
staying with KDE3 would be nice, but I don't have time to mess with it. I find KDE4 painful, and have been put off by the ideological "purity" that caused the gnome split since its inception. I guess that leaves me with Unity. But how do I get the bloody thing up. Heck, xdm & fvwm sounds pretty good right now, too.

I've upgraded my netbook from Lucid to Maverick, and have a couple of questions:
1. My start-up apps don't appear to be running. In particular Tilda and Gnome-Do don't start up - and removal of the "Alt+F2" shortcut to run programs makes it hard to start them manually.
2. I'm still getting the old launcher as the desktop, with no search box in the top bar. (In many respects having the old launcher isn't so bad, as I'm Not Friends with the new Unity side-panel.

I would like to know if someone was able to upgrade/fresh install ubuntu 10.10 maverick on a dell studio hybrid. First I've tried to upgrade. Everything went well, until the system started. First thing to notice is that the orange was so bright that was almost impossible to look at the monitor. Not a big deal, adjusting some monitor brightness etc. Second the mouse (usb) stopped for some fraction of a second, or a second, when you click to open a program. It is annoying but it is also a problem that I could wait to find some solution.
Third and worse, it was completely impossible to see videos in vlc or other players, I've tried vlc, xine, etc, the videos was stuttered, choppy. SMPlayer was able to play them better. I've tried the solution here [URL] and it does not work at least for me. Fourth the fans went completely crazy, running as mainly when I have to use smplayer, I've found some complains about that [URL] but the solution does not apply to my computer.
Then I've tried a fresh install hoping that some of the troubles would not appear. The only trouble solved was the look and feel. Mouse the same trouble, stuttered, choppy videos on vlc, fans running all the time. And now it was impossible to install the wireless proprietary driver Broadcom sta. The only solution was to come back to Lucid. A fresh install of Lucid and mouse working ok, no troubles seeing videos in vlc, fans working absolutely normal and no troubles to install the wireless driver.

I'm having is trying to install ubuntu 10.04, when i get to the end and it asks you to click OK to reboot it never does, it sits there and never reboots (left for an hour!), forcing a shutdown and starting up then results in no GRUB coming up to dual boot (windows 7, installed on a seperate HDD)
This previously worked fine but I got rid of ubuntu to try a different flavour (which didn't install successfully, couldn't find the disk drive I wanted to install it on but I had already wiped ubuntu off for a fresh install)
I have formatted the partition i made (30gb partition) and manually created space for root and a partition from that for a swap file but this made no difference. I have used a partition manager and completely got rid of the partition (resizing the drive back up to full amount) and let the ubuntu installer do the partition itself but again the same problem.
I'm not sure what it is doing at this stage when going to reboot, i'm guessing installing GRUB and terminating the processes for the reboot, which never completes. I have also tried installing GRUB on the partition which said "Windows 7 loader" but that made no difference. I will try fixboot and fixmbr commands in windows recovery console in case it can't overwrite the boot sector for any particular reason tonight.

I'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?

Today I upgraded my Lucid to Maverick. After upgrading, from "update-manager -d", I tried a couple of new programs (games, actually) and re-enabled the third party repositories. I don't have exotic things, just google chrome, transmission beta, and some more of this sort. After rebooting, the system enters in terminal instead of the regular gui. I tried to search online for possible solutions, but none worked. I tried
(1) startx
output: fatal server error, no screen found.
(2) sudo service gdm stop; sudo service gdm start
Output: gdm start/running process 1265
(3) removing the option nomodeset from the boot. To do this I edited /etc/default/grub, the line with the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX and ran grub-mkconfig. After a reboot, the computer returned to the terminal.
(4) some even suggested removing /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but I don't have that file...
I have an acer timeline with initial hardware. I don't know which graphics card it has, if any... I really need to get my computer running, and I was looking for suggestions before reinstalling 10.04.

How are your experiences upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10? I'm thinking about it but I'm hesitating since there is no way I could make any backups and I've had some bad experiences with Debian dist-upgrades. Have you upgraded already? If so, have you had any trouble?
