Ubuntu Installation :: Wubi Upgrade From 9.10 To 10.04 / Status Bar Saying "Preparing Memtest86+"?

May 11, 2010

I have a Wubi installation of Ubuntu 9.10 and am trying to upgrade to 10.04. The download of everything went fine, but it has stuck on the "installing the upgrades" part, about halfway through it keeps saying "Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic". It keep repeating this constantly. The status bar says "Preparing memtest86+" with about 14 minutes remaining.

Ubuntu :: E: Memtest86+: Subprocess Installed Post-removal Script Returned Error Exit Status 127

Nov 18, 2010

I have had no problems with downloading/installing updates and programs, and everything worked fine. Until memtest came along. It ran by itself (I think my dad made it the first boot option in grub), and now if I try to install any packages or programs, it will either say "Grub installation failed" or that any packages I tried to install failed. If I removed memtest, would that make it possible for me to install stuff again? Or is there a way to work around it?the main error report I get is: "E: memtest86+: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 127"

I can right click on the desktop and it gives me options to create launchers, etc.

Ubuntu Installation :: FGLRX Status On 10.04 Upgrade Warning?

Oct 17, 2010

I am running 8.04 on a Toshiba Satellite A100 laptop. (My Toshiba model is unfortunately the one with the Phoenux BIOS)I have been happy with 8.04 LTS for quite some time now and was thinking of upgrading to 10.04 LTS, which the Update Manager says is available. I normally choose to upgrade a few months after release once things have stabilised a bit. I figured it was now time for 10.04.I accordingly have first taken all the updates for 8.04 and brought it up-to-date. Then when I click on Upgrade, I get the following messageUpgrading may reduce desktop effects and performance in games and other graphically intensive programs. This computer is currently using the AMD 'fglrx' graphics driver. No version of this driver is available that works with your hardwarein Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Do you want to continue ?Since I wasn't sure of the exact entire implications, I said NO and exit the upgrade at that point.I then googled a bit and found this to be a pretty serious installation issue with a number of people who unfortunately have ATI display cards. But then I came across this page:Does the above link mean that this problem is now solved with respect to 10.04 as well ?Also, if not, what are the implications for me ? Does this mean I have to be stuck on 8.04 only ?If I choose to upgrade anyway, what display functionality will I lose ?I don't need Desktop Effects or other toys. But I do use GIMP quite a bit and also watch videos in multiple formats. Will I not be able to do these ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Wubi To Real Partition?

May 25, 2011

I've been using Ubuntu NR 10.04 LTS for almost 1 years now with dual-boot with Windows XP by Wubi and I had great time using it. Now I want to experience the full potential of Ubuntu by creating another partition just for Ubuntu alone since I heard Wubi makes a lot of trouble and works slower than independent Ubuntu install.

Here's my question. Should I really create another partition to get full potential of Ubuntu or should I stick with wubi? I haven't got any problem running Ubuntu with Wubi but my video playback sometimes gone haywire which didn't happen in windows especially .mkv files

If I should create a partition, how do I want to shrink Drive C: to get enough free space for another partition? Mine was Windows XP so it doesn't have shrink option in Disk Managament unlike Vista/7.

And last question... Can Ubuntu run Window games or MMORPG smoothly like Counter Strike and WarcraftIII? I did try to play it before but it run too slower in Ubuntu. I used Netbook Eee PC 900HA, 2GB RAM, dual-boot Windows XP Home Edition with Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 Lucid Lnyx LTS.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Broke After Wubi Upgrade / Sort It?

Aug 18, 2010

I beleive I had version 9.x installed. I upgraded once and everything was fine. I went the upgrade manager again and it found some more upgrades. The upgrade messed with grub. It then told me there were no new upgrades. Then I rebooted and it says

Try (hd0,0): NTFS5

Then the screen clears and there is some text I can't read and then it says command not found. Then it reboots.

Is there a way to fix this?
If not is there a way to recover the files from the disk image file.

