Ubuntu Installation :: Xubuntu Won't Work With P2 And SCSI HDD?

Apr 22, 2011

I'm trying to install the Xubuntu 10.04 i386 Alternative build on a Pentium 2 Compaq PC with a SCSI hard drive. I run the installer but when loading it chokes up trying to read/write the SCSI harddrive and fails to install.

Do I need SCSI drivers or are they included and my disk corrupted? Windoze 98 and NT4 work fine on this PC.

Ubuntu Installation :: Creating An Extremely Minimal Version Of Xubuntu Using XFCE - Go With Mini.iso Or The Xubuntu Alternate Install CD ?

Jan 12, 2010

I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:

HTML Code:

http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:

xorg
slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager)
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xubuntu-default-settings
bcmwl-kernel-source
aptitude

My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

Red Hat :: Mapping /proc/scsi/scsi Entries With Respective Device Names In /dev/ Directory

Apr 11, 2011

In my understanding, the way /proc/scsi/scsi gets populated, /proc/paritions also gets populated in the same fashion. i.e. the description for first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi can be seen in the first entry of /proc/partitions and same for rest.

So, With this assumption, in my project, I used to relate first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi with first entry of /proc/partitions to get its total size and same for all entries.

But, I observed some differences in following scenario, where

1) The first 4 entries in /proc/scsi/scsi are SAN luns attached to my system and for which the actual device names in /dev/ are sda, sdb, sdc and sdd.

2) The last 4 entries are the internal HDDs on same system. In /dev/, their respective device names are sde, sdf, sdg & sdh.

(Output attached at end of the thread)

But in /proc/partitions, the device order is different.

You can see their respective sizes in /proc/partition output as well.

So, my question is, in this particular scenario, I can't relate the first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi with first entry of /proc/partition. i.e. scsi0:00:00:00 is not /dev/sde, because it is actually /dev/sda.

It seems that my assumption is wrong in this scenario.

Is there any way or mechanism to figure out actual device name for an entry in /proc/scsi/scsi in /dev/ directory?

How can my application should relate /proc/scsi/scsi entries with their respective device names and sizes?

Jun 23, 2011

Some of our workstations have LTO's attached and they seem to drop off every now and again, the only thing which picks them up again (besides a reboot) is the famous rescan-scsi-bus script from here

The thing is that I'd like non-root users to be able to run this script, which in turn needs root to /proc/scsi/scsi

Ubuntu :: Webkinz Doesn't Work On 64bit Xubuntu System

Aug 15, 2011

Just noticed that my kids are no longer able to play webkinz on my 64bit system (Edubuntu). Webkinz also doesn't work on my 64bit Xubuntu system. Looks like 64bit Flash is broken? -- or something is broken between Webkinz and the latest flash. Webkinz, predictably enough, works on Windows, but also works on my 32bit Linux system with the latest flash.Just wondering if any of you out there with a 64bit system could try accessing Webkinz (if you can see the Login moniker and click it, then it's working on your system).

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install On SCSI RAID?

Feb 16, 2010

First off I'd like to say I'm very new to Ubuntu, so I'm still trying to learn.I have a K8 motherboard with an adaptec U320 SCSI card with RAID ability. To that card I connected two 15k RPM 35 GB Maxtor SCSI drives. For some reason I'm not able to install Ubuntu 9.10 onto these drives with both drives in RAID 0.With both drives separately configured Ubuntu doesn't even see them.I have by the way run Windows XP and 2000 succesfully on these drives in Raid 0 configuration.I set up the array in the card's bios as bootable with write cache enabled. The system's bios sees the array as the array to boot from.Ubuntu (both standard and alternate) sees the array and I have tried to install Ubuntu on it by manually partitioning it or having me guide it with or without LVM.I tend to delete and rebuild the array between attempts so I have a clean slate to start from every time I try.

I have no other drives (except the CD of course) installed on this computer. The whole installation goes very well untill the end where I get a message that it could not install the boot loader (grub?).Every single time I've tried to install Ubuntu in all sorts of ways onto my RAID 0 array I have run into problems installing that boot loader, and I've tried that card and those disks in another computer as well.Tomorrow I'd like to try to manually set up the partitions with a small /boot partition on a standard hard drive with / on the array, but if somebody please has any idea's on how I might get it working without having to rely on another hard disk (which might not even work of course)

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 / 10.04 / 9.10 - Does Not Detect Dual SCSI Controller

Oct 22, 2010

I have a Dell PE 600 box with 2 Adaptec 2110s U160 Single Channel RAID controller supported 6 HDDs.I am trying to install Ubuntu from a mini ISO - tried server / desktop / alternate as well. And also different Ubuntu versions. The mini installer runs upto setting the time zone (after configuring for DHCP et.al.) and then on the screen 'Detecting Disks and Other Hardware' hangs up.Now I am assuming its because of the fact that I have 2 of the above controllers - as I have another similar box with only 1 of the controllers and it installs/boots fine with no problems.Look forward to you suggestions/help and if there is any other info I can provide. I plan to set up Ubuntu 10.10 server on it. Btw I don't think its a Linux problem as SUSE 11.3 installs fine on the box.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing Dual Boot WithXP On SCSI Disks?

Aug 31, 2010

Using 9.10 in dual-boot with XP:

Dell 600SC running an Adaptec 39160 dual channel SCSI controller which has 2 disks connected to it. The machine also has 2 IDE drives connected to it. The boot order of the disks is set to the SCSI disks as the first in boot order (after CD).

I am trying to set it to maximize performance from the SCSI config so I have XP on the first SCSI and I set up Ub 9.1 on the second SCSI in a dual-boot configuration.

In this set up the machine when rebooting goes straight to XP (on the first SCSI) and does not even see the Ub installation. The installation went fine and no complaints. On the same machine if I just had Ub on the first SCSI - machine boots fine (albeit after a long pause looking for the bootloader).

So with XP on the first disk (which I need to - to have XP) the Ub bootloader does not seem to set the right params to be able to boot.

Again this is with 9.1. Not trying 10.04 as with 10.04 I don't even get to boot even with standalone Ub (with no XP). However it installs fine but does not find bootloader in 10.4, so we will keep to the 9.1 for now. I am however open to working with 10.04 if there is a solution in dual-boot with XP in my config.

So again 9.1 installs fine with XP on 1st SCSI disk, an ub 9.1 on 2nd SCSI disk, but then bootloader does not get activated and machine goes straight to XP.

Fedora Installation :: Does Preupgrade F10 To F11Beta Fail On SCSI Disks?

Apr 23, 2009

I did a fresh install of Fedora 10 x86, then updated fully with yum, then did a preupgrade to F11 Beta. The download of the rpms works fine but the preupgrade reboot fails with:
Error downloading kickstart file
Unable to download the kickstart file.....
proceed as an interactive installation
hd:UUID=8f4a.....(uuidhere) ...05a8:/upgrade/ks.cfg

I have a SCSI disk so I'm suspicious preupgrade is having trouble accessing it? That prefix "hd" looks suspicious, should that be:
Code:
sda:UUID=8f4a.....(uuidhere) ...05a8:/upgrade/ks.cfg
or maybe
Code:
sd:UUID=8f4a.....(uuidhere) ...05a8:/upgrade/ks.cfg