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic (wubi Install) Won't Boot After Dist-upgrade?

Jan 11, 2010

i have Karmic installed with Wubi inside a Vista NTFS filesystem. Yesterday i did an apt-get dist-upgrade and Karmic never booted again. It won't even show the grub kernel list, it just shows some really quick text that vanishes before i can even figure out what it is and then drops to some sort of grub shell and then i can't figure out what to do.

I could boot a livecd and mount my karmic install and everything seems fine, the filesystem is clean and all that. But how do i fix it so it can boot again?

Does anyone here know wtf happened? Was there a bad upgrade or something?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Wubi Upgrade Failed / Freezes At Battery Check?

May 6, 2010

I have a Wubi installation, and the upgrade to 10.04 froze. I didn't note down the point at which it froze.

When I tried to reboot, I got the grub screen, and when selecting Ubuntu I get lots of text messages scrolling by, but it freezes at battery check.

The machine boots fine into Vista.

Rather than spend a lot of time trying to figure out what went wrong in the upgrade, my inclination is to delete the Wubi installation from within Windows, and then do a fresh install of 10.04 under Wubi. Is this feasible/sensible?

There are a handful of files I would like to salvage from the prior installation, however. Could I do that with a Live CD since the prior installation was under Wubi?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Lucid From Wubi Install To Real Partition?

Jun 4, 2010

I have been using Lucid Lynx for almost 2 weeks and have got everything working, thanks to the "ubuntu" spirit in this forum. Now I am ready to upgrade my Wubi install to its separate partition. I have searched the forum and googled to find a way to do this, but I am still stuck.

I used lvpm (despite knowing that there is no confirmation of its working on Lucid Lynx), it didn't work. The installation happened alright but it wasn't able to show up the login screen (GDM?). It was stuck around the screen before that (Xsplash?).

There is this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591 that explains this process very well but remains silent on Lucid Lynx version.

I am sure there must be many other first timers who wanted to get their feet wet the easy way using wubi and would like to make it "permament" OS on their computers.

Is there anyone who can suggest if :

1. There is any way I can still use lvpm to transfer wubi install to separate installation (Ubuntu 10.04 release) ?

2. Any other way I can do this ??

I was in the process of upgrading my ubuntu system (probably the latest version, it was about a month ago) and my computer froze (it does that on occasion). The problem is that when I do that, I get the message "dpkg: unable to access dpkg status area: read-only file system". So, what do I do now? I definitely dont want to mess up my system, but I want to fix it.

Debian Installation :: Current Status Of Lenny / Squeeze Upgrade Process?

Apr 17, 2010

I'm starting to bump into crusty software in Lenny and am looking to upgrade to Squeeze. However, there's no release notes yet and Googling for upgrade directions yields all kinds of variations, some of which talk about "interesting" issue. Thus, my questions:

1. How hard/messy is the Lenny to Squeeze upgrade at this time?
2. Where can I find straightforward, clear directions on how to upgrade?

For quite some time, I just stayed on testing and incrementally upgraded on a regular basis, but stopped after Lenny came out because security support was suspended. Now I'd like to climb back on that train.FWIW, I originally installed Slink in 1999 and haven't reinstalled from scratch since, despite several generations of hardware upgrades.

Ubuntu Installation :: Preparing To Dual Boot Windows 7 + 10.10?

Nov 30, 2010

In a few days I'll be getting Windows 7 and a new hard drive, hoping to dual boot W7 and 10.10. I'm really just looking for confirmation before I go ahead and install anything and mess things up. I have three hard drives. Windows will go on a 1TB HD, Ubuntu will take up part of a separate 500gb drive, and the other 500GB is NTFS storage. Installing both OS from scratch, so I'll format those disks with gparted before installing Windows and then Ubuntu. How should I format the Windows disk? A single primary NTFS partition?

And for Ubuntu, does this look right?:

15gb primary ext4 for root
XXGB ext4 for /home
4gb swap (to match RAM)

Am I missing anything?
